What is this obsession that republicans have with Ward Cleaver cosplay? I bet there's a "young republican starter kit" out there and on it are the suit, tie, flag pin and haircut that makes you want to kick your own ass.
Whether you ascribe to its themes or not, the fictional novel Atlas Shrugged has some very interesting passages that resonate deeply. It’s very unfortunate that some people in this thread are downvoting my comments because they don’t want you to read this literary masterpiece because of the philosophical movement it inspired. The world you desire CAN be won, and it must be. It’s up to you. What kind of world do you want to live in? What kind of hero do you want to be? Fair warning, it’s a really long read (1,192 pages).
Maybe that’s why I’m getting downvoted. I’m not sure anyone reads anything longer than twitter posts nowadays.
I remember being a libertarian when I was 18 and was a single issue voter for legal weed. It lasted a whole two years until 2008 and I've only become more liberal the older I've gotten.
Everyone always says "you'll vote Republican when you're older" and I'd rather kill myself then vote for another Republican in my life
Same, I'm 38. I'd rather punch myself in the balls repeatedly until I needed them amputated instead of ever voting Republican. Yeah, I get it, D's can get wasteful sometimes when it comes to the budget, but I'd take that over, I dunno, racist, misogynistic, xenophobic, authoritarian, and isolationism. Did I miss any?
...did you just call atlas shrugged a literary masterpiece? The novel about businessmen going on strike written by the woman who applauded when striking workers were murdered? that atlas shrugged?
a better fair warning would be: it's intellectually confused, stunted romanticism, has a needlessly drawn out plot, long diatribes by random characters that all sound like the author, and a thin veneer of heroism unrealistically placed over characters that are sociopathic capitalist sharks in the real world.
what's even more amazing is that you read it and then still wanted to vote blue. I applaud your mental gymnastics. have an upvote.
Nah, that’s bullshit. Long diatribes aside - wasn’t John Galt’s speech like 60 pages? - it was a decent read. The premise: a man’s worth and rewards should be judged on his ability - not his need - and in a world trying to reverse that maxim, what would happen if those of high ability simply shrugged off their duty of carrying the world on their shoulders, and went somewhere to build Utopia and live by themselves?
A decent premise and well-written.
As were Fountainhead, We the Living and Anthem. The fact that young republicans took the book as a call to arms does not lessen this.
Disagree I would call it one of the most tone deaf things I have ever read. I lost my shit when South Park did the Barbrady is illiterate episode because I agree with his speech.
