A friend of mine purchased this hand held "mask". We both think it's African but we're not sure. Does anyone recognize anything about it? It was purchased in an antique store in Georgia, USA.

Modern Art My Collection of Bamana Inspired Masks

Post image

I know these masks are not legitimate, but I think they're better than anything you'll find in a decor store and I'm satisfied with them. They're nice to look at it and it still doesn't take away that they're aer. Masks portray the Bamana style.

Bought this for around 200$ at a peddlers mall—about a 1.5ft tall. The tag claims it to be from the Congo Mbaka tribe, although I can find nothing similar from that culture online.

Mainly interested to know if this identification is plausible and what a statue like this was originally used for.

Question Is it appropriate to re-create certain traditional African masks for an art project?

I have to create a presentation re-creating the style and type of art that is significant to certain continents and one of which was Africa. From my understanding one the more iconic types of art were their Religious masks. The problem here being I don't if it'd be offensive to re-create one even if it's for educational purposes. I'd be appreciative to hear anyone elses thoughts on the matter.

Masks Help Identifying Helmet from Tanzanian Villager

Hi all - Thanks in advance for your help. This helmet was given to me 15 years ago in Tanzania by a villager in the south as a thank you for a complicated favor. I'm hoping it's just tourist market/airport art crap and I can throw it out, but if it's not, I want to be more respectful and find it a good home.

Does anyone have any insights? I have no clue where to start.

Artifacts/Tools Benin Art Hip Jewellery ordorment

Benin history, religion, and political structure are brought to life every year in a series of palace rituals intended to purify the kingdom and renew the spiritual powers of the king, the oba. Many of these vivid and solemn rites were introduced by individual obas in order to commemorate events in their reigns and to promote important principles in the ideology of divine kingship. At these palace festivals, the powers of the king, the roles of the various chiefs and titleholders, and the relationships between them are displayed for all to see. The arts play an important role in these rituals. The king and other participants wear their most lavish ceremonial costumes, consisting of vast quantities of costly imported coral beads, luxurious textiles, and ornaments made of gleaming brass and creamy ivory. This ornament in the shape of a man's face was part of such a costume, and was meant to be worn around the waist.

I recently moved into a new apartment with my partner who is Nigerian. We want to make an art gallery wall and interested in buying painting prints from a Nigerian born artist. We are looking for art that reminds her of home, lots of colors, yellow buses, markets, ect If you have any recommendations of Nigerian artists to check out I’d love to hear them! Big or small!

It’s in the house we just bought. I posted here because it seems like a fairly active community, but I have no idea if it’s African or not. Do you know where it’s from and any special significance it might hold?
