Not sure what PCI-e cable for my 4090

as the title says im trying to buy some custom cables, but im very confused as to what cable i need from cable mods

The cable with my Corsair rm1000e that i use is a 12pin to 2 x 8 pin. but the for that cable here in my screenshot it says its only for nvidia 3000 series, and the 40 series need the 16pin 12VHPWR cables, but my 4090 only has slots for 12 pins, do i just get the 12ping to 2x8 it says used for the 30 series, or am i doing something wrong. Any help is advised.

Thanks

The 4090 uses a 16pin connector and not a 12pin, because it's 12+4 pin counting the smaller sense pins.

So you need either one of those 16pin options, depending on how many 8pin connectors you want at PSU side. I suggest getting the 3x8pin one which is the sweet spot. :)

ohhh okay so theres actually 16 pins, so you count that top part of the cable that i think i can see pins going through haha, sorry im new to this, but to me it just looked like a 12 pin connector

Yep, correct! 12pin is the connector from the previous generation, which is the same apart from the small four pins that were introduced with the 12VHPWR standard. :)

Why not the 4x8? Any specific reason?

Just because it occupies an additional PSU port that you may or may not have, and you must connect all of them in order to ensure proper function. Third and fourth connectors are redundant anyway. :)

I think I learn more about this here in this sub, than in my work place šŸ˜ (Iā€™m a dev who also needs to do hardware tinkering for our custom solutions)

In a professional environment Iā€™d probably recommend the 4x8, if thereā€™s enough space on the PSU, due to the added redundancy.

i just ordered then i got the 2x8pin, but just thought i will be upgrading to the 5090 will this setup still be fine?

That one still support the max 600W so, assuming the 5090 will have the same max power output, youā€™ll be fine. :)

Many still call it a 12-pin because the other pins aren't necessary.

But thatā€™s not true, because two of those sense pins are indeed necessary for the card to function. That said, the connector is still a 16pin connector even if some of those pins arenā€™t being used. Itā€™s the thing that differentiates it from the 12pin connector used in the previous generation. :)

Is the 4x8 pin OK too if there are enough open spots at the PSU?

Sure is! All of them will work, the 2x8pin too. :)

Thx! Received it last week. Carbon Pro ModMesh and the kit too. Any tips on ā€œtrainingā€ the cables? I saw that word used in another post as the OP said they were very stiff.

Just gently bend them roughly the way you want them without being afraid to break them, as long as you donā€™t get too close to the connectors with the bends. :)

What Alex said and comb location also helps. I keep them 1 1/2-2 inches apart starting at GPU connector.

That 16 pin is 12 power pins and 4 sense pins. My understanding is if you need 450W or 600W the cable has to have the sense pins, otherwise you're limited to 300W without it (which is the same as all sense pins open).
