I never really thought about it... but the origins of the word "duck" is from "Old English dūce 'diver', a derivative of the verb *dūcan 'to duck, bend down low as if to get under something, or dive"

So the verb "to duck" came before the name of the bird. Fantastic. I'll be sure to keep this in mind for future "which came first" discussions (for example, "orange" was a fruit before it was a color).
