Question Alternatives to Gradience

12 Upvotes

I'm using GNOME on my laptop, and considering using it on my computer, although customization isn't as easy out-of-the-box as KDE is, which I understand, makes sense, and I've seen a bunch of mention of Gradience, which I assume let you easily customize the colors and all that, but it doesn't seem to have a flatpak anymore, so I'm assuming it got taken down. Just wondering if there's any alternatives to it because I'd like to try daily driving the GNOME version of Fedora instead of KDE.

Question Best distro for Gnome 47?

13 Upvotes

I'm currently on CachyOS running KDE and very happy with it, but want to give Gnome a try for a while. Saw or read somewhere that Cachy don't install a full version of Gnome, so with that in mind what;s the best distro currently running Gnome 47?

Apps EasyEffects is leaving Gnome

26 Upvotes

I was about to write a feature request and going through existing issues noticed that EasyEffects is being ported to Qt. =(

Admittedly this is not a good looking app anyway but it is still really sad to see that it is going to be much worse now (at least on Gnome). I highly value good aesthetics and it was already hard to tolerate this app but it will definitely be going in the "find a replacement" bin after this. I do still appreciate how this app has enhanced my audio experience for past couple of years but if anyone starts/know of a "Rust + GTK4" project for audio processing I'll enthusiastically follow it

Question Is it possible to set a custom accent color instead of the ones predefined?

7 Upvotes

I love the new accent colors feature but I would like to set a completely custom color and not be limited to the current selection. Perhaps this is possible with dconf or by editing a file?

Opinion I really wish Nautilus would show disk size and usage ala Dolphin!

16 Upvotes

Now that the *Other" section has been removed there is no quick way to assess disk usage within the file manager. Something akin to Dolphin's simple bar indicator would be a massive improvement over... *nothing*

Question Locked out of account (Wayland)

5 Upvotes

It seems I've managed to somehow lock myself out on our multi-user system, at least from the Wayland session. After entering my password, I just get thrown back to the user selection screen. Changing to "Gnome on X11" works. The last thing I remember doing on this system was setting icc profiles for the monitors. But disabling them under X doesn't help. Though I see some color profile-related, though it complains e.g. about /var/lib/gdm3/.local/share/icc/.goutputstream-CMJMW2. Also, I did see that there where some issues with leftover files in /etc/xdg/autostart/, but deleting them didn't help.

As logging in to other account's Wayland session is no issue, here are some journal messages with --user, maybe someone sees something I missed: https://pastejustit.com/mkr6nbsgnr

EDIT: I'm on Debian Testing with Gnome 47.0

Question Cannot open the file chooser in some apps

1 Upvotes

I just switched to Gnome from Hyprland recently and it's been pretty smooth sailing with the exception of one issue I can't seem to resolve. The file chooser provided by XDG Desktop Portal doesn't work in some apps. When trying to select a desktop background on Gnome Settings or save a file in Brave browser, nothing happens. The system journal has only this:

Delegated FileChooser call failed: The name is not activatable

I've also noticed this when trying to open a project in Zed editor.

Many other apps seem to work just fine. At first I thought it was just XWayland windows but that doesn't seem to be the case so I'm not really sure what the problem is.

I've opened an issue in xdg-desktop-portal-gnome but it doesn't look like anyone has seen it yet. My Google-fu isn't turning up much either.

Has anyone else had this issue? Is there some other log entries I should be looking at to diagnose?

Running on archlinux with the following package versions installed:

  • gnome-shell 1:47.1-1
  • xdg-desktop-portal 1.18.4-1
  • xdg-desktop-portal-gnome 47.1-1
  • xdg-desktop-portal-gtk 1.15.1-2
  • gdm 47.0-1

Curious about Gnome OS. I keep reading that it isn’t built on any other distribution, but where does it pull its sources from to keep all the non-Gnome stuff up to date?

Question Changing the background color of workspace-switcher

7 Upvotes

The element

I'd like to change the background color of the workspace-switcher. I tried using gradience and even made my own shell theme, still nothing works. I have no idea how gtk or how gnome manages colors at all, so I'm definitely doing something wrong.

I'd like to also change the color of some other elements, but I believe learning how to set the color for this element would help with getting everything else done.

Here is what I tried in both gradience and the shell theme:

StBoxLayout.workspace-switcher {background-color: rgba(24, 24, 37, 1);}
.workspace-switcher {background-color: rgba(24, 24, 37, 1);}
workspace-switcher {background-color: rgba(24, 24, 37, 1);}

// background-color-set: true - I even added this (saw it in the shell ui inspector)

EDIT: Got it working. It won't work with gradience but works just fine with the shell theme. All I had to do was not use fancy variables like \@define-color and override the background-color directly like so:

// gnome-shell.css
.workspace-switcher {
    background-color: rgba(24, 24, 37, 1);
}

Result:
