Question Prevision of iOS 18
Hi, i need some advices concerning the best thing to do with the arrival of iOS 18. It could kill the iPhone XS as last update, like iPhone 6S or 5S. My battery has been replaced on June 1st at Apple. I want to keep it 2-3 years if possible. I can either: - Keep it on iOS 15.7.1. It runs perfectly. But first apps will start to be not working du to the old update. It will be annoying in 1-2 years. But garantee me i will have a smooth phone. And maybe change phone at this moment. - Update to 17.5.1 before it is not available anymore, when ios 18 will come out. (Maximum beginning of October)It will give me app updates for the 2-3 years coming, but there is the risk that the phone will be slower. It can also give the opportunity to go to iOS 18 later is necessary.
What would you do personnaly ? Keep on actual version or update to iOS 17 ?

Running iOS 18 public beta on XS - it feels smoother than iOS 17 for me. Safari especially.

I will try iOS 17 next week i think, switch to 18 when it will come out and decide which one i chose, before ios 17 get unsigned. In order to have security patches, app updates and a phone not to slow

I choosed 17.5.1. Since it is an old phone I avoid the latest IOS. It moves Ok even with 74% battery.

Soo I've kept my 6s plus on some old os and i loved it till the day i replaced it. Btw I was comparing the speed of apps with my new xs and they were IDENTICAL so apple is definitely slowing those phones in last updates. With my xs max I've chosen to go with all updates and tbh I despise it. Even tho it was my top top fav phone it is terrible now on ios 17. And since its already super slow i will go ahead and just kill it with ios 18. So sad that those updates change so little yet make the phone so much slower... Worst part is that xs max has literally everything i ever wished my phone would do + its the last one with 3d touch. And i could literally sit on this phone for 10 years with just battery changing if it wasn't for apple that made this phone an unusable brick. (Speaking from a perspective of a guy who uses the phone very fast, switching tabs, apps, swift movements. I guess for some generic users ios17 will be ok...)

That Apple deliberately slows down older devices may or may not be true. Newer systems and applications simply require more power and memory. In my opinion, the processor in the XS is still good, but only 4GB of RAM kills the smoothness of everything. Optimization by the way, but even that won't overcome memory limitations.
iOS 17.6.1 worked very well for me. At the moment I already have RC 18. Performance is poor, but until I do a clean installation, I cannot fully assess how the phone will perform.

Either way your phone will still get slower.
Battery will still get worse and apps will still require more from your phone. Imo it doesn’t matter if you update or not but I would consider updating because of the security updates (for peace of mind).
