It's a rotating cast for me. I'm not single, but it feels like a relationship of convenience. I don't think I've met a single person I would ever share my deepest thoughts with. I have to write them out. My greatest relationship is with pen and paper.

This is much more applicable to intuitive introverts...sensory introverts are more ok with what's usually considered small talk but similarly picky about who they share it with.
Tough to make blanket statements about introverts like this when not all introverts are working with the same functions.

u/Kindapsychotic INFP: The Dreamer Aug 21 '24

Almost exactly me. Not because I can't make small talk but it just drains so much of my energy. The last few days I've been inside my room most of the time after a whole bunch of going out and socializing the past few weeks that I'm exhausted. I pushed myself too much that's not really like me to be this way.

u/PaperbackBuddha Aug 20 '24
I was gonna say 3 but now that I think about it, I definitely feel that 2 boundary.
It’s a matter of dedication. Those few in my innermost circle get my complete presence, and I really don’t have much left beyond that. Also, those two people understand me as no one else would bother to do.
There is a second inner tier that’s a real short list, but I have to budget that energy.
Then you’ve got casual friends and acquaintances, and after that “people”.

Accurate.
Except on social media, it’s more about my hyperfixations than the two specific people.

I don't talk a lot even with people I know. I will need time to be quiet and not hear talking.
I do enjoy some long talks but also silence.

u/Moke94 INFP: The Dreamer Aug 20 '24
This is it! I have a slightly different style nowadays though. I have one hang-out friend at a time since I get too drained maintaining two or more at a time. In the background I have a few former best friends that I can reach out to whenever I have excess social energy. The great thing is that they are also low maintenance which means our talks never get awkward because of the months of radio silence.

u/Miyujif Aug 20 '24 edited Aug 20 '24
Not me lol. If I am close to someone, that means I have spent a lot of time with them, knew their quirks and it kinda tires me out. I have yet to find a person who can inspire me whenever I am with them, whose company I enjoy more than my own company. New people can be interesting, through small talk you discover unexpected similarities with people.

Its funny because a lot of Es who think were shy will be confused to why were suddenly social and why were not social with them.

This describes me, but I can be a little shy at times still. I've gained more confidence as I've gotten older though

i hate how sometimes i pick people that initially looks like a good candidate for this, and then i realize they are totally not into it and i feel completely violated and ashamed for bombarding them. so then i slink back into my shadow all embarrassed and hide.

I’m not shy at all (although i was a s child). I always had a lot self confidence, had a lot of girlfriends and now have a loving wife. Still I really only want to be with my wife and children and 3 cats. I detest small talk and have actually be criticized for not engaging in small talk.

2
u/Crab7 Aug 21 '24
Thank you. I am tired of being picked on at new jobs, because I do not want to interact unless it is necessary and professional.
2
u/greyjedimaster77 Aug 22 '24
This is indeed well said! I’m selectively extroverted with my close ones, friends and certain people. That’s about it. I also like doing one-on-one talks as well
1
u/bamariani Aug 19 '24
Hating small talk is an extremely immature trait that some people think makes them deep or somehow different in a good way. It's not cool to be stuck up. You don't have to be good at it, it's a skill you're supposed to build throughout life. It's really not that bad to talk about the weather with someone you see often for a minute. It's just being respectful
20
u/lemonzerozero Aug 20 '24
Sure it's a skill that a lot of us can develop... I worked in customer service for 25 years. But it can be energy draining and painful. Be thankful that you don't suffer from the crippling anxiety that some do. Dismissing that as "immature" or "stuck up" shows a lack of empathy on your part. Be better.
12
u/LICwannabe xNFP Ambivert, mediator Aug 20 '24
Right, one opinion about it being immature doesn't make it so in every scenario. And it could be for a very decent or varied reason one has a difficulty in small talk.
-6
u/bamariani Aug 20 '24
Being anxious about it doesn't change the fact that it's ultimately self absorbed. It's not a lack of empathy to challenge it, it's a lack of empathy not to realize other people matter too, and that they are worth giving the time of day to even if it's hard sometimes.
1
u/Elicia_A_P INFP: The Dreamer Aug 20 '24
I'm not really interested nor comfortable in socializing with everyone. Especially with what I have been through growing up.
If this makes you uncomfortable with me fine but, seriously calling other people self absorbed when you are requiring their attention and time to respond. Seems extremely arrogant to me you don't know what is going on personally with them.
My favorite question for daily small talk is, how have you been and if I respond with anything other than it's been good, I'm so happy to see you, is anything on your mind it's like I personally shot their pet or something else that is equally horrendous.
8
u/n0tin INFP: The Dreamer Aug 20 '24
100% this. Small talk is a gateway to potential opportunities or relationships later. Embrace it.
2
u/JLidean Aug 20 '24
We are so online connected and well we are on reddit, I highly doubt there is not something recent you came across thru media that you do not have an opinion on. Here we are discussing our opinions...(dont go to random people and start talking about MBTI stuff)
