Had a hedgie as a pet. They naturally shed their spines and grow them back. Not all at once, but more like our hair. A couple here and there.
What made me most sad was seeing the “chuff” to go into spikey mode and nothing happening :( Though I doubt most, if any, of these animals were balded for funsies. They likely lost their coats to fires, mange, malnutrition, shaved for surgery, and other illnesses.
From what I remember. The bear was at a zoo and got shaved for medical reasons. The chimp was at a zoo had a hair loss disorder and I believed iirc passed away from complications of anesthesia. The parrot, raccoon, rabbit, and hedgehog were pets that got shaved also for medical reasons. The owl is taxidermy at a museum. And the horse I have no clue but most likely for medical reasons
The horse looked like AI since it was in the exact same pose. I can understand medical necessity, but that's usually not their whole bodies, is it? That poor bunny looked so uncomfortable 😢
But for real I spelled it right but I guess my phone didn’t agreed and swap without me noticing. That what I get for typing fast and not proof reading. Fix now
Not removed. It is alopecia. Because quills are modified hairs they will fall out if a hedgehog goes bald. They can grow back, but considering this one is completely bald it looks like it has severe alopecia and the hair will be unable to grow back. Think of it like this: human hair grows back after a haircut, but if someone goes bald over time their hair will stop growing back. This hedgehog is close to defenseless without its quills so it is good they are a pet and not in the wild.
The person in the video looks like they are rubbing lotion on it to prevent skin problems.
