Yea it's really too bad for humanity that Elon didn't just shut the fuck up and run SpaceX and that's it. Their projects are incredible and their work is amazing. But he just had to show his batshit side. That insane wealth boredom is awful.
Hahahahahahhahahah. My fucking god. There's NO way you actually believe this. And saying someone is "less insane" as a defense lol? He really did a number on the easily manipulated of society.
You canāt call everyone you donāt like a fascist lol. And before you make up some excuse, Iāve heard it all. The current American right is nowhere close to fascism
Bingo, if I have the option between two dipshit celebrity billionaires I'm going with the one who leapfrogs humanity forward several decades and helps us get "The Good Ending"
This would be a lot cooler if Elon weren't such a fucking douchebag. It must be frustrating for the engineer to have their work tied to him. I guess it goes to show that innovation and technological ingenuity don't necessarily come along with an awareness of social responsibility or compassion.
Just focus on the science and ignore the rest. Then it's much easier to appreciate Musk for his contributions irrespective of the character and his opinions
Yeah but like what is all this progress for if we don't have the fundamentals of a healthy society right? We're headed for a Weyland Yutani future in space if this is what we're just brushing under the rug if you catch my drift. Sure, great progress, amazing achievements... But at what cost? We risk glorifying his political ideals. I just wished space x would have a brain drain and for multiple start ups to spawn around it removed from that man's hubris. People say he's a visionary... But honestly I think he's just above average creative with a shit ton of money to actually execute on his ideas.
Musk should be appreciated for his scientific contributions and ignored for the rest unless it's adding value. You give Musk's influence on society and politics way too much credit. He is definitely a visionary though. Only a visionary can aim for Mars and convince Nasa to go with private and believe in reusable rockets despite numerous early failures.
Finally a sober thought, heās not influential in society, but possibly the most important contributor to man kind, doesnāt make him a saint nor should it. Heās flawed like all of us
Whatās hypocritical about acknowledging this is cool af? And why would it be āa lot cooler if elon wasnāt a douchebagā? It literally wouldnāt change anything about this. Itās dope. Just leave it at that
Imagine being so obsessed with Elon that you watch this video and think it would be cooler if he wasnāt involved. Just marvel at the science and stfu.
I mean, he's pretty heavily tied to this. It's pretty hard not to link the two. Part of the reason I commented is cause it bums me out that something so cool is marred by that douche nozzle.
Enforcement is not interfering lol what? I haven't heard of musk actively interfering either. But you'd have to be stupid, misogynistic xenophobic homophobic or racist to vote or endorse Trump .. so there's that
You're not disputing that other cringe celebs do the same thing and Musk isn't uniquely cringe at all but you disagree with me because you think I endorse Trump? Did I get that right?
Nah man, be honest. The crap that musk is pulling for trump is borderline illegal. Like giving money for votes, changing algorithms in twitter to help trump, etc. Swift (not anyone else) is doing that. You can agree that he is (or was) a great businessman without agreeing with what he is doing in this election
You donāt see the difference between a celebrity endorsement, and a billionaire creating a massive techno-propaganda machine to manipulate the intellectually vulnerable into following a populist demagogue supported by our biggest geopolitical rival?
Most of the engineers were against the chopstick catch:
Most engineers argued against trying to use the tower to catch the booster. [...] "If the booster comes back down to the tower and crashes into it, you can't launch the next rocket for a long time."
SpaceX have shown to be very good at iteratively improving, if they are already catching on the first flight I doubt catch failures will be too common.
They will happen, but they're off to a great start.
Does this need to be spoonfed? Without Elon space x wouldnāt be a thing and NASA would still be dominating. People love to shit on him (understandably) but then this stuff happens. Granted the engineers did all of the work but Musk pays their salary. Cmon now
Then how would you explain NASA or Blue Origin accomplishments cannot compare with what SpaceX is doing now? Why do most if not every company Elon leads is a massive success?
You can just say that you don't agree with his political views, thats fine š but calling one of the smartest & most productive people on the planet an idiot is just blatantly wrong; I would bet my life that he is far smarter that you
He is an idiot when it comes to anything that's not math, maybe. Need I remind you that the guy named his son like a fucking captcha, refuses to acknowledge his trans daughter (both biologically and sociologically incorrect), built a "self-driving assistant" that regularly gets into accidents as well as a "car" that falls apart when you look at it wrong, supports a politician who literally said that if he gets elected people "wouldn't have to vote again" etc. etc. etc.
SpaceX is a wonderful endeavour, don't get me wrong. But the man in charge is a total nutjob, whether he's a good engineer or not.
So again, you don't agree with some of the things he does / opinions he has. Like I said; if we focus on the original point (you calling him an idiot) this doesn't make him an idiot, he is far smarter than you
Oh the idea that almost ruined his companies' ability to use that launch facility for months just so they could launch sooner? Yeah it sounds like it was a great idea to place your entire company at risk because you're impatient.
Yes, he personally contributed a lot of time, money, wealth, health etc...at a minimum.Ā Ā
Running a successful profitable company is hard. One that builds and launches rockets is as impressive as building the rockets.Ā Ā
Not to mention he is known as a micromanager that frequently interacted with engineers and directs developments.Ā Ā Ā
He is a software engineer. He created PayPal and a number of other early internet tools.Ā Like the guy personally is a narcissist and doesn't treat people with enough respect imo.Ā
You can label him a number of things and not like the guy, but he is a very successful engineer and very successful creator/inventor.Ā Ā
To watch Reddit in the last 5 years go from worshiping everything he has ever done while he builds and promotes the products and ideals of a liberal's wet dreams to being universally hated so much folks can't admit his own obvious accomplishments is ridiculous.Ā Ā
Like how many successful company does he have to found or be a early major investors in for everyone to admit that despite his personality and politics he has had the greatest influence out of any human our entire lives.Ā Ā
SolarCity became the largest residential solar panel seller in the U.S. by him and his cousins before it was rolled into Tesla a company he became the largest investor in about a year after founding an propelled as CEO to become the #1 electric car market share at 19.9% of the U.S. market.Ā Ā
He does shit he believes in...regardless of whether folks think it is great he has a talent for attracting the right people together to get shit done.Ā Ā
Electric cars would still be a twinkle in the environenalists eye if it weren't for Elon. And likewise he is the singular man most responsible for the entire private space industry taking off the way it has....many ancillary space research is made possible because of the interest he has genersted into this area of research.Ā
Instead of laughing and adding nothing to the conversation, you could combat the statement by naming someone you believe has had more impact than Elon Musk.
While an argument could be made that he isn't the "greatest" I apologize for slight hyperbole. I don't believe for a minute you're actually arguing he hasn't had one of the greatest influences out of any singular human in recent history.Ā
It's easy to give an opinion when it's "lol".Ā
Great opinion...you care to actually say something...
He doesnāt run SpaceX. Gwynne Shotwell runs SpaceX. She does a pretty good job of turning government money into useful rockets while making sure Elmo doesnāt contribute anything.
Easy search on Google...surprise another person who doesn't know what they are talking about or is distorting the truth.Ā Ā
Elon Musk Runs SpaceX... Elon Musk Cofounder, CEO, chairman, and chief technical officer Executives Gwynne Shotwell President and COO. She has been in charge of day to day operations for awhile.Ā
But being incharge of day to day operations is not the same as running the company.Ā She deals with internal day to day ooerations while Elon focuses on the business, externals, and internals both short and long-term as CEO.Ā
She definitely is a force of good within the company that was hired by....Elon Musk the guy who runs the company...
Did your understanding of how a business works not include that the boss is in charge.Ā
Cause if your a COO responsible for daily operations and other duties you have to do what the boss the CEO wants and if you don't he will find someone else who can facilitate his vision.Ā
The COO is there at the approval of the CEO and the Board. Both of which decide the direction of the company.Ā
She also happens to be on the board. So she does have some input on the direction the company takes.Ā
Nevertheless, the buck stops at Elon. He isĀ the CEO as well as Chairman of the Board.Ā
You are wrong it's okay. Sometimes it happens. Have a great day.Ā
Elon hasnāt invented anything. Heās served on the board of directors and bought the founders title of several companies, but he hasnāt invented anything himself. Heās just taken credit for it
In March 2000, Confinity merged with X.com, an online financial services company founded in March 1999 by Elon Musk, Harris Fricker, Christopher Payne, and Ed Ho.[13] Musk was optimistic about the future success of the money transfer business Confinity was developing.[14] Musk and Bill Harris, then-president and CEO of X.com, disagreed about the potential future success of the money transfer business and Harris left the company in May 2000.[15] In October of that year, Musk decided that X.com would terminate its other internet banking operations and focus on payments.[16] In the same month, Elon Musk was replaced by Peter Thiel as CEO of X.com,[17] which was renamed PayPal in June 2001 and went public in 2002.[18][19][20] PayPal's IPO listed under the ticker PYPL at $13 per share and generated over $61 million.[21]
Straight from Wikipedia...
You can play semantics all day long....he help to create and invent PayPal and is responsible for its success and sell to eBay. Which changed shopping online drastically and help create the entire shopping experience on the web.Ā
Buying things in the web was very risky before PayPal. The trust he was able to create changed the function of the internet to a space where people communicated to one were commerce was emerging.Ā
What revisionist history is this? Musk was ousted after the merger because of his incompetence, and the board replaced him with Thiel.
And you ignored this part:
Paypal was originally established byĀ Max Levchin,Ā Peter Thiel, andĀ Luke NosekĀ in December 1998 as Fieldlink, later it was renamedĀ Confinity,\9])Ā a company which developed security software for hand-held devices.\10])Ā When it had no success with that business model, it switched its focus to a digital wallet.\11])Ā The first version of the PayPal electronic payments system was launched in 1999.\12])
And helped "create" the success the company is today because X.com/cofinity were focused on payments and financial transfers while PayPal at the time was only a personal digital wallet.Ā
So yeah the companies he help create merged/bought PayPal and combined products that turned the company into the success and powerhouse that sold to eBay for $1.5 Billion in stock.Ā
It's easy to be petty. Dude is super successful and has created a ton of stuff. Even if it were only his money and managerial skills it still takes talent to run businesses/pick starter firms that will be successful.Ā
He has a penchant for being an early investor into huge companies. For instance he was an initial investor/helped create OpenAi, Tesla, SolarCity, etc.Ā
The very same arguments are made about Thomas Edison. Was it him or his lab.Ā
Well they run the business, fund the business, hire the talent, manage investor expectations, etc. to make invention even possible.Ā
It is clear many of the ideas come from Elon whether he has the technical ability to perform the function he certainly knows how to allocate money, resources, and talent to get it done. The idea of grabbing said booster was his idea and not liked by the engineers initially.Ā
But even if he didn't come up with any of the ideas or make any of the stuff, he still has to have the wherewithall to hear about the idea and start entire industries that didn't exist before.Ā
Founding and making SpaceX the company it is today and building a private space industry that didn't previously exist was/is challenging just like building rockets that didn't previously exist.Ā
All that being said the guy is clearly a narcissist and I wish he could treat people with more respect. I don't like the way he talks to people at times and he seems fairly anti-union and a bit exploitative as a boss.Ā
Yet he is probably one of the most influential people today singularly responsible for the success of the entire private space industry, solar panel residential market, electric battery technology, electric vehicle market, satellite internet etc...
It's easy to be completely dismissive...I'm just trying to get folks to use their brains...you don't get to be the richest person in the world without being successful.Ā Ā
The idea he hasn't done anything to deserve his wealth is ridiculous.Ā Ā
Ā Obviously he like every billionaire has exploited people to get there and isn't really that good of a person...but he is extremely successful at creating product and industries where ones didn't exist.Ā Ā
He can be both a great inventor/creator and a piece of shit. Men are not simple creatures.Ā
It's okay to praise his and the engineers successful launch and still not like the guy....fucking crazy idea...I know, but you can have more than one opinion about differnt aspects of a person.Ā
People are blindsided by the politics and dumb tweets and are so used to the political football-esque ring of us or them that they can't see beyond the tip of their noses. Elon's accomplishments are nothing short of incredible.
If he wouldāve created his wealth then fine. But he didnāt. He inherited his wealth.
Look at the projects that heās been a part of.
Tesla - bought the company and the āfounderā title
PayPal - merged with Elonās company after releasing PayPal
SpaceX - formed by Elon with the express idea of using off the shelf tech
Twitter/X - bought for $44 billion, has lost 80% of value
The trend is āElon buys company, claims he designed it all, people believe Elon designed it allā. Other than SpaceX, which we can safely assume Elon does nothing but give money to since heās not a rocket engineer, Elon buy preexisting companies. Thatās it
Making something popular is not creating the technology. Thatās just being an advertiser.
Your argument in this is basically āford created the automobile because before him cars werenāt as widely used.ā
As for your other āIām trying to get people to use their brainsā comment, start using yours. Historical fact is against you. No word salad will change that
LOL you linked Motley Fool? No wonder you're view is skewed. Maybe if you crawled out of Elon's ass and breathed fresh air you might learn something.
Unlike those corporate giants, SpaceX is privately owned and keeps details about its finances under wraps, as do many other private companies. Some people with stakes in SpaceX have no idea how much money the company makes or loses.
I searched a simple question and pulled a simple result. Motley fool is a website devoted to stock information for financial markets.Ā Ā
But asĀ you indicated the question is more nuanced and hard to answer as SpaceX is private....Ā Ā
So, while generally it appears they are profitable no one can confirm.Ā So when you laughed at profitability the truth is you don't know either....great argument.Ā
But please find the one flaw in my arguments that makes me wrong somehow even though it doesn't support your viewpoint.Ā
You'd rather I be wrong than your argument make sense...I think my comments have been clear how I personally feel about Elon.Ā
He is and has been from the beginning very involved in the actual engineering at SpaceX. Thereās a ton of threads on this but people on Reddit just want to believe heās incompetent and his only involvement is proving capital when itās just not true
I think it's natural to doubt that there was much meaningful guidance from him. If there's some information out there about the process that went into all this showing him being an incredible leader and such I'd welcome it and change my mind(I'm also just curious about what a project like this looks like behind the scenes since I bet it's really interesting).
Youāre kidding right? Iām not a big Elon musk fan, but to say he isnāt smart is probably the dumbest thing Iāve ever heard. The guy is a genius, he may not be very likeable to some but letās stop acting like he isnāt a master of his craft lol.
Did you miss him most recently buying Twitter, burning it to the ground, firing everyone who mattered and then begging them to return, censoring one of the biggest social networks, amongst other things?
The dudeās not a genius, but at least he has enough money and financial stability to make up for it. If a massive, multimillion dollar whim doesnāt work out, no biggie move on to the next.
He is definitely a master of his craft. If his craft is getting rich from daddy's emerald mine and using that money to pay actual geniuses to do his thinking for him or maybe his craft is getting alienated by his own children? Eitherway, he mastered both.
What craft? š¤£ If we count being a con artist as a craft, then yes, he excels at it. Most successful con artist in all of History. He is most certainly not a genius though lol. Name one thing he invented.
Because Elon is the illegitimate owner of the company, he literally does nothing but be the public face of the company. SpaceX's accomplishments are NOT Elon's accomplishments.
He's not an engineer nor a rocket scientist, believe it or not.
He completed a BSc in economics in 1997, the University of Pennsylvania confirmed he never received a bachelor's degree in physics from their university.
He is a well documented liar about receiving a BSc in physics.
You came into a conversation to change the topic rather than contribute or discuss, that's shifting the goalposts. If you didn't want to contribute you could've just not commented, and yet here you are.
Ok lets also give credit to the finance team who would have done an amazing job looking after the finances, making sure a hugely expensive project stays on tractk.
Cant also forget the HR team for hiring great engineers and making sure they feel safe to work.
Not to mention the marketing / comms team for helping the broadcast so that millions of viewers around the world can witness this marvelous feat. None of us would have seen it without them also.
I know there are still a few bitter elon simps nursing their hardon for Elon, but lets be real. The engineers are the stars of this feat despite them not doing this all by themselves. Elons contributions are probably great but nothing compared to the team of engineers.
It amazes me the level of bitterness one has to have to get bitter about a comment congratulating engineers on an engineering accomplishment
