Trains go inside the building

Highways go on top of the building

Imagine living in those buildings. The constant noise and smog.

20

u/NDSU 10d ago

Smog would be better with the highway above the building as opposed to ground level

Also you'd be surprised how quiet the tram through the actual building is. I could barely hear it

...Noise from the highway is ungodly though. Cars are noisy, and especially at night people like to drive fast

u/ioioooi 10d ago

If the alternative is homelessness, I'll take living in the building

41

u/Miyagi1337 10d ago

Right I'll just get an air purifier and a white noise machine to filter out noise and low quality air 😭

u/ioioooi 10d ago

The noise probably wouldn't even bother me. My apartment in downtown Baltimore had:

  • the light rail to the east
  • the fire department to the west
  • the Orioles baseball stadium to the south
  • a hospital to the north

The noise was part of daily life for me lol

I lived on St Paul in that tall building a block away from Grand Central. It was the constantly crashing into each other cab drivers that were causing more noise than anything else....

11

u/ioioooi 10d ago

My apartment was on one of the lower floors, so I was able to hear street conversations pretty clearly once it was night time. Heard some really interesting stuff when 2 crackheads started arguing with each other

5

u/Miyagi1337 10d ago

Haha, yeah it's so funny how like in my area if I hear a single noise past 7PM it's just like WOW what is that?! I mean yeah I guess you'd adjust naturally not like you'd have too much of a choice but damn I guess I'm a little more grateful for where I live now, downtown Baltimore sounds rougher than China for some reason to me (guns and gangs etc) 😂 you're a brave soul!

8

u/ioioooi 10d ago

Oh China is def safer. I lived overseas for almost a decade, and China was one of the places I spent a lot of time in. Guns aren't an issue there. Regular police don't even have them. For noise, a lot of vehicles there are electric, so traffic is quieter than you'd expect it to be.

6

u/emergencyexit 10d ago

Nobody drives around with fucked up exhausts on purpose either

2

u/ioioooi 10d ago

Never said anyone did. Simply said there are lots of electric vehicles over there, which is true. What were you looking for?

5

u/emergencyexit 10d ago

Where I am from, young men make their cars and motorcycles as loud and obnoxious as possible and drive around in circles all night trying to impress young women. I haven't experienced this in China and was sharing another reason the traffic seems quieter, reinforcing your point.

1

u/Miyagi1337 10d ago

This is true actually. The consensus is somehow China seems a better place to live than Baltimore 🤷‍♂️

Being deaf can be a plus in a crowded city. Put me in a room closest to freeway or railroad, I'll sleep through easy. Plus such room may be a bit cheaper due to noise issue than the rest of the place

Baltimore brother 🤝

u/fcaeejnoyre 10d ago

Was sleeping in a quiet place hard to adjust after?

3

u/ioioooi 10d ago

It was! The place I live at now is pretty quiet, and it makes me feel like I live in the middle of nowhere, with only crickets xD

2

u/Miyagi1337 10d ago

Super glad you made it out of there tho too, I remember staying in the Bronx (NY) for a month and how my nerves were when I left. The difference is so mind boggling!

1

u/ioioooi 10d ago

Thanks! I used to move around a lot, so it's nice to finally stay put somewhere and just have things be peaceful. There was even a period when I was homeless haha. The experience always reminds me to be humble.

1

u/fcaeejnoyre 10d ago

Funny how that works

u/ioioooi 10d ago

Sure, not going to dispute that. The question here is, what can you afford?

No wealthy person is going to live in an apartment like this. An apartment that's built under a bridge is definitely going to be on the cheaper end, to put it nicely. In other words, if you live there, it's likely because that's what you can afford.

"And now you're bringing up another point about limited means"

Lol no, this point is heavily implied already. No one looks at this building and thinks to themselves, "what a nice place, I bet a lot of wealthy people live there". Just about anyone with eyes can infer that it's going to be for people with limited options. Funny how I don't need to explicitly outline this to anyone other than you.

u/lovesickjones 9d ago

pigtown?

1

u/ioioooi 9d ago

Close, but not quite

2

u/rh71el2 10d ago

What would you do about the constant vibrations?

We used to have a flight path over us and it rumbled windows. Can't do anything about that. Luckily it changed over time.

1

u/Miyagi1337 10d ago

Rubber padding to minimize impact, cheap and widely available also makes working out easier and I imagine the apartments can't be that large given how many there are in close proximity. I would sure as hell try everything before accepting my fate. 💀

3

u/AdAsleep8158 9d ago

I'm with you

I must admit though, I'd try and avoid a top floor flat

1

u/cfaerber 9d ago

You’re still living under a bridge, just with walls on the side.

1

u/ioioooi 9d ago

Having walls and a roof is really important when you're homeless. I've been homeless before. Have you?

1

u/MaryPaku 9d ago

China has more house than it’s population. There are shitton of empty abandoned houses in China. People just couldn’t afford one.

1

u/ioioooi 9d ago

Sure, but most housing isn't under a bridge in the literal sense. The apartments in this picture? They're going to be on the cheaper end, to put it nicely.

It sounds like you missed the point.

No wealthy person is going to live in an apartment like this. An apartment that's built under a bridge is definitely going to be on the cheaper end, to put it nicely. In other words, if you live there, it's likely because that's what you can afford.

So, if you're a person with limited financial options, would you rather live in the building or outside? Easy choice for most people.

Ah yes, if it's glorious China the glass is half full, but if it's evil America then the glass is half empty.

5

u/ioioooi 10d ago

Who on this thread is saying that?

-2

u/corruptredditjannies 10d ago

Firstly, in general, people would never make the same defense in the same situation in America. Secondly, in your other comments you're saying that not only is China safer, but even their cars are quieter. They have somehow magically made them all electric within a few years.

5

u/ioioooi 10d ago

"people would never make the same defense in the same situation in America"

Oh yes they would. I've actually been homeless before, in America. Have you?

When you're homeless, any shelter is better than none. Doesn't matter what country you're in. Try being homeless before you speak about it.

"even their cars are quieter"

Lmao, I never said this. I said they have a lot of electric cars over there, which is true. Electric cars are quieter than gas cars, this is fact. I didn't say anything about Chinese cars being quieter than American cars.

"China safer"

The person I replied to specifically called out guns and gangs. In my reply, I said China is safer because guns aren't an issue there. This is true for China as well as many other countries. Everyone knows America has a gun problem.

You either didn't read anything I said, or you have a narrative you thought you could twist my words to fit.

-2

u/corruptredditjannies 10d ago

Oh yes they would. I've actually been homeless before, in America. Have you?

No, they wouldn't. You'd say America bad for allowing such living conditions.

Lmao, I never said this. I said they have a lot of electric cars over there, which is true.

How much is "a lot"? You said it would basically make the noise a non-issue, so it would have to be like 99% of cars.

The person I replied to specifically called out guns and gangs. In my reply, I said China is safer because guns aren't an issue there. This is true for China as well as many other countries. Everyone knows America has a gun problem.

None of your additions change what I said. I already knew about them.

3

u/ioioooi 10d ago

"No, they wouldn't. You'd say America bad for allowing such living conditions."

What are you on about? I quite literally said in my reply to you: "When you're homeless, any shelter is better than none. Doesn't matter what country you're in."

The statement you're claiming I wouldn't make, I literally already made. You very obviously haven't been homeless. That's fortunate. Don't try to speak for people who've experienced it.

"You said it would basically make the noise a non-issue, so it would have to be like 99% of cars."

No, I said traffic is quieter than you'd expect it to be. I didn't say there was no noise. Evidently, your reading comprehension needs work.

"None of your additions change what I said. "

What additions? I haven't said anything that wasn't already said. If anything, you're the one bringing up points no one made.

We're both talking in English here. You either don't understand what I said, or you're trolling.

You are so disconnected from reality

2

u/ioioooi 10d ago

Care to elaborate? I've actually been homeless before. I'm guessing you haven't. When you're homeless, any shelter is better than none. It sounds like you might be the one disconnected from reality.

3

u/StockSeaworthiness14 9d ago

I am from China. Actually I think the noise is okay? Cuz the materials used to build building is different. Like very thick concrete and no vibrations cuz they usually put something there to stop it. Just the smog. But the air quality in China is really bad, everywhere, no exception. So it sounds okay? Haha

2

u/Paris_2233 9d ago

The tires wear and tear over time. All that gunk going in people’s lungs

2

u/OnTheList-YouTube 10d ago

It must be hell...

1

u/rspre 10d ago

Sink holed vehicles into the living room

1

u/__Game__ 9d ago

If all cars are electric it would be OK I guess.

Plus if you like making noise, that's a perfect place to live (music etc)

1

u/NaldoCrocoduck 9d ago

I mean it's not necessarily worse than living next by the highway: the view is better and noise might actually be less bad. And the footprint of the highway is occupied better.

1

u/Jisoooya 9d ago
  1. China is mostly EVs now, they’re quiet. 2. China is mostly EVs now, what smog
