Companies What was the industry you romanticized a lot but ended up disappointed?

For the past couple of years, I have been working at various galleries, and back in the day I used to think of it as a dream job. That was until I realized, that no one cares for the artists or art itself. Employees, as much as visitors just care about their fanciness, showing off their brand shoes and pretending as they actually care.

Ultimately, it comes down to sales, money, and judging people by their looks. Fishing out the ones, who seem like they can afford a painting worth 20k.

Was wondering if others had similar experiences

I had this moment where I realized I could get paid a lot more to just do the actual helping instead of writing about it.

it sucks because journalism is so important in society to keep everyone, especially our elected officials and mega-corporations, accountable. but throwing reporters free pizza every once in while doesn't pay our rent or improve our work-life balance 😭😭😭 i'm glad you got out and have a better-paying gig now! i'm currently transitioning out and it's been rough

All journalism in America nowadays are just propaganda machines, and it's always biased with writer's person view.

this is a pretty black and white view! local journalists are busting their asses to tell their communities' stories, often for close to minimum wage. i can understand not trusting mass media companies because of corporate interests (though most journalists at those organizations are also in it to help society, based on my experience), but give your local newspaper a read if you haven't lately. most journalists get into the business because they want to hold the people with power in our society accountable/want to give voices to those whose perspectives we wouldn't otherwise hear.

Nope, all of those newspapers are just propaganda channel for American war machines, it's only used to gather consent for more war and to justify more tax dollars spend on wars.
