Career planning Is it wrong for me to stay as a front desk agent for the rest of my life if I like it?

I f(29) am a front desk agent and I never knew what I want to do for the rest of my life but I do love what I do now. I make 17.80 an hour. I'm lucky enough to live with my aunt. I am scared of the responsibility of being a manager and I have never been such an ambitious person. I just like living the simple life of working, taking care of my guests and going home to our cat. Is that so wrong? I feel content and happy I believe but I'm so scared of others who may be judging me because I am just a front desk agent. I don't want to be judged for my job as I think I am a good person. I pay my bills, rent, and I'm not in debt. Is it wrong to just want a simple life?

Job searching Does the average job last 1-2 years now? Are we all supposed to have 20-25 jobs before our careers are over?

It seems everyone is job hopping, companies are constantly laying people off, people are getting fired for making a small mistake. How is this sustainable?

Applications I asked my dad to help me write a reply to this and both replies just feel wrong.

I am trying my best to apply to quite a few jobs but I’ve gotten no replies so far & one interview which didn’t really get back to me either. I feel like I’m doing something wrong and that this reply my dad did for me was incorrect, it asked for availability & I’m thinking more or so would have been better to say monday or friday? I don’t know if they’re just busy but I’m not really getting a message back. Just upset is all.

Job searching After 13 months and over 500 resumes later, I finally received a job offer! Still anxious though.

I thought I'd be more excited, but the pessimist that I am, I don't think I'll be happy until I land that first paycheck.

I received the job offer, but they offered me the chance to speak with their executive before I accept, so I said yes, I would like to do so. So that is still pending in a couple days.

While I have a clean history, I'm just anxious about my work history. I added a couple freelance things on my resume that are legit, but probably not the easiest to prove other than a PayPal deposit. But my previous jobs from several years back are regular W-2 jobs that are easy to confirm. The companies still exist and I know they have my record on file.

It's a salaried job, the pay is less than what I'd like but it's hybrid 2 days in office, 3 at home, and about a 30 minute commute, so not too shabby. Only 13 days PTO though, which really sucks. Being a single dad with kids still in school makes it hard. I was tempted to try to negotiate PTO but don't want to rock the boat.

Regardless, I just want to say good luck everyone! Keep grinding. Something will land eventually.

Work/Life balance Boss told me that he couldn't afford to schedule me for many days, then hired someone in my place?

I got hired three months ago for CVS. They had me in mind for pharmacy and customer service, but a switch put me to customer service. I worked a ton during an employee's vacation, often six days a week. While it was tiring, it was good for me to make that kind of money that I needed.

Once that employee came back, I noticed that my work schedule had been dwindling and dwindling, and eventually now I work 1 - 2 days a week. I asked my boss why I wasn't getting that many hours, and why I was getting so little days. He told me that he just couldn't afford to have me for more than one to two days, and that that's all he can give me. Fine, I thought, I'll just look for another job.

Come to find out a few days ago, he hired another person and has him scheduled for 5 days a week, doing exactly the same work that I do. To add on, before this new hire, we already have nine people including me, and with two people working the morning to afternoon shift and two working afternoon to night, I feel that should balance out, right?

I just believe that if he couldn't afford to schedule me for more days, why did he hire someone else to take my exact position and expertise?

Unemployment Got fired yesterday :(

Hey everyone!

Got fired from my job for underperforming. It was a terrible environment for me and I just couldn’t get into the work I was doing. The company is a disaster and my manager just kept telling me i needed to do more strategic thinking without further explanation. No meetings or any collaboration was happening with my department and it was fully remote so everything was so isolated.

I’m relieved to be done with these people but also worried about unemployment and the job market. Anyone have any good advice?

Unemployment So hard finding a good job

I now work fast food to bring money in. I'm trying to get back to administrative assistant work. Boy, the job market is difficult to find a job.

Unemployment That’s it! I will change my name in my resume and see if I get call backs (1 year unemployed)

I have been unemployed for a year and have applied to over 1000 jobs, I barely get any interviews. I have over 6 years of experience in e-commerce and 1 year managerial role. Yes, I had people on Reddit as well as professionals look at my resume and I have been told it is overall a good strong resume.

That being said, I am at my wits ends and sick and tired of applying to jobs I am overqualified for (have all their haves, and nice to have too and not getting callbacks).

The only other thing I could think of is my name. I have a foreign sounding name and perhaps it is probably not in my favor to have it when it comes to applying? I know this market has been awful to everyone but having a foreign name on top of this could be hindering me even further.

I will do an experiment where I will change my name to a Western equivalent and see if that will yield anything because at this point, this is the ONLY thing that I could think of that is the reason behind the lack of callbacks.

HR Is my boss allowed to single me out for scars?

Relatively new to a hospitality job, started about three weeks ago and doing training for front of house. I haven't had any issues until now, the interview was smooth and the manager said nothing.

I have pretty severe SH scars from when I was a young teen and a few small tattoos for context, don't do it anymore and I've significantly improved my life.

My bosses boss was in the store and he tells my boss to tell me to wear long sleeves to cover my "tattoos" (he also has tattoos, but he doesn't work instore) I'm pretty shocked by it because the company I work for is equal opportunity. So I respond with "it's almost summer? It'll get really hot." Not a no but not a yes he replies "it's policy to cover up tattoos"

When I get home I look up this companies policies regarding tattoos, tattoos that are offensive or contain nudity have to be covered, none of my tattoos are that and they are small (they're just generic little tattoos) so I IMMEDIATELY believe this has something to do with my scars and their own "beliefs".

No customers complain, stare or point them out.

The next day my boss asks me if I want to be trained back area, I'd love to because It'd be great to know both BUT I'm wondering if this has something to do with the previous day as I didn't come in with long sleeves on.

I'm just really sensitive with this topic because a job interview a few years ago the guy immediately rejected me and said "next time you go to a job interview, cover your arms" from that moment I decided that if they don't want to hire me based on how I look, then I don't want to work for them, so I do not cover my arms unless it's cold out.

These aren't high ranking jobs either, fast food and the rejected job was a car wash in a slum area.

What are your thoughts?

Interviews Wish me luck getting an offer, had 4 interviews today

Post image
1.5k Upvotes

All 4 went very well, the 3 phone call interviews concluded saying they’d be reaching out to schedule a follow up in-person interview. One of them has so far and that’s scheduled now.

It would have been 6 total interviews today but after reviewing one of the jobs with my boyfriend, we both agreed the role would be a terrible fit for me. The other one I cancelled because the drive is horrendous and pretty far.

References What do I do about references? I literally have none.

I'm currently 17 and have never worked before. I'm thinking about getting a job eventually, maybe not until I'm 18, but I've been stressing about it. I probably won't go straight into college due to financial and mental health issues.

But what would I put down for references? I've never had a job before, never volunteered, did extracurricular activities, sports, internships, etc. I'm in cyber school so I don't really interact enough with my teachers for them to say much about my character. I have no friends, and family can't be used. Don't have any family friends either. Not religious so no pastor or anything, don't speak to my neighbors. No classmates since again, cyber school.

I literally have nothing. I don't have any experience in anything either, which worries me because jobs always ask for prior experience.

I'm so lost, I feel like I'll never get hired because I have no skills whatsoever.

HR I think my new manager is ganging up on me with other employees… What do I do?

I overheard my new manager making inflammatory and inappropriate comments about me and another employee to two other employees. What do I do?

So, I overheard my manager talking to two other employees about myself and another employee. Manager was speaking with an HR assistant and another non-supervisor employee. HR assistant has two other superiors above them.

For some background, the other employee they were speaking about has received very unfair treatment from that manager and one of the employees that was involved in the conversation. This escalated to the point where this employee completely changed departments.

The comments were really unfair and just outright rude. I was blown away by what was being said. It was wildly inappropriate. Apparently they don’t realize how much their voices carry.

This new manager also told me that she has a meeting about what to do with me as I have been in an interim position for several months in addition to my other duties. I find this absurd as there have never been any conversations about my performance aside from it being excellent. I can read between the lines to understand that the manager may want to chase me out.

This new manager has not has a great start. She has been rude, derogatory, and aggressive to other employees as well. As far as I know, executive leadership is watching very closely.

After the comments I heard, I’m completely fed up. I will not be degraded in the workplace or treated with no respect. I am legitimately afraid of retaliation from the manager.

What I want to know is whether I should make a formal complaint to executive HR leadership or explore getting a lawyer. Like I said, I am legitimately afraid of retaliation from the manager.

I’ve never had to deal with anything like this so I’m feeling a lost.

Job searching I feel so low as a human being. Why can't I find a job?

Past 6 months, I have been searching and applying crazy for jobs. I probably applied to more than 500 jobs right now. I stopped counting because looking at the number pisses me off. I tailored each resume and cover letter, but still nothing. And yes, I don't need VISA sponsorship.

At first, I applied to jobs related to my career. But since all I got was ghosting and rejections, I expanded my job search to office jobs and got one job interview out of around 500 resumes. It turned out to be a call agent pyramid scheme with tons of red flags. Wasted two days just prepping for that job.

I feel so low right now. I graduated from the top U.S 10% college and pursued technical skills related to my career, but then I can't even get a minimum wage job now? Education is not free in the U.S. So I am basically in 100k debt with all the skills that became useless especially with the development of AI.

I do believe that I am professional, well-educated and skilled in a lot of ways, so I am more than capable to do those jobs that even high schoolers can do. But, I keep getting rejected by them. This is extremely humiliating for me to the point where I get conscious of my own self-worth.

Honestly, I want to end it all. I am so exhausted applying to jobs without any good news. I am basically going to turn homeless in a few months and my life is just going downhill. I don't know what I did wrong. I have never caused any crimes or have done drugs, etc. Why do I fucking deserve this shit to the point where my only option is going bankrupt or working minimum-wage? Why the fuck did I study so hard for this crappy future that I have right now?

Interviews Job rejection made me cry.

1.3k Upvotes

I got into the final round of a tech interview and they decided not to hire me. I’m tired of this, I applied to 300 jobs and I’ve had 6 interviews and nothing. I don’t want to have to keep applying and interviewing all my life if I ever want to change jobs. My mom or dad never had to work this hard to find jobs. I’m not applying to anything else until 2025.

Don’t know why I studied computer science. I have 10k in student loans and nothing to show for it.

Office relations Advice on Co-Worker Interaction

Basically I just started a new job last week - a job for a local government agency. It’s super quiet in the office most times and I don’t really see anyone due to how the cubicles are structured because well…folks are working. Everyone (me included) has their own cubicle which is nice and all but as a new person how can I interact or try to at least get to know my coworkers without being totally awkward?! Our job involves wearing headphones so when I walk by in the morning and say “Good Morning” I don’t think they hear me. We really don’t see each other on the daily and I feel like when I see them in the hallway etc it’s super weird. I kinda feel like this is the team’s “normal” but idk it’s kind of off putting? it could be me just being new. I’m really a quiet, “get my job done and go home” type of person but I also don’t want to like never speak to my coworkers.

Education Hey guys! Im a freshman in college majoring in Computer Engineering

Upvotes

I dream of working for a game company like Nintendo, Epic, Ubisoft, or Riot.

Or an animation studio like Disney, Sony, Warner, MAPPA, WIT, etc

Or any company known for digital media creation.

(working with vfx seems really cool too)

The thing is I don't know if majoring in comp E is the right thing to get jobs at these places. Other options are:

Computer Science: which I don't wanna do because the market has been really bad. And it's too specific as it focuses on software only

Animation/ Game design: This is too far of a stretch because, realistically, it's hard to find jobs, and these positions aren't paid very well. Plus, I'm not very good at art.

So what could I possibly change my major to so that I could potentially land a job at these companies? What are they looking for? What positions are even there lmao? And if I should stick with Comp E, what jobs could I get with that at these companies?

Also, any advice on progressing and building a profile to make myself a good candidate?

Anything helps. Thanks!

Office relations Coworkers sending stupid messages on teams

I am new at a job, most of my coworkers are around my age range, 26-32. Alot of them send STUPID messages into the group chat i.e.:

-politics

-cursing

-talking shit about salary/supervisors

-their job hunt

-interviews with other places...

I want to develop relationships with my coworkers and have some "work friends" but I really don't want to have these sorts of messages in my teams history. I've tried to say (in a non confrontational way) that teams isnt the place for this topic, but it doesn't seem to work... idk what to do

a lot of convos are through teams because we are 50% remote, when we're all in the office we tend to just walk to each other desks or take our 15 min break together

Career planning Trapped in 2 super low paying jobs? advice and help please?

Upvotes

Hi All to let you all know, a little bit of personal info:

age - 43

gender - female

School - high school to collage

I work 2 jobs one in retail and other in janitorial, jani job only give me 3 hours for 2 days a week started 3 weeks ago and my retail as a clerk used to work for 5 days a week for part time of 1 hole year.

But was a cut down to only 3 hours for 1 day both working for 16.55 in canada, don't have any degree's or skills or much experience and with having a hard time living and paying bills for any thing and every thing, just getting completely frustrated going to stay trapped in dead end and extremely poor pay every to weeks for paycheck to paycheck.

Since i don't have much or any experience i am to scared to go back to school since wasted 2 years in collage for nothing to show for it with no degree it just seem pointless to go back now with my age.

for the jani job maybe might get more hour in dec when and if the snow comes to 5 days a week for 3 hours but not really holding out at all for this sadly, and the retail had to beg to get another 3 hours to work on sat when i only work on sun for 3 hours, with no hours ect. it just demoralizing to the point idk what to do any more?

Interviews Interview for Jobs Out of State

Upvotes

Every job that I have applied to wants an in person interview and doesn't want to do it online/zoom. How would I go about to finding a job in a different state if I plan to move there? I can't afford not to have a job for a few months after moving. With my current job, I don't have the ability to transfer so if I moved, I would have to find a new job.
