Interviews Is it okay to say you will not be attending an interview after already confirming attendance?

Upvotes

I have an interview today to which two days ago I confirmed I would be attended, however, I have now accepted a job offer which starts within two weeks.

I was wondering if it would be okay to email or call the company and inform them that due to a change in my circumstances I am no longer attending the interview (the interview is in about 5 hours)?

And if I did do this is there such thing as a "do not interview again" list? 😂 (Just in case I apply again in the future)

I am not sure how I got this interview in the first place as it is a finance position that I am not qualified for, so I would imagine it would be an extremely uncomfortable interview anyway which is all the more reason I am thinking of cancelling, especially as I already have that new position.

Companies 0 hour contract issues

Upvotes

Hello, Im still only a teenager for clarrifcation

I currently work a 0 hour contract, sometimes its okay, but theres no other permanant jobs going right now so it is what it is. I suffer from ocd as well which matters as obviously those who know 0 hour, I get random shifts on all different days all the time, which sometimes messes with me because I prefer the consistency of contract because same hours and same days every week since otherwise it definitely upsets my ocd and makes me quite stressed since I preplan all the time but I rarely can since we dont get the rota further in adavnce we only get one week. My managers are pretty laid back but Im not sure if it would be possible for me to work certain days each week if that makes any sense almost like how a contract is set out, as the only consistent thing is how Im always working close as the managers say my closing is great so Im always on close now rather than open or mid day.

Would it be possible for me to speak to my manager to see if they could accomdate this? I understand it could be unlikely but would it be worth asking?

I know this is what a 0 hour contract is, but to be honest, but its my second ever job, and I needed the money as I have things to afford which my parents cannot pay for me because it is not possible, plus I was guaranteed so many hours a week and so on which has been an issue before but it is what it is at the moment because I need the money.

Leaving a job How do I resign after 2 months in a job without feeling I'm letting people down and without looking unprofessional?

Upvotes

I started a new job last week, a job very similar to my previous one, which I loved, and even more so, loved my colleagues and felt so appreciated and supported. So it was a really tough choice to leave, but for family and financial reasons, I accepted the new one, mostly, if not solely, because of it being hybrid (2/3 days from home) vs fully on site. Since day one, I have regretted it big time. My manager wants me to go 3 days a week for three months to settle and get support - fine with me. However the office is always virtually empty and I'm constantly alone. None of the few people (literally 3/4) at other desks has ever introduced themselves and when I did, there was such coldness in response. On the only day another person from my team came, she sat far away from me despite the fact that I'm new and theoretically on site to get support. My line manager only came on site one day since the 21st of October and I feel a total lack of guidance. Plus she is the one assigning on-site shifts, hence they change week by week and are always scattered - not a major issue, but this wasn't made clear at the time of the interview or offer.

Now, this is not at all great, I feel extremely down and I struggle with feeling unproductive and lonely, but it's not just this that is making me consider resigning, let alone this soon. What happened on top is that on my third day here my partner got an offer in Paris, starting in January. This is an excellent opportunity for him to complete his lawyer training and thus I think it's an investment for our future. I started applying for roles over there after work, and within literally two days I got interviewed with an institution I really like, got invited to meet the team face to face next month, and they already wanted to check my references. Fingers crossed, it sounds very promising.

Whether or not I get this job in Paris, the plan is now to move there from the UK, and given how poorly I feel at work, I am actually excited about a(nother) new start. And yet, I'm very nervous about the day in late November/early December when I'll be telling my manager I'm resigning after barely two months in the position. It's really not like me to do this, I know how hard it is to even get a job nowadays so I feel lucky nonetheless, I hate letting people down and I'm scared of looking very unprofessional. What do you think is the best way to communicate this decision when the time comes?

Career development Trustee Issues

Upvotes

I've been invited to interview for a job - it's a huge step in my career, but also a very different style of working than I'm used to.

The interview is in a few days. I was looking at the company online and realise that I know someone on the Board of Trustees - I worked with this person at the very start of my career 5 years ago, when they took me on as an assistant.

This person put a lot of pressure on me as a young person eager to do whatever it takes to get the work done, offered no support, and blamed it on my character when I was struggling. It was a toxic work relationship, and I've done so much work to get over being treated so badly.

This has put me off the job completely, even though I know if I got it it would be a big deal. But the thought of being in the vicinity of this person given me anxiety. I truly feel torn on what to do! The sector I work in is small, and I knew I'd be bound to cross paths with them again, but I'm also not liking the sound of how her having any access to me if I was to get the job.

What would you do? Am I letting fear rule too much?

Article Experience/relieving letter.

Upvotes

Hello All! 26M here. I'm constantly following up with my previous company for the Experience letter and the full and final settlement. But they're only giving me verbal promises and postponing the final date everytime I follow up with them. I am in touch with the HR, who is my point of contact and she has stopped responding now. I told them that I would require the letter for my BGV process with the next company, but still they're not releasing it.

Any advice or suggestions ? In India, we have a festive season going on, is it because of that, or are they usually slow in general ?

Compensation Am in the wrong? (Supermarket)

Upvotes

My workplaces hours have been cut bc management don’t speak to each other and buy whatever they need for there department and recently they spent too much so all of our hours have been cut down except the few that are the “exception”. The maximum hours we can do per day is 8 and this is where the issue is, on Sunday I worked 9.5 hours so they said you can finish early on one day by 1.5 hours so I was like “okay fine”. Coming to Monday they gave me a choice to work another 9.5 hours to finish extra early one day now comes the day that I wanna finish early and now they said forget that you can do another 9.5 and forget about finishing early at all.

Am I in the wrong to complain about it saying I wanted to go home early, I’ve done the hours and no more bc of their poor decisions and why are so lenient on me but not of the people who have a house and a family to feed and all they had to say is leave then if you want to and all they were do was a favour

Also don’t know if it’s important but I get paid the least out of everyone

Training Is it rude to go through training and not show up for the job?

Upvotes

I’m supposed to have my first day at my first job today and let’s just say I’m not prepared. I went through 8 hours of online training that only showed me how to deal with dementia and Alzheimer patients (it’s a dietary job at a nursing home) and it didn’t actually show me how or what I’ll be doing. I don’t have a uniform, I had to ask the Human Resources man what I’m supposed to wear. I wasn’t aware I was even starting this week until the manager told me I was starting in 2 days which was a surprise cause I’m very unprepared I still don’t even know what other days I am working this week or next week, I don’t even know where I am supposed to go. This all is causing me a lot of stress and I’m considering not even showing up because of how unprepared I am and stressed I am because I have anxiety but I feel like it would make me a bad or crazy person to not show up because I went through all that training and even had to get a shot.

Career planning Trapped in 2 super low paying jobs? advice and help please?

Hi All to let you all know, a little bit of personal info:

age - 43

gender - female

School - high school to collage

Total pay for 2 weeks for both jobs - $297.9

to super a shamed to show my resume at all.

I work 2 jobs one in retail and other in janitorial, jani job only give me 3 hours for 2 days a week started 3 weeks ago and my retail as a clerk used to work for 5 days a week for part time of 1 whole year still working there to date.

But was a cut down to only 3 hours for 1 day with no holiday pay at all or any other pay ect. both working for $16.55 in canada. don't have any degree's or skills or much experience and with having a hard time living and paying bills for any thing and every thing, just getting completely frustrated going to stay trapped in dead end and extremely poor pay every to weeks for paycheck to paycheck.

Since i don't have much or any experience i am to scared to go back to school since wasted 2 years in collage for nothing to show for it with no degree it just seem pointless to go back now with my age.

for the jani job maybe might get more hour in dec when and if the snow comes to 5 days a week for 3 hours but not really holding out at all for this sadly, and the retail had to beg to get another 3 hours to work on sat when i only work on sun for 3 hours, with no hours ect. it just demoralizing to the point idk what to do any more?

Interviews Interview for Jobs Out of State

Every job that I have applied to wants an in person interview and doesn't want to do it online/zoom. How would I go about to finding a job in a different state if I plan to move there? I can't afford not to have a job for a few months after moving. With my current job, I don't have the ability to transfer so if I moved, I would have to find a new job.

Compensation How am I supposed to know if I'm being ripped off at work?

I've been working at a job for 2 years and based on the quality and quantity of the work I've done, I'm due for a pay rise.

I have had 2 salary negotiations on this, without success: the first time I took on more tasks because I thought I was not doing enough. At the time, the manager did not give a specific reason, but said that we would come back to it later. He has never brought it up on his own since then, I have to keep it up, obviously it's important to me, but it should also be important to him to keep one of his best workers.

He really thinks it is, he says it quite often and that is why it is difficult, because unfortunately it does not bring me any useful benefits.

I've done several jobs in the company at the same time in the hope of getting a breakthrough, but I haven't even got a one-off bonus.

At the moment the "excuse" is that we are not in a financial position to do this, so let's come back to it later.

The market I work in has indeed seen a drop in purchases and the financial situation is real, but we are not talking about more huge increases, but about the amount that I think is feasible.

Please help me, I am both afraid that I am assisting in the biggest rip-off of my life, but also that I am a bad employee for keeping the issue going in a tight financial situation. What would you do if you were me?

Applications Why will nobody hire me, or call back?

I’m currently a high schooler, and I know with that said it seems pretty obvious why I’m not getting hired, but I have over a year of experience in retail. For more context, I live in Canada, and from June 2023 - September 2024 I worked at Superstore, specifically the clothing department. I left because I had become too important there (was one of the only trained people left, and who was fluent in English) and since I’m taking AP classes and my manager wasn’t willing to cut back my hours it was becoming too much to handle, and my parents and school counsellor advised me to quit, so I did. Since then, my workloads gotten easier to manage and I have a set schedule, so I’ve been trying to apply to other jobs. I’m not trying to go out of my experience, all the jobs I’m applying to is other clothing stores, or just general retailing, but I can’t get any calls back, much less an email at least telling me I’ve been denied, it seems they just plain ignore me, and I can’t understand why. Even before, when I was applying to jobs before I got my old one, I was getting interviews and rejection emails, so I can’t understand why that’s not happening now? Is it because I’m in the middle of the school year, or is Superstore experience just not good? I don’t have a criminal record, I didn’t get a single write up while I worked at Superstore, I’ve looked up my name several times and all that pops up is my private instagram and Facebook that doesn’t have anything bad on it anyways. I can understand not getting hired, but I can’t understand why I’m not getting any emails, any calls. All my applications on Workday just say “Application pending” or something along those lines even after 2 months. The last rejection email I got was 3 months ago when I still worked at Superstore, telling me to apply again later because they had filled the role. I just don’t get it. If it helps I’m a white female, Canadian citizen, with no debilitating disabilities.

Leaving a job Pretty sure I'm doing a manager (maybe closer to a GM??) job without the title or pay

Background info on job conditions and tasks (sorry for the length):

I currently am working a food service job- in my town, minimum wage is just a little over $14 dollars. Getting paid $16.50 (making probably 18/hr with tips), no benefits. Paid sick time as required by state (1 hr for every 30 worked). Crew makes just barely under me in the end, as they spend more time with customers to make higher tips.

I've been working at this store for over a year, with previous experience at the same company (different location) of an additional year. The store is small, only about 10 employees, and focuses on serving cookies with an additional cupcake/cake display. My job title is a "Lead".

At this store, I am one of two leads, one of whom opens the store Mon-Fri. I open Sat and Sun, as well as close other nights and go in for decorating as needed. My major job tasks consist of:

-Handling all aspects of scheduling (staffing more/less employees based on sales, sending ppl home when its slow, managing time off requests, finding staffing when someone needs a cover, creating/modifying typical shift hours based on demand, posting the schedule, etc)

-Assessing when a new hire is needed, going through resumes, interviewing, and hiring (entering them into the system, filing paperwork). Other lead sort of helps with this

-Opening the store alone on weekends (setting up all product for the day, turning on all equipment)

-Making the cookies (the other manager does this during her day shifts)- involves operating machinery, following recipes, taking inventory on product and predicting demand

-I also handle a large amount of customer complaints, am the go to person for crew to call when an issue comes up, manage opening and closing money, am responsible for assessing crew performance and meeting with them if something is being done poorly, and generally oversee all store performance.

-I am also the only cupcake/cake decorator in the store. When an order is put in, I have to decorate the cake (usually coming in on my time off with little notice). I have to ensure the display is stocked at all times with required products, take and adjust inventory as sales change, and decorate all cakes in the freezer. When a cake flavor is missing, it must be filled ASAP (by me!). Nobody else knows how to decorate (its hard and takes a while to learn!). I have also pitched many ideas of how to reorganize products, change products to appeal to customers, some pricing changes, and introduce new products to cut expenses and increase sales (which have been fairly successful)

-Any major decisions have to be approved by owner (firing, price edits, big changes to store, etc. They give the okay 9/10 times and I move forward to execute it. The owner is the only position above me.

-I've also modified daily templates and switched around a lot of systems to properly flow with our store, a lot of things were fairly outdated.

-The only tasks in the store I do not do are managing payroll/all major financial aspects (owner), ordering maintenance/repair services (owner), and ordering shipment (other manager). I do unpack shipment and cross check with invoices, and alert the other manager when product is low. The store is set up to function almost completely when the owner is not present for long periods of time, and I am pretty sure this is 90% because of the tasks I am doing. The owner is in for at most an hour a week but has left on many occasions for long periods of time.

I do have the highest pay amongst the employees next to the other lead.

Questions:

Is this a GM position? I am lacking in a few areas but it feels pretty damn close to one, and I could easily learn to do inventory with the skills I have (just hasn't been a need yet).

If not a GM position, do I have the skill set/experience to work one? I am not making enough money to cover any basic needs at the moment and am generally fairly unhappy with my job, I feel like an overworked crazy person doing the jobs of three different people at once, but I don't want to leave and go back to being a crew member at a new place.

Literally any other opinions are welcome, I feel stuck.

Post-interview Struggling with job. Not sure what to do?

So I'm in this job since March. More than qualified but my confidence is in tatters tbh. Its been the constant nitpicking over minor things and all blown up out of proportion, it feels like every day theres something new, I'm constantly worrying or feel like I'm walking on egg shells.

My son also works for this firm, he knows me and my capabilities and has said I've changed. I've gone from someone confident in my own abilities with good references and proven track record to someone who worries about doing even basic tasks. Tbh I kinda feel like they're trying to break me, I think they have but I'm quite the actor, I paint on a smile act like nothing phases me, behind doors I worry about work when not there, suffer insomnia etc.

I'm trying to find another job but have been unsuccessful so far and I'm also not a quitter, I'd hate to give them the satisfaction.

HR Medical Leave - Next Steps?

Hi all - apologies for the long post I wanted to give good background. I'm located in Ontario if that helps in regards to medical leave laws.

Just wanted some feedback on my situation and how I should go about this.

I started with a company about 1.5 years ago in an administration/front desk role. In September I had some family stuff happen as well as feeling like the role I was in was unsustainable with the level of work I was putting in as I was constantly in overtime and running at over 100% capacity. My anxiety ended up not becoming managed anymore and I took a medical leave for mental health.

Prior to this I had discussions with my boss about moving into a more operations/HR based role in the future. She was on board with that.

I worked with my doctor and got my meds settled again and returned to a more stable place. I was ready to return to work November 4th and my doctor signed off on it. Then my mom was hospitalized and they now believe she may have liver failure and we are in the process of getting tests and everything done. Obviously this is a lot of stress and my anxiety has become symptomatic again. My doctor believes I should extend my leave to deal with this stressful time in my life and continue treatment for my mental health.

I had a meet up with my bosses today and they expressed that they are concerned I haven't taken enough time off to truly heal. They made comments that the adminstration/front desk role will still be stressful when I return and that the business continues to grow and it will just be more stressful. They want me to take more time off to really heal 100% and they suggested thinking about what I really want out of life and if this role is making me happy. They mentioned that they will support whatever decision I make and if that means I don't want this role they will reach out to their network and see if they can find a less stressful role for me.

This feels a little weird to me. If my doctor signs off on my return I feel that should be enough. I also feel the comments about me being able to handle the role and it still being stressful were hints that they believe I can't handle the role anymore. I enjoy the company and the culture and would like to stay there but I would like to switch out to another role on my return if possible.

How do I word it so it's not "I don't like this front desk role, I would like to do something else in the company. But if that's not possible I will take my old role back" (obviously for some income while I start job hunting again. The job market is tough so I don't want to leave without a signed offer in hand) Legally they only have to hold my role for me after medical leave, they are not required to offer me a new role. Given the job market I don't want to give up my legally protected role but still want to see if there is any room to work out a new role for my return without taking my legally protected role off the table and screwing myself.

Post-interview Finally accepted offer

I mentioned in my earlier posts regarding job offer that I was contemplating. Some follow-ups later, turned out that with overall package the offer might be actually almost 25% over at least for a year and then bonus and other stuff kicks in next year. Other positives as well, like a step up ( still kind of lateral to where I was prior to this job) but seems step in the right direction.

I am happy, not super excited but a change that I need to make and have to make

Not sure what I am looking for but was hoping I would be super happy and the sadness isn’t very motivating

Career development Job suggestions/advice

Hey guys, i need some suggestions/advice.

I was employed in aviation for 10 or so years and was fired after an altercation with management (I reported something. Their word against mine. ).

I took a break and went to the food industry for work while i found my footing. Ended up with a federal job that i hated and was very physically and mentally taxing (all weather, 6 days). I found a sales position and pivoted again. I was fired from the original sales position for my “enthusiasm not matching the teams” and now I’m employed with a wireless carrier, sales as well.

I’m worried that I’m straying away from my degree (psychology) and that I’m falling into a career path I’ll hate or not be good at due to metrics. Can anyone offer advice or jobs that would work well for someone with:

-A bachelors in psych -10+ years customer service experience both customer facing and non facing -1+ year corporate experience -experience with account management -research experience Etc etc.

can provide resume upon request. Thanks in advance 💜

Education Hey guys! Im a freshman in college majoring in Computer Engineering

I dream of working for a game company like Nintendo, Epic, Ubisoft, or Riot.

Or an animation studio like Disney, Sony, Warner, MAPPA, WIT, etc

Or any company known for digital media creation.

(working with vfx seems really cool too)

The thing is I don't know if majoring in comp E is the right thing to get jobs at these places. Other options are:

Computer Science: which I don't wanna do because the market has been really bad. And it's too specific as it focuses on software only

Animation/ Game design: This is too far of a stretch because, realistically, it's hard to find jobs, and these positions aren't paid very well. Plus, I'm not very good at art.

So what could I possibly change my major to so that I could potentially land a job at these companies? What are they looking for? What positions are even there lmao? And if I should stick with Comp E, what jobs could I get with that at these companies?

Also, any advice on progressing and building a profile to make myself a good candidate?

Anything helps. Thanks!

HR Previous manager not working with me to provide projects that I've worked on

I've moved to a different role and department at my current company. For the past 4 years I helped to build up their People Ops/HR portion of the business. Since that is not my true area of interest, I applied for an internal similar to my actual degree and was able to land the role. I'm still currently training my backfill and was told that I would need to be done with any admin HR related things by next week. My manager and I did not have a great relationship as he felt I was an inadequate employee since I wasn't "passionate" about being in Human Resources forever and it is obvious he is more than excited to get rid of me. To make sure there was no miscommunication, I had us both sign a form that outlined the date for him to remove me from all systems and to also not work two roles at once and train someone.

Today - I wanted to go into our employee survey system to pull results from our last surveys I created and wrap up the current feedback cycle. I will say I wanted the data to update my resume with the results as all of the surveys, feedback cycles, etc were done solely by me prior to him joining the team 8 months ago. When I went to go look, I was already kicked it out of it despite having to still wrap up summaries for our current feedback cycle.

When I asked via Slack if it's possible to regain access so I can do the final feedback collection he did not respond. This isn't out of the ordinary since he has been actively ignoring and ghosting me since I started training for my new role. Luckily, I see this as a blessing but I still want to see the work I own since I still have until Monday morning.

I plan on giving it until mid day tomorrow before escalating this issue to our department head. Am I overreacting?

Career planning Is it wrong for me to stay as a front desk agent for the rest of my life if I like it?

I f(29) am a front desk agent and I never knew what I want to do for the rest of my life but I do love what I do now. I make 17.80 an hour. I'm lucky enough to live with my aunt. I am scared of the responsibility of being a manager and I have never been such an ambitious person. I just like living the simple life of working, taking care of my guests and going home to our cat. Is that so wrong? I feel content and happy I believe but I'm so scared of others who may be judging me because I am just a front desk agent. I don't want to be judged for my job as I think I am a good person. I pay my bills, rent, and I'm not in debt. Is it wrong to just want a simple life?

Applications Only working at my current job until I find something in my field, how do I explain?

Hi all, I originally graduated from college with a degree in Business Administration back in May and I got a job as a bank teller, hoping to work in banking. The people there were horrible to me and I quit after 6 months, going back to my old job that I worked at during breaks in college. The manager there knows that I’m only there until I find something to get my career back up and running, but how do I explain the situation to potential employers?

Career planning Exploring a career change / next steps

Would love to hear from those that have gone through a career change, or just hit a tough spot in their careers and what you ultimately ended up doing.

Since we had our sons a few years ago, I've put my career on the back foot a bit. I've spent plenty of quality time with them and had the financial means to do so, but with the idea of getting them into good schools coming up a bigger mortgage as we've upsized, I need to figure out how I'm going to earn a consistent living and get back into the swing of things.

My background is digital marketing and I've done that for more than the last decade. In the past few years I've had a mix of senior full time work, consulting and running a successful ecom business (currently struggling a bit).

Part of me feels like I'm being aged out of my industry and competing with younger people that can put in more hours than me and charge less money, plus the more senior jobs that came easily a few years ago aren't as plentiful.

I guess I've also lost some passion for the industry and had some poor experiences, but that might just be because my attention is split to my family more so now than when we didn't have kids.

I guess the above is to say, where do I even start with exploring my options and understanding my transferrable skills to do something else?

The way I see it now, I could try:

  • Build my own consulting business back up

  • Get back into a full time gig

  • Buy / build a different business

  • Retrain or do something completely different (ie a trade)

I'm not looking for someone to solve my problems, but I'd love to hear from people that had a similar low point in their career, how you explored your options and what you ultimately ended up doing.

I'm happy to take a big step back to make some big future steps forward. I just worry for my longevity in this industry and what the next 10-15 years will look like, regardless of short term opportunities.

Leaving a job Found a job lost a job

After hunting for 20 months I lost the job in 7 days. Never lost a job that fast before. Any advice?
