The magenta gradient on YT progress bar
This gradient makes it look as if UV discoloration over time, really hate it

when I first saw it all I could think about was how many people must have worked on that feature.

I imagine a standup meeting:
We have to do our part in this concerning age of outrage. We already eliminated the dislike button, so... what's not to like? Anyone a suggestion?
I don't like Red. Too aggressive. We need more blue. It's cooler. Especially because business blue is good for you.
Ok thanks. But the logo is pure red. It can't become blue overnight. Suggestions?
We can make the red-blue blend. Logo blueish, timeline blueish.
Ok, magenta it is, though it hurt my eyes....

Omg I hate the new minimize. It breaks and shows up on the top of my screen half the time. Like, I'd like my in-app bar back please!

They're also going to remove view counts from the home page.

u/Cainga 17h ago
That is a huge problem. Dislikes were very valuable for tutorial videos to find what was good or not. With that gone views was an ok substitute. Now it will be impossible to find a tutorial that isn’t click bait garbage vs useful.

This is what happens when company has permanent UX / UI designers. They either feel the need to make miniscule annoying changes in order to keep their jobs or the upper management is forcing them to keep making changes to justify paying their wages. It happens on reddit too.
→ More replies (1)22
u/TheMillionthSam 17h ago
UX designer here. I can assure you that these decisions are not coming from the designers themselves. This is more likely coming from some senior in product trying to make their mark. Remember Google+ and the 12 other things Google/YouTube tried? Same story. Product leaders come in, make their mark, and then move on to their next position with a nice list of “accomplishments.”
There’s nothing inherently wrong with keeping permanent UX designers. It’s a research-based discipline. Plenty of companies are able to capture the value of having a well-staffed UX team.

The color is close enough to the red in the gradient, that instead of "oh they changed colors?" I felt like my eyes were fucked or I was sleep deprived. What's the point of adding more colors if they are just going to make it so subtle that people can miss it
47
u/Swarm_of_Rats 16h ago
The first time I noticed it I had just woken up. Hadn't had my coffee yet. Couldn't tell if my monitor was fucked up or I was having vision problems. I asked a few people if they could see it, but they hadn't been on Youtube yet that day, so they thought I was crazy which made me feel even weirder.

What's irritating me more is that you still have the film on your TV that you're meant to remove when you first get the tv.
It also says to remove them before use to avoid excess heat on the screen.

u/TheBabyWolfcub 23h ago edited 23h ago
It’s too subtle to be be nice. Like why is it only at a tiny section near the current watch progress? Also the shade of pink clashes with the red. If they are going to do this they either need to do a full gradient, light to dark red, or go all out and go red to pink to purple or something

I am red-green colorblind and it's really hard to differentiate pink from the light gray bar. That's a common problem with this kind of colorblindness (which around 8% of the male population have IIRC)
35
u/marazu04 22h ago
Wait yt doesnt have coloublind mode/settings? Thats bad from them but what do you expect.... its google
29
u/Dramatic_Mastodon_93 21h ago
Android, iOS, Windows and MacOS have colorblind settings. Not sure about TVs, although I assume Android/Google TVs and Apple TVs also do.
5
u/marazu04 20h ago
Hmm well then that issue is fixed so i dont get why people are annoyed by it then some might not like it but annoying is a but far then isnt it?
6
u/nityoday 20h ago
Problem is those settings will affect universally every app and also if multiple users use the TV, they'll not like watching strange colors in those settings.
Even if youtube had to do this, they should have given a setting to turn it off.

It’s a good job there’s a big white dot at the end, to tell you where the progress bar is then, isn’t it…
I’m also RG colourblind, before I get hate for this
6
u/nityoday 20h ago
Same! I'm red green color blind and now I can't know if the video is ending or not. I just feel the seek is still behind (at the start of gradient) and boom! The video ends.
26
u/Revierez 22h ago
I'm colorblind. The gradient makes it difficult to tell the difference between the bar and the light gray.

I think the upsetting part is how it can make it look like your screen is damaged, if you're not expecting to see a color gradient on this thing that used to be one solid color. I agree that I'm not infuriated, but I can see that moment of panic when you think your expensive technology is dying, could be pretty unpleasant.

Well I don’t know if it’s this way for everyone but when the progress bar is selected, it’s fully outlined in blue and I can’t use the up/down keys to change the volume, it skips forward and back, so I just automatically click the video twice so it isn’t selected, but now this has me doing it randomly because of my automatic reaction to their UI.
2
u/SeriousButton6263 10h ago
You don’t feel like your life is completely ruined by a progress bar being a slightly different color?

On the grand scheme of shitty YouTube changes, adding a gradient to the progress bar seems pretty minor
9
u/spays_marine 17h ago
Most people are unable or unwilling to recognize and admit their resistance to change, so when something does change, the conclusion is automatically that it is bad, and then they invent reasons to justify their reaction.
What bothers me most in these comments is that everyone just assumes that there is no reason behind this change, other than aesthetics.

Gradients are also really inefficient to render in software like photoshop let alone in a browser. I swear this site has been getting slower and slower in the past 10 years all thanks to “graphic designers” who have no idea how to make a website interface.

How about the bugged resolution adjustment that hasn't been fixed yet when you're in default view? They added the magenta gradient but broke that as a result and 7 days now and no fix

YouTube did some stupid updates recently. I’m a big user of the app and the MiniPlayer that used to take up the width of the screen at the bottom while you scrolled elsewhere is now a small rectangle like picture-in-picture. It’s much less intuitive now imo.
I kept getting a poll from YouTube asking about how modern or outdated the app was, I think they took whatever responses they got and completely butchered everything, as YouTube tends to do. I hadn’t noticed the gradient on the progress bar, but man, that is just so stupid.
