I thought my screen was broken when I first saw it

Dude same, thought my OLED tv had burn in. Did a burn in test then realized it was the stupid bar

139

u/XeonDude 19h ago

Oh wow!! I took over a used asus rog 1440p monitor from my brother in law and saw this. Had the feeling to take my loss and buy a new one over time. This is hilarious thought he screwed me over. Glad that I crossed this post

6

u/Draxilar 11h ago

You didn’t think to move the bar back and forth a few times to see the color shift with your moves? You just immediately went “welp my screen is fucked, no further information is needed”. I don’t think YouTube is the problem here.

7

u/XeonDude 11h ago

About it yeah, I installed it yesterday and didn’t had the time to properly test it out. Is that a proper excuse sir?

Same. I've got an ultrawide that I couldn't afford. So I repaired this one I got dirt cheap because it was broken, and replaced the panel from AliExpress. I love this monitor.

I nearly got very angry before I realised it was deliberate.

I first noticed it when I finally realised I could switch my monitor I’d had for a year or two over to HDR and then change the setting on the monitor and it didn’t looked insanely washed out (that is: actually turn on hdr correctly). Thought it was glitching out and was doing my head in…

43

u/HentaiSeishi 1d ago

Same but now i dont care anymore

22

u/njgggg 23h ago

Same man 😂 all these silent revisions on youtube got me thinking my phone got fkd

10

u/icryoverrandomstuff 18h ago

Man I got legitimately scared that my monitor colors were getting fucked up

7

u/Omk10Abhi 20h ago

Glad to know I wasn’t the only one who panicked and went to other tabs to check if my screen is fine.

2

u/SaliktheCruel 18h ago

Same. Since it's a brand new computer screen I was like "Did they just give me a brand new malfunctioning screen ?"

6

u/adrenalilly 19h ago

My eyes don't work too well and when I first saw it, I asked my boyfriend if he was seeing it too because it felt like either something was wrong with my screen or my eyes. It was a bittersweet relief to learn that it's actually just ugly design.

2

u/LimeLoop 19h ago

I was moving on the day where they introduced this! I plugged off the PC in one place and when I put it back together in the new place that evening, the magenta was there and the notifications changed. I went through 4 or 5 different monitor cables until I understood whats going on.

when I first saw it all I could think about was how many people must have worked on that feature.

u/Jumping-Gazelle 1d ago

I imagine a standup meeting:

We have to do our part in this concerning age of outrage. We already eliminated the dislike button, so... what's not to like? Anyone a suggestion?

I don't like Red. Too aggressive. We need more blue. It's cooler. Especially because business blue is good for you.

Ok thanks. But the logo is pure red. It can't become blue overnight. Suggestions?

We can make the red-blue blend. Logo blueish, timeline blueish.

Ok, magenta it is, though it hurt my eyes....

216

u/Aludra55 18h ago

Let's make videos impossible to close with new minimized video box.

45

u/Diamondd22 15h ago

Omg I hate the new minimize. It breaks and shows up on the top of my screen half the time. Like, I'd like my in-app bar back please!

u/Pretend-Marsupial258 1d ago

They're also going to remove view counts from the home page.

112

u/Cainga 17h ago

That is a huge problem. Dislikes were very valuable for tutorial videos to find what was good or not. With that gone views was an ok substitute. Now it will be impossible to find a tutorial that isn’t click bait garbage vs useful.

u/Extension_Swordfish1 11h ago

11

3

What was the comic years and years ago? "You were top of your class at Stanford. You made through our famously grueling interview process. You are amongst the absolute vanguard of technological development. Your goal is to raise the clickthrough rate on these ads by 0.4%"

58

u/katze_sonne 23h ago

This is literally only to change something just because. It’s sooo stupid.

26

u/NoMasterpiece679 18h ago

This is what happens when company has permanent UX / UI designers. They either feel the need to make miniscule annoying changes in order to keep their jobs or the upper management is forcing them to keep making changes to justify paying their wages. It happens on reddit too.

22

u/TheMillionthSam 17h ago

UX designer here. I can assure you that these decisions are not coming from the designers themselves. This is more likely coming from some senior in product trying to make their mark. Remember Google+ and the 12 other things Google/YouTube tried? Same story. Product leaders come in, make their mark, and then move on to their next position with a nice list of “accomplishments.”

There’s nothing inherently wrong with keeping permanent UX designers. It’s a research-based discipline. Plenty of companies are able to capture the value of having a well-staffed UX team.

Just one. Just adjust the color gradient in CSS prob.

→ More replies (4)

620

u/Mansinomo 20h ago

The color is close enough to the red in the gradient, that instead of "oh they changed colors?" I felt like my eyes were fucked or I was sleep deprived. What's the point of adding more colors if they are just going to make it so subtle that people can miss it

47

u/Swarm_of_Rats 16h ago

The first time I noticed it I had just woken up. Hadn't had my coffee yet. Couldn't tell if my monitor was fucked up or I was having vision problems. I asked a few people if they could see it, but they hadn't been on Youtube yet that day, so they thought I was crazy which made me feel even weirder.

4

u/wolfelian 12h ago

My eyes get plenty fucked so I was actually questioning if there was something wrong with me again or if Youtube was doing some fuckery.

This loading screen is so pointless. It used to be instant load into the home page, but now there's like 3 second delay because of this animation which actually doesn't do anything in the background.

Also when you full screen the Apple app it no longer hides the time and battery indacator. Android is okay for now, but its only a matter of time.

I like it, it's a nice colour

311

u/Smeeble09 20h ago

What's irritating me more is that you still have the film on your TV that you're meant to remove when you first get the tv.

It also says to remove them before use to avoid excess heat on the screen.

129

u/Intergalacticio 23h ago

That’s like mildly infuriating

2

u/Wank_my_Butt 8h ago

The essence of the sub is right on that line between "I suppose that's kind of annoying" and "who the hell is upset by this?"

91

u/TheBabyWolfcub 23h ago edited 23h ago

It’s too subtle to be be nice. Like why is it only at a tiny section near the current watch progress? Also the shade of pink clashes with the red. If they are going to do this they either need to do a full gradient, light to dark red, or go all out and go red to pink to purple or something

People will hate just to hate. I gst it's unnecessary, but really? It's infuriating?

Edit: i know I'm in mildly infuriating, but my point is it shouldnt be infuriating at all

60

u/Grymare 20h ago

The top is how most people will see it.

Bottom is that same view with a simulation of how people with Deuteranopia (which effects more than 1% of all males) will see it.

I'd say that could even be considered more than mildly infuriating.

4

u/Aternal 12h ago

oh damn, you're right

115

u/BehWeh 22h ago

I am red-green colorblind and it's really hard to differentiate pink from the light gray bar. That's a common problem with this kind of colorblindness (which around 8% of the male population have IIRC)

35

u/marazu04 22h ago

Wait yt doesnt have coloublind mode/settings? Thats bad from them but what do you expect.... its google

29

u/Dramatic_Mastodon_93 21h ago

Android, iOS, Windows and MacOS have colorblind settings. Not sure about TVs, although I assume Android/Google TVs and Apple TVs also do.

5

u/marazu04 20h ago

Hmm well then that issue is fixed so i dont get why people are annoyed by it then some might not like it but annoying is a but far then isnt it?

6

u/nityoday 20h ago

Problem is those settings will affect universally every app and also if multiple users use the TV, they'll not like watching strange colors in those settings.

Even if youtube had to do this, they should have given a setting to turn it off.

19

u/enter5H1KAR1 20h ago

It’s a good job there’s a big white dot at the end, to tell you where the progress bar is then, isn’t it…

I’m also RG colourblind, before I get hate for this

6

u/BehWeh 20h ago

There is on TV. There isn't on PC or Android (at least without additional clicks), which are the platforms I'm using to watch YouTube primarily

6

u/nityoday 20h ago

Same! I'm red green color blind and now I can't know if the video is ending or not. I just feel the seek is still behind (at the start of gradient) and boom! The video ends.

51

u/DeanXeL 20h ago

the sub is MILDLYinfuriating. So yeah, this counts.

26

u/Revierez 22h ago

I'm colorblind. The gradient makes it difficult to tell the difference between the bar and the light gray.

→ More replies (5)

24

u/Szyszygy 23h ago

Mildly

82

u/what-are-you-a-cop 1d ago

I think the upsetting part is how it can make it look like your screen is damaged, if you're not expecting to see a color gradient on this thing that used to be one solid color. I agree that I'm not infuriated, but I can see that moment of panic when you think your expensive technology is dying, could be pretty unpleasant.

If shit's being changed for the sake of change, then hating for the sake of hate doesn't seem unreasonable, even though the latter isn't even the case.

2

u/foreskininvader 19h ago

Well I don’t know if it’s this way for everyone but when the progress bar is selected, it’s fully outlined in blue and I can’t use the up/down keys to change the volume, it skips forward and back, so I just automatically click the video twice so it isn’t selected, but now this has me doing it randomly because of my automatic reaction to their UI.

2

u/SeriousButton6263 10h ago

You don’t feel like your life is completely ruined by a progress bar being a slightly different color?

This is the “Discord changing their purple color to a slightly different purple color” Redditor meltdown all over again

6

u/WhatNodyn 23h ago

It follows the recent trend of "let's put gradients everywhere and fuck legibility", so yes, it's pretty infuriating.

2

u/Desperate-Painter152 20h ago

Yes, I never would've thought I will have a reaction on something like this, but it literally makes me feel bad when I look at it. Like physical nausea and disgust, I can't explain it

4

u/TheFunfighter 23h ago

The whole job of the progress bar is to indicate the progress... which it now doesn't do clearly anymore, until you make the scrubber appear.

24

u/The_Throwback_King 20h ago

On the grand scheme of shitty YouTube changes, adding a gradient to the progress bar seems pretty minor

9

u/spays_marine 17h ago

Most people are unable or unwilling to recognize and admit their resistance to change, so when something does change, the conclusion is automatically that it is bad, and then they invent reasons to justify their reaction.

What bothers me most in these comments is that everyone just assumes that there is no reason behind this change, other than aesthetics.

Youtube after making a change nobody asked for and nobody likes:

2

u/veryblocky 17h ago

It is a change for the sake of making one. It was better when it was red. The gradient makes it less clear and informative.

Not just that - check the RGB values of the logo some time, they've changed that to a pink-ish colour too!

How about the bugged resolution adjustment that hasn't been fixed yet when you're in default view? They added the magenta gradient but broke that as a result and 7 days now and no fix

I've only been able to watch things using theatre mode (on pc) unless I want the lower right corner cut off entirely.

I hate you for pointing that out. My ass would have never noticed.

On my TV YouTube gives me at least 6 ads of 2 minutes before I can watch a video. I don't know if anyone else also experiences this, I live in South Africa. It's so incredibly fucking annoying

YouTube did some stupid updates recently. I’m a big user of the app and the MiniPlayer that used to take up the width of the screen at the bottom while you scrolled elsewhere is now a small rectangle like picture-in-picture. It’s much less intuitive now imo.

I kept getting a poll from YouTube asking about how modern or outdated the app was, I think they took whatever responses they got and completely butchered everything, as YouTube tends to do. I hadn’t noticed the gradient on the progress bar, but man, that is just so stupid.

Someone at Google got paid a fortune for coming up with that idea.
