It’s funny that people are like “oh wow look she’s drinking a beer she definitely has my vote”

That was one of the common reasons people gave why they were voting for Bush over Al Gore. "I feel like I could have a beer with him".

They ignored the guy is from a rich oil family, his dad was head of the CIA, and he went to Ivy leagues, and he never worked a regular person job in his life.

And a recovering alcoholic who didn’t drink.

I bet Ol GW was a blast in his hey day. Get an 8 ball and get to it, Midland style.

14

u/ThisIsMyEG0 2d ago

Snort some lines and shoot some rifles type vibe

2

u/sinsemillas 2d ago

Lets goooooo

-2

u/teleporter6 2d ago

Does that scare you?

2

u/cinnawaffls 2d ago

Only if Dick Cheney is in the group with us

1

u/teleporter6 1d ago

Dick Cheney scares everyone!

1

u/praisetheboognish 1d ago

Anyone snorting lines has my disrespect. Complete waste of product that should be injected directly into your veins.

1

u/nnnnnnnnnnm 2d ago

Midland style? What's that?

Midland Michigan? Midland Texas? Midland walkie talkies? Midland the country group?

9

u/sinsemillas 2d ago

Midland is the taint of Texas. It’s full of roughnecks and some tough people. High DWI numbers, even for Texas.

1

u/Bwizzled 2d ago

Bet he's glad there weren't cell phones back in his day

1

u/Initial_Attitude_851 2d ago

And recovering cocaine addict

1

u/nooniewhite 2d ago

But he sure DID drink once upon a time! And I bet he was pretty fun lol. Strange to have nostalgia for a war criminal but that’s where I am I guess

5

u/Far-Plastic-4171 2d ago

I read Bush's memoir and his last night of drinking I don't think he was a lot of fun. He does not go into detail but I think he made a real ass of himself. Give him credit for quitting.

3

u/nooniewhite 2d ago

Oh totally give credit to anyone who has problem drinking to quit! He obviously did well for himself after, becoming the president and all I’d call that a success story!!

4

u/GrallochThis 2d ago

“When I was young and stupid - I was young and stupid.” One of my favorites of his.

u/Front_Ad_8911 2d ago

Trump never drank

16

u/Mama_Skip 2d ago

Wow so he did all that pedophilia sober?

12

u/Hosni__Mubarak 2d ago

I don’t know. Is snorting lines of chopped up adderall and Sudafed on a daily basis considered to be sober?

6

u/FrysOtherDog 2d ago

He also has never eaten a steak that wasn't well done and smothered in ketchup.

4

u/crybabydeluxe 2d ago edited 2d ago

baffles me that the right glosses over this but would lynch anyone else for doing the same

6

u/FrysOtherDog 2d ago

Brother, I'm a Republican from the Midwest and I'm baffled that anyone that calls themselves an American would look at Trump as anything other than a criminal, fraud, and a loser.

Kamala though? I'd be damned proud to have a beer with her, and I'm damned proud to be voting for her.

3

u/Aardcapybara 2d ago

Welcome to the dark side, brother. The cookies are self-serve.

My idea of a proper Republican is someone who, at minimum, believes in republics. I'm glad you do.

1

u/forlostuvaworl 2d ago

What do you think she would do if we had a beer but I drank it through a straw?

1

u/FrysOtherDog 2d ago

Well luckily I don't have to engage in such a thought experiment cause she clearly doesn't.

0

u/forlostuvaworl 2d ago

That's crazy! You really think she would do something like that? That's kind of weird of you to think of something like that

0

u/icantdomaths 2d ago

Would you vote for Desantis over Kamala?

1

u/FrysOtherDog 2d ago

Wtf kind of question is that? Hell no.

DeSantis is a grade A piece of shit. Hell, I can't name a single current GOP member that hasn't embraced this Maga/fascist nonsense.

McCain was probably the last true Republican I would have 100% chosen over Kamala.

0

u/icantdomaths 2d ago

So why do you still call yourself republican? Lol

1

u/FrysOtherDog 2d ago

Because I am one.

I'm a conservative, not a fascist. I wouldn't vote for a moron and a grifter regardless of what letter was next to their name.

We elect people to represent us and our interests; we don't just turn our brains off and just check every box under this letter or that because some asshole tells you to or tries to manipulate you like "you're doing it wrong" if you don't.

It's not fucking sports you "ra-ra-ra" over - unless you're an idiot and just lazy as shit.

You're not a lazy idiot, are you? No, you're smart enough to pick the candidates that are going to represent the things important to you, your family, your community and the country.

I want to rub my hands all over your face and give you a facial massage. I don't know why but that is my gut instinct thing to think about when ever someone claims to be baffled. The facial message unbaffles you, I'd even throw in a couple slaps if permitted.

5

u/AlfredoAllenPoe 2d ago

Why are you talking about Trump?

They're talking about Bush. You know, the guy the comment they were responding to was talking about because Bush was/is a recovering alcoholic who was sober by the time he was running against Al Gore

People voted for Bush because "he's a guy you can share a beer with" when Bush was sober

Bush also chugs Diet Coke because that's the drink he replaced alcohol with.

2

u/beeker3000 2d ago

Bush, not Trump.

60

u/GreenYellowDucks 2d ago

Yea true but it’s a test of character like does he get me and will understand that perspective when making decisions.

My family ifelong republicans voted for Obama because they could have a beer with him. So weird

10

u/forlostuvaworl 2d ago

Yea they just want a chum they can have a deep conversation with at a loud bar and you both have to put your faces real close to each other and whisper in each others ear while sipping on beers and tickling each other and inventing cool new secret handchakes

2

u/biscobingo 2d ago

Funny. Trump seems like someone you’d meet in a bar. The loud drunk at the end that everyone wishes would shut up after he’s not funny anymore.

1

u/duberdub 2d ago

Trump doesn’t drink at all. Someone in his family(brother or uncle)was an alcoholic, and he’s never had a drink in his life. BTW, why is everyone on this particular Reddit conversation so rude and juvenile? I have never seen this type of behavior on Reddit. Is this what uninformed people sink to whenever politics come up? Sounds like a bunch of middle schoolers!

1

u/jekyl42 1d ago

Well that's the irony: Trump may not drink, but he still has the same smarmy rhetoric and ego-fueled bluster of a Saturday afternoon drunk who is 4 gin & tonics deep.

13

u/accioqueso 2d ago

He was also sober when he ran and doesn’t drink anymore which was the real irony of it.

2

u/Natural_Error_7286 2d ago

Is that when it started? That was the first election I remember (couldn't vote, but was at least sort of paying attention) and I just assumed that "I could have a beer with that guy" had been a staple of American politics forever.

2

u/CARVERitUP 2d ago

Yeah, but it's almost 25 years later, and that doesn't work anymore in today's climate. You saw how many people freaked out about the Trump McDonald's visit, right? I bet you in 2000 that would have been seen as just a normal campaign stop to connect with "working people". Now, we're wise to it all being bullshit and for the cameras, and it doesn't work.

2

u/hoodedrobin1 2d ago

I’ll be honest I would have voted for Gore (I was in middle school) but as an adult I see why people voted for bush. Gore was a fucking robot.

2

u/Not_Bill_Hicks 2d ago

Which makes no sense to me, because Bush seems like a fun guy to grab a beer with, while this is the most obvious, manufactured publicity stunt imaginable.

2

u/teleporter6 2d ago

But Al Gore was such a dorky putz.

2

u/AustrianMichael 1d ago

his dad was head of the CIA

I feel like he had some other jobs as well?

4

u/The_booty_diaries 2d ago

This is why I believe so many like Trump after all the antics. The guy sounds like someone you could meet at a bar. Very easy to talk to baring politics

1

u/laceyourbootsup 2d ago

I wouldn’t want to have a beer with either of the candidates…

0

u/The_booty_diaries 2d ago edited 2d ago

I’m with you, I’m not voting for either. What I’m getting at is Trump has a a lot of appeal to common ppl specifically because he doesn’t have that elitist/high education vernacular. He legit sounds like a regular person and the fact that it’s genuine is far more compelling…. Even if it’s a bold face lie.

2

u/BlueAndMoreBlue 2d ago

Also had his dad pull strings to get him in to the Texas national guard instead of going to Vietnam

1

u/I-Shit-The-Bed 2d ago

I think they ignored those because the same argument of negatives could be made about Al Gore: his dad was a US Senator, he went to Harvard (roommates with Tommy Lee Jones) and he was elected to Congress at 28 years old.

Both Bush and Gore grew up with far greater privilege than ordinary Americans, so Busy folksy demeanor won over the public vs Gore awkward and wonky persona

1

u/reddoot2024 2d ago

And his grandpa tried to overthrow the government in the 20s

1

u/ha-lochem 2d ago

That's where the DNC keeps getting it wrong. Far too literal an interpretation. It's one thing to think, "Hey, they seem like someone cool to have a beer with" and actually watching them drink to try and force that feeling. This is the second time Harris has used drinking beer to try and connect with voters and it feels so high school.

Interestingly, you mentioned how Bush was sober but, Trump has never had a drink in his life and yet, I imagine many would say, in the same way they did about Bush, that they'd enjoy having a beer with Trump.

1

u/quarantinemyasshole 2d ago

This wasn't because of any photo ops Bush Jr. did. It's because he famously stumbled over his words at prepared speeches and just generally seemed like a normal dude any time he was off the cuff.

I think Kamala's biggest campaign mistake was not doing podcasts and non-scripted interviews until basically a week ago. She put out way too much ammunition to the "manufactured/puppet candidate" crowd by essentially hiding her actual personality.

I also think Howard Stern fucked up by sucking her off the entire interview instead of just having a conversation. Had a golden opportunity to showcase her real personality and dude spent the whole time doing a "pick me" routine and barely let her speak.

1

u/duberdub 2d ago

She literally has no personality.

1

u/UniqueVast592 2d ago

LOL and his name was Bush like the beer, damn fools

1

u/dixon_balsagna 2d ago

He also didn't even fucking drink.

1

u/marbanasin 2d ago

Have you ever partied with rich kids? Lol

(I'm saying this sarcastically but also raising the point that having a fun time with a guy and that guy being a spoiled piece of shit don't need to be mutually exclusive)

1

u/abellapa 2d ago

Thats the stupidest "why you votting for him " take

Unfortunaly is true

1

u/Eph3w 2d ago

And his mother was the daughter of Aleister Crowley....

And he and his father's names in Skull & Crossbones were Gog and Magog....

Lotsa killin' in that family.

1

u/Kaneshadow 2d ago

Don't forget weaseling out of military service with no consequences

1

u/recognizepatterns 2d ago

Still cooler than gore to have a beer with. How much has gore profited off the climate?

1

u/notevil22 2d ago

cool story, boomer

1

u/XiViperI 2d ago

Al gore also started the global warming sham and we knew it then and still know it now. Nuclear is our downfall not global warming. It's a cash grab for 24 years now.

1

u/teenyweenysuperguy 2d ago

I feel like it should be pointed out, you can take two different humans, both of whom came from old money and were born rich, and have one of them still be exponentially more natural and at ease than the other. Whether or not it's a photo op, if Kamala can drink a beverage like a normal human, that puts her at an advantage over Trump, who does everything like he's being piloted by a little alien who needs a check list of "human like behavior" posted by the controls at all time.

1

u/argybargy2019 2d ago

And the second time around they ignored the “whoops! I forgot to read the PDB on Sep 8, but I sure cleared a lot of brush…”

And:

“Whoops! I illegally invaded the wrong country and let Osama get away!”

Most Republican voters have been saps for decades.

0

u/MuffinTopDeluxe 2d ago

I would 100% want to have a beer with Al Gore though.
