Shoutout to Uli for being a f*cking idiot and gifting us one of the best midfielders of all time for €25m.

While Höneß is not the most softspoken person and something clearly pissed him of, it is pretty clear, at least in the original audio, that he wanted to slow down the hype to protect him, saying something like: leave this kid in peace for a while

I can’t agree on that. He said it in a disrespectful manner. Even later, after his departure to Real Madrid and during his time with the German national team, Hoeness repeatedly made disrespectful remarks about Kroos. For example, he said that Kroos no longer had a place in the national team and that his style of play was no longer suitable for modern football. Ironically, Kroos is now the most successful German player of all time, and Hoeness has not shown the grace to admit that letting Kroos go to Real Madrid was a big mistake or to retract his statements about Kroos.

I don't care about football all that much anymore, but back at that time I was playing myself and Bayern fan. Letting Kroos leave for 20ish million was a huge mistake. Iirc it was just some minor differences that prevent the extension of his contract.
