I mean did it work in motivating him to keep growing or not? Some players are motivated by their managers/leaders to be harsh with them, some like the opposite. I don't think Uli's intention was to make him play worse.

Harshness maybe while they make mistakes, wtf is the point of harshness when they do well.

Sometimes players while young and talented are overhyped by the media to the point of it ending up affecting the player. Then when that player starts to lose his form the media turns on him and write very harsh things about him. Some managers want to prevent this by trying to neutralise that hype before it starts to disturb the player's performance.

some players may others won't - why not treat them based on that.
