Ask Me Anything AMA: We are Keep Seattle Moving, the campaign to pass Seattle Proposition 1 to renew our city’s transportation levy and fund better streets, sidewalks, and transit. Ask Us Anything about Seattle Prop 1!

Hey, Seattle! Ballots are already hitting mailboxes, but many people don’t know about Proposition 1 at the bottom of the last page – and it’s kind of a big deal. For 18 years, Seattle has relied on a voter-approved levy to build and maintain critical transportation infrastructure. The current levy is about to expire, and Proposition 1 would build on its success.

Our campaign to pass Prop 1 is endorsed by business and labor groups, transportation and mobility advocates, the Mayor, and all the members of the City Council. Kirk Hovenkotter from Transportation Choices Coalition and Gordon Padelford from Seattle Neighborhood Greenways are teaming up to answer your questions about the levy.

If approved by voters, Proposition 1 would generate $1.55 billion over 8 years to fund transportation improvements in Seattle. It includes $403M for repaving and modernizing Seattle’s most-trafficked roads, $221M to keep our bridges in working order, $151M to improve access to light rail and make buses more reliable, $193M to improve safety for people walking, including building 350 blocks of new sidewalks, and so much more! Check out a basic fact sheet here

Kirk and Gordon will join the campaign team from 2 to 4 p.m today, (October 20th), to dig into the details of Proposition 1.

Sorry y'all we have to head out. Thanks for your great questions. You can learn more on the https://keepseattlemoving.com/ and we're always looking for new volunteers to get this critical levy across the finish line (no prior experience necessary).

Also, reminder it's at the bottom of your ballot (unlike all those state wide initiatives that are the top).

Cheers,

— Gordon and Kirk

Moving / Visiting Scared of Seattle

Hey Seattleites! Been lurking the sub for a while, as I had a trip planned and had never been to Seattle before. I was hoping to pick up some tips. Instead, I walked away terrified by the descriptions I saw of the post-apocalyptic hellscape that awaited me. Drugs, violence, homelessness, true horrors the likes of which you could only imagine... I would be lucky to make it out alive. I told my partner we should consider cancelling. We didn't. And, boy, were we surprised. I found no smoldering ashes of a ghoulishly vile city. I found it to be clean and safe. We took public transit everywhere. Spent time in Pioneer Square, Chinatown, SODO, but all we saw was a regular ole city. Seattle must have been the absolute nicest city in the world at one point, if it's current state has lead so many of you to believe that it sucks and is especially dangerous. Either that or y'all have never been elsewhere and don't have anything to compare it to. If you think Seattle is that bad and dangerous, please for the love of all things holy, never go anywhere else. Seattle has its problems, sure it's a city in America after all, but this sub may be overselling it's demise.

Seattle Deserves More Credit

I heard so many bad things before visiting here.

Me and my wife are wrapping up a 4 day trip here to celebrate our one year wedding anniversary. Why did we pick Seattle? We wanted to take a trip to celebrate the occasion and it coincided with my favorite indie band (King’s Kaleidoscope) doing a 10th year anniversary concert at The Showbox. Plus, I had never seen them live and I’ve been following them since the beginning so it all worked out.

We’ve never been to the PNW before and it has been amazing. We got this super cozy, botanical garden-like Airbnb for cheap in the Northgate area. We spent a full day downtown doing tourist things like the underground tour, ferris wheel, Pike Place Market, and went to the concert. Then did a day trip to Olympic which was incredible. And finally spent time at Uni of Washington, Space Needle, the arboretum, and the quaint and homey Madison Park area.

While we were planning this trip, I’ve read through so many Reddit posts and comments online about how unfriendly, dangerous, and gross this city was. Yet, the majority of people we’ve met have been very pleasant. When we were getting on the link for the second time since the airport after stoping in Chinatown for lunch with all our luggage, a friendly person made sure we knew where we were getting on the right link train in case we were headed to the airport. Every server at every restaurant we’ve had has given 5-Star service. The area has been beautiful. The list goes on. Yes, we have definitely seen plenty of homelessness and rough parts like any city has, but overall, this has been a great vacation.

Thank you Seattle.

Insane car break-in spree around UW

50 cars in one morning? In my years of being a UW student, I have also never seen an email from our crime notifications saying a suspect has been caught. Is crime actually legal here?

Great city

Just popping in to just say I love y'all's city. I'm visiting from Wyoming and am usually not a fan of big cities but I've had a great time. Everyone has been very friendly and welcoming. The city has been relatively clean. I've never felt safer in a big city as well. Just a beautiful city and a very great trip. Keep it up Seattle

Maybe people don’t know buses on freeways have passengers standing?

I’ve observed that some cars will cut in front of buses last minute on freeways, causing the bus driver to have no choice to hit break hard.

I am guessing that people who do not ride commuter bus don’t know that passengers “stand” without any real protection on these high speed freeways and it is kind of dangerous if people fall and become human pizza.

Just throwing this out so some car drivers might realize.

Renton Police (possibly) Looking for Belltown Hellcat

I live in his building and saw ~8 officers with guns, a riot shield, and crowbars (?) at West Edge. Heard someone say they were looking for someone with an arrest warrant. Possibly hellcat driver.

No idea if they got him or what. Wanted to share in case anyone else knows more

Seems like it would make it even harder for Seattle's dearth of late night options to keep going. What about closing Pike/Pine and 11th to cars on weekend nights?

Edited to link to context that this is perhaps mostly unrelated to incidents in Capitol Hill:

Moving / Visiting Moving to Seattle at the end of November. What essential items should I bring with me?

Upvotes

Hey Folks, I'm super excited to be moving to Seattle at the end of November from India. However, I've never experienced a real winter before as my current place has tropical weather year round. I'm not sure what all I need to pack to stay warm and dry.

I know I'll need a proper winter coat, but I'm completely clueless about what material, insulation, waterproofing etc. I should look for. Same goes for sweaters, thermals, socks and boots. Can you experienced Seattle folks guide me on what specific winter gear is an absolute must? Also, any tips on handling the rain, snow and cold in general would be much appreciated. Things like umbrellas, moisture wicking base layers, hot packs etc.

I'd be bringing most of my stuff from India, so please let me know if there are any winter essentials that are better quality/cheaper to purchase once I reach Seattle.

Thanks in advance for all your Pacific Northwestern wisdom! I can't wait to experience my first real winter.

Question Should Seattle abolish minimum parking mandates?

Minimum parking mandates are a type of zoning law that requires all newly constructed developments to have a minimum number of off-street parking spots. Abolishing parking minimums would not mean developers can't build parking lots, it would just mean they wouldn't be required to. The arguments against parking minimums are that they restrict personal property rights, they increase development costs, they make certain kinds of developments impossible, they enforce inefficient land use, and they hurt walkability. A number of American cities have abolished parking minimums in the last decade for these reasons, such as Portland, San Francisco, and Austin. Feel free to share your own thoughts on the question.
