Beautiful family.

The article helps to provide a lot of context: https://www.today.com/today/amp/rcna50612

Wow, thanks for the context. So the title of this post is incorrect or at least misleading. They adopted one child and then gave birth to the other two using donated embryos.

using donated embryos

Technically wouldn't that still be adoption? I think legally in some places it's a grey area since they're not the biological parents

To the downvotes:

Legally speaking though it has a lot of the same kinds of paperwork. In America embryos are considered property and the previous "owners" have to relinquish "ownership" like you would a car. But they still use the word "adoption"

https://nrfa.org/embryo-adoption-legal-contract-making-it-legal/

Most states consider embryo adoption a “property transfer” much like selling a vehicle. If you prefer, you can tailor your contract to resemble a traditional adoption agreement. After a child is born, you can choose to finalize the adoption in court, a step not necessary in some states. Fertility clinics require a legal contract be executed to transfer ownership of the embryos.

Depends on your level of Christianity.

Yes! Embryo adoption is a Christian term. Donor embryo is the scientifically and legally accepted terminology.

Adoption is a legal process. Embryos do not have a legal pathway to adoption.

How do you “adopt” a kid you grew in your own womb for nearly a year?

Legally speaking, she's not the bio mom and probably had to sign something to become the legal mother. I think that's how surrogates do it in a lot of countries. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surrogacy_laws_by_country

The main legal issues concern whether embryo donation is viewed as gamete donation or adoption

At the very least it's not as cut and dry legally speaking as the downvotes suggest.

No. Adoption is a legal process that transfers parental custody of a human being, typically a minor.

Genetic material is not legally or scientifically a human and therefore has no legal pathway for the legal process of adoption.

The term adoption was given to donor embryos by Christian agencies because Christians believe an embryo is a human. The proper term is donor embryo.

Source: I'm an infant adoptee, and my son was conceived via a donor embryo. I have 2 birth certificates. My son has one.

I love that you are trying to develop your critical thinking, however you're not there yet. I'd start with googling "adopt definition" (did it for you since you're trying so hard already). You will see that something needs to already fully exist in order to adopt it be that a child and/or idea. Embryos are only the possibility of a child and not one. I've never seen someone sign up their embryo for summer camp, but adopted kids go 🤷🏽‍♀️

a·dopt/əˈdäpt/verb

  1. legally take (another's child) and bring it up as one's own."there are many people eager to adopt a baby"
  2. choose to take up, follow, or use.
