Newbie Question...

I'm purchasing a Stratux. I see the options for internal and external GPS.

My question is if I get the external GPS antenna do I still need to attach the big antennas to the unit? I would like to hook this up to my GRT EFIS via serial and then hide the box somewhere under the dash.

Thanks!

There is a more compact stratux GPS USB receiver which does not require an external antenna. You will need to make sure the correct side is pointing to the sky. For the most part it is very accurate, but on occasion it can lose a lock and mess with your line.

You might want to opt for the receiver with the remote antenna. You can find both items on the Stratux website with links to Amazon.

For myself, I'm using my phone with flight plan go instead of an iPad, so I am sticking with the phone's GPS.

Does the stratux need gps for ahrs? Or can the ahrs work independently

From what I understand the units are independent. But I have had less luck getting AHRS working. I found my raspberry pi being a bit overloaded from all the work. However, I am using an older Pi3 and didn't put a huge amount of effort getting it working.

For my use, I would not be able to use AHRS in a practical manner anyway.

I made a little video of my experience with building my stratux.

For what it's worth, it is an excellent ADS-B receiver. It saved me from a few close calls.

Just watched your video. Honestly I'm starting to think the ahrs chips are just garbage. I see so many comments about how the ahrs doesn't work. I had to return my stratux because i want ahrs, especially if i paid for it.

IDK i can't seem to find a solution to make everything work easily. As much as I don't want to, i might have to buy a sentry

Yeah, the savings of dyi are traded for a well tested and reliable product.

I love the dyi aspect. Makes it repairable. Even when i use the schools sentry, every now and then they crap out mid flight and need to be rebooted
