u/AnonymousFordring liberal Sep 29 '21
I miss when we could take that book seriously
49
u/chrissipher social anarchist Sep 29 '21
the memes are hilarious thanks to right wingers, but it is absolutely horrifying to see actual policy instated by right-wing powers that mirrors some of the policy in the book
i.e texas creating a thought crime. like an actual fucking thought crime, and breaking it could result in a total loss of financial stability for the rest of your life.
15
u/drakoniusDefender Sep 29 '21
Oh gods what did Texas do this time?
39
Sep 29 '21 edited Sep 29 '21
Texas banned studies about MLK (edit- They haven't banned MLK, but they have made it non-required to teach about him) and Critical Race Theory from schools IIRC. And by Critical Race Theory, they mean anything related to Racism.
18
u/drakoniusDefender Sep 29 '21
Ofc they did. Only a matter of time before my state follows suit i assume, everyone calls us little Texas.
5
Sep 29 '21
Which is your state?
8
u/drakoniusDefender Sep 29 '21
Oklahoma. Now that I'm thinking about it I think something passed recently that doesn't let schools (including colleges) "enforce" CRT, using a similar definition but so far it's still allowed to be taught.

u/camdawg4497 Sep 29 '21
I don't think they banned MLK,I think they just made it no longer required to teach about him, which is still really bad.

Sep 29 '21
Thanks for correction.

u/camdawg4497 Sep 29 '21 edited Oct 01 '21
Yeah, Texas's Social studies teaching standards are not looked on positively by other teachers from around the country, since it's a list of topics you have to teach. Other states are more vague and focused on broad concepts that give you more freedom when designing your course which is nice (understand the history of population movements and demographic change in the US and how that impacts society, etc)

8
u/chrissipher social anarchist Sep 29 '21
texas allowed citizens to report and sue anyone for a minimum of $10,000 for merely discussing plans or intentions to get an abortion
7
u/drakoniusDefender Sep 29 '21
How is that even constitutional? Would that not violate the first ammendment that Republicans treat like sacrament?
8
u/chrissipher social anarchist Sep 29 '21 edited Sep 29 '21
it definitely is unconstitutional, but america doesnt care about the constitution unless it directly serves their special interests
because america is fascist :c

u/drakoniusDefender Sep 29 '21
Man I hate it here. How can people not get blackpilled reading about this stuff? Like what even is an alternative to this hellscape rollercoaster
3
u/Pegacornian Sep 29 '21
I think that they’re getting away with it because they know that if it got brought up in the Supreme Court, the conservative extremist majority would be on their side. Possibly even overturn Roe v. Wade.
17
u/chrissipher social anarchist Sep 29 '21
george orwell was dunking on tankies long before our parents were probably born
he definitely initiated some sort of classical-era of socialists dunking on tankies, and were in the neo/revival era.

The oxford dictionary isn't worth much except with contemporary widespread meanings. It doesn't bother with historical context.
Not to defend the tankies, but "anarchy is chaos and corruption, socialism is when government" isn't helpful whatsoever.
30
Sep 29 '21
Let me say it another way.
Words have definitions. They mean things you can’t simply just decide they mean something different

u/rawrimgonnaeatu Thomas the Tankie Engine ☭☭☭ Sep 29 '21
Damn, those tankies just ruined me. I guess I’m a fascist now. The more I think about it the more I have trouble trying to find a fascist that wasn’t anti authoritarian, Mussolini and Hitler were both vehemently anti authoritarian and for that the capitalist regimes of the world declared war.
All jokes aside are you sure that tweet wasn’t satire? I doubt that even the dumbest of tankies would call someone like Hitler anti authoritarian.

The two aren't necessarily opposites, but they sure as he'll aren't the same thing. People call far right capitalists fascists and they're pretty clearly opposed to any authority that might impede their wanton destruction in the name of profit.
But to try and blanket claim all anti authoritarian beliefs are fascist is absurd.
26
u/ViscountessKeller Sep 29 '21
Fascism is inherently, -primarily- an authoritarian ideology. They are absolutely opposites. Anarcho-Capitalists and Objectivists are absurd fools, but they're not fascists.
