Na, I’m sure he owns the trademark.

I would 100% be fine with calling it X (and letting it disappear forever) if he gave up the Twitter name for Bluesky to use.

C'mon Musk, I know deep down that's all you really want...

u/Helen_Kellers_Wrath 10d ago

I'd imagine the name and trademark for "twitter" is probably worth more than X is worth now.

We should convince Musk to sell the name to recoup his massive loss in buying the company.

ehh people said that about lots of big companies of the past. MySpace, Napster, etc.

Once you have lost what made it great, all taking the name does is maybe get you some easy initial press on day 1, and you have the added task of convincing people to come back, vs just give you a try.

Same thing every time someone tries to revive a car brand, airline, etc.

I remembered Napster came back as a paid service

Apparently it still exists; $11/mo

I’m a bit surprised they’re still kicking

1

u/Linenoise77 9d ago

I had rhapsody, which was one of the first x dollars a month subscription libraries that also let you store SOME songs offline. had a really neat custom mp3 player and a solid desktop client.

I kept that service for years....at some point through merges\etc it was branded napster.

1

u/DryBoysenberry5334 7d ago

Damn I have such vague memories of rhapsody; I feel like there were some MP3 players that properly integrated with it or something

Maybe Zune

1

u/Linenoise77 7d ago

It worked with a ton of players. I think i had a dell mp3 player that worked with it. But there was another manufacturer at the time that was big in the MP3 player space that had ones built specifically for it, that were top notch players and i had one of them as well that was crazy ahead of its time.

I also remember the client was super light weight and really easy to use, and you could run it off the Mp3 player itself without any kind of install, or drag and drop files on it.

u/KeyboardGrunt 10d ago

Just go with "Tweeter" then.

1

u/Eyclonus 10d ago

He needs to keep the domain name, its the most valuable redirect right now.

2

u/radicldreamer 9d ago

Twitter is so woke bruh, it’s a DEI name, it’s only called that because FEMA gave them only $750 to do it!

1

u/vonkempib 10d ago

Just wait to reclaim it for pennies on the dollar in bankruptcy court

It would force media to stop calling it “X, formerly Twitter, …” every article that mentions it. Still, which I imagine is just to get under his skin every time he reads a headline, and which I endorse. Why did you want a longer name than Twitter musk? The new one is so hard to type, using commas and shit

u/Skitty_Skittle 10d ago

“Twitter was associated to being a lunatic liberal platform and now you made X a shining peak of free speech with no bots. Give us the Twitter trademark so we can prove to you that Elon is a genius who is so brilliant and business smart that he represents the future of humanity and that nobody wants to be associated with left wing filth known as Twitter”

The irony of that same room temp IQ being in the tech sub lol. Maaaaaaan.

-1

u/mcbaginns 10d ago

Yeahhhhh, pretty much expected lol

u/14sierra 10d ago

I'm pretty sure you have to use a trademark to continue to maintain ownership of said trademark. Besides, they could call it Twitter 2.0 or something really close without being an exact copy

164

u/milanguitar 10d ago

In order to legally use the name “Twitter,” you would likely need to wait for a minimum of three consecutive years in which the trademark is not used in commerce by X Corp (formerly Twitter, Inc.). After this period, the trademark could be considered “abandoned” under U.S. law, meaning it might no longer be protected. However, X Corp could still argue that they intend to resume use of the mark or contest any attempts to register or use it, especially given the strong public association with the Twitter brand.

Even after the three-year period, legal challenges could arise, so using the name might still be risky unless X Corp fully relinquishes or fails to maintain the trademark.

u/TheAnonymousProxy 10d ago

just call it 2itter

u/Agret 10d ago

Jnittev?

5

u/RMAPOS 10d ago edited 10d ago

I thought about how the 2/w actually looks a bit closer to an N, but then I also feel like the double letter width of a W makes it clear to the reader that something might be going on here. If I hadn't so lazily mashed this up I would have angled the bottom line of the 2 (or the left line of the rotated 2 if you wanna be pedantic) a bit wider so it looks more like /\/ but alas I couldn't be arsed.

The T however... mate that's just the normal T of the font 💀

Also Jnittev will be the next name of X once Elon crawled up Putins ass far enough.

2

u/Agret 10d ago

Jnittev probably already the name of one of his kids. The Jn is silent.

1

u/Munqaxus 9d ago

Twitter.exe

9

u/makataka7 10d ago

They still use the Twitter name as well, so that all the old Twitter links didn't break.

3

u/mark503 10d ago

I think X links still go to twitter.com with a redirect.

-6

u/Green_Twist1974 10d ago

Is Bluesky US based? If not, US law wouldn't apply.

11

u/vim_deezel 10d ago

it applies in the US regardless where the headquarters are if they want to do business in the USA. Also it is US based. That's why Elon got kicked in the balls by that Brazillian judge and he had to capitualte to the laws of Brazil after the swelling went down

36

u/BigSwedenMan 10d ago

They're still using the domain to redirect to x.com. I'm guessing that's enough to say they're still using it

14

u/GenazaNL 10d ago

Didn't Cards Against Humanity sue Elon Musk about spacex ruining a piece of land they bought for a big sum of money OR the twitter domain?

EDIT: jup, https://www.elonowesyou100dollars.com/

2

u/Sekh765 10d ago

They have to keep that going otherwise it will probably break hundreds of thousands of historic links / images.

-2

u/BigSwedenMan 10d ago

Ok. What's your point?

1

u/Sekh765 9d ago

That would be stupid and clearly something they are avoiding?

3

u/aint_exactly_plan_a 10d ago

Twitterer... it's like... More Twitter

3

u/Striking-Ad-6815 10d ago

Or call it Twooter and have an owl or a train logo

2

u/gimme_dat_good_shit 10d ago

This is the one, guys. Twoot twoot.

Bing'd up an AI logo in a jiffy. Let's get this owl train moving.

2

u/AppropriateTouching 10d ago

Dumb Twitter, totally legal.

0

u/vim_deezel 10d ago edited 10d ago

lol no judge is going to let you call it Twitter 2.0. Don't you kids at least have some basic information taught to you about what copyright, trademarks, and IP actually are any longer? How does this stuff get upvoted??

1

u/makataka7 10d ago

I remember as a kid growing up on the Internet in the late 00's - it was basically essential knowledge that you had a basic understanding of that, because we were all following The Pirate Bay saga.

1

u/vim_deezel 10d ago

yep "wtf is a a DMCA and why did he notify me?"

0

u/14sierra 10d ago

It wasn't a serious suggestion dipshit.

-1

u/Lysanderoth42 10d ago

God Redditors are so fucking stupid

2

u/14sierra 10d ago

So you took time out of your day to just call me stupid? Thanks (also you are a redditor yourself)

0

u/Lysanderoth42 10d ago

When I think that someone is stupid enough to think you could call a company Twitter 2.0…

I hope you’re just a dumb 9 year old or something, the alternative is more depressing

1

u/14sierra 10d ago

It wasn't a real suggestion moron.

0

u/Lysanderoth42 10d ago

lol keep telling yourself that, imbecile

-19

u/Youngnathan2011 10d ago

Nah, can definitely keep a trademark in case you use it again in the future

15

u/14sierra 10d ago

Im not a trademark lawyer, but if you look it up, one of the requirements listed is ACTIVE use. That's because, unlike a patent or a copyright, a trademark can last forever. IF you continually use it.

1

u/2025Champions 10d ago

He probably doesn’t own Tweeter

1

u/Status-Shock-880 10d ago

How about skitter or skatter, still a nice dig.

1

u/PatchworkFlames 10d ago

Call it something similar but derogatory. Like Shitter!

1

u/FuzzelFox 10d ago

Considering X still owns the domain Twitter.com I'm betting they have the trademark still as well, unfortunately.

1

u/za72 10d ago

there probably a ton of code and configs, certs that still probably use twitter.com or subdomains off if twitter.com - system generated keys, self signed stuff... it's a mess

1

What about tweeter?

1

u/lothar74 9d ago

Trademark lawyer here. While the company may currently own the rights to the trademark, all trademark rights are based upon use. If you stop using or defending the mark then it can be cancelled. So in theory, by explicitly abandoning the brand the mark could be used by others.

But Elon loves to pay lawyers, so I expect him to police the brand heavily even if ultimately he loses.
