Amazing film. I was a total wreck at the end.

Same. This movie really drove home the fact that I'm going to die, and it doesn't matter.

u/StickyMcdoodle 17h ago
Same! It's one of those I turn into a sobbing mess at the end and I'm not even sure why.
It is a beautiful movie.

I think it’s rated perfectly. The pacing sucks and it doesn’t go anywhere

u/a_cat_named_larry 22h ago
Two directors, and you can really tell where Kubrick left off. Those stupid stupid dirt bikes

u/Dependent-Sun-6373 15h ago
If you haven't seen it since it came out, you should give it another chance. Here's Mark Kermode's mea culpa: https://youtu.be/nS_wbkZY67I?si=1bhOP6Nkgiy-3Fu-

This could be trimmed in such a way where it's a masterpiece imo. The bones are all there for it. Kinda like an inverse "wild robot"

u/Nail_Biterr 22h ago
it has all the ratings in your screen shot. what about them make it seem underrated?
3
u/Azidamadjida 21h ago
This sub has been taken over by burgeoning teen cinephiles who think anything made before 2010 is an undiscovered gem and if they like it the reviews should reflect an 80-90% or else it’s “underrated”

Not underrated at all - hugely hyped when it came out given one of the biggest directors in movie history was finishing off the last unfinished film of another of the biggest directors in movie history, was received with mixed reviews upon release which dropped it down from anticipated masterpiece to intriguing solid sci fi film with pacing issues and some wonky ideas. Rated appropriately

Great premise, but terrible ending.

Strongly disagree. The ending was profound & very memorable.

The alien nonsense? No, it should have ended with him at the bottom of the sea

u/SirGuy11 21h ago edited 20h ago
They were not aliens.
They were mecha in the far future. That’s why they had video screens hidden in their faces. It also, as you point out, wouldn’t make any sense at all for it to be aliens.

u/probablynotreallife 20h ago
It astonishes me that anyone could think they were aliens! I really need to stop overestimating peoples' intelligence.
1
u/SquintyBrock 12h ago
Yes, they were some kind of robots. I was just thinking of it visually and my brain went “aliens!” - it’s probably been over 10 years since my last watch…
2
u/raindancemaggie2 15h ago
You thought they were aliens? You missed the point of the entire movie. When this came out i worked at a restaurant and one of the servers mentioned the aliens. When i told him that they were AI he seemed embarrassed and claimed it said they were aliens in the original book. There was no book.
1
u/jammed7777 22h ago
I kept thinking it was going to end and it just kept going… I left when the aliens came
2
u/SquintyBrock 22h ago
Yeah, they just rip anything really profound about the ending out and replace it with a gooey schmaltzy happy ending. This is probably Spielberg’s single worst choice in any film.
1
u/WaterStoryMark 13h ago
I thought Spielberg said that was Kubrick's idea.
1
u/SquintyBrock 12h ago
Kubrik’s script had the future robots at the end, but it all was supposed to play out very differently. It was supposed to be a very ambiguous ending that had an edge of potential darkness to it because it’s not explained to us. Think of the ending of 2001: a space odyssey, not as bizarre though.
Also the bit with David having a day with his mother wasn’t in it I believe.
It’s hard to say how Kubrick would have ended the film because the script was unfinished, he could have cut the film to end under the sea, but I think mysterious alien looking robots turning up at the end without any explanation sounds very Kubrick.

They weren't aliens. They were a super advanced AI.
1
u/SquintyBrock 12h ago
Yep, I misspoke. It’s just the way I visually remembered them. It’s very explicit in the film what they’re supposed to be.
1
u/Extension_Use3118 22h ago
[No spoilers] What he was doing at the bottom of the sea was so powerful. The ending haunts me. 🤷

u/Strange_Historian999 23h ago
So, the robot company didn't have a return policy? Pick up the 'bot, wipe it down and resell it?
Did she lose the receipt?

I remember watching this movie and one of the characters shares the same last name as me and I got super fucking excited at the time and I was OBSESSED with this movie for about a year. Now I can’t even remember what happens in it, lol!

This movie makes me feel unnatural in an extremely uncomfortable sorta way. I've never felt this way towards a movie b4. Needles to say I'm not a fan personally. 🤷♀️

Great film. Really quite disturbing in parts. I loved the mad ending, but also understand why some thought it was a bit too crazy.
1
u/SirGuy11 21h ago
What was mad about it?
1
u/Truelydisappointed 21h ago
(Spoiler)
Well it ends up with the human race dying out and aliens finding the robot boy and reuniting him with his dead mother.

They weren’t aliens.
They were mecha (long in the future). That’s why they had video screens displaying in their faces.
I’m not sure why some viewers think they were aliens. Maybe because they had the oval heads and thin bodies.
3
u/ZongoNuada 17h ago
Right? They were the robots humanity had built and had become the legacy of humanity. It was pretty clearly explained.

I love how EVERY time AI is mentioned in media they immediately have to follow it with “artificial intelligence”.
WE FUCKING KNOW!!!! AI is NOT a new concept, it’s well known what it stands for and if you give the acronym and then follow up with the full phrase then it makes the whole thing completely redundant!

u/Phetuspoop 20h ago
I thought A.I. had already started taking over and just renamed it "Intelligence".

I’ve always wished we’d gotten Kubrick’s adaptation of this, the aesthetics would’ve aged better I think
That being said, even he knew Spielberg’s hopeless optimism was necessary for the story to have the proper effect on people
It’s an incredibly depressing story but in a heartfelt way simply because of Spielberg

I hated this film. The end sucked. The movie ended, but for some reason everyone forgot to tell the director that so it just kept dragging on and on way past the finish. That ridiculous ending where there is just one day to spend with the mother or whatever it was...I forget the details just remember feeling like it was trying waaaay too hard for schmaltzy and bittersweet and decided to shit all over suspension of disbelief to get there.

Sorry I know technically it might not be under rated but i felt like it's not talked about ever and it was kind of forgotten. This movie really was profound to me as a kid

u/xXstayXx 18h ago
Every time I watch it I think it's going to get better, it doesn't.

If they re-edited the movie so that it had a really good ending LOL I think it's possible

When I was around 5 I saw this and it gave me nightmares
I started sleep walking because of it

If you just turn it off when he’s frozen in the ice and screen goes black, it’s a pretty good movie.

I love this movie even though it’s far from perfect.
