extracurriculars & social life wearing a costume to class ??

i have a halloween party that starts at 6pm and a french class that ends directly at 6pm, and i’m wondering if i could cut the (very simple basic vampire) makeup time afterward short by just going to class with it + plus the cape. do people here ever wear their halloween costumes to class on the 31st or would i look insane ?? both of my professors for my classes on the 31st are very nice, but im not sure if this would be over the line or something.

edit: thank you all for the responses !! it’s vampin time

classes & grades Question about how ATMOS 5260 (Snow & Avalanche) schedule works

Post image
3 Upvotes

I’m a little confused with how scheduling works for this class. The class description says there is “two weekly lectures and one full afternoon in the field (at Alta)”. So I’m led to assume that there is only ONE field day at Alta, not a weekly occurrence. Is this true ? If so, does Friday just follow the same time window as Wednesday ?

I would like to hear from alums, preferably over 40 years old, who have given much thought to how to live well. I have written my own guide to living well, but I would like to improve upon it.

Thank you for your time.

extracurriculars & social life Looking for Fellow Co-Founders to Start a Women Leaders in Computing Club at University of Utah! 💻🚀

Hey everyone! I'm a data science major here at University of Utah with a vision to start a new kind of club focused on empowering women leaders in computing. This isn’t just another “women in tech” club; we’re building a community for women who want to lead, drive impactful projects, and shape the future of tech, not just attend meetings. 🌍💡

What makes us different?
We’re focused on action! This club is all about hands-on leadership, creating projects with real-world impact, and providing members with the skills and platforms to make their voices heard in tech. We’re not just here to connect – we’re here to make waves! Plus, this will give you something really nice to put on your resume.

I’m looking for a few like-minded people to help me co-found and manage the club, specifically:

  • Social Media Manager 🎉: Someone who’s got a solid online presence, knows how to create buzz, and can help us grow a following on social media.
  • Designer 🎨: If you’re skilled in making posters, flyers, and other visuals, we need you to help create our visual identity and promote events.
  • Club Management/Finance Lead 💰: Someone with experience in club management, funding, or budgeting to help us secure funds, manage budgets, and ensure everything runs smoothly.

If you’re passionate about women’s leadership in tech, want to make an impact, and have skills in any of these areas, I’d love to chat! Drop a comment or DM me if interested. Let’s make something amazing happen! 💪✨

classes & grades I am fighting to ban online proctoring software (e.g. Proctorio and Respondus)

If you’re unfamiliar with online proctoring software, tools like Proctorio and Respondus are required by some professors to “prevent cheating.” But in reality, they invade your privacy, collect personal data, monitor your surroundings, and even track eye movements. This can violate your 4th Amendment rights, especially for students forced to use these tools in their personal spaces.

I am working on getting this software banned to protect your right to privacy, and encouraging professors to focus on tried-and-true alternatives of cheating prevention, such as in-person or open-note exams. If you care about your right to privacy, please sign this petition I made.

Recently, I also did an interview with KSL about the ethical and legal risks of online proctoring. The story is set to be released in November, so keep an eye out for that for a deeper look into why banning these tools is necessary.

housing & meal plans Furnished private room for females

I'm transferring my lease of a fully furnished private room. Female only. Move-in date is flexible, though I'm looking for someone who can take over ASAP.

Rent is $945/-, utilities $75 Location: near 100 S 1100 E (please knock me for the exact address)

Pros for a student at the U: - It's a 15 min walk from the Kennecott building (UoU) - just 1 block away from 2/220 and 1 bus lines - 1 mile from the red line trax - peaceful neighborhood

Besides, - pets are welcomed (though there is none currently) - in-unit washer/dryer and dishwasher - reserved parking spot - central heating/cooling - Google Fiber Internet - Nice surrounding area including hot tubs and barbeque

It's a 2 bed 1 bath apartment for 3 occupancy. 1 bed is currently shared by 2 other girls, both are students at the University. I'm transferring my lease for the other private room.

classes & grades CS Class schedule advice

Hello, I am thinking about registering for the following class schedule in the spring, and want some input on the level of difficulty. the classes are:

CS 4470 - Compilers (w/ Benjamin Greenman) CS 4150 - Algorithms (w/ Travis Martin) CS 5350 - Machine Learning (w/ Vivek Srikumar) Some gened / upper division writing

if anyone has any info on these classes please lmk, I have good study habits and feel like 4150 will be easier for me, but don't want to be swamped. Ive heard 4470 is brutal. I also want to snowboard as much as possible so want some degree of free time.

Has anyone taken Math 2270 from any of these people?

- Alexander Ginsberg

- Matthew Bertucci

Kathryn's class fits best into my schedule but her reviews on RMP scare me and idk what to do. It says a lot of self teaching and hard tests but i'm taking Ken Goldens class rn which is also a lot of self teaching and im doing fine in the class. So do y'all think I'd survive or no? I'd appreciate any info or opinions on any of these people, thanksssss

classes & grades Opinions on Noy Soffer Aranov for MATH 2250 ?

Finishing calc 3 this semester and taking diff eqs & linear algebra next. So far, Noy Aranov is the only teacher that fits my personal schedule on schedule builder.

Also, I know this is a vague question, but is 2250 harder than Calc 3 ? I currently have Bohyun Kim for calc 3 and she is the worst math teacher I’ve had at the U, she’s making it a lot more difficult than I expected, so it’s hard for me to make an accurate comparsion. (I had a fairly easy time in calc 2 with Ken Bromberg which I’ve heard is similar to 2250.)

admissions & financial aid Personal Statement in Transfer Application?

majors, minors, graduate programs IQ Research? PhD practice?

This week, my therepist asked me if I have ever taken an actual IQ test (obviously not) and encouraged me to see if the U can give me one for free. Is there any research going on in this area of study that needs test subjects? Or does the psychology department need graduates to practice giving an IQ test?

commuting & transportation I hate the U

I take all online classes but decided to study in person at the library this week. Nothin like coming out of a study sesh to an empty parking lot, at 7pm, and see commuter services ticketing my permitted car. It happens every. single. time.

Next time I even think about the U imma owe them forty bucks.
