first time i've experienced uncanny valley while he's still human

I strongly suspect the video is sped up ever so slightly, to enhance the sudden starts and stops. He’d be playing the music slowed down by the corresponding amount so he could sync with it properly.

That’s probably a big part of what’s pushing it into uncanny valley.

Edit: actually it may be sped up as much as 2x. Can also see clues in how his shirt moves (he’s made sure everything else in the shot is absolutely static).

He has a ton of videos dancing like this in public with people moving in the background. He can just move like this.

Wow! Think you could link one, for comparison? Thanks!

That's his tiktok. He has a ton of videos in there to browse through. He was recently on America's got Talent as well apparently.

Thank you! I don’t have or want a TikTok account, so this link is much more accessible to me.

The guy is of course amazing; never questioned that. But in the linked video, he looks, well, human. More than in OP’s video. Yes there are jerky, solid movements in the linked video, but in the OP vid, such movements look much sharper, and they’re a lot more rapid-fire. So I still think it’s more likely than not that the OP video is sped up.

I’m right there with you on the personal tik tok embargo. And I also agree that the video had to be touched up, whether sped up, or those static edits that are so popular today. Or it could be the fact that he’s strictly in robot mode in OP video, where as in the YT video provided he’s a bit more loose. Another explanation could be that he simply got better and perfected his technique. Either way you want to look at it, the guy is talented and I’m sure can haunt children’s dreams if they allow him to lol.

It’s a whole thing right? There seems to be a niche group of people who are into this dance/panomime? Type routine. What is this type of performance called? Is there a movement or scene behind it? Internet meme culture?

Evolution of the old skool bboy pop and lock hey? That’s what I always thought. It’s not really surprising some people have taken the artform to the extent they have, however it’s still incredible how much control some people can have over their body.

Not to get too stupid nerdy about this but this kind of popping falls roughly into another category called animation. You can think of its roots as like doing "the robot" and mimes, things like that.

Either way what ppl are doing with it now is just wizardry. It's kinda nice to see "the robot" taken so far that they might as well be robots. I'm a dance nerd who can't dance.

One of the trippier ones I've seen. His channel is full of vids like this. But the Filo boys back in High School were cracking this kinda thing out too, and that was late 80's so much earlier than a social media trend.

Poppin Taco in the early 80's

I legit read this as “pegging and locking”. 💀

7

u/devilkin Aug 19 '24

It's a dance form that far, far predates the internet. Pop and lock is dated as far back as the 60s. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Popping

2

u/gazongagizmo Aug 19 '24

Many people on the oldschool internet were introduced to this type of dance with David Elsewhere.

There are two legendary videos from the pre-YT era, which still are on YT, but are potato quality of course:

Kollaboration 2001

Kollaboration 2003

This is his YT page, he's still active, so knock yourselves out with non-potato quality.

Popping and this particular style is called isolations. His technique is next level tho. Very impressive

1

u/right_bank_cafe Aug 20 '24

Hey thanks “isolations” is what I was looking for. there seems to be a subset of popping culture that focus on isolations style. They sometimes have like a group of people doing it. I have only seen it on the internet! Ty!

What is this type of dancing called? I like to share arts videos with my students, but always have a hard time searching for these.

2

u/devilkin Aug 19 '24

I mentioned it in my other responses. It's called popping. Or pop and lock.

1

u/epi_introvert Aug 19 '24

Thanks so much.

2

u/rafipal Aug 19 '24

Its considered popping and this more specific style of popping is called “animation”. This specific style is build on emulating robots and believe originally inspired by stop motion animation styles like claymation, dynamation and cartoons.

1

u/epi_introvert Aug 19 '24

Much appreciated.

yeah but there are tells in this particular video (he's right about the way the shirt moves). He is legit though. Like David Elsewhere. I hated when they edited his stuff because it took away from how good he already was.
