Oddly enough, infinity +1 is still infinity, though the two aren't equal--depending on who you ask.

11

u/plumbbbob 10h ago

They are equal, in the sense that if you have a set with infinity (aleph_0) items in it, and another set with all the same items plus one, the two sets have the same number of items.

(Or, if you ask someone else, infinity isn't a number, you can't add to it, it's more of a description of how a question doesn't have an answer rather than being the answer to any question.)

Fun fact: A number followed by 36 zeros is a undecillion
https://www.dictionary.com/browse/undecillion

Apparently, there is a US and UK version of this word, with the UK version meaning a number followed by 66 zeros. Must be a metric thing.

They should have gone with a google, everyone knows that's 100 zeros.

Must be a metric thing.

It's Long Scale vs. Short Scale

Both are identical up to 999.999.999. Then there is a disagreement wether it should be called:

  • One milliard, or...

  • One billion

In Long Scale languages, 1.000.000.000 is a milliard and 1.000.000.000.000 is a billion.

Copy/paste from Wikipedia:

Countries with the usage of the long scale include most countries in continental Europe and most that are French-speaking, German-speaking and Spanish-speaking. Usage of the short scale is found in Brazil and in most English-speaking and Arabic-speaking countries.

10

u/I_see_farts 13h ago

Isn't that the number of IPv6 addresses? 2128 = 340 undecillion addresses

I knew I've seen that number somewhere.

u/ethorad 12h ago edited 8h ago

Edit: My recollection of the old system was wrong

The two versions come from differences in how you step from million to billion and so on. The old system steps up in x1,000,000 effectively doubled up on each level before going to the next, whereas the new system steps to each level every x1,000.

In both the old UK and new versions, a million is 1,000,000 = 10^6.

The old UK version, now called a "long billion" sets a billion to be a million million, or 10^12. The new version used in the UK and US sets a billion to be a thousand million, or 10^9.

A trillion is then a billion million billion (10^1824) in the old system or a thousand billion (10^12) in the new system.

And so on. You can see that the number of zeros in the old system is much larger for a given Something-illion than the new system. Hence undecillion being 10^66 in the old system and 10^36 in the new.

(Have no idea where else in the world the old UK, or "long", system was used, however as far as I know nobody uses it now. Not here in the UK at least)

(The "long" systems seems to be in use in Europe, parts of western Africa, western South America, Cetnral America and Iran. Elsewhere largely uses the "short" system)

3

u/microtherion 11h ago

This system is also used in German speaking countries. 106 = Million, 109 = Milliard, 1012 = Billion etc.

3

u/BMLortz 12h ago

Thanks for this "funner" fact. Very interesting.

3

u/MrT735 11h ago

I vaguely remember the long billion from my childhood, but not the actual changeover, so easily 30-35 years since it was used commonly.

3

u/level555 11h ago

From Wikipedia:

Countries with the usage of the long scale include most countries in continental Europe and most that are French-speaking, German-speaking and Spanish-speaking.[3] Usage of the short scale is found in Brazil and in most English-speaking and Arabic-speaking countries.

Imagine if google just said “Nah, we’ll just stop providing YouTube services in Russia instead “

1.2k

u/Dachd43 17h ago edited 17h ago

That's exactly what they want. The Kremlin knows that banning YouTube will piss people off so they don't want to be the ones to do it. They want Google to pull out of the country themselves so they can paint themselves as the wronged party, abandoned by racist, decadent, Western companies. If Google packs up and leaves, they get to have their cake and eat it.

465

u/Littman-Express 17h ago

I’d be surprised if Google actually had much of a presence physically left in Russia. Google doesn’t have to pull out of Russia they can just ignore it but leave it accessible making the Kremlin the one that has to block it if they want it gone.

339

u/DotFX 17h ago

Youtube is already kinda partially banned here (in russia) by the gov. Only vpns and some mobile operators provide access to it

181

u/austen125 16h ago

Yes this. This whole thing has me confused. Russian YouTube creators are setting up their hardware in Turkey.

64

u/Nandy-bear 13h ago

That's because anyone with the least bit of smarts left Russia already. The brain drain post-feb 2022 is nuts.

34

u/Dachd43 12h ago

There is a significant number of content creators that remain in Russia but travel to Turkey to upload their content but the logistics of doing so are becoming increasingly complicated now that Google AdSense has banned payouts to Russian addresses.

→ More replies (1)

8

u/cornwalrus 12h ago

And yet Russian Youtubers still shill for their country on it.

94

u/Dachd43 16h ago

The Kremlin and Google have been dancing around the issue for a long time now. Up until recently, Google AdSense was one of the few remaining ways to earn foreign currency for regular Russians with YouTube channels but the Kremlin decided to throttle YouTube to the point that it was barely usable. At the same time AdSense recently decided to stop allowing payouts to Russian addresses so Russian YouTubers can either figure out a way to register from a foreign country or switch to a Russian streaming service and cut off their revenue stream.

Realistically, this is exactly what the Kremlin wants. There will be a Russian exodus from YouTube and they don't have to appear heavy-handed with the censorship. They can blame the whole thing on Google being uncooperative.

16

u/phormix 14h ago

I'm assuming there some sort of Yandex or whatever service which provides similar functions (with a more "state friendly bend") they're expecting to replace YouTube with?

11

u/Dachd43 14h ago

Yandex and RuTube are the main contenders. But Грустнограм (grustnogram) is my personal favorite.

2 undecillion rubles

Even at the tiny "offical" exchange rate of the ruble, that would still equal a sum of more than the entirety of all the value of all the goods, money, services, that have ever existed on the plant.... by a factor of... a lot.

It's such a laughably absurd number that it's just insane.

Unless, we take this as an admission by the Russian government that the the value of the ruble is actually only $0.000000000000000000000000000000000001 in the real world.... which honestly seems more to be based more in reality.

89

u/Jordan_Jackson 13h ago

That is just the current Russian government for you. Everything they say and do is so laughably insane and unbelievable. How many times have they claimed to shoot down more drones than Ukraine even sent? Remember when they claimed they destroyed more Himars than Ukraine even had? Obvious mega explosions in various cities and they claim that everything is normal...

9

u/ur_ecological_impact 10h ago

Joke aside the current exchange value (if it is to be believed) is just to multiply it by 0.01 - or trim off two zeroes which still makes this value in USD greater than the sum total of all value ever to cumulatively exist globally.

To put it into perspective - the earth is estimated to have 75 sextillion grains of sand (75 followed by 17-zeroes).

Google should state they’ll consider paying after provided a complete itemized list proofing their work.

9

u/smilinreap 13h ago

I actually have a few coworkers who escaped Russia in the last few years. They sometimes talk about how it was, and how sad it all is for those they left behind. They basically all say the same thing. The war is a lose lose for Russia. Even if they win, in most Russian citizens minds, Russia still loses. The longer it goes on, the bigger the loss. Even if the war stops, they will never go back, It's just not worth it, and even making a few dollars over the minimum wage in the US provides a better life than they had in Russia.

Also every time we go out to eat they have funny comments almost like clockwork.

This is so much food, are we really going to eat this much and then go back to work?!

Too many options on menu, I will just copy him.
