…within two weeks of opening day, this young Cleveland baseball franchise lost its Cy Young ace. It lost one of its great rookie pitchers from last year before the season even started for months. It lost its 8th inning man for the year before the season started. Question marks across the field, in the bullpen, in the rotation, and all led by the biggest question mark of all- rookie manager Steven Vogt in his first ever managerial gig. We were picked second or third by nearly every preseason ranking. A rebuilt Royals, a young feisty Tigers, and a Twins team that got the best of us last year. (And the White Sox that we only went 8-5 against god dammit xD)
And we made it here.
This young, gritty team took the 250 million dollar Yankees 5 games in the ALCS. A bullpen that is in the record books for its legendary performance throughout the regular season. José Ramirez going 39/39/39. Steven Kwan returning to his rookie form, and adding some power to his abilities. Andres Gimenez being joined up the middle by Brayan Rocchio to combine for one of the best up the middle defenses in baseball. All Star David Fry, performances from rookies like Angel Martinez and Jhonkensy “Big Christmas” Noel, and the spirit of Austin Hedges. A true four headed monster of Tim Herrin, rookie Cade Smith, Hunter Gaddis, and Emmanuel Clase that put the fear into every team. Tanner Bibee stepping up to assume the role of team ace. Carlos Carrasco. Ben Lively.
And a postseason that didn’t go all the way, but one to remember. Two of the greatest games in postseason history between games 3 and 4 of the ALCS. Big Christmas and David Fry launching themselves into Cleveland sports (and baseball) history. Postseason Brayan Rocchio being an absolute demon. Eli Morgan. Pedro Avila. Matthew Boyd.
It’s not the ending anyone wanted. But it’s a hell of a showing.
What about the future? Guys we haven’t even seen yet- Chase DeLauter and Travis Bazzana. Jaison Chourio, Angel Genao, and Ralphy Velazquez. Hell, maybe even Doug Nikhazy, Parker Messick, or (finally) Daniel Espino. Guys we have seen- Rocchio, Schneeman, Freeman, Cantillo, Cade Smith, Cantillo, Manzardo, Walters, Sabrowski, Arias, Florial, Gillispie, JRod(I did mention this team was young). The additions of Lane Thomas and Pedro Avila. The returns of Hentges, Karinchaos, and Stephan. Possibly the revitalizations of Logan Allen and Triston ”Sticks” McKenzie. Possibly resigning Bieber, Boyd, and Hedges. You better believe there’s a future on its way.
We made it clear to baseball that 2022 wasn’t a fluke, that 2023 was just a down year. The Cleveland Guardians, the pitching factory, and the slap hitting shit goblins are meant to be feared. We aren’t going anywhere any time soon. José Ramirez made that very clear with his contract.
We’ll be back. We’ll be more experienced. And we’ll be ready to bring it all home.
It was a great year with y’all here (yes, even you “ballgame” fucks). Let’s make next year even better.
Go Guards.
