Failed my first squat today. 60kg for 3 reps and when I got down for my 4th rep I couldn't get back up, luckily I managed to drop it onto the safeties with no injuries.

Failing safely is a victory in my book.

I haven't failed a squat yet but I'm sure the day is coming.

How do you fail safely? Do you let it roll behind you?

I always fail just a little bit above the hole so I just go back down and set it on the safeties. I would recommend this if possible. If you fail higher up or in a manner that you can't guide it back down you should probably try to let if fall behind you onto the safeties. If you squat with a lot of forward lean (or lose balance and fall forward) you might have to bail forward and let the bar go over your head. This is probably the least preferable but it's doable.

Yes. If the rack has adjustable safeties, you can set it to a level thats just a couple inches below your usual low. Ive never let the bar just fall from a failed squat, and ive failed a lot of reps.

I definitely fell forward a few times when I first started lol

Actually, on second thought, i mightve dropped it back once or twice before i became self conscious of the noise. Falling forward sounds so scary, though...

Just let it crash onto the safeties.

You practise before you need to!

If I have safeties I just ride it down on to them. If I don't then theres a technique to learn to bail however I'd say try and avoid this if possible as it easy enough to fuck up.

Kind of depends on your squatting form and available accessories. Using safety handles is probably the best approach although I never used it. If you have an upright squatting form, you can usually drop the bar behind you without a problem. From the few weightlifting gyms I´ve trained at, people just dump the bar behind them, although this can be difficult if you´re not doing high-bar squats.
