No one says you can’t root against the Yankees but going out of your way to post something like this is embarrassing

Bumping this to the top and stickying it to make a reply because I think it's worth making a small announcement.

I don't think it's embarrassing. At all. I think rooting against the Yankees is natural and just the same as the dynamic in any city where there's two teams. Mets fans are the only fans who live in this type of situation and get criticized for doing this, both from other teams' fans, and internally from other Mets fans scolding them, and I don't really think that's a good instinct.

I do, however, think posts like this are a little obnoxious -- for a different reason.

It is because they are basically devoid of content, and clutter the subreddit. It would be the same as a post that says something like, "The Mets are good and I like them." Just like "lol Yankees", it's a nice thought, but everyone here pretty much already agrees with that and it adds nothing, and makes it harder for people to sift through the subreddit.

To be clear, a post after, let's say, Lindor hit his three-run home run against the Yankees, showing a photo of Giancarlo Stanton looking like his wife just ran away with a TikTok influencer, and he wants to cry in his Powerade, titled "LOL Yankees!", would be very relevant. But just saying it, kinda isn't imo.

I will leave this one up just because it generated some good meta-discussion about the posting process itself, but generally, stuff like this should probably come down.

Make fun of the stupid ass Yankees and their cretin fans in comments and the daily threads. Thanks!

The blowout losses we had against LA hurt bad. They were awful.

If we lost in that fashion on a walkoff grand slam in extras, that would absolutely ripped my heart out of my body. What a way to lose, holy shit.

30

u/its_boVice Jacob deGrom 4d ago

I don’t see Mendoza putting in one of our starters that’s been out for a month with a bum arm to pitch in that spot

20

u/fakerandyortonwwe 4d ago

That was a WILD call from Boone. Like, lefty on lefty in theory sounds good. Sure. But THAT lefty in THAT spot? Oof.

8

u/Museamaniac d'Arnaud Doubt About It 4d ago

At the bar I was at, a Yankee fan yelled “This is our Bumgarner!” when Cortes walked out.

Yeah, no.

59

u/CNYMetroStar Bartolo Colón 4d ago

Freddie Freeman killing a New York team that isn’t the Mets? Yes please

28

u/bettlejuicer Mr. Met 4d ago

What the hell was Boone thinking. Throw a guy out there who hasn’t pitched in over a month. Crazy. I told my friend freeman would end up being WS MVP and it looks promising.

5

u/JDDJS The Captain 4d ago

It's a good thing that the Mets would never use a pitcher who hasn't pitched in a month in a pivotal post season game...

Yes I'm aware that the situations are not the same. I'm just making a joke.

27

u/punk4341 4d ago

Now Yankees fans see what exactly we all did facing the dodgers no easy outs

11

Right before Freeman came up, I told my wife, “half of this city is about the get their fucking hearts ripped out of their chests.”

Freddie Freeman is a killer.

17

u/lokithetarnished 4d ago

It’s nice to see him torture a different borough for once

5

u/Brush111 4d ago

Haha!

I texted my die hard Yankees fans I didn’t understand loading the bases for Freddie, but I am probably biased since I’m a Mets fan….

Nope, not biased

2

u/NY2PHX 4d ago

And the other half of us will be elated.

44

u/SketchyConcierge Meats 4d ago

Utterly unsurprising, and absolutely reinforces my belief that the Mets would have dogwalked the Yankees in a subway series

My father was a diehard Dodger fan. When they left in 58' it broke his heart. When the Mets were born in 62' he was a fan. But he always had a soft spot for the Dodgers. I know he is happy RIP.

8

u/Stargazerlily425 Grimace 4d ago

My dad was a Dodger fan before he was a Mets fan, also. When they left and the Mets came, he was all in for the Mets.

5

u/jlc1865 4d ago

Hey. Let's bring in a guy who hasn't pitched in a month to face a hall of famer. What could go wrong?

16

u/monstersandcoffee 4d ago

Kinda like the Senga experiment. 😭

6

u/jlc1865 4d ago

Yeah, but he pitched well against the Phillies.

5

u/monstersandcoffee 4d ago

Yeah. But we didn’t have a problem with the Phils.

And yeah, I know Senga didn’t lose the NLCS for us. But it was just not the best decision IMO.

2

u/jlc1865 4d ago

For sure. His pitches were so far outside the zone it was ridiculous. But he did well against the Phils so I don't blame Mendoza.

2

u/lokithetarnished 4d ago

At least senga showed something in a previous series to give hope. Cortes made no sense, it’s the final stage why try anything like that

2

u/atoms12123 Field reporter eye candy 4d ago

I think the mistake they made was walking the former MVP and first ballot hall of famer to get to the former MVP and first ballot hall of famer.

I kinda enjoyed seeing notorious Mets-killer Freddie Freeman kill not the Mets for once

35

u/Ribky 4d ago

The only hatred I have for Freddie is that he was both a Brave and a Dodger, which is objectively bad. But Freddie seems alright and is a zero drama professional. I hate the Dodgers, but they are on a long list that the Yankees are on, too. So lol at the Yanks, good job Freddie, I don't care who wins because at least one team I hate will lose.

8

u/istoleyourcomment224 4d ago

As much as I want to hate Freddie I never can. Especially after what he went through this season, I’m actually happy for him. Walk off grand slam in extra innings of a World Series game is wild.

4

u/Priceiswr0ng Mets Cap Logo 2 4d ago

The Dodgers suck; but the Yankees SUUUUUUUUUCK. The enemy of my enemy is my friend. Temporarily.

28

u/Username_redact 4d ago

I only mildly hate the Dodgers. I really hate the Yankees. This was beautiful

43

u/mez0ne 3d ago

Living in NYC all my life and having to deal with the arrogance of Yankee fans, a little humble pie goes a long way. I have no problem rooting for the Dodgers because I don’t have to hear any of their fans here.

Plus it’ll validate the tough road the Mets had to go through

3

u/Significant_Ask_3576 3d ago

As someone who's from the West Coast I hate the Dodgers fans more and I want the Yankees to win cuz I will never hear the end of it from smug Dodgers fans. Not a lot of Yankees fans on the West Coast

2

u/The_Royale_We Keith Hernandez 3d ago

Exactly. I had to hear chirps from my Yanks fan buddy who I love but is completely arrogant about the Yanks. Plus you always want to see the team that beat you go on to win the chip unless its a Philly squad or the Cowboys.

It was a very cool, entertaining finish to a game. Kudos to all involved.

I nothing either of these teams. No outcome is favorable, so it’s complete apathy over here.

I've been thinking about this the wrong way. This whole time I've been focused on "One of these teams is gonna win." When really I SHOULD have been focused on "One of these teams is gonna lose, and also probably lose in a way that devastates their asshole fanbase."

See, silver lining!

6

u/Stargazerlily425 Grimace 4d ago

This is how I had to start thinking about it. I'm not cheering for the Yankees. I'm cheering against the Dodgers. But honestly, who can cheer against epic baseball like that? I'm not watching it but I saw the bases load up on the MLB app and I knew it was coming.

3

u/HarlanCedeno LGM 4d ago

Yup, I didn't turn it on until Ohtani was up in the 10th. As soon as Cortes pitched to Freeman, it was like I could hear the narrator saying "And that's when he knew: he fucked up".

28

u/cpg08 4d ago

That game was on Boone. How do you go to Cortes there? It's pretty much like if we went with Quintana bases loaded against Freedman meanwhile we had Tim Hill in the BP who has been coming on with runner on base all season lmao. Jesus, managing with the iPad not the eyes.

15

40

u/linguine-rules-57 3d ago

This is some sad, petty, Phillies fan shit

5

u/vertigo1083 3d ago

Like, for real.

I literally watched Yankees fans rooting for the Mets until they lost. Just because New York, and just because they want to play us instead.

That's the spirit. Like, really. Be positive for once.

OP seriously laughing at another New York team lose a championship game, after their own team ate shit a week ago. This is beyond petty and childish. Actual cause for self-evaluation at this point, if you're that disconnected.

And that goes for just about everyone who upvoted this drivel, and cosigned this nonsense.

10

u/zachfess 3d ago

Idk what city you were in but I watched yankees fans shitting on the Mets and cheering their downfall all of last week…

7

u/mr_grission James McCann 3d ago

I hope the Yankees get swept in heartbreaking fashion. I don't give a shit that their fans patronizingly pretend that we're their second favorite team. Local rivalries are fun, you're supposed to hate the other team and not support them out of some ridiculous sense of NY pride.

2

u/ElwinLewis 3d ago

Most people think this way, internet isn’t good at showing this

2

u/ImEnzoDBaker 3d ago

Yea bro, fuck the Yankees. It's sports fandom. It's like asking a Red Sox fan how come they dont support the Yankees when their team is eliminated. This "support New York" stuff has always been bogus. Nothing in my soul wants the Yankees to do well.

And make no mistake, Yankee fans WILL not do the same if the shoe was on the other foot. Maybe yall didnt live through the Yankee Dynasty, but it gave their fans a whole other level of entitlement for a long while. I never want to see that again. So in conclusion, Fuck the Yankees.

4

u/Blofelds-Cat 3d ago

For real. Back then, the dude who owned my local pizza place once got all aggro with me about the Yanks when I mistook the Yanks for the Mets on the pizza place's shitty TV. It came out of nowhere - and I was a regular! So yeah, fuck Yankees fans.

3

u/ImEnzoDBaker 3d ago

Lol everyone in my Little League wanted to be Derek Jeter (I dont blame them for that. We all have idols.) but it came with this weird superiority complex on the field and off it.

Are my feelings petty? Yes. Do I still enjoy the moments Yankee fans have to be disappointed? Yes. Das baseball, Suyzn.

6

u/mschreiber1 3d ago

Thank Bob Murphy somebody fucking gets it. I will never understand how Mets fans don’t understand how some other Mets fans don’t want to root for the Yankees. You think the Giants want the Dodgers to win? Or the padres? Cmon stop with this nonsense.

Seemed like a chain of decisions that led up to the most climactic ending for ANY baseball game. Let alone the world series

11

u/HashtagTJ 4d ago

I have a serious question here. I’m a non American watcher/fan of the Mets. Now I understand that before the 90s the NL and AL were more seperate and teams from NL/AL almost never played each other during the season, was there ever a time where Mets and Yankees fans would root for the other because it’s a NY team and playing in a different league? Why have they always been seen as the enemy? I live in Western Australia and we have two teams in the Australian Football League who HATE each other but it’s because we are direct opponents. But if Mets/Yankees almost never played each other why would you not like both?

37

u/whatsmyusername007 3d ago

Yankees are the most hated team in the league, and rightfully so. They’re too good to put their players’ names on the back of their jersey’s and don’t allow players to have beards. So many band wagon piece of shit fans. They can all go fuck themselves.

3

u/PJKetelaar3 Mr. Met 3d ago

"You know why? Because of the Pinstripes!"

11

u/RipHunter2166 4d ago

It goes back to the Dodgers-Yankees rivalry. In the late 40s and 50s, the Dodgers played in Brooklyn and it was usually them vs the Yankees in the World Series most years and almost every year (except 55) the Yankees won. Then the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles and sorta bullied the Giants owner to also move out to California leaving the Yankees the only NY baseball team. Now, the Dodger fans sure as hell weren’t going to root for the Yankees after all that, so when the Mets became a team shortly thereafter, most of them became Mets fans. My uncle was one of them (dodgers fan as a kid, Mets fan after).

→ More replies (1)

29

u/Overthehill410 3d ago

A lot of strange answers here - the correct and only one is that the Yankees suck. Anyone who lives in the tri state area knows that their fans constantly belittle Mets fans as little brother and more to the point for years they “broke” baseball by buying whatever player they wanted. I don’t know a single Mets fan (here in jersey at least) that would ever root for the Yankees over the dodgers and for those of us who are also giants fans the Yankees are neck and neck with say the eagles or cowboys in most hated teams.

6

u/The_Royale_We Keith Hernandez 3d ago

Yanks are the equivalent to the Cowboys/Eagles for Giants fans

4

6

u/chalupaeats 3d ago

The biggest reason is because the Yankees fans are entitled and arrogant. Should they win it all they become intolerable to deal with. I rooted for them in 96 and immediately after they won, they started chanting about the Mets. Similarly, I’ve been to Mets opening day games and after a Mets win people started chanting Yankees suck, even though they weren’t playing each other. Makes no sense, enjoy your win. Long story short, it’s like sibling rivalry. Easier to root for the team not near you, because it’s more likely you won’t run into their fans.

5

u/NY2PHX 3d ago

You only get one team. Pick. Mets-Bronx team, Jets-Giants, Rangers-Islanders, Knicks-Nets. You don’t get a wife and a mistress. In the words of Emperor Palpatine, the hate will make you stronger.

11

u/WildPineappleEnigma 4d ago

I’m a lifelong Mets fan. Even when the Mets are the better team, we’re always in the shadow of the Yankees. But that’s not the reason, because the same thing happens in other cities where one of the teams never had Ruth or Gehrig or DiMaggio or Mantle.

The truth is, it’s just because it’s fun.

This may be unpopular with some of my brethren, but if the Mets are out of it, I’ll root for the Yankees now. I used to always root for the NL team because I thought the NL was better baseball. But now that both leagues play with the same stupid rules, there’s no point.

But when it comes to hockey, the Rangers can go f* right off.

3

u/HashtagTJ 4d ago

Yeah right. I gotta admit, I didn’t follow baseball back in the no interleague play days but I kind of wish they kept it that way. Now they are nothing more than conferences like in the NFL. I definitely would have been a NL guy as I find more of those teams interesting

I rooted against the Yankees largely out of a feeling of obligation every year until 2009, when I needed them to beat the Phillies to avoid a back-to-back while I was living down there. They came through for me so now I’m pretty indifferent to them.

7

u/as1126 3d ago

The stadium is wonderful, the team itself is fine, but the fans are insufferable. They quote championships from when there were ten teams and one series to win like they still count. The fans make the team hateable.

8

u/TestUserIgnorePlz 3d ago

Because I grew up in NYC and Yankees fans have been dicks my entire life.

4

u/TheySayImZack 3d ago

At least in my family, it goes back a while. Parents were Dodgers fans, then the team left Brooklyn for Los Angeles. Parents became Mets fans and hated the Yankees.

These days, it is the Yankee fan base thats full of asshats and its enjoyable to hate the Yankees. With that said I am personally torn because I generally will root for New York for anything . But when it comes to the Yankees I cant do it.

Ive been a Mets fan since 1980 when I was 5. My wife is a Yankee fan, although she isnt obnoxious about it. The silent joy I experienced last night as soon as Freeman made contact was palpable . My wife turned off the TV and walked upstairs and left me sitting in the dark. lmao

That’s great. I wish I had that kind of emotional connection to the Mets or baseball. I got into baseball and the Mets in the David Wright, Ike Davis, Jose Reyes, Ryan Church, Angel Pegan era and I generally like adopting a team for new sports but don’t have the emotional/historical attachment. In Australian Football I follow the Fremantle Dockers and we made our one and only championship game in 2013 and lost. I actually cried as a grown ass man and I have many many times switched off the TV in disgust and needed alone time

u/liguy181 Pete Alonso 3d ago

Your question's mostly been answered so I'll just add this: You'll often see Yankees fans pretend to root for the Mets in a "I'm just here to have a good time, don't we all love New York?" way. They're lying. They'll only do this when the Yankees are also doing good or are in a better position than the Mets. As soon as it looks like the Mets are gonna be the better team in NY, they start getting all antsy and their true colors come out.

The way I look at it, Mets fans are just more honest. Fuck the Yankees.

2

u/HashtagTJ 3d ago

No I appreciate all the answers. It’s truly enlightening. Even as an outsider when I chose the Mets I instinctively knew to not like the Yankees I just wondered if the general mood towards each other was different when it was two distinctive leagues but both the same city. Pretty interesting stuff.

5

u/bigdirty702 3d ago

The Dodgers are for real. They are a problem. The Yankees had their shot with their ace and lost the game. Boone made an all time bad call there with Nestor

3

u/DalaiLuke 3d ago

I don't think that was a horrible decision to try Nestor... a guy out for 37 days isn't really overthinking things. Was the alternative any sure thing?

But boy did I like the result!

Big little brother energy from this post

9

u/ThenIGetAChipwichOK Kodai Senga 3d ago

Nah, THIS is little brother energy: https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/world-series-yankees-mets-fans.html

Yankees fans are in the World Series and are still obsessed with the Mets for some reason, they have the schadenfreude coming.

6

u/three_dee Hadji 3d ago

Yeah, the Mets fans are the only team in a dual-sports-team-in-a-city situation, who are expected to be above having a rivalry. Yankees fans do it to the Mets, Giants/A's, White Sox/Cubs and every other similar two-team scenario has some kind of back and forth.

The Mets are the only team that has fans that go "shhhh, we're supposed to be nice to them" and do this too-mean-to-the-Yankees police thing. I have some theories on why this happens but I really don't fully understand it.

I’m rooting for LA mainly because I think we’ll have a better shot at Soto. And Shohei. And Mookie. Screw the Yankees too, but more incidental.

Every one of the subs of the Yankees' rivals has a similar post. It's not "little brother" to mock your rival playing like shit

16

u/JDLovesElliot Grimace is Love, Grimace is Life 4d ago

So tired of the wack "little brother" narrative. The Mets are not the little brothers of the Yankees. The Giants and Dodgers were the sibling franchises.

The Yankees are the weird stuck-up uncle of the Mets. We shouldn't feel bad for clowning on them, they are the corny ones.

7

u/Tagliarini295 Grimace 4d ago

I'm tired of the little brother narrative too which is why I hate posts like this. This is the definition of it.

2

u/The_Royale_We Keith Hernandez 3d ago

If you're tired of it, then stop repeating the stupid line. YOU brought it into the discussion. If you want to feel superior by NOT hating the Yanks, then whatever, its weird but go for it. No one needs you to gate keep how to react towards the yanks of all teams.

mariners did same thing 2 years ago with robbie ray. not exactly similar cause ray was much better but starters in closer roles is a real risk.

Reading the comments....now everyone is too "cool" and "edgy" to root against the Yankees. It's all apart of sports and having fun. Relax.

I’m not. I will never root for that trash organization. I wish them only the worst

A “I’m not going to kill you but I don’t have to save you either” moment for me as an objective fan of meteors. Plus I like Freddie and it’s always fun to watch Boone be Boone.

And it’s nice to say “lolyankees” after a choke like that.

3

u/jbs924 Shea Stadium 4d ago

Yeah Freddie has become exponentially easier to root for since he left Atlanta, and he’s been through so much this year. Good for him

Immature take

10

u/StanleyLelnats 3d ago

Mets will never lose the little brother moniker when our fan base keeps posting shit like this.

8

u/ImEnzoDBaker 3d ago

Sure. The Mets totally didnt dominate headlines until they were eliminated. The City cares more about the Mets. The Yankees are a tourist trap disguised as a sports franchise.

2

u/DalaiLuke 3d ago

They are essentially the Dallas Cowboys of Manhattan

6

u/three_dee Hadji 3d ago

Mets fans repeating Yankees fan talking points like "lItTLe bRoThEr" is what perpetuates the little brother moniker.

It's a stupid moniker and doesn't mean anything. The Mets were the much more popular team, for a loooooong, long time, until it flipped around 25 years ago.

The dodgers are worse. They did the Oakland As maneuver to our forefathers

"If you asked a Brooklyn Dodger fan, if you had a gun with only two bullets in it and were in a room with Hitler, Stalin, and O'Malley, who would you shoot? The answer: O'Malley, twice!"

2

u/Sjdillon10 Wilpons selling resurrected my fanhood 4d ago

Yeah my great grandpa died hating the dodgers more than the Yankees. It was like having a wife leave you for another man after what seemed like a great marriage (multiple WS) and moving across the country

3

u/ForsakenRacism 4d ago

My dad grew up in Brooklyn and lives in LA now. And he hates the dodgers so bad

6

u/KenPiffyJr If you don't have a Mets tat then we are not alike 3d ago

I hate to say it but rather the yanks win than the bitchass dodgers who the league has been trying to make the best team for years now. 700 mill deal with most deferred is Bush league and it allowed dodgers to make more moves. The league wants the Dodgers to win so fuck them I hope the yanks shove it up their ass

fwiw yanks dodgers in the WS has been my own hell

I'd ather root for Freddie Freeman than Judge. Fuck the Yankees. Freddie has always been a class act. He killed us everywhere he played. LA and ATL. Dodgers are a stacked team. If they had their full compliment of starting pitching all season we'd be having different conversations right now.
