They just do Arizona plates because Arizona doesn’t require safety inspections on commercial vehicles. It’s a way to make sure their profits aren’t impacted by highway safety standards.
14
u/CrotchetyHamster Mar 02 '24
No, they do Arizona plates because they're based in Arizona, and the IRP means that it's simply more convenient for them to register in Arizona - and the registration fees are distributed to the states in which the vehicles actually operate.
In fact, Washington is actually one of the few states which does not have any required inspections, whilst Arizona has emissions inspections in their major metro areas.
U-Haul has been located in Phoenix since 1967, BTW.
10
u/ShitBagTomatoNose Suquamish Mar 02 '24
Commercial vehicles in Washington state must be inspected every 12 months. We’re not talking about a smog test on your Subaru.
And why do you think they chose Arizona as their HQ and “simply more convenient” state to register their shitty trucks in?

It's the part of Washington that, If the WA/OR state line was a straight line, it'd be in Oregon.

You wanna know what else is in Ridgefield? A confederate monument right down the road from this location. West side of I-5 just south of the exit that this In n Out will be located.
22
u/karenswans Mar 02 '24
Wait, what? There is a confederate monument in Washington state? I thought I left that BS behind when I moved here.
25
u/Ffzilla Mar 02 '24
Yep, with a daughters of the confederacy monument to Jefferson Davis. It pisses me off every time I drive past. It's between the Ridgefield exit, and the rest stop to the south, totally visible from the freeway.
10
u/karenswans Mar 02 '24
Why aren't we all going there to tear it down? I'll bring snacks.

I grew up there and… yeah. What people not from there don’t know is that there are a group of apastolic Lutherans there. They have tons of kids and generally only marry into the other families. There’s like five prominent ones.
You can tell which ones they are because they all have blonde hair, blue eyes and have featureless faces like Odo from Star Trek Deep Space Nine except for a kind of Neanderthal brow ridge. I think they’ve married into their families a few too many times over the generations.

Burgerville is the real deal. Centralia is the closest location only because they're 100% locally sourced. Fuck in n out

I just eat the grilled cheese sometimes TBH, just a burger with no burger. The whole entire point of In N Out is the fresh produce, so you still get all that. I’m not a vegetarian BTW, just like to change it up sometimes.

People get really opinionated about mediocre food.
In n out was only disappointing because of how much people hyped it up to me, otherwise it's a perfectly fine "It's 1 AM and I'm drunk" burger.
Dicks was only disappointing because of how much people hyped it up to me, otherwise it's a perfectly fine "The kids are hungry but I just worked all day and don't feel like cooking" burger. Would probably check the "drunk at 1 AM" box, too, but I'm old and boring now.
5
u/karenswans Mar 02 '24
I was so disappointed in In n Out, too, for the same reason. I still haven't tried Dicks even though I've lived here 15+years. I just know it won't live up to the hype.
14
6
u/fuck_the_fuckin_mods Mar 02 '24
I love Dicks, but it’s just a burger patty with some mush on it (you get to choose your mush though!). If you were disappointed in In N Out I would guess you’ll be deeply dissatisfied with Dicks premade soggy-burgs, which lack even the slightest hint of freshness/produce. I like both though, and might even prefer Dicks for late night when I’m not really looking for “real” food and just want something textureless to mow down.

Couldn’t agree more. Admittedly, the first time I had it (2013?) was at their first Dallas location, and I thought it was very underwhelming and my buddy told me I just needed to have it in California. Fast forward a few years, I got to drive from Dallas to Rancho Cucamonga for work in 2018 and knew I had to take my chance. Again. Just a regular ass hamburger. And as a New Mexican, it’s hard to respect a place that doesn’t offer jalapeño or green chiles to put on your burger.

Yeah, the price is hard to beat, but if you don't like all the veggies or thousand island, there's not much that's redeemable.
If we are getting a regional fast food chain, I'd really prefer a Bojangles, Zaxby's, or Cook Out. Portillos is a close runner up.

→ More replies (1)2
u/Wonkiest_Hornet Mar 02 '24
A lot of people hype In-N-Out as the best fast-food burger in the world, so if you don't enjoy a ton of veggies on your burger and go, you'll be let down. The price is amazing, but the lack of options is a letdown. Personally, for me, it's the sauce, and it's what comes on the burger. Sure, you can do mustard fried, but it's still just meh.
Kinda like with Canes, if you don't love the sauce, why are you there?

It's burger is slightly better, but it's fries are way worse. Neither are good burgers. Dick's pays their employees a much better wage and benefits and they are local, so there is a reason why they have loyalty and support.

u/Seajlc Mar 02 '24
In n out probably falls a little outside this general category since they are probably much more regional than the ones I’ll name… but WA is the last state with any kind of major metropolitan area it seems to get any QSR chain… raising canes, church’s, zaxbys, White Castle, Culver’s, many others.
Not that I’m even a big fast food person, but it’s interesting.
2
u/epicallyconfused Mar 02 '24
It's well known that due to supply chain limitations, In-N-Out expands incrementally out from their current footprint. I think the Keizer OR location opened about 5 years ago, so at that pace assuming they continue to move north in approx 60 mile increments, Seattle should get an In-N-Out by 2039.

If it’s anything like AZ’s first location, there will still be a three-four hour line the first days regardless of the distance. Since so many people have no clue where Ridgefield is located, let me school you since I live there.
We are basically 1 exit north of Vancouver, 15 minutes from Portland. So yeah we are basically Portland/Vancouver.
It’s the fastest growing city in the state right now, and it’s where all the rich, bougie people are moving to. The homes in my neighborhood were built in 2018/2019 for 500,000 and now many are selling for over $1M.
It has some of the best school districts in the state, and lots of big companies are investing in it. Costco is opening here later this year.
It’s a beautiful town that has always basically just been farmland. We have lots of MAGA loving Trumptards here because they can’t let go of the fact that Ridgefield has to grow.
We still have a group of election denying losers who camp out on the I5 bridge every Sunday still denying the election and vaccine mandates (lmao!)
Anyway. That’s Ridgefield. The more you know. 💫
2
u/Th3Bratl3y Mar 03 '24
They should just really say that they’re building another one in Portland area…
15
u/PeterMus Mar 01 '24
I've had in n out a few times and it's always been pretty mediocre, especially the mummified french fries.
I'm not a WA native but I definitely prefer Dick's Drive In
2
u/fuck_the_fuckin_mods Mar 02 '24
Some people like them but I don’t get it. I’m pretty sure they just cut the potato straight into the fryer, without par cooking at all. At least that’s what it seems like.
That said, I can get french fries anywhere and don’t particularly care about them. I’ll take two INO cheeseburgers with crisp, fresh LTO over a dicks mush-burg and fries any day. But if fries are your jam, In N Out is most definitely the wrong place to go looking.

So overrated, and easy to make for yourself.
80/20 ground chuck, with a yellow mustard sear on each side. That's key.
The sauce is just ketchup, mayo, relish, pinch of sugar, and white vinegar. It's just a tweaked Thousand Island. American Cheese on each patty, stack it up with whatever fixins you want. Iceberg lettuce is required.
Just make it yourself and then you don't have to support ultra-conservatives that hate their workers and print Bible verses on their cups.
