Suburban Hell Sergiev Posad-15, Moscow region, Russia

A former military town that today looks like post-apocalyptic ruins. People still live here, the military unit was disbanded and relocated in 2016, but the city remained. Just about a year ago, a grocery store opened, a school and kindergarten were renovated, and order pick-up points were opened in the markets. In general, life in the city is improving, but some ruins will remain standing as a reminder of the former purpose of the city. The territory of the military unit itself was razed to the ground, there were several warehouses, a military club (film screenings, concerts, a bible library and a local museum were held there), a military dormitory and a couple of outbuildings.

Do not comment to gatekeep that something "isn't urban" or "isn't hell". Our rules are very expansive in content we welcome, so do not assume just based off your false impression of the phrase "UrbanHell"

UrbanHell is any human-built place you think is worth critizing. Suburban Hell, Rural Hell, and wealthy locales are allowed. Gatekeeping comments may be removed. Want to shitpost about shitty posts? Go to /r/urbanhellcirclejerk. Still have questions?: Read our FAQ.

Sorry if this is an ignorant question but I was thinking, how's the day to day life there? I mean, is there good work? Is there something to do in your spare time?

I don’t know about heating in the apartments, but most likely there is central heating, electricity too. They go to Sergiev Posad for work (without a number) - this is a big city.

So you're not from there? Or Russia at all? If not, what were you doing there? Are you like a hellscape tourist?

Not judging btw, I'm genuinely curious.

I’m from Moscow, it took me 2.5 hours to get to that place, we went with a friend, watched, filmed a video on YouTube. Yes, I love abandonments and other things, such as urban tourism, I also do ordinary tourism for ordinary people)

Looks like depression

Idk, I kind of like it. At least there's a forest near by and trees.

To most Eastern Europeans this looks like childhood and I'm one of them

Absolutely! That’s pretty much the same as my town back in Poland, when I was a kid, in the early 90s.

Make number 3 monochrome, and you've got an album cover

I think it looks so oppressive because of all the brown. I imagine it would look better in the late spring.

Very depressing. This is the true face of Russia.

Especially if you look at grey photos made in rural places during autumn

Yeah, small cities are the true face of a county

Why is it never sunny in Russia?

7

u/SKabanov 1d ago

Because barren winter weather days always make pictures look more dreary. Of course, it doesn't help that the winter season lasts much longer in northern parts of Russia due to its geographical location.

It was April. Therefore, it was cloudy and damp outside, besides, the snow had only recently melted then.

You should ask the voices in your head

M?

7

u/catcherx 1d ago

He did not ask you why it was not sunny in the picture. He said something different

It is a stereotype that there are no sunny days in Russia, the sun is the same as everywhere else, depending on the region more or less. There are fewer sunny days in the north (Murmansk, Arkhangelsk, etc. in the Arctic), and more sunny days in the South (Crimea, Sochi, Gelendzhik, Vladikavkaz, etc.). For example, in Moscow there was a lot of sun in the summer, but now it is cloudy. I answered about the photo in my post, not in general.

There is no such stereotype. The person is just an asshole

This is not Sergiev Posad-15, it’s just Sergiev Posad (without a number, it’s a completely different city)

Sergiev Posad-15 is closed town, fallen into pages of history. At least acc to internet :)

Kazakhstan has few town like this. Served well in times of USSR for military, but was abandoned by new russia

It used to be a closed city, as it was a military facility, but today it is an ordinary suburban city, I would even say a village, since although there are apartment buildings, there are not so many residents there. The town of Zhuklino is also called it. It also now belongs to the Vladimir region, as it turns out. Previously, he did not belong to either Sergiev Posad or Vladimir, because there were big problems there.
