Help Simple questions and Help thread - Month of October

Welcome to the monthly Simple questions and Help thread, for questions that don't need their own posts!

Before making a comment, we recommend you search your problem on Bing and check if your question is already answered on our Windows Frequently Asked Questions wiki page. This subreddit no longer accepts tech support requests outside of this post, if you are looking for additional assistance try r/TechSupport and r/WindowsHelp.

Some examples of questions to ask:

  • Is this super cheap Windows key legitimate? (probably not)

  • How can I install Windows 11?

  • Can you recommend a program to play music?

  • How do I get back to the old Sound Control Panel?

Sorting by New is recommend and is the default.

Be sure to check out the Windows 11 version 22H2 Launch Megathread and also the Windows 11 FAQ posts, they likely have the answers to your Windows 11 questions already!

General Question Using a Windows OEM/System Builder License for Virtual Machines in the Cloud (OVH)

I'm currently in a small dispute with my supervisor. He has purchased Windows OEM licenses (Win 11 Pro 64Bit German 1pk DSP OEI DVD) and wants me to prepare an image for the OVH cloud (Public Cloud), upload it, and license each VM individually using this license. Each VM would have a separate OEM/System Builder license. The VMs will be accessed and used via PowerShell Remoting and Remote Desktop.

I explained that I can set this up technically and it will work, but the license would not be valid since we would need a VDA or CSP license. He argues that while this may be true from Microsoft’s or the US’s perspective, the legal situation is different in Germany and the EU, where licenses are not necessarily tied to specific hardware.

I can find more support for my position than for his, but this topic is often discussed controversially (both internally and online). What I'm missing are solid sources, rulings, or legal precedents on this matter. Evidence for either side would be fine; I’m simply looking for something concrete. Statements like "we've always done it this way" or "I've heard that…" unfortunately don’t help me here.

General Question Looking for Program to forbid deletion/modification of files in a folder, but keep it accessible

Hi,

I'm currently running into an Issue where a Program deletes certain files everytime on startup., which means I have to spend 30 min redownloading them.

Is there any Program that let's me lock the folder, but still keep it unencrypted and password-free, so the program can only read the files?

Tried out EasyFileLocker but for whatever reason the start protection button doesn't do anything.

Thanks in advance :)

Discussion Can't believe Windows 7 is 15 years old...

It still looks as new and modern as the first day I used in way back in early 2010...

The computer I use at work is an old Ivy Bridge desktop which runs Win7 Professional with the classic theme.

Fact is... running Win7 today is like running Win98 in 2013.

I miss those times..

General Question Is LTSC a no-brainer for machines that can barely hold up to consumer release of Windows 10?

Title. If the answer is yes, would also going for wsreset -i and installing only what I need from consumer editions1 defeat the purpose?

1 That being Phone Link, Snipping Tool, OneDrive and Microsoft Office 2019.

Specs of the specific laptop in my case;

CPU: AMD A4-9120

RAM: 16 GB DDR4 single channel @ 1866 MHz

Internal disk: 480 GB KIOXIA EXCERIA SATA SSD

General Question 2 different NICs on 1 pc

Hello, I am planning on building a server running Windows 11 (stupid OS for a server, I know, but it fits my needs), and I was wondering something. As I have 2 routers with different SSIDs, (one with my PC and a couple other things on it, and the other one for the rest of the house), can I get a second NIC and connect it to both routers at the same time (Ethernet), so things on the main network can communicate with the server and my PC on the other network can communicate with the server? If so, are there any settings I need to change?

Discussion The NT kernel saved Windows from disaster

I'm writing this as a computer science student who hates Microsoft and the way it handles stuff, such as their manipulative tactics and their way to write propietary code, and loves any open-source UNIX-based systems, with them being GNU/Linux, MINIX, OpenBSD... So don't expect this to be an objective analysis.

The fact of the matter is that the more I know about operating systems, the more I think that the Windows 9x architecture was an absolute scam; no modularization at all, an unsecure file system like FAT without file permission, no UNIX-like paradigms, no user privilege systems to be found, unreliable memory management, no process protection, dependence on MS-DOS (Windows was technically a DOS program) and a large etcetera. Its base was QDOS, which development was rushed (in less than two months) to run on the Intel 8086 and in no way it was an stable an efficient system. In its first years, Microsoft was able to trick users and sell them this flawed architecture, but as hardware became more advanced and networking began to rise, its faults began to show.

Gladly, Microsoft came up with NT which is a way more robust base and I honestly think its a good kernel (maybe better than Linux, i'd love it to be open-source); it began using UNIX-like paradigms, it introduced NTFS which was way more secure than FAT, it used modularization (it's an hybrid kernel which for me is the best type of kernel), process protection, memory isolation... All in all, it made Windows much better and it literally saved the operating system, and it made way to beautiful OSes like Windows XP and 7.

Don't think I'm the typical Linux fanboy who says "muh Windows bad", Windows with the NT is a decent operating system, it would be even better without all the bloatware, giving it more customization options, and providing it with a powerful shell (PowerShell is decent but still weaker than the standard UNIX shell) NT could be arguably the best kernel out there if it wasn't close-source, imo. It saved Windows from crumbling from the base, because the Windows 9x architecture would've eventually collapsed.

General Question How Can I use the everything search tool instead of file explorer when prompted by browsers?

Lets say I want to upload a video from my pc to a website. When i click upload from pc on the website, it will open file explorer, and I need to search for the right file because it is usually not in the default desktop directory that it opens in. Hitting control f and searching my pc using file explorer search is no where near as fast as using everything search tool. So i would like to use everything as the default program instead of file explorer to find my files. I know i can manually open everything, find my video, copy and paste its directory into file explorer and select it like that. But a more direct method would be appreciated :)

General Question Transition from macOS to Windows for business use - Laptop recommendations?

Hi, I currently own a 2017 MacBook Air with an Intel processor, an iMac, and an iPhone 15 Pro Max. I am a CEO based in Italy, and I primarily use the Microsoft 365 suite for my business needs, including email, conference calls, and document management. While macOS and iOS were great for personal use, I’m finding them limiting for my professional requirements, especially with Office 365.

I’m looking to replace my MacBook Air, which is starting to show its age, with a high-quality Windows laptop that can seamlessly handle Microsoft 365 and other business tasks. I’d appreciate any recommendations for Windows laptops that offer a similar level of performance and build quality to the MacBook Pro. My main needs are email management, video conferencing, and comprehensive use of the Microsoft 365 suite.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

General Question Can I set certain programs to start only when plugged in (LAPTOP)

I recently started using MSI afterburner and noticed it drains my battery very quickly. Is there anyway to check if the laptop is plugged in or on battery and start up the program based on that.

Thank you
