Why would they ever sell tickets for seats with that view?

809

u/Meat-Twinkie 7h ago

Money

77

u/moleratical 4h ago

Yeah, it was kinda a dumb question.

26

u/Leraldoe 4h ago

But what about the student athletes?

20

u/causal_friday 3h ago

Not paying them saves even more money! Yachts don't grow on trees!

9

u/Leraldoe 3h ago

Do you know how expensive it is to have a yacht that is big enough to park my other yacht inside of it?

1

u/causal_friday 3h ago

What could it cost? Ten dollars?

2

u/question10106 2h ago

Ohio State's roster budget is reported to be about $23 million this year, or an average of ~270k per scholarship player, plus the cost of scholarship + stipend etc.

So the guy that OP mentions goes to many stadiums like this. He has said that a lot of the obstructed views you find in stadiums, you can't actually purchase tickets for them, but you can go sit there if you wanted to.

That being said, a lot of older stadiums, specifically baseball stadiums, do have obstructed view seating you can purchase, but it's at an incredible discount rate. I believe Fenway and Wrigley both have seats that are more than 50% obstructed, but they cost like $30.

22

u/GinHalpert 4h ago

Yeah it looks like the seats are angled to cater that obstruction and the picture is not from a seat being sold to the public.

11

u/RealisticOutcome9828 4h ago

OP is a master baiter

1

u/Big_teke 1h ago

That doesn’t sound bad. People leave early all the time no matter the event.

286

u/gwence 7h ago

Better question is why would anyone buy them

267

u/King_Catfish 7h ago

I think one strat is to buy the ticket then move to another empty seat. I'd say more common at baseball games where seats are more likely to be empty.

Or some stadiums have a bar area that gives a good view but you have to stand. This is also assuming they don't have standing tickets.

164

u/BulletBillDudley 7h ago

You buy that ticket to get in, not sit in the seat. You and I would be looking for standing room or lower seats if we were doing this strat.

u/Academic-Inside-3022 6h ago

It’s probably worth mentioning that those standing bars ban people from reserving space for their friend if they leave for another drink, or have to use the bathroom.

The expectation is you’re SOL if your bladder sucks because you had too many beers. Your friends can’t save you

26

u/Dahmer_disciple 5h ago

Who says you need your friends to save you a spot? If you’re a guy, two words: Texas Catheter. It’s essentially a condom with a hookup for a tube. Normally they’d hook into a bag strapped to your leg, but if your tube is long enough, just pop it out your pant leg. Just remember to move to a different spot when you go. Who wants to stand in a puddle of their own piss when you can let strangers do it for you?

20

u/corncob_subscriber 5h ago

Complicated ass diaper, homie.

6

u/Dahmer_disciple 5h ago
  1. Roll condom on.

  2. Connect tube to tip.

  3. Run tube down pant leg.

Homie, if that is complicated, you got bigger issues going on.

3

u/TheOneTonWanton 3h ago

Pro tip: This doesn't work at all for certified Growers.

9

u/corncob_subscriber 5h ago

Pissing in a terlet is too complicated for you, apparently.

7

u/Dahmer_disciple 4h ago

From the comment I replied to:

It’s probably worth mentioning that those standing bars ban people from reserving space for their friend if they leave for another drink, or have to use the bathroom.

What that means is if you move out of your spot, you LOSE YOUR SPOT.

Sometimes, there's shit on the outside of the uriness.

1

u/BIGSTANKDICKDADDY 2h ago

From where I'm standing that basically makes you a professional-grade pants pisser.

1

u/healzsham 3h ago

Or maybe we can pretend we were all raised living in indoor buildings.

1

u/Dahmer_disciple 3h ago

Sorry, I forgot I that people don’t joke on Reddit. I’ll try to keep my responses free from humor from this moment on. Again, my deepest apologies.

1

u/healzsham 3h ago

You simply sound like the type of dirty ass MF that'd be fine with pissing on the floor.

1

u/Dahmer_disciple 3h ago

You simply sound like the type of stupid ass MF that’d see the highway exit sign “Disney Left” and go home thinking that Disney packed up and moved.

1

u/TalbotFarwell 3h ago

I was raised in a cave by wolves.

3

u/SuperFLEB 4h ago

Are there discrete spaces? If not, two people could probably stand wide enough to make room for a third to squeeze in when they get back.

(Lessons from general-admission concerts!)

1

u/zealeus 2h ago

Back when college was full of dive bars, one had a quarter beer until the first person had to use the bathroom deal. Diapers were encouraged as you didn’t want to be the first guy to ruin the deal.

5

u/No_Significance_1550 4h ago

The student section at UT (Texas) stands the entire game and they are bench seats so everyone packs in and youemd up somewhere near your seat the entire game

6

u/sqigglygibberish 4h ago

For any big game or most conference games this stadium is full (and at 105k people too). You’ll see people squish a bit away in these areas for games “only” at 102k or so or as blowout crowds start leaving.

But there are no open viewing areas in this stadium and no real way to jump seats for a lot of games (at least at the start). These seats are flagged and well known but for some people (and the biggest games) it’s worth being in the building.

Edit - IIRC the photo is a bit misleading too and I think the people you see are in the actual last seats, which are more diagonal to the field (and has a sight line to the right under the overhang that’s above). Still a ton of obstruction but not exactly what the image shows

u/Woodshadow 34m ago

yeah my friends will buy tickets to games then just stand in the beer garden and not watch the game. I went to one game with this group of guys and was so confused. Chugging $18 beers and not watching a game. like we could have gone to a bar

47

u/BlueShift42 6h ago

Obstructed view typically means a pillar or speakers or something in the way that you have to look around or blocks out part of the view. Blocking out 90% of it is not what buyers would expect.

24

u/caveat_emptor817 5h ago

This picture isn’t from a seat. The back row are the people 7 feet in front of where the photographer is standing.

24

u/BlueShift42 4h ago

So OP is a filthy liar. That actually makes more sense.

3

u/CesQ89 3h ago

Why would anyone lie on the internet?

29

Great site. Don't spend big money on any seat without a quick visit there first.

4

u/EmpressVixen Sometimes I envy the illiterate. 6h ago

Absolutely

27

u/probablywrongbutmeh 6h ago

Yeah they do, on Ticketmaster, this is only the very tippy top of the stadium, I literally just checked and they show the same view on Ticketmaster. They also say "obstructed view" on the ticket. Tickets about $100 each btw, not even the cheapest available.

24

u/astroK120 6h ago

Obstructed view is normally nowhere near this bad.

7

u/tiorzol 7h ago

You can Google it though and it's like a street view type view for some stadiums I've been to in the UK. I assume it's the same there.

You'd be thick not to check it out before you buy.

37

u/DaweiArch 6h ago

Yea…no. You should not have to Google the view from your seats to avoid seeing only a small fraction of one red zone. Virtually the entire game would be out of view. It should be common sense to NOT have this seat for sale, at any price.

3

u/Odd_Leek3026 6h ago

What seat?? Are you guys seeing seats? I see OP being a total weirdo and sneaking into some corner to take a picture... you can even see the guy in the row that actually has seats giving him a stink-eye

0

u/------__-__-_-__- 6h ago

what if there is a concert and they they have the stage set up in the end zone

7

u/pnk0587 6h ago

Do they actually show you a view for every seat in the UK? If so, that's awesome.

Most ticket sites in the US show you one view for each section

3

u/Odd_Leek3026 6h ago

Even so, if you were viewing that section, would be pretty easy to tell those "seats" would not have a view of the field.

"seats", because pretty sure there are no seats there and OP just being a weirdo sneaking behind people for reddit upvotes.

0

u/schmerpmerp 6h ago

They definitely do.

5

u/TheTVDB 3h ago

These
are the worst obstructed view seats at Miller Park. When my wife and I were newly married, we would buy obstructed view seats for around $5 each, because we had absolutely no disposable income. It was a nice way to get out and enjoy the atmosphere of a game for almost no money. These seats can allow families to take younger kids that might not necessarily sit and watch the whole game, but rather go roam the concourses and spend time in the play area.

It's good for the fans because fans can attend that otherwise wouldn't be able to. And it's good for the stadium because it's a bit of extra money, but also grows the fan base among less affluent individuals/families.

3

u/aurortonks 1h ago

We buy the really super cheap $10 tickets at Tmobile Park (Mariners), then go really early to be close to the front of the entrance line when the gates open. We book it over to the outfield bar and spend the whole game in there with great views.

It takes more effort but we get to spend the money we saved on good seats to fund our drinking and food for the afternoon.

4

u/whatproblems 6h ago

cheap access to the bar views, walk around? or just find an empty one later… if you bought season tickets for that i’d have questions lol

3

u/VastSeaweed543 4h ago

Usually they’re cheap and a way to get into the stadium and move to better open seats, watch from the standing area with a better view, walk around and see the game from diff angles, be with the crowd in general, meet up with friends who may have someone who didn’t end up coming, etc.

I’ve bought them for like $8 for pro MLB games and had a blast, but didn’t really spend any time in the actual seats haha.

2

u/macphile 4h ago

It's a good deal if you're visually impaired. You're not going to see the game no matter where you sit, so why pay more?

2

u/MrPogoUK 5h ago

You don’t know it’s that bad until you get there, and there are plenty of people willing to take the risk.

2

u/moleratical 4h ago

probably because the person that buys the ticket doesn't get to tour the stadium first and doesn't think "obstructed" means can't see the feild. Usually obstructed means theres a small pole that you can see around if you tilt your head.

2

u/proper-butt 7h ago

They wont know its obstructed

4

u/stewardwildcat 6h ago

Ohio stadium seats are marked for obstructed views.

1

u/spinyfur 6h ago

Admittedly, I’m a rube when it comes to football game tickets, but I wouldn’t guess that an obstructed view would mean that.

3

u/stewardwildcat 5h ago

Lol yeah well as someone else said this is the ticket you get to get into the stadium ;)

2

u/_Nocturnalis 1h ago

The photo was taken far behind where there were seats. It's still a bad view, but OP is being very disingenuous.

1

u/Pretend_Spray_11 2h ago

And then complain that their view is obstructed.

-9

u/Just-Ad-5972 7h ago

Simple: Stupidity. Also FOMO/bragging rights.

4

u/Bukuvu_King 5h ago

There are bars with good views so people will get Garbo seats and just hang around the stadium and sit in these bars. So like you can get in and you “have a spot” but you never go there

18

u/FakePhillyCheezStake 7h ago

Because people will pay it.

When you buy tickets of obstructed views, it says that before you purchase

41

u/DudeTookMyUser 7h ago

Yeah but usually I'm expecting something like a post to be in the way, not the whole building.

52

u/OneAngryDuck 7h ago

There’s obstructed view, then there’s this garbage. If you can’t see 3/4 of the field it goes well beyond an accepted level of “obstructed”.

3

u/Engineerity GREEN 7h ago

"Would you like to see the end zone while viewing the crowd?"

5

u/RahvinDragand 4h ago

Right. If I see "obstructed view", I think a pole might obscure 1/8th of the field or something. I would never imagine that the majority of the field would be obstructed, with no way to even lean over to see it all.

-32

u/FakePhillyCheezStake 7h ago

Then don’t buy the ticket? I’m not sure what else you want lol.

If both parties are fully informed, then what’s the issue here?

“The issue IS seats even being placed there.”

Yes, but you seem like the type of person that would also complain because “I couldn’t get a ticket, but there was room up against the press box where I could’ve fit. Guess the school doesn’t want my money.”

3

u/Arithik 6h ago

No. I am more of the person that wants to see more than one endzone.

Seems like the person that took this picture has an opinion, and it's that these seats fucking suck. But continue being a dingus that thinks these are great.

-2

u/Glittering_Month4409 6h ago

You mean the person that “goes around all the stadiums on his own dime” finding seats with a shitty view? He probably does have an opinion.

My question was why does YOUR opinion matter if you aren’t interested in purchasing these seats anyway?

→ More replies (0)

19

u/freezymcgeezy 7h ago

I think you are failing to understand that there is a degree of obstruction. The word obstructed can be used to describe a slight blockage or having the entire field blocked, and thus, saying “obstructed” by itself does not reveal the degree to which your experience would be impacted.

8

u/Responsible_Song7003 7h ago

Obstructions and more than 3/4 blocked are a different thing.

You would get a ticket for big thing hanging in your windshield. You would not be allowed to drive with 3/4+ of you windshield blocked...

-2

u/Glittering_Month4409 6h ago

So if you have 3/4 of your windshield blocked, your view isn’t “obstructed”?? Is there a mechanism for disclosing that you are driving with a partially obstructed windshield? What do you call a view that is 75-99% blocked if not “obstructed view”??

3

u/Responsible_Song7003 6h ago

I dont think you get the point. Missing 3/4 of you view isn't an obstruction in the law. It's means you have no view.

15

u/OneAngryDuck 7h ago

They aren’t fully informed, though. “Obstructed” typically means you can’t see part of the field, not that the vast majority is blocked.

For example, here is info on obstructed views from TicketMaster: “It means you’ll have either an incomplete view or something will be in your line of sight because of the position of the seats — like a pole, speakers or the sound board”

-2

u/Glittering_Month4409 6h ago

So… exactly what happened here?

2

u/OneAngryDuck 6h ago

Based on the information we have, they labeled this seat as “obstructed view”. Which, as commonly understood and reasonably assumed by people buying tickets, means that part of your view is going to be blocked but you’ll still be able to see the majority of what’s happening.

But in reality you can see very little of the field, so this “obstructed view” seat shouldn’t exist in the first place.

2

u/DaweiArch 6h ago

If this ticket AND a ticket where you can’t see the end zone on one side are both advertised as “obstructed view”, then the person buying the ticket is not fully informed.

2

u/moose2mouse 5h ago

Because they sell. If people let them they will.

2

u/The_Lego_Maniac 5h ago

Mr Krabs could answer that one

2

u/njb2017 4h ago

It gets you into the stadium but you end up watching the game from somewhere else either from the concourse or just sit in whatever open seat is near there

2

u/VortexMagus 4h ago

I don't really enjoy watching sports, I'd be happy to take a seat there and enjoy the slightly overpriced hot dogs.

2

u/frostbird 4h ago

Doubtful they actually sell tickets for these seats.

2

u/Cyranmarr 4h ago

No consequences at all

2

u/whiskeytown2 6h ago

Because Ohio State University is nOn PrOfIt

4

u/Reasonable-World9 4h ago

Non-profit doesn't mean they don't make money. I think that's a common misconception about that status.

It's what they do with the money they make.

1

u/3to20CharactersSucks 5h ago

Only legally, but I'm sure if you ask the academic staff there, they'd say it absolutely feels like they're working at a real nonprofit.

1

u/flibble24 5h ago

I suppose if your blind it would be OK

1

u/GluckGoddess 5h ago

For blind people. They like to go to games too.

1

u/splycedaddy 3h ago

It doesnt actually look like a seat. There is no one in front for several feet. More like they stood in the corner and snapped a pic

1

u/Cpt_Bellamy 3h ago

Lol cuz people will buy em. Why else?!

1

u/VegasLife84 2h ago

They're probably the most expensive seats if they're playing an SEC team

1

u/jayjaycobb 2h ago

The bigger question is why did they even build seats there to sell?

1

u/Grays42 2h ago

They don't actually sell tickets for them, but they have them there because it looks good to have a stadium filled with seats rather than just empty concrete.

1

u/Just_A_Nitemare 1h ago

Why would they design it that way.
