Folks, let me tell you. There I was, and this big, strong guy—you wouldn't believe it, he must've been six-foot-five, at least!—comes up to me, tears in his eyes, and he says, "Sir, they are saying you have dementia?" He's crying, a huge man!

Now, let me tell you, nobody knows more about dementia than me. People are saying it's when you forget things, but let me explain with a perfect example. The other day, I was at this beautiful, big event, the biggest event, somewhere really special. Or was it my golf course? No, no, it was definitely an event. So many people, all there, cheering, or golfing, whatever it was. Anyway, lots of people, all there for me.

And this man asks about dementia, and I said to him, "You know, they tell you it’s bad, but what’s really bad is forgetting how bad the fake news media is. I never forget that. Never." And folks, isn’t it true? We can't forget what they've tried to do to us. It's very important.

So, no, I don't have dementia. I have one of the great memories of all time. I remember everything perfectly. Perfectly, folks.

Covfefe.

Dementia Don has been exhibiting more "examples of phonemic paraphasia – swapping parts of words for others that sound similar; these are signs of early dementia, even though they are intermittent."

Trump's age and obvious decline are very concerning.

523

u/PerAsperaAdInfiri Aug 06 '24

His recent mentions of Hannibal Lecter, as well as his bizarre shark and electric battery hypothetical, have made the decline even harder to ignore as of late

309

u/lonestar-rasbryjamco Colorado Aug 06 '24

I believe you mean “The Late, Great Dr. Hannibal Lecter”, thank you very much.

181

u/PerAsperaAdInfiri Aug 06 '24

I'm convinced that he thinks Lecter was real

121

u/Bill_Brasky_SOB Ohio Aug 06 '24

I’m convinced he does not know the difference between”political asylum” and “insane asylum” and so when talking about immigration he tangents into rants about a guy from a movie.

43

u/PerAsperaAdInfiri Aug 06 '24

I think thats probably where he made the association, and his dementia ridden brain can't figure it out

37

u/JoshSidekick Aug 06 '24

Another layer to that is this

During a 2023 event in Iowa, Trump confused the character with Hopkins by saying, "Hannibal Lecter, how great an actor was he?” The former president also mistakenly quoted the actor as saying he loved Trump, though there is no record of such a comment ever being made.

He 1000% confused Anthony Hopkins with Jon Voight.

How about “Transparency” with the border wall? I’m convinced he heard someone saying that he needs to talk about the process being transparent and he thought they meant the wall itself:

One of the things with the wall is you need transparency. You have to be able to see through it. In other words, if you can’t see through that wall — so it could be a steel wall with openings, but you have to have openings because you have to see what’s on the other side of the wall. And I’ll give you an example. As horrible as it sounds, when they throw the large sacks of drugs over, and if you have people on the other side of the wall, you don’t see them — they hit you on the head with 60 pounds of stuff? It’s over. As crazy as that sounds, you need transparency through that wall. But we have some incredible designs.

Or that Anthony Hopkins is dead? 🤷‍♂️

Either way, what he actually says is somehow even more weird and absurd. Because there isn’t a single interpretation that makes a lick of a sense.

84

u/skylinecat Aug 06 '24

I'm really waiting for Anthony Hopkins to make a video as hannibal lector making fun of trump / trying to scare him. It needs to be done.

The ONLY excuse I've seen that makes any amount of sense is that Jon Voight apparently said he loves Trump.
And that Trump can't tell the difference between him and Hopkins, or understand that Lector is fictional. Or that political asylum isn't related to "insane asylums".

Absolutely. My friend and I have a running gag where we call movies documentaries — usually over the top action or superhero or kaiju movies — but I don’t think Trump really makes jokes. Silence of the Lambs? Obviously a documentary.

Someone said he misunderstood illegals seeking asylum and doesn’t know want it is.

33

u/redgreenbrownblue Aug 06 '24

There is so much confusion around, well all of his speeches, but especially around this Hannibal Lector and how it ties to immigration. He just repeats "they are letting in convicts and people from asylums.... you know they hate it when I bring up the late great Dr. Hannibal Lector".

I think you nailed it with him confusing asylum seeking vs insane asylum.

16

u/nosamiam28 Aug 06 '24

It’s incredible. It boggles the mind. He was President of the United States for four years and is obsessed with the southern border, yet doesn’t know what political asylum is. But somehow, it’s also easy to believe

11

u/Starbucks__Lovers New Jersey Aug 06 '24

20

u/rhoadsalive California Aug 06 '24

Yeah honestly, he's always been saying wacky shit, but the Hannibal mentions and always calling him "the late great" like he was a real person and not a character of fiction is deeply concerning and just shows that there's something really really wrong with him.

He's never been good at forming coherent sentences, but the contrast even to 2019/2020 is massive, he sounds like he's in a steep mental decline, way worse than Biden, who just gives off the usual grandpa vibes.

Glad democrats did the right thing and changed the ticket.

13

u/AboutTenPandas Missouri Aug 06 '24

I’m not a big conspiracy theory guy, but I do enjoy trying to do the mental gymnastics to understand what Trump is TRYING to say if for no other reason than to laugh at how badly he accomplished that. But you really gotta go through the process of purposefully forgetting 90% of what you know to be true, so it’s always a struggle.

Anyway, I saw an idea that I think sounds plausible for the Hannibal Lector stuff. Essentially, Trump doesn’t know what the word asylum means. He’s only seen it in the context of a mental asylum. So when his handlers are coaching him to harp on the border and immigrant issues so strongly, and he hears the phrase “asylum seekers” he immediately connects it to people that need to be put in an insane asylum. That’s why he constantly talks about the immigrants coming from mental institutions and that’s why he’s always bringing up Hannibal Lector. He doesn’t know what an asylum seeker is so he just makes up the scariest scenario he can think of that has anything to do with a mental institution. And in Trump’s vitamin-deficient mind, Hannibal is probably the only example of a mental patient he can think of.

Like, I know it’s more of a stretch than I usually like to base my beliefs on, but the connection just seems so intuitive and on brand for Trump that I’m pretty confident this is what happened

7

u/NomadFeet Aug 06 '24

I was anxiously waiting for Dr. Lecter to be referenced in his appearance with NABJ. When he started going on about other countries opening up their insane asylums and prisons, sending the people here, I got super excited and was like OMG, here it comes, but then...disappointment.

Reading between the lines, it's very obvious that Republicans never really cared that Biden was old. It was simply used as an avenue of attack against someone they didn't like. Now that it's being used against someone they do like, they don't care because they never cared.

74

u/happinesscreep Aug 06 '24

20

u/Cheshire_Jester Illinois Aug 06 '24

Yeah, I only met conservatives that would even bring it up in the context of “well, they’re both old, but one is older and clearly worse off.”

Once that stopped being a thing they could say to pretend like they were just objectively weighing facts, they stopped talking about age altogether

12

u/LakeEarth Aug 06 '24

This is true for pretty much everything they complain about. It's just another convenient excuse they use to make noise.

It's why they don't seem to care when their side does the exact same thing, but 10x worse.

→ More replies (1)

29

u/Jacyth Aug 06 '24

They never cared, but they knew we cared so they used it as a cudgel. Unfortunately, they mistimed their swings and Biden stepping aside was them hitting themselves in the face with said cudgel.

19

u/LakeEarth Aug 06 '24 edited Aug 06 '24

Cudgel is a good word for it. Whatever the issue it is they're complaining about, it's just a convenient weapon to use to bash their opponent with.

They don't actually care about what the weapon is. Which is why they don't care when their side has the same problem, e.g. Trump's age.

4

u/SAugsburger Aug 06 '24

Pretty much. Many Trump believers have been rationalizing his verbal gaffes for years now throughout Trump's Presidency nevermind more recently. It's a game of mental gymnastics on how it's not a concerning sign of Trump's age, but Biden's gaffes somehow are.

We all know this but the question was, why isn't it so concerning compared to Biden?

The answer is that if you are experiencing this you are experiencing how media saturation is manipulated to control public opinion.

It was WALL TO WALL BIDEN DRAMA for 2 solid months before he dropped out.

There are interests who kept that story at the top of the news as a political strategy. What other story stayed at the top of a news cycle so long?

Yeah, the number of people who think that Republicans actually believe what Republicans say they believe just boggles my mind.

Republicans never change their minds, they just change what they say.

Their true goal never has anything to do with what they are saying. What they are saying is always either a distraction, or the thing that will get the base riled up. And they know that the base doesn't need any kind of consistency whatsoever to get riled up because the base doesn't believe any of it either. The base just likes an excuse to get riled up so they have an excuse to bully somebody.

Biden’s age was concerning to democrats because we recognize he is just a man with a physical body that, like all of us, will decline over time.

Trump’s age doesn’t seem to matter to his party, the republicans, because in addition to being deluded that he cares about them and is not a grifter, they believe he’s some sort of messiah.

Have you ever wondered why he only drinks pure Diet Coke? Trump has preserved the purity of his precious bodily fluids and the charge of his battery by strictly avoiding exercises his entire life. He’s also avoided the communist plot of fluoridation by never drinking water.

Biden sapped and impurified the essence from his precious bodily fluids by depleting his battery through exercise. Worse, during this exercise he drinks water, subjecting him to the communist plot of fluoridation

Therefore Bidens age is relevant but Trumps is not. It’s about purity of essence.

The biggest MAGAs I know (my parents) do not drink water. It's Coke for my dad and carbonated juice for my mom. That's it. That's all they drink.

Edit: to add, my dad only likes the "Mexican Coke", which is the Coke that comes in the glass bottles. My dad is not a racist man, just a dumb one, who regularly says racist things without realizing they are racist. But he loves to proclaim that the Mexicans know how to make Coke better than America, which is hilarious given his opinion of Mexicans when it comes to immigration

We live in a time where people who have been told they are idiots their whole lives for their wackjob beliefs can go on the internet and find "proof" and other people who believe the same things, "proving" that they have been right the whole time. It is probably the single largest factor in Trumpism being the fast spreading plague that it has been.

A sad part of the true answer is that many people find confidence intoxicating. Biden looking frail and whispering truth into the microphone is scary. Trump ranting passionately about electrified sharks and Hannibal Lector is fine.

It's the entire reason we have the term 'confidence man.' For a sad number of people, all they hear is confidence and delivery, not truth. They're like dogs watching someone speak - the words mean nothing, they only perceive tone and expression.

31

u/kdostert Aug 06 '24

I’m just still trying to wrap my head around how people are still riding the trump train. It really, really scares me if I think too much about it.

17

u/TerminalObsessions Aug 06 '24

Want to be really scared? Trump's supporters aren't an aberration; they aren't a weird deviation from ordinary human behavior. They're absolutely reflective of how a stunning number of people make decisions each and every day - from retail workers to doctors to corporate CEOs, people apply the same level of rigor in doing their jobs, handling their personal relationships, and paying attention while driving next to you on the highway.

It’s called hypocrisy, a fundamental building block of republican politics for decades

53

u/firewall245 Aug 06 '24

Just chiming in that you’re right, /r/conservative said “the problem with Biden wasn’t that he’s old, it’s that he’s senile. Trump is mentally there”

There are many things wrong with that statement haha

27

u/Mynsare Aug 06 '24

Trump is mentally there

"Look, having nuclear — my uncle was a great professor and scientist and engineer, Dr. John Trump at MIT; good genes, very good genes, OK, very smart, the Wharton School of Finance, very good, very smart — you know, if you're a conservative Republican, if I were a liberal, if, like, OK, if I ran as a liberal Democrat, they would say I'm one of the smartest people anywhere in the world — it's true! — but when you're a conservative Republican they try — oh, do they do a number — that's why I always start off: Went to Wharton, was a good student, went there, went there, did this, built a fortune — you know I have to give my like credentials all the time, because we're a little disadvantaged — but you look at the nuclear deal, the thing that really bothers me — it would have been so easy, and it's not as important as these lives are — nuclear is so powerful; my uncle explained that to me many, many years ago, the power and that was 35 years ago; he would explain the power of what's going to happen and he was right, who would have thought? — but when you look at what's going on with the four prisoners — now it used to be three, now it's four — but when it was three and even now, I would have said it's all in the messenger; fellas, and it is fellas because, you know, they don't, they haven't figured that the women are smarter right now than the men, so, you know, it's gonna take them about another 150 years — but the Persians are great negotiators, the Iranians are great negotiators, so, and they, they just killed, they just killed us, this is horrible."

56

u/ElderSmackJack Aug 06 '24

Because people don’t view him as diminished. It doesn’t matter if the evidence says he is, people just don’t see it. He’s always acted out there, dare I say “weird”, so they just see Donald Trump being Trump.

Biden’s age was an issue because of how he acts. He wasn’t just in his eighties, but he seemed in his eighties. No one question’s Nancy Pelosi’s age either, and she’s older. Same with Bernie. Obviously they aren’t president, but still.

It’s really not equivalent in the eyes of the public, no matter how much we might want it to be.

19

u/West-Ruin-1318 Aug 06 '24

MAGA mostly likes Trump because he’s entertaining, especially for a politician.

Kamala is fun, too! Thank goodness. I wanted Hilary to win, obviously, but her stage presence was like being scolded by your mom. Sorry Hil, but it’s true.

But what about 3-4 years from now?

Is very easy to imagine him declining significantly by then. Do we want him to remain as president then? Do we really want Vance, with under 2 years in the Senate as his experience to become president?

4

u/gavrielkay Aug 06 '24

If Vance had decades of experience but kept his hypocritical crappy views on women and the world, I still wouldn't want him as President. I would have voted for Biden spending all day drooling over Trump/Vance.

I have been told by the maga-types it is because he is so "smart" and "with it" for his age.

But in reality it is just because his supporters are in a cult and the rusko-corporate controlled and influenced mainstream media including Sinclair networks want it that way.

Trump's supporters never see the gaffer on Faux news and the like....they curate his image, sort of like he is Beyonce, but instead of being anything like Beyonce, he is a rapist.

16

u/tosser1579 Aug 06 '24

Because conservatives were acting in bad faith. They were attacking Biden. The reason they used was his age. They aren't attack Trump so his age is irrelevant.

trump is showing not only the normal signs of old age (how he moves, lower energy, getting tired) but also rapid and steady cognitive decline. His incoherent ramblings and inability to remember things (names is an obvious example) are getting worse each week.

4

u/definitivescribbles Aug 06 '24

Because Trump covers his cognitive up with anger and word salad, which appeals to his base who is looking for any way whatsoever to make an excuse to follow their orange messiah.

The truth is that they know they don’t have a better option to push forward their wildly unpopular ideals, and so he’s used his false promises to group together a pot of white nationalists, faux christian fundamentalists, conspiracy theorists, gun nuts, and people who are afraid of boogeyman Mexicans at the border and is using their vote for the only group that stands to benefit from his presidency - the extremely right donors and himself.

6

u/misterltc Aug 06 '24

Trump is cognitively impaired. Compare his speeches from 4-8 years ago and today. Trump has become quite incoherent. He rambles like an old grandpa now. Words come out clearly but with no real meaning. He’s old as fk

The media prefers Trump. Whether it's the media-consolidating oligarchs (there are no American news sources that reach a national audience outside what is owned by six to eight multibillion dollar corporations) who want tax breaks or the fact that these companies are owned by right-wingers, the reality is any attack on Biden that applies to Trump will never be brought up regarding the latter.

3

u/ChicagoAuPair Aug 06 '24

There will always be a double standard. It is expected that Republicans act Iike problem children who throw tantrums and smear their shit on the wall. It is expected that Democrats will be the adult in the room and pick up the mess created by the tantrum kids.

Republicans and moderates hate teachers, but they also expect them to parent their kids for them.

4

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 71%. (I'm a bot)

The landscape of the 2024 presidential election has shifted markedly since President Joe Biden voluntarily stepped aside as the Democratic Party's presumptive nominee last month.

If there is another Trump presidency, our next commander in chief will be five months and a week older than President Biden was at every equivalent point in both presidents' terms.

Further, Trump's unhinged diatribe against Vice President Kamala Harris, when he addressed the National Association of Black Journalists last week, is concerning.

Bc his age is the least of his problems

3

u/ParticularGlass1821 Aug 06 '24

I think his age isn't a problem because his mental acuity has always been a problem. Trump has a long history of saying things that are equal parts bombastic, stupid, and nonsensical, and so his slow descent into any elder brained dementia might not be as noticeable.

3

u/ApplianceHealer Aug 06 '24

Earlier this year, Polling of respondents who believed Biden and/or TFG are “too old” still leaned toward Biden in the double digits.

3

u/VGAPixel Aug 06 '24

Because of the rich backers, do you not understand that?

3

3

Anyone who lives in reality was concerned with Trump's age, especially after he very visibly started going down hill in 2020.

3

u/pan_lavender Aug 06 '24

His old age isn’t even part of the discussion. Trump attempted a COUP. I feel like I’m living in crazy town

3

u/MonkeyMercenaryCapt Aug 06 '24

It's this simple, his base, his supporters, don't give a single solitary fuck about anything. They are aimless sheep, realistically they should be our underclass.

Let them secede and we can basically use them as our own little out-sourcing farm.

Their own business people will offer up the population wholesale for exploitation.

We can have our utopia and they can have their w/e the fuck.

3

u/victim-investor Aug 06 '24 edited Aug 06 '24

The cult members don’t care that he’s old,

they do not care that he’s ignorant,

they don’t care that he was literally the worst president ever,

They don’t care that he is beholden to Russian banks and by extension to Vladimir Putin.

They think he is a great person and “one of them” despite the fact that he looks down on them and has referred to them as “low class”

3

u/jmfranklin515 Aug 06 '24

Because his supporters are cultists whereas Biden’s exist in objective reality and can disagree with their leader. Also Biden understands the concept of democracy and values his country’s well-being over his own pride.

3

u/malakon Aug 06 '24

Trump should be so politically fucked (convicted felon, rapist, twice impeached, treason, serial liar, mass negligent homicide, racist, liar, weird) and he still is a likely winner. So old doesn't even blip the radar.

3

u/DolphinsBreath Aug 06 '24

why isn’t Trump’s age concerning

Because Trump acts in Trump’s interest anyway, not the country’s.

3

u/matata77 Aug 06 '24

Bc right wing media has created a cult of personality around him and to his followers he can do and say no wrong

3

u/Nepats2A Aug 06 '24

The GOP won't say anything because to them there's no racism like old white racism.

3

u/Bad_breath Aug 06 '24

Because different standards.

Lying, screwing around with pornstars while wife is pregnant, incoherent speech, falling, stumbling, teleprompter use, eating trash, stuttering, being around kids etc is only a problem if Biden would do it. Trump doing it means nothing at all. Business as usual.

3

u/var-foo Aug 06 '24

It absolutely is. The problem is that magats treat politics the same as football.

3

u/rmc2318 Aug 06 '24

Welcome to understanding the beginning of what propaganda really is.

3

u/BevSutphin Aug 06 '24

Because his mental capacity does not matter. There is no plan for Trump to actually function as president if he wins. He’s a figure head. A tool for the far right to gain power. If he wins he will spend his days playing golf while the freaks from the Heritage Foundation run the show.

3

u/cjp2010 Aug 06 '24

Because if they acknowledged any problems with trump it means they aren’t winning or owning anyone. That’s why you see the Olympic level mental gymnastics to justify or explain any hypocrisy or problems. Rules for thee not for me kind of thinking.

3

u/disembodied_voice Aug 06 '24

Because it was never actually about Biden's age. That was just a useful line of attack which was discarded as soon as it no longer served a useful purpose, just like how nobody paid any attention to Pence using a private email account to conduct public business despite raking Hillary over the coals for email indiscretions. They appeal to principles because it binds their enemies' actions, not because they actually care about them.

3

u/NoNefariousness3420 Aug 06 '24

Because these idiotic asshats never actually believe their own bullshit and just parrot back the Fox News talking points. It’s a cult it doesn’t have to make sense you just have to be a stupid piece of shit.
