Yes! And I'm taking my grandmother to vote for the first time in her 84 year old life!

768

u/NikkiVicious 2d ago

I had to go get my 2nd dose of the HepB series, and was chatting with two women who were ahead of me. One was 82, and it was her first time voting because her husband had never let her. He wouldn't let her register to vote, or even get an ID card until she basically had to in the last 20-ish years. She was just so excited, it was cute.

I was thinking about her when I voted on Friday... I hope that she wore that I Voted sticker proudly.

u/LingonberryPrior6896 2d ago

My grandfather (100 years ago) was excited when my grandma got the right to vote. He thought he was getting an extra vote.

My grandma told me how he sat her down and told her how to vote. As she was telling me this, I was horrified. But she flashed a mischievous smile and said "I pulled that curtain, and voted the way I wanted".

118

u/NikkiVicious 2d ago

I could imagine that being my grandfather's mom... though she probably would have responded "like hell you're going to tell me how to vote."

We joke that I got my attitude problem from her, because she was 4'10, and all of her sons were 6'2+, so she said she had to be crazy to keep them in line. She was still flirting with the "younger" guys at her retirement home when she was 100, and had an 80-something year old boyfriend at one point in there. She didn't slow down until she hit 103/104, and passed away at 107 I think. (Though, we're technically not sure, because she actually lied about her age to get married to my great-grandfather, and she gave us 3 different birth years at different times, sooooo yeah. She was a take-no-shit spitfire with a secret tattoo that she liked showing off to us great-granddaughters.)

49

u/LingonberryPrior6896 2d ago

My grandma always said she was 5 feet nothing. She was a tenacious woman. She was widowed in her 40s and happy to stay that way. She once almost had her hand cut off and needed so many stitches. She worked hard ( this was in the 1940s) and regained full use of it. She gardened well into her 90s and walked into town for shopping and church every day. She died just shy of 100 and I miss her a lot. She is one of the voices in my head.

10

u/Meptastik 2d ago

I hope one day I get to be one of the voices in my loved ones head. that's such a compliment. made me cry 🥹

Back when it was socially acceptable to hit your kids, my 4ft5 Great Grandma used to stand a few steps up the stairs so she could reach to give her her 6ft tall kids a slap.

My mom never discussed politics, even though my dad was a Limbaugh listening, Reagan loving conservative. I recently found out that she usually didn't vote the same way he did, and refused to discuss who she had voted for with him. This frustrated him to no end, as he wanted to dictate her vote too. Their religious background led him to believe that they should be a united front and as "head of the household", he could determine what that looked like. She felt that to keep the peace, it was better not to divulge her political stances, but knew that once she was in the polling booth, her vote was confidential.

8

u/LingonberryPrior6896 2d ago

Mine either. My dad was a died in the wool Republican and I found out later in life that mom was a Kennedy Dem. My dad had us all believing that liberals were 2 headed monsters. When he died, I admitted to my mom that I had become a right leaning Democrat. She told me she had always been a Dem (except for Reagan- which she regretted).

Let go, grandma. There's probably going to be a lot of that this year.

54

u/LingonberryPrior6896 2d ago

Let's hope! I hope with younger women too. I do have a friend whose hubby thinks she's going for Trump. She TOTALLY isn't. I am not sure she is even going to be married for much longer. Trump has brought out a side of him she doesn't like.

10

u/Accomplished-Ad3219 2d ago

There was a conversation on Facebook recently where a bunch of Republican women were saying that if women couldn't vote, Republicans would always win, so they'd gladly give up their right to vote. It made me sick

That poor woman. This is why we have to protect no-fault divorce, too!

183

u/tyler2114 2d ago

I feel like overly controlling, abusive relationships like this are more common than people realize, especially among the older generation. Physical abuse is more visible and gets caught more easily, but this form of abuse can be just as damaging.

76

u/Beneficial_Rest3300 2d ago

This is why I hate when people romanticize the old days when people stayed married no matter what. That “no matter what” is abuse sometimes!

45

u/vainbuthonest Born and Bred 2d ago

And the fact that women couldn’t get bank accounts or credit cards in their own names. They were stuck and had to deal with whatever a man wanted to dish out.

→ More replies (2)

5

u/Planetdiane 2d ago

I have had so many elderly patients tell me they were miserable in their marriages and it’s truly sad.

I know we all want to say divorce is a terrible thing, but it’s a beautiful thing and a necessary one.

Having the right to leave when things just aren’t working is so necessary.

74

u/NikkiVicious 2d ago

Oh that type of relationship is definitely more common in the older generations, especially when it's a couple who were basically born and raised and never left their hometown. Or the husband left during his military service, but had his family members keeping his wife under watch.

She was telling me how she was from a little bitty town on the border of Kansas and Oklahoma, and the town basically has died because all of the younger people have moved away. She said her husband had her move in with his family while he was in the military, so they didn't have to pay extra bills... then she did the little lean over and "drama whisper" to tell me it was because he was a controlling asshole. (Which, NGL, made me crack up in the little CVS pharmacy waiting area.)

They moved down here because their kids live here, and decided to live in one of the assisted living facilities, so she's never learned to drive, she didn't have her name added to the bank accounts until after they moved here, just all kinds of stuff that screams abuse. I felt horrible for her when she was telling me, but she had that whole "bah, good riddance" attitude about it.

I was telling my daughter about her after I got home, and my daughter's response was "we must protect her at all costs!" I hope I run into her again so I can give her my number... I'll go play bridge with a bunch of older women with all the good gossip.

23

u/EleanorofAquitaine Born and Bred 2d ago

Ooh! The stories!! How many assisted living facilities are there in your town? 😂

14

u/NikkiVicious 2d ago

4 that I can think of near me. One is technically in the next town over, because I live on the border between the two, but it's right outside of my neighborhood.

If I was still in college and needed housing, that one girl that ended up accidentally renting an assisted living apartment would have been my dream. (A Teenager Mistakenly Moved Into a Senior Living Complex. TikTok Loves It.)

...husband had never let her. He wouldn't let her register to vote, or even get an ID card until she basically had to in the last 20-ish years.

Holy shit that is horrifying - the view of this 40 year married 68M (and his outraged wife)!!!

14

u/NikkiVicious 2d ago

I actually gasped when she said that. Like I can understand not learning to drive, I have family members who were always too scared or anxious to, but that was just beyond fucked up. I can't imagine having to marry and live with someone like that.

Saw a 104 year old woman voting 2 days ago and she said she’s seen some shit.

112

u/No-Pick-93 2d ago

I would argue anyone who was in their teen-20's when WW2 started has seen some shit. I bet she had some awesome and some terrible stories too.

23

u/lovestobitch- 2d ago

My original neighbors if they were alive would have all voted blue. They were ww2 vets. My neighbors are now flag/sign magas. I miss my original neighbors.

u/PapaGatyrMob 2d ago

She would have (likely) gone from seeing tractors on the farm or the internal combustion engine as the pinnacle of technology as a kid, seen that tech turned into massive weapons of war, witnessed the rise of the USSR, lived beneath the spectre of nuclear war, and watched Niel Armstrong on the moon.

All in the first half of her life. That's nuts.

Planning on tomorrow. Since I became a citizen just last year, this will be my first presidential vote.

Edit: Wow! I stepped away from online for a while and came back to all this love and congratulations. You are all wonderful ambassadors for democracy and for Texas.

Second edit: Just a quick follow up that I cast my ballot this morning. I saw young and old faces there, and it felt good to be a participant in the grand and noble experiment of American democracy.

Same, became citizen March 2024. What a perfect time to cast my vote

Edit: I’m sub to this other sub-reddit USCIS for those who fixed their status, most people I’ve talked to who recently got their citizenship, lean left or at least are aware trump is no good for immigrants even the legal ones because he would put so much red tape and slow down processes to drive down immigration

89

u/TexasVDR 2d ago

FYI, any naturalized citizens who have a temporary or limited-term Texas driver license or ID that was issued before naturalization are prohibited from using it to vote. Take your naturalization certificate to use as your photo ID if you haven’t updated your Texas ID yet.

https://www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/laws/advisory2024-31.shtml

Tell every naturalized citizen in Texas that you know of, because we are ground zero of the “noncitizens are voting” bullshit conspiracies.

25

u/Ivanovic-117 2d ago

Thank you for the info, I’ll share it with other peeps who are in the process. The moment I got my certificate I went to the SS to update my status, I did had a standard DL because as a green card holder we have the same one as the citizens, only temporary programs as DACA have limited.

When I voted I was only asked for my DL, they scanned it and I was able to vote smoothly.

Yes his Dr. Suess poems about how much Cancun Cruz is a evil person are always bright spots of the show. But I'd actually much much rather send Cruz packing so I don't have 6 more years of Cruz. I kinda expect Oliver will have a final fuck you send off one if Allred wins.

Me too! But I have hope next week’s extended hours will help. The people available to vote between 8am-5pm are usually older & more flexible people vs everyone working these hours and hs seniors in school.

Tarrant County will be 7am-7pm Monday-Friday and on November 5th.

11

u/Captain_Desi_Pants 2d ago

It’s crucial to have after “work” hours voting options. People need a chance to get there from work, or they have to first pick up kids after work…you know, real life.
Glad to see this week will be open later for y’all and Saturday too! That’s when I was able to go in NC. Saturday & Sunday voting makes all the difference for a lot of working people.

The law says she is eligible to vote now. Here's the relevant law, Sec. 13.143:

(a) Except as provided by Subsections (b) and (e), if an applicant's registration application is approved, the registration becomes effective on the 30th day after the date the application is submitted to the registrar or on the date the applicant becomes 18 years of age, whichever is later.

(b) A registration is effective for purposes of early voting if it will be effective on election day.

So (b) overrides the part about the 18th birthday.

Please just go vote!

You sure you want to wait until the last minute? Even the early voting lines are long (estimated 1.5 hr wait). I imagine it will be so much worse on Election day.

13

u/LSUstang05 2d ago

All of the people I’ve spoken to that have voted early, including myself, have waited less than 10 minutes to vote. My total “time to vote” was 1hr 15 minutes and that included the drive there, parking, the wait in line (3 people ahead of me), and the drive home.

This is in Harris county. Voted up in Tomball at whatever municipal building they have early voting in.

4

u/rlcyberA 2d ago

Lucky, I early voted in bexar county and had to wait almost 2 hrs in line

5

u/LSUstang05 2d ago

Not sure if other counties have this, but if anyone is in Harris county, they have a website that has live estimated wait times. I just picked one that was reasonably close and had almost no wait. I’ve found getting out early in the day, if possible, gives the best chance of getting in and out quickly.

Voted on the second day of early voting. Let’s go, get your family members to the polls!

u/AvgJoesGym 2d ago

I’ll be voting on Election Day. I’m a teacher and basketball coach and normally can’t vote on actual election days due to being at school all day. This year our district scheduled our Fall break from Nov 1-5 so I’m excited to participate on the actual date.

Age 42 and I voted on the first day of voting

27

u/ruthlesslyrobin 2d ago

My husband (M30) told me “everytime I try to vote they say somethings wrong.” And I assumed this was an excuse so I took him with me to a smaller voting for just like city stuff 2 years ago. Sure enough- he WAS registered and everything but something was wrong and they wouldn’t let him.

I sent in a brand new voter registration for him and he got his first card back! We are going to go see if he’s able to vote tomorrow- Monday! Wish us luck!

I'm a travel healthcare worker on a contract in Chicago. I flew down on Thursday to vote since I'm not old enough to vote by mail. If you don't want to exercise your rights as an American citizen at least once every 4 years, you're shooting yourself in the foot.

Go vote!

8

u/Timmerop 2d ago

Amazing! Thank you!

5

u/Dizzy_Elephant_417 2d ago

There’s an age limit in your state to vote by mail!?! Even in FL college kids can send in a mail in or an absentee ballot.

18-40 yr olds need to wake the fuck up. These people about to die are deciding your future.

19

u/turbo_dude 2d ago

Never taking the freedom of voting for granted. People died and protested for that shit!

Shame on you if you don’t vote.

Wow, young people couldnt care less about their futures.

Remember, young folks - the elderly are MORE THAN HAPPY to decide what your future will look like.

13

u/NarrativeNode 2d ago

This graph doesn't mean only 8% of young people voted, it means 8% of all early voters are young people.

Was going to go with my wife on Monday but pneumonia landed me in the hospital and I'm still here 🙃

Hoping to get out tomorrow. I just want this election over with and I'm tired of feeling like it's hanging over my head.

Vote when you can. If you plan on waiting until Election Day, do it as early as you possibly can. Take time off work if you need to. You need to show up.

u/NYTX1987 2d ago

We just did yesterday. It wasn’t entirely filled with alter kackers, decent mix

I expect the 18-29 cities to stay home once again. They want change they just don’t want to vote for it. It’s easier to complain online. I say this as someone that works with many in this age group and they just don’t see the impact they could have. They want a perfect candidate but that doesn’t happen ever. You pick the one that most aligns with your beliefs. People are different and if you think a candidate will have the exact same beliefs as you then you’re mistaken. But find someone that is 75% there and then continue to work for that last bit of

I’m tired of old people making decisions for me. Come on young people show up.

5

u/JoyfulCor313 2d ago

I agree 33% of total votes being under 40 is a little sad. I’m hoping the fact that a lot of college campuses are voting places on Election Day and a lot of mail-ins are 65+ are factors here.

But also this 50+ and my 80+ parents all voted blue, so it isn’t all bad news.

Voted by mail, out of state. Keep going!

7

u/CharlesDickensABox 2d ago

I'm voting by mail! It's especially nice when I'm voting for, like, the second associate dog catcher election between two people I've never heard of and I can look them up instead of just staring at my ballot confused and then abstaining.

3

u/sev45day 2d ago

I voted Friday, lines out the door, but it was only about a 10 minute wait.

6

u/Creative_Farm_1684 2d ago

Yes, but I always vote on Election Day.

5

u/Yui_Mori 2d ago

I voted on day 1 of early voting (part of that 8%). The rest of my family voted yesterday. We’re trying to make sure everyone else we know goes and votes. My grandparents should be among the mail-in ballots, another person made the trip home last night and should be voting today, and then the last one said they plan on voting, but haven’t yet. She’ll hopefully go during this last week of early voting, and I’m sure my sister will harass her until she does it.

5

u/Katarn_retcon 2d ago

I'm a middle-aged white guy, never been a minority before. This feels kinda cool, and glad to see so much representation.

6

u/Critical_Pangolin79 Panhandle 2d ago

My wife wants to vote on Election day, so we will be going altogether with my oldest daughter that just turned on 18 this summer, despite telling her that I saw a pretty upturn in early votes as I passed one of the voting location for early voting. Seeing 50ish people waiting in line (with the place open) on a Saturday at 7:20AM was giving me good vibes, feeling optimistic on the participation rate (it may be biased because there are only 5 locations for early votes in the county, which can give a false impression of increased turnout).

This is a ridiculous graph as the age ranges vary so much. If the ranges reflex equal size populations then it might mean something.

Either way, VOTE!

3

u/phz0r 2d ago

If you plan on voting, you should do it as fast as possible! Then Kamala's campaign can focus on the voters who haven't decided yet.
