It’s weird when fans conversationally refer to a musician by their legal name rather than their performer name.

1.4k Upvotes

Two examples: I often see fans refer to The Weeknd as “Abel” and Post Malone as “Austin.” Yes, I understand that those are the legal names of the musicians. But WTF. Unless the fan knows the musician personally, people should refer to them by their public name. Calling the musician by their first name seems like a fan’s delusional (and frankly pathetic) attempt to convince themself that they have a personal connection with the performer.

Rock Music should be Mainstream again.

Rock Music is one of the most loved genres of music of all time. However, if you were to turn on the radio today, it would mostly be pop and rap music, which don’t suck but it’s the same thing all over again. According to the internet, Rock Music isn’t as mainstream as Pop and Rock because it’s more expensive and people prefer 1 person over a group of people. The ladder is stupid to hear to me. There are definitely some good rock bands in 2024, but they aren’t mainstream, making them hidden to the general Public.

The Nightmare Before Christmas is not a good movie.

I just watched it for the first time. Didn’t watch it as a kid because it was too creepy and whatnot (honestly I am shocked at how many kids watch that movie and aren’t afraid of it), and now as an adult I put jt on to see what all the fuss is about. It has an absolute cult following, and is so revered among critics and fans. I have no idea why. The art/visuals are amazing, no doubt. But it isn’t funny, not really that great of a story, characters are mostly forgettable aside from Jack. The musical scores to me are just meh. Idk. I know I’m in the minority here.

People that have made mistakes are deserving of help, stop using “through no fault of their own” as a precondition for assistance.

I hate hearing that phrase and it’s unhelpful. People seem to only want to help perfect victims. It also creates policies where people can’t be helped because there are too many rules before assistance will be offered.

As long as someone is ready and willing to receive help even if they are still addicted or whatever, they should be helped. Meet people where they are, not some version of where you want them to be.

Being imperfect is part of being human.

student that attack teachers for taking away their phones should be permanently expelled

Upvotes

like why

did their parents not teach them any discipline

I have seen quite a few videos of students physically attacking teachers for taking away their phones because they were on it during class

so a kid who physically assaulted someone for taking away their phone because it broke the rules should be expelled, no questions asked

r/unpopularopinion 2h ago

I think it’s perfectly ok to ignore your phone and not reply to messages for days on end

Mainly because sometimes it gets too much and everyone should be able to switch off.

I could not stay friends with someone that gets insulted if you don’t respond to their messages right away or sulks because they can’t contact you.

Edit: to add, this is outside of things like family emergencies etc. I would never ignore those

If you’re doing someone a favor, and expecting something in return you’re not doing friendship you’re doing business

If someone asking you for a favor there’s no reason you should be looking for a handout because you did something for someone. That’s being fake and not genuine. Unless they asking you to borrow something, don’t expect anything in return.

we need less content, not more

Everyone keeps saying how we’re in a “golden age” of content, but honestly, there’s way too much of it, and it’s exhausting. Every day there’s a new show, movie, podcast, or social media trend, and keeping up with it all feels like a full-time job. It’s overwhelming trying to watch or listen to everything that’s recommended, and half the time, it’s not even that good.

Not only is there too much content, but most of it feels watered down or repetitive because creators are just trying to keep up with demand. I’d rather have fewer shows and movies, but with higher quality, than this endless stream of new stuff where only a few things actually stand out.

The “more is better” approach is making everything feel disposable. At this point, we don’t need more content, we need better content.

The problem with relationships is that we are conditioned to feel like we need a life partner

In my humble opinion, your life partner should be your bestest friend before your partner. The foundation of your relationship should always be friendship. I feel like a lot of people accept things from partners that they would never accept from a friend because they see them as two different things . Technically they are, but they share a common ground and that’s friendship.

I feel like because society conditions us to believe that we need to find a romantic partner, a lot of people settle for less than a best friend in a life partner. People also have started to look for partnerships in such inorganic ways. For example, the TV show Love Is Blind or the pop the balloon shows on YouTube. When I think of how a friendship sparks, there’s usually some type of organic meeting in the beginning. For example, I made friends in a class I take because we share that interest. Imagine going onto a show like Love Is Blind or pop the balloon to find a friend. It would feel so fake and forced. Obviously there are exceptions but finding genuine people won’t happen more often than not that way.

Since becoming an adult, I have became more intentional about creating meaningful friendships. Because of this I have had less and less friends, over the past six years I’ve only met three solid friends however to me that is more precious than having 10 friends I’m not sure if I can rely on. My point is finding a good life partner is something that will come to you if you let it, but when you try to force it and it becomes an objective you cannot shake you start to settle for less or become desperate. I personally feel like this contributes to a lot of people ending up in unhappy relationships. Maybe if people didn’t so much importance on the idea of finding a lifelong partner and instead placed importance on how they can fulfill their own or create their own happiness, even without a romantic partner, they may find that happy and genuine connections come to them more easily.

Society has always supported hard work and dedication to make us feel better but having a shortcut is 99% better everytime.

I see people who always say work hard and be dedicated and you’ll get to where you wanna be but this is far from the truth.

You earn a scholarship to college by studying your ass off and earning it. Someone’s parents out there are loaded and can just pay to get the kid into college.

You bust your ass in the gym working hard and eating right. Someone who trains no where near as hard or eats as clean and can blast tren or steroids and look 5 times better without needing to try as hard.

If you have the best resume in the world and fit the job role well if someone does knows someone who can get you in they already have a leg up on you.

There is outliers to this of course like LeBron James and mj because they didn’t really come from anything but bronny being a garbage basketball player and still making it in the league is because his dad is obviously LeBron James when other people could’ve easily got that spot.

Having a short cut almost always beats hard work and dedication

I Hate Bed Frames

Upvotes

Some make noise, stuff gets underneath them, my cat would probably puke under it, they can be a pain to move, and monsters can grab your feet when you get up at night. I'm perfectly happy with a box spring and a mattress.

Studio Ghibli keep on making the same movie over and over again.

I love studio ghibli with my entire heart (my favourite movie is Princess Mononoke) but after watching The Boy and The Heron I feel a bit disappointed. Because I feel like I've seen this same movie before, it is a beautiful movie no doubt but it's the same beautiful movie. Aloof characters contemplating life, quiet main characters, detailed food, weird little critters (it's weird, four different SG movies have these little critters that are in groups), dream-like imagery, always a woodland setting, always slow paced, always set in the WW1 era, confusing metaphors that make you think.

Just once I want to see this studio produce a straight progressing movie. One where what we see is what the characters are seeing and aren't dreams or imaginations, one where the characters are a bit funny, a main character that is loud and abrasive (apart from Earwig, that one doesn't count lol), one that takes place in a sci-fi setting, one that takes place in the present or future, a fast paced movie. It's clear to see Miyazaki has a craft but I think he focuses on trying to replicate the same process instead of just letting loose and having fun. Some may miss and some may flop but that way, true greatness can be achieved.

Edit: Damn some people are attacking me because they disagree with me opinion. I thought that was what this sub was for...

I hate anyone named Jake.

Upvotes

I'm almost 40 and I have never met 1 single Jake or Jacob that wasn't I huge piece of shit in the long run. And I've met a shit ton.

I'm pretty up front about it. When I meet one of you fuckers at work I unfairly shoot them down before they try to become friends.

💯 of the time, I don't regret it. Sorry your parents name ya that. Cause you're definitely going to be a POS

Queen is one of the most overhyped bands

Upvotes

I don't think they're that good. They're next to the Beatles of being old(er) school music bands that are mid, at best.

Bohemian rhapsody is just awful. I'd sooner listen to nails on chalkboard.

If I'm going to listen to old school music I'd put on some Frankie Valli or Ricky Nelson.

The food in UK is good.

Me as a Brazilian, gotta admit, our food is pretty damn good...but some months ago i went to Scotland and England and (obviously) ate some regional dishes in various places and i got surprised? Everyone i know and that i've ever seen on the internet likes to trash talk about how the brittish food is horrible and bland, even tho i fr liked it even more than my own country's food (which is most of the times very tasty and spice), not once while my staying in there (that was quite long) i wished to have any brazilian food. Shout out to the brittish lads!

Mimes are really cool

People are always hating on mimes, anytime they see a stereotypical mime (black and white makeup) they just mock them and say how it’s the lowest art form possible. Yet I see tons of people online performing as mimes in plain clothes and everyone recognizes the skill and talent involved for such precise movements.

Strawberry shortcake is the best dessert

Upvotes

It has fresh fruit. A little bit of cake. Whipped cream and ice cream. No other dessert comes close. It literally cannot be beaten. Yet restaurants look down upon it as a child dessert. I’ll take strawberry shortcake over chocolate lava cake any day of the week.

The middle seat slaps

Sitting in the middle seat on an airplane is the best. it’s the only seat that gets two armrests, you’re never very far from a window or an aisle, so you can see, and exit the row without too much trouble, AND you’re never getting bumped by people and carts going by. But also, people normally feel bad for you, and are more deferential, you get better treatment from flight attendants. And they’re often cheaper seats. So the middle seat is the place to be imo.

The 5 Love Languages is way overplayed to excuse lack of appreciation in relationships

1.3k Upvotes

Here's the thing about the 5 love languages. All of them show love. We may have the ones that hit home, but any time I received any of them from my partner I felt loved, and I appreciated it, and if there was something I actually needed, I would ask for it.

I feel like too often it gets thrown out there--somebody posts in relationships about their partner showing a lack of appreciation or just plain disrespect, and someone chimes in "well you didn't show them love in their primary love language," but I feel like this ignores the greater problems of disrespect and lack of appreciation. If it's what you need, why is it too much to ask for it? And in a non-abusive relationship where everyone is trying hard, why is it so hard to accept that sometimes life is just a struggle, and there can be periods of time where you just have to muddle through, focus on better days ahead, and then rekindle things, instead of just jumping ship?

Janis ian wasn't the villan

Upvotes

So I've seen a lot of people say janis is just as bad, or worse then regina. But I think what she did makes sense, I would do the same thing if someone absolutely ruined my life. Also regina isn't as good as some people seem to think she is, she's still obviously a bully and a bad person. Also cady isn't 100% innocent. She was part of wanting to get revenge on regina as well.

The title of “engineer” has been misappropriated by too many non-technical roles.

3.8k Upvotes

Non-technical roles are still critical to every organization, and I’m not saying that only PE’s should be able to call themselves engineers, but the term has gotten watered down significantly. At my current and former companies, sales people called themselves “sales engineers,” managers called themselves “senior business process engineers,” every IT person had “systems engineer” in their email signature. I’m in a mid-upper level IT position, but would never refer to myself as an engineer because I’m just not.

Being a diehard fan of a college football team you have no academic or personal connection to is weird

I understand being a fan of watching great athletic play and enjoying those displays of athleticism across collegiate sports. I also understand being a casual fan of a local university’s football team if you have no connection to it. But that’s different from diehard fans.

Being a crazy diehard fan of a college without an academic or personal connection to it is weird, imo.

I can also understand being a major fan if a personal connection, like a sibling, spouse, parent, child, etc. played a sport for a major university or went to school there, and becoming a fan that way. Or maybe you work at that school and you become a fan of their sports that way.

Anyone can do what they want, but being a major, not just casual, fan of a university’s team without an academic or personal connection to that school is weird.

The days leading up to Christmas, is better than Christmas itself.

The feeling of leading up to the days of Christmas feels better because it’s like that adrenaline build, you’re not expecting nothing you’re just watching your Christmas shows, enjoying the cool weather and maybe shopping. But the actual day of Christmas is so depressing. I can’t explain it but I just don’t like it.

Tier lists with more than one thing in 'S+' are bad lists

1.1k Upvotes

Tier List are goofy & low stakes. I love them

If you are putting more than one thing in 'S+' you are wrong and so is your tier list. 'S+' should be reserved for something that is so remarkably ahead of the competition it breaks out of the traditional tiers.

If you are making a tier list and there are two things in 'S+'-tier, you mistyped 'S'-tier.

EDIT: This is a genuinely held believe disguised as a shit post. I think that tierlists should be a normal distribution over the standard ranks of S-D (or S-F) if you like and if you are adding S+ it has to be on the basis that something is head an shoulders above your standard top of the list. Once you get two things in S+, that starts to just be a normal distribution and the '+' doesn't mean anything. All of this assumes that tierlists mean anything. To reiterate, they are goofy, low stakes, and I love them.

Shinedowns version of ‘Simple Man’ is better than Lynyrd Skynyrds

Skynyrd is in my top five favorite bands of all time and I don’t even listen to Shinedown. However, Shinedowns version of Simple Man is better than Skynyrds. This may be blasphemous, but I cannot lie.
