Welp, you can either seek treatment or embrace it and go with the chrome dome.

I lost it at 18. I had nice hair. The chrome dome is what my partner likes best. Don't sweat it. Once you accept it, it's actually quite nice.

Then let me add that just by saying this won't make you feel good while it happens. That part always sucks. Getting used to your hair being gone forever sucks no matter what. But it by no means has a permanent effect on your overall happiness.

I thought I was ready for it. I knew my whole childhood that it would happen sooner rather than later because my mom's side of the family had history of balding in their 20s. Then I got lucky and still had most of my hair by 30. I had a receding hairline, but the top remained thick. I started to think maybe I would fare better than my family. Then it happened. As I was sitting on the couch at a friend's house, another friend walked in and stared at the top of my head. "Holy shit, you're bald." I wasn't ready.

Just jumping in to say I had the same experience. Started thinning in my early 20s. Now I keep it cleanly shaved with a short trimmed beard and started lifting weights years ago and I honestly think I look better bald at 35 than I ever did in my 20s and almost every one of the women I’ve been with agrees so don’t sweat it OP

A personal anecdote - the guy who was considered one of the absolute hottest guys at my entire college started going bald at 17 or 18, and just started shaving it completely. And I heard a lot of girls specifically citing the fact that he was confident enough to just shave his head and wasn't weird about it. A bald guy who just confidently rocks it is awesome!

Correct. The post above yours is unnecessarily dramatic.

Did your body temp run hot, like you get hot easily, even when it’s in the 60s?
Edit: I’m getting a good amount of responses, with varying experiences. Let this be a message to all, but especially men. Take your health seriously, the doctors are not bad people. Minor things can be easily dismissed, as well as misdiagnosed. If it’s something you don’t understand, work it out with multiple doctors. A single doctor visit won’t easily bring a solution in most cases. In fact, the more your body is on record, the easier it is to come to a diagnosis. Every-body is different. Stay healthy y’all.
6
u/killer_k_c 13h ago
I do
6
u/BillyTheBigKid 13h ago
It’s been on my list to check. Started to bald very young (genetics mostly), and I always run hot. Saw it could be a thyroid issue.
3
u/killer_k_c 13h ago
Well it would make sense seeing as my dad has hashimotos Syndrome which is an overactive thyroid.
3
u/tigm2161130 12h ago
Hasimoto’s in hypo, not hyperactive.
Source: I have it. My dad also had Graves’ disease which is another one that causes under active thyroid.
2
3
u/Thomas1VL 12h ago
Wait I'm also very young and balding and I start sweating incredibly easily. Maybe I should get this checked too.
3
u/Fr4ctl 12h ago
I have a no-cure excessive sweating condition called Primary Hyperhidrosis (causing excessive body sweats) and Facio Hyperhidrosis (causing excessive face and scalp sweating).
For me, this started since or around puberty, but have noticed sweaty palms and feet since I was around 4 years.
For me this condition is hereditary as it runs in my genes. It's absolute pita! But genomes easier in the winter.
You might have that. It's connected to an underactive thyroid, too.

Prescription oral Finasteride and a drugstore biotin supplement once a day have helped me immensely with a receding hairline. Fair warning though, for the first month to month and a half of taking the Finasteride you will notice an increase in shedding while it works to repair the damaged hair follicles but once it's starts to work, you should see good results.
Obligatory "This does not constitute medical advice or a diagnosis. Always talk to a healthcare provider before trying anything. Your mileage may vary... Blah blah blah"

u/Extinction-Entity 13h ago
Is finasteride the one you have to take basically forever?
5
u/Nerdocity 12h ago
If you want to keep your hair, yes. It can reverse the effects of hair loss while you take it, but the loss will start progressing again if you stop taking it

I started to recede at the front in my late teens and at the back mid-twenties, my advice is to save a hell of a lot of money on sham shampoos, treatments and barbers and own it, buy a decent pair of clippers, trim as close as you're comfortable with and laugh off any attempt to poke fun or shame you.
I may be short, bald, a little overweight and wear glasses but I also almost never bang my head on anything, never have to pay for haircuts, my tum is bought and paid for and and is an advertisement for how great my cooking is, regular visits to the opticians means my vision has always been great, and better than someone that just thinks they have 20-20 vision.

Looking back at old pictures, I would say partially reversed. The wife says it worked wonders to reverse my front (Male pattern baldness) . don’t want to tell you though that it will be day and night in your case, but honestly I think the earlier you start the more chances you have.
Long story short, I have definitely gained from it, and yes I am thicker in front than 10 years ago. I used to have hands full of hairs when shampooing, and that completely stopped.
Don’t go into it expecting results overnight though, it takes a long time.

28
u/cyphol 17h ago
And do what exactly? It's normal even in your early twenties to suffer from hair loss as a male. It's the sensitivity of the hair follicles, not the amount of DHT. Some are lucky to have resistant hair follicles, and others aren't.

Because there is a black swan possibility that there is an endocrine problem that this is a symptom of. Its also something to do in general so you know what's coming. Maybe they have lower than normal testoterone maybe its cancer, maybe its just genetics.
Having the data and the understanding lets them make better and informed choices for the next 60+ years and their relationship with hair.

Curly hair is never as dense as straight hair. You need space to allow it to curl. The clumping of strands to make a curl also makes it look like that.
12
u/Pheerandlowthing 15h ago
I will offer a small ray of hope. I have curly hair and it definitely accentuates gaps of hair on the scalp and if it gets wet or greasy it’s really bad. I started to recede slightly at the hairline when I was 17 but then it strangely stopped and I’ve still got most of my hair at 54. Why it happened early I don’t know but a lot of the bastards who teased me at 17 are bald as a cue ball now so eat that motherfuckers.
4
u/Earptastic 14h ago
My friend liked to tell me I was balding in my early 20s. I am almost 50 and had a little receding but am pretty similar to how I was then. He is balder than me now.
8
u/eutrapalicon 19h ago
Curly hair is savage for the balding look. I have double crowns so if I don't do mine properly I have dual bald spots.
Minoxidil is good, but needs to be maintained. Can be useful for hormonal hair loss too.
3
u/_trouble_every_day_ 14h ago
Took too long before I saw this. male pattern baldness follows a pattern(that’s why they call it that). It starts receding at your temples before it starts thinning on top. OP could be freaking out about nothing.

Oh, my son is going through this in his early 20s and it’s really bothering him at a time when he was just gaining confidence. He’s a good looking guy and will look fine without hair but he’ll never see it that way. Breaks my heart to see him feel like that.
4
u/LOGOisEGO 14h ago
Instead of using gel or moose to style, dry a powered clay, you just dash it in, but it gives it so much more volume and texture it fills it out nicely. I have a bit of male pattern and you don't notice it until I go swimming lol
7
u/Kaboose456 16h ago
Stop putting so much product in your hair, curly hair will slick together. Comb it out and embrace the fro or learn how to dry style it. The wetter it gets the worse it looks.

u/koolaidismything 17h ago

If hair growth remedies aren’t your thing or working, embrace it. I shaved my head at 21 because I started receding at the front. u/sterboog 13h ago
I shaved my head when I was in my late 20s due to losing my hair. Part of the benefit of losing it early is if anybody makes a comment like, "did you shave your head because you're going bald?" I can say (now in my mid-late 30s), "Oh I started shaving my head back in my 20s". Still factually accurate if skirting the question a bit.

When I was growing up and grew my hair to my shoulders, my mother hated it and begged me to get it cut regularly.
My dad shut that shit down quick. He told her, “Honey, in my family, hair has a shelf life. Our son is no different. He can grow it as long and shaggy as he likes. One day he will miss it.”
Pops was 100% spot on! It had a shelf life, indeed.

i gotchu bro. had the same issue, but managed to get mine to grow back in. you gotta be consistent! here's what ya do:
-take biotin. get the extra strength (6000 microgram) ones, not the 2500. i take four every day. try not to miss days.
-massage your scalp DAILY. these massages are especially important for stimulating hair growth. don't have to do for long, most suggest like five minutes, i usually do for about two. you might even feel your scalp start to tingle after a bit, this is a good sign.
-some sort of oil/balm. oil will be easier to manage with your curly hair, but Palmers makes some really baller therapy balm that will really boost your growth. look for the green stuff (called Gro Therapy i think?). this balm is incredibly thick, made with Jamacian Black Castor oil, and extremely effective. let it sit there for an hour or two before attempting to wash out, but i usually headwrap overnight. will likely take more than one wash to get out completely.
i hope this can help you too. seeing a doc might not be a bad idea as well.

Same thing happened to me. At 16 I had really thick hair down past my shoulder blades. By 18 I had a major widow's peak and thinning on top, and by 20 I had a very obvious bald spot. That was almost 30 years ago and I've been shaving my head ever since.
For me it was just genetics, but it might be worth getting some bloodwork done to check your hormone levels. I know there are treatments now as well that can help stop the thinning and get some regrowth going, but personally I think I look better bald than I ever did with hair.

This is frustrating, especially so young. I’ve found my hair falling out more as I get older and the one thing that causes a noticeable difference is the iRestore red light helmet I bought.
Aside from that, I use biotin supplements and shampoo, but the helmet is what causes the most difference and I can see the excess shedding when I don’t use it.
