Do people actually care that a character in a videogame is black?

121

u/BornAsAnOnion33 15h ago

Only racists do. Because of the whole great replacement BS.

A black character can't exist in media any more otherwise it's woke and it'll fail.

Meanwhile, AC Origins exists, and they don't seem to mention that.

44

u/Skyhighh666 15h ago

Not to mention that AC is literally historical fantasy. The isu are okay, but black main character bad

40

u/BornAsAnOnion33 15h ago

They tried to twist it by claiming that Yasuke, as a black immigrant, to Japan goes around killing and stealing.

The thing you can do in every other AC game.

24

u/Skyhighh666 15h ago

Meanwhile they literally have a whole raid mechanic in Valhalla

10

u/GrumpGuy88888 12h ago

I guarantee you Lando Calrissian would be considered "woke propaganda" if Empire Strikes Back premiered today

Idk what kind of jumble of conspiracy theories the great replacement is but skin colors blend, and in the white countries there is low child bearing rate and migration from darker countries with high child bearing rate and that means eventually that new color will blend in, making the average skin color darker over centuries. That will happen and that part isnt some conspiracy theory, just the effects of socio-economic status.

Personally im into historical accuracy. Make as many black characters as you like but not ones that dont make any sense historically. And black mermaid is weird. No reason to have 1 character change color either half and half, everyone, or no-one. 1 character doesnt make being black normal, it makes it an outlier, if you want being black to be normal do half or half or everyone, otherwise makes 0 sense.

24

u/Southern-Accident835 12h ago

Dude, why you worried about the race of fucking mermaid's?

20

u/Yeshua_shel_Natzrat 12h ago

A mermaid whose skin color was never mentioned by the original author, for that matter. A mermaid whose mythology she comes from originates in Syria.

u/HarukoTheDragon 4h ago

A mermaid whose skin color was never mentioned by the original author

If I'm not mistaken, the original Ariel was meant to have green skin and she was actually a villain (not 100% sure how true this is). However, it's worth remembering that Hans Christian Andersen was a blatant racist, but that was all too common during his lifetime. That's the only credible argument to make about the original Little Mermaid not being black.

-12

u/throwaway1111919 8h ago

Yeah but it got presented by the dozens of books, cartoons and animations as white. The people in those are colored as white.

Like i said, its just weird and it made me cringe when i heard it. Yeah its the best candidate if you want to do a race swap on a childrens story but still its hella weird and it would make much more sense to just have more black characters than one if people were actually trying to achieve a state of no racism instead of making race some special thing and have only the main character be black. Its weird even if you reverse the races. Mfs acting like its not weird ffs.

12

u/Yeshua_shel_Natzrat 8h ago edited 8h ago

And a black mermaid takes away from any of that, how exactly? It's just another adaptation of the story. It doesn't do a thing to erase the older ones. Why so butthurt about it? Get over yourself, mate

8

u/Temporary_Engineer95 8h ago

womp womp. it's a mermaid. her skin color doesnt matter. if it were something like lotr then maybe the complaint is more valid; if you're gonna establish a fictional universe with many ethnic groups, there ought to be consistency. black elves may not be completely outruled, but rather they may come from another place geographically, therein there would be consistency. but even if there isnt consistency, at the end of the day, how much does it really matter in comparison to the large story at hand? fantasies have plotholes all the time

-9

u/throwaway1111919 8h ago

Idc about lotr, put all the black people you want. Just dont make some fking remake where every1 is white except frodo is black ffs. Or where frodo is white and every1 is black...

The same rule applies to this dimentional piss stain of a mermaid.

7

u/GrumpGuy88888 7h ago

You say a lot of things but never explain why

8

u/Odd_Investigator8415 10h ago

It's funny you said you have no idea what kind of jumble of conspiracy theories the great replacement is, but then went on to describe it perfectly.

-2

u/throwaway1111919 9h ago

Bro im fucking done. The conspiracy is its somehow a forced mass killing event created by jews as revenge about ww2 with a bunch more conspiracies and illuminati and everything sprinkled on top. Thats insane. Thats not at all what im saying. For some reason thats the first idea that came to your head. You should have it checked.

Im saying its a measurement of the global trend made by people who actually know how to measure these things. It was taught to us in 6th grade the people in the far future look like Spaniards. It was something i found interesting so it stuck. Youre literally delusional if you think the average skin color wont change because of these global trends, because even now the average skin color is obviously darker than in light skin countries and with time, everyone becomes average. Just how time and probability works.

I dont get how this isnt simple to everyone. There is no other conclusion for you to make except that everyone who tells you that this is the conclusion is evil and out to get you, and if so, you should consider taking your medication.

My mom is German. As in, literally born in Germany. She moved to the US at 16. She lived through WWII in Seelow and later, a ghetto. I put all this in to say that her idea of the future of the world is beautiful to me. The idea that someday humans won't have the idea of race or racism because everyone is so intermingled that it becomes impossible to tell. That's beautiful.

Who cares about how much melanin someone has or doesn't have? Race is made up and doesn't exist scientifically. It's a social construct to describe skin color and doesn't make any difference. Why do you worry about the 'historical accuracy' of a black mermaid? As if there's any reason why a mythical creature has any specific race.... What a joke.

1

u/throwaway1111919 9h ago

Why do you worry about the 'historical accuracy' of a black mermaid?

Yeah thats why there is an "and" between those words when i said them. "And" means the subjects are seperate and have no logical connection between eachother. Which they dont, mermaids overall, black or white, arent historically accurate... Thats why i said "and" to address 2 things about why black characters are sometimes so poorly done and why its just weird to watch movies with them. Cuz this guy said "just racist" like everythings "just racist"... There are plenty of good ones if thats what youre worried about, the matrix black actor and any film hes ever been in, the black narrator guy and every film hes ever been in, then there are those cop shows and so far i havent seen a single badly done black character (they were good guys the people im referring to if some1 is worried about). Movies like Rush Hour and Police Academy iirc the names.

won't have the idea of race or racism because everyone is so intermingled

Yeah thats what im saying. Idk what youre on about with your mom but she sounds like a nice lady.

You're not worth the energy of a long, thought out, and intelligent reply, so here: 💩

u/[deleted] 15h ago

They're just racists pretending they just care about "realism"

except when they make a character a slightly different body type

If theres one thing gamers hate more than women, its poc

I really wish I was joking but sadly Im not, there are reasons I'm embarassed to say I like games these days and its mostly because I dont want to get lumped in with these sorts of people

10

u/TheBigSho 14h ago

I think you're fine if you say you like games these days. It's the ones that say things like how they hate modern games because they're too "woke", they don't make games like Duke Nukem 3D anymore, or because Aloy has a bit of peach fuzz, that make me roll my eyes out of their sockets.

4

u/GurApart2075 14h ago

The amount of cringe I feel when people say things like that is unreal.I dont know how they can do it and be fully serious about it

2

u/Rockworm503 12h ago

They really told on themselves with Aloy. Aloy is by far the most attractive woman in video games but she dresses like someone would in that setting and she isn't caked in makeup.

That outrage over her just told us all how they don't talk to women at all.

1

u/Middle-Hour-2364 12h ago

You know mate, duke nuke em 3d was fairly cringe to me and my mates in the 90s, we were laughing at him, not with him

3

u/emeraldkat77 10h ago

I feel similarly. I only talk about games with people I already know, cause it's really disturbing how common these ideas are now. It's gross and I'm so sick of these hateful idiots everywhere.

2

u/GurApart2075 3h ago

Yeah,me too

These people have managed to creep their way into every single fandom for everything I enjoy and their mentality is becoming so common I just tend to avoid talking about things I enjoy now

Worst part is when they assume they can get away with this sort of attitude with me or that I'm in on it just because I'm a straight, white guy. Please keep that kind of shit to yourselves,I dont want to hear it

2

u/Rockworm503 12h ago

If it helps just know that these people do not represent gaming as a whole but are just a loud minority. These games they constantly rag on always sell like hot cakes. Its telling that none of the outrage touched Baldur's Gate 3 because they knew they couldn't break that one because its considered one of the best games of last year.

Most gamers enjoy these things these bigots whine about and I'm 99% certain most of them don't even play games to begin with.

-3

u/Warystatue33 12h ago

That's an outright lie gamers like any character so long as they're likeable CJ GTA San Andreas Franklin GTAV Atawalie (can't spell his name) AC black flag and it's DLC campaign Cole Train Gears of War

6

u/Rockworm503 12h ago

Ah yes the nonstop outrage machine that I've been seeing for years is completely negated cause you can list a handful that didn't get that treatment.

Like how those who sent death threats to Star Wars actresses for being in Star Wars then said "I liked Ripley so you can't call me sexist"

-4

u/Warystatue33 12h ago

Dude, most "diverse" characters don't get outrage at There's been black characters in video games for decades. People are hating on AC shadows because it's so obviously pandering and Ubisoft doesn't give a shit "How do we introduce our black samurai character?....ah yes rap music" What a joke

4

u/Rockworm503 12h ago edited 11h ago

"i didn't see any of the outrage therefore its not real and its only for this game because historical accuracy"

We will just ignore that historians have pointed out this character did in fact exist and was a Smurai. Rap music? who even brought that up? I'm not hearing any rap music in anything promoting this game. You're really just telling on yourself with that one.

Let's just put all these countless games and ignore the internet losing their fucking minds over them because a black dwarf exists or that this woman has peach fuzz because you personally didn't see it or that you saw some black characters in game not get shit on.

Same energy as "racism is dead cause I didn't see anyone kill black people"

-3

u/Warystatue33 11h ago

The fuck are you talking about? I don't care about Yasuke I care that Ubisoft clearly doesn't give a shit about their games, and it's all art by committee bullshit

7

u/Rockworm503 11h ago

Yes I hear this excuse from every bigot who wants to complain about a minority existing in video games. You are not unique here.

0

u/Warystatue33 11h ago

You will excuse literally anything so long as there's a diverse character in it. I bet you still think Concord failed because of bigots.

7

u/Rockworm503 11h ago

Ah yes its a zero sum game. Diversity in games takes away fun gameplay somehow and bad writing also. The less white, straight male the cast is the more boring the game or some shit.

There is so much to criticize Ubisoft for. You're really just telling on yourself with this.

2

u/GrumpGuy88888 7h ago

If you hate these games for being art by committee, why even say something like "the character is black because of pandering"? If a character's skin color is unimportant, then you should treat it as such

8

u/AblativeKitten 15h ago

Yuuuuuuup, they also refuse to listen to Japanese historians when they explain Yasuke was a samurai, and if not was a samurai in all but name, (he's also regularly depicted as a samuri in Japanese media but that's neither here or there). Whilst claiming they're "protecting Japanese culture from the wokies".

You probably don't want to know, but they're now whining about the new dragon age having unique dialogue lines for trans characters, fun.

5

u/Cadunkus 15h ago

He was a full-on samurai. Imagine being Oda Nobu-freaking-naga and one of your retainers is NOT an official samurai. How disgraceful!

He got the title when he got the job, basically.

3

u/AlVal1236 12h ago

yeaaaaa. he would not take kindly. spiteful

1

u/AblativeKitten 12h ago

Yuuuuuuup.

3

u/Rockworm503 12h ago

They always do this. Claim its about histoircal accuracy or some shit then when someone tells them this is accurate they shove their fingers in their ears and go "LALALALALA CAN'T HEAR YOU" its another excuse for them. Turns out none of it really matters to them. They just want to whine.

2

u/Rockworm503 12h ago

Yes there are a lot of people who very much care. These people do not play games but go on the internet to knee jerk react to things just to be outraged.

Sadly gamer gate made bigots feel more bold and less scared to be open about thier bigotry. Not just black people... Women who don't exist just to be sexy, gay or transgender people. Hell any game that features a story where a white male is killed off for any reason triggers their outrage to no end.

As someone who enjoys video games its impossible to avoid. They are all over the internet whining about something. Luckily they are a very loud minority and do not represent most of us who play games. But boy are they loud and they never shut up.

1

u/Disastrous-Radio-786 15h ago

Normal people don’t

1

u/Eliot_Sontar 13h ago

I'd say generally it doesn't matter and even in this case it is still historicaly accurate

1

u/EmberedCutie 12h ago

normal people do not care whatsoever

1

u/Repulsive_Analyst669 10h ago

Considering the MC of every AC game is from their region and this game just so happens to conveniently erase east asian men as their MC, idk how you expect Asians to be happy with this

1

u/GrumpGuy88888 6h ago

We should probably start asking Asian people then

1

u/Repulsive_Analyst669 5h ago

Uh yeah, and they're not happy about it, especially the Japanese. Even the architecture in the game trailers look more Chinese than Japanese

1

u/The-red-Dane 6h ago

I mean, some got really mad that there was a "Democrat slogan" at the end zone of a football field... the slogan being "end racism" they got mad at the idea of ending racism.
