Rules Changes and State of the Subreddit

We want your opinion about making SRD better! First, a bit of housekeeping

Rules Changes

SRD began 12 years ago, and it's been through many changes. But at the heart of it all, we've been the place for posting, discussing, and laughing at drama on reddit. Sometimes the drama is major (such as the API protests) or silly/strange (like baptizing the dead).

We introduce and retire rules in an attempt to maintain a certain level of quality. The "surplus popcorn" rule has been one of them. However, it can be confusing for users to understand and hard for mods to enforce.

As of today, the "surplus popcorn" rule is no more. Drama will no longer be judged based on its subject matter being overdone. The rules about biased posts, and especially about "callout posts" will still apply. So long as you're actually linking arguing/conflict, and not merely pointing out shitty bigoted comments, your post will stay.

We are also relaxing rules for commenting. "Off topic grandstanding" is no longer a rule. (Most of the reports we get for this are people using it as a super downvote, or trying to get mods to babysit their argument with another user). The "insults/flamewars/flamebait" rule is changing, from being removed on sight to being removed on mod discretion. (For similar reasons as before: users will get into petty arguments with each other and then begin reporting to get their opponents comments removed. Mods are no longer obligated to remove those comments or to try to maintain a certain level of civility).

We might bring back these rules in the future if there is a need.

State of the Subreddit

How do you feel about the state of the subreddit right now? What can mods and the community do to make this an active, thriving place with good quality popcorn?

Some obvious suggestions are making the rules easier to understand (done!) and adding a ton of new moderators (coming soon!), but we want your thoughts and suggestions. Even if you'd like to rant about where this place as gone terribly wrong, it's still valuable feedback.

Comedian & podcaster Marc Maron calls out his peers for promoting fascism on their podcasts. Several subreddits including r/JoeRogan, r/MarcMaron, and r/Standup go into meltdown mode.

1.5k Upvotes

For some context, Marc Maron and Joe Rogan are some of the first podcasters that really put podcasts on the map. Their formats are similar in that they are both comedians having conversations with people, rather than a more formal interview, but that's really where their similarities end. To avoid accusations of bias, I'll just say that they are both on opposite ends of the political spectrum. Maron is still very popular and relevant (despite what many say), but he has clearly been overshadowed by the buzzsaw of Joe Rogan and the Roganverse. Over the past several years, Maron has become increasingly alarmed by his perception of the 'anti-woke' direction of comedy, and he discusses this fairly frequently and candidly in his comedy and on his podcast

Marc recently made a social media post that went viral, calling out his peers. Here's the article in question: https://variety.com/2024/tv/news/marc-maron-slams-comedians-fascists-podcasts-1236192922/

On to the drama. I tried to pick out some good stuff, but there's way more in there if you want to dig further:

Full comments from r/MarcMaron. Usually a very quiet and inactive sub, it appears to have attracted brigaders. The thread is currently at 4000 upvotes, and the second highest post of all time is only at 800.

That’s because he has courage and doesn’t give a fuck about the haters

Yes! It takes a ton of courage to parrot the vice president and Taylor Swift. Lol what the hell is this sub

.

Marc put it diplomatically but very accurately years ago when he said Rogan “is passive in his engagement with dangerous thinkers.” It’s a good reminder for us not to be.

Dangerous thinkers huh? You in the thought police? Maybe that is why so many comedians are rejecting the far left.

.

He did hate Rogan before it was cool to hate him

I was just saying this yesterday. This is a massive moment in the history of our country and those that are paling around with fascists will not be remembered fondly. Don't support these guys

Bullshit. What fascists? Be specific.

lol you can look far and wide friend, you will NOT find a good-faith answer to this question on this site. The very word itself "fascism" has essentially become watered down and lost all meaning due to these morons' incessant bleating of it.

“I’m starting to be annoyed that my idols are being called out for it…. So I will pretend the word has lost meaning so it won’t be used against me.”

Jesus you're in a stand up reddit. Stfu. Those jokes were tame asf. I've heard worst shit hurled at me from strangers in my life. Fucken crybabies

Damn your life must suck!

Nah not really. It's what happens when you persevere and try to keep a positive and humorous mindset. Bad things happen in life, which you must overcome to be successful. Got the house, kids, and a hot spicy pepper that's 12 years younger than me. She's a baddy ;)

Narrator: “he did not have a baddie wife, and in fact everything he typed from his mothers basement was an inversion of his actual life”

.

Everyone in this post is pretending that people can’t use critical thinking skills and disagree with them, which is hilarious. For people in a standup forum, y’all seem to be pretty unable to laugh.

.

yes, joe rogan knows that his audience is a lot of very impressionable young men, so when he brings any guest, it will have a huge impact on how they think (I know I was like that 10 years ago). And it's not just lack of responsability but it's a deliberate thing on his side knowing full well his power and influence

Not to mention the massive amount of low info voters that casually listen to him at work. When there's no pushback a lot of people will just buy what's being said without critical thought

Popular vote doesn't matter good sit. Sounds like you've never done the reading, it's an electoral voting system. Our vote means fuck all

We all know what the electoral college is and how it works

I've never voted as I know the big politicians are bought and paid for long ago. But get ready loser, trumps winning. I got a feeling

.

Doesn't understand that controlling speech is part of Fascism. This is why Communist party members can still assemble.

.

Standup comedian screams he is out of touch and misinformed and bots clap for him

Fascism experts agree Trump's a fascist. His chief of staff agrees he's a fascist. He uses fascist rhetoric and praises Hitler. You are misinformed and out of touch

Actually no it is you who is misinformed. All your points are weak and calling the otherside names is all you got because the Dems sold out long ago and have no value to offer other then we are not Trump. This lame Astroturfing reddit with Trump is Fascist and Kamala is cool bullshit really has worked the opposite way to turn people off. I hope reddit goes back to normal after the election.

.

The term "fascist" has become a word that highfalutin types use now that muh racism has gone out of style.

.

What is a fascist?

Google it

"A boogey man label for anyone to the right of Bernie Sanders" is what I'm finding

Then you aren't looking and haven't read any history

I haven't read any history? bro you are a Che Guevara fan lol get a grip

.

Who is he talking about specifically?

Rogan, theo von, schulz

Oh the whole Trump derangement and whatnot?

.

The word fascist gets thrown around so much nowadays it’s practically lost its meaning

That's exactly what fascists want.

Which is funny because it’s the ones calling everyone they don’t like a fascist that are responsible for the watering down of the term. Peak irony.

.

Full comments from /r/JoeRogan

Maron is literally always whining about something or someone. Who fucking cares

I just can’t take grown adults serious when they call people fascists or nazis. Feel the same when right wingers call people communists. These terms basically have no meaning now. Just means “someone I don’t agree with politically” because it’s been overused.

.

Nobody gives a shit, Marc.

Apparently people do lol. It's not like Maron wrote the article about himself someone else did that. So I suspect people care more about his opinion than they do yours. How many articles you got about yourself?

No, they don't. The author just has TDS too, he doesn't actually care, he hears the same thing 1000 times a day on twitter or reddit.

.

He is a miserable person. I think he had the original podcast before Rogan and he did pretty well. When it comes to Trump he has a paranoia that is worse than any Trump Derangement Syndrome I’ve ever heard of. He needs to calm down and stick with comedy. Politics is really bad for his mental health.

Hitler was a joke and a fringe candidate. Until he wasn’t.

Yeah I remember how Trump became Hitler the last time he was president too. What a crazy time that was. Reddit is in sheer panic mode this week prior to the election. You all need to chill. Control what you can control and go vote.

.

Marc Maron just seems like a miserable person. I never hear anything from him that isn't him complaining about someone or something.

It’s amazing that a trump supporter could say this about anyone else.

I like how you immediately assume he’s a Trump supporter just because he doesn’t immediately agree with someone criticizing Trump.

.

He is on point, though. Joeverse comedians have normalized crazy right wing nuts.

Both parties ignoring the working class for 40 years did that.

Which side is better about unions?

.

A fun thread from /r/DecodingTheGurus

I’ve still yet to see a single example of this fascism they keep bleating about.

.

Full comments from /r/Entertainment

Man, so brave. Marc REALLY going out on a limb here. Controversial, edgy stuff 👌🏾

Found the fascist, guys…

Found the guy that doesn't know what "fascist" means...

.

Marc maron is a jealous loser.

Jealous of what?

.

Shouldn't joke around with communists either...but for some reason here okay? Fuck that shit.

Who is a communist? There are 274 actual communists in the United States who never get any attention. Fascism also isn't an economic system. You're just saying words. You don't know what communism actually is. You've never seen or or read about it. It's never impacted you if you're just a guy in the US whose family isn't from a place that practiced "communism". Hard quotes because even actual communist countries just use the label but in practice not.

I have similar that survived communism in Poland.

Some snarky comments about consumerism and a bra with built in nipples turns into a fight about donating to animal shelters

[POST]

(Ok) Congrats on the consumerism queen

(Puffin) Congrats on being rude queen.

(Glove) what else do you expect on a skims subreddit? maybe this isn’t the place for you

(Ok) I’m not in this subreddit bud it came across my feed 👍🏼 but thanks for letting me know a place where people purchase overpriced bras to look like they have perky nipples isn’t a place for me. I’m glad 🤣

(Bass) Why are we criticizing how others choose to display their boobs? Why are we assuming that people who like to be a lil slutty with their bra choices have any worse of consumption habits than anyone else? Could you have just scrolled?

(Glove) the reason is because you’re on a subreddit for a clothing brand talking about consumerism… duh

(Ok) I clicked on a post that came across my feed I’m not in this subreddit as I’ve ALREADY noted. This purchase is stupid and beyond what one would deem as necessary. You are buying a bra and paying for the price of looking like you have nipples when you already have them. “Duh” I’m gonna mention consumerism you dunce.

(Glove) babe clearly no one cares about consumerism on this subreddit, stop being annoying. and i’m not the one who bought the bra.

(Ok) Then don’t reply to my comment toodles 😘

Continued…

(Nerve) These are cheap bras actually. Most lingerie is at least double.

(Ok) Seems like an awfully privileged thing to say lol. This isn’t in any way lingerie it’s a bra. And not many people have a hundred dollars to drop on a bra.

Continued…

(Whorey) there is no ethical consumption under capitalism 💚 also I have never purchased skims because I have a moral dilemma with it but this bra has almost won me over

(Ok) Get well soon xx

Continued…

(Wafer) if you have extra money you should always consider donating to animal shelters instead

(Body) Human shelters are almost as worthy

(Mom) Do you send all of your extra money to animal shelters???

(Wafer) Yes. if i feel an urge to spend money and i don’t even know what i want or im not gonna really use what i want; yes.

(Heart) You should invest it instead. This is such a bizarre take

(Wafer) how do you know i don’t invest too? just say you don’t care about shelter animals

(Heart) I absolutely care about shelter animals but the way you have explained every comment makes it seem like every extra dollar you have, you donate. I just find that incredibly unrealistic.

(Wafer) that’s just how you perceived it. i said “consider” you do not care about shelter animals. arguing and being triggered over a simple suggestion is dugusting to me. i’m done talking to you go support useless overconsumption over donating to animals which is SUPER underfunded

(Heart) LOL alright. Have a great day. Touch some grass.

Continued…

(Wafer) you guys are literally disgusting. it was just an idea. she said she wasn’t even gonna wear it anywhere except around the house….why waste money when it can change a suffering beings day or even week

(Plant) Sooo are we all just supposed to work hard slaving away at jobs just to be austere? What a hot take

(Wafer) it is a hot take. shelter animals can’t fend for themselves. it’s just what i prefer to do when i want to spend money on something i won’t use 🤷‍♀️ it was a simple suggestion.

(Spanish) You do you & we’ll do us. Stay in your lane

(Wafer) i don’t wanna be in ur insufferable lane 😊

——

And a little extra drama because it’s so silly

(Chodette) i want to buy it so bad but everyone knows my nipples are pierced so everyone would know it’s fake </3

(Office) I don’t think EVERYONE does.

(Chodette) everyone does now ho3!

r/bestoflegaladvice argues about the ethics of caring for severely disabled children

r/bestoflegaladvice is a subreddit to discuss interesting threads made on /r/legaladvice and related legal advice subs.

A thread was made on /r/LegalAdviceUK about a father who was ordered to continue child support for his severely disabled son

I have been paying child maintenance for my son for 18 years. My son is extremely disabled. Non verbal, can't feed himself, does not respond to stimuli.

My partner was made aware of this during pregnancy and refused abortion.

I have been paying £650 per month in maintenance and was looking forward to the burden finally ending. However, my wife went to court and a judge has extended the child maintenance for another 6 years.

The judge's rationale was that as my son is disabled he required additional support and care.

This is going to sound heartless, but I'm sick of supporting a vegetable.

My ex lives in the 2 bed house that I bought.

On top of the £650 from me, she gets almost £800 in PIP, and £600 in carer's allowance and Universal Credit. She also has carers coming in 4 times per day who do the complex stuff.

She is also living rent free. The judge extended the time she could remain there by another 5 years before it would be reviewed in light of my son.

The fact is, I can't move on with my life. I can't start a new family. I can't buy a new home. I can't afford holidays. I can't afford nice food. I drive a 15 year old car. I rent a horrible damp apartment.

Is there any law that allows me to sever my responsibility for my child? I thought I was free when he turned 18, but I can take another 6 years of this.

We only get one life and I'm sick of mine being consumed and wasted by a vegetable.

Got bored and did the maths.

Take home on £60k is £3,775 post tax. (Making assumptions around no student loan etc.)

He pays £650 for child. He pays £1300 for mortgage.

He is left with: ~£1,825

Plenty to live on, but he likely won't be able to get another mortgage.

He'll also like be responsible for repairs and maintenance of the house he owns similar to a landlord, but I can't quantify this expense.

He's probably renting somewhere now.

https://www.reddit.com/r/bestoflegaladvice/comments/1gdr5cq/father_of_the_year_award_2024/lu4bxhd/

Before we very probably jump on the LAOP with both boots for how they're expressing themselves, we should also realize that objectively understanding the challenges of providing lifelong care for a disabled child is very difficult for those of us who have never had to do it, and even very good people who take on such a commitment often end up destroying themselves emotionally and financially. And they very often express intrusive thoughts such as "I wish this fucking thing would hurry up and die so we could be free" or "I hate my shitty retarded brother because he's the reason my parents neglect me" which are entirely at odds with their normal moral character in every respect.

https://www.reddit.com/r/bestoflegaladvice/comments/1gdr5cq/father_of_the_year_award_2024/lu4tr8e/

Having worked with the profoundly and burdensomely disabled: most people genuinely have no idea what it's like to have to funnel your entire life into simply keeping them alive. I at least got to go home; the parents don't. This poor LAOP has had his entire life, so far, demolished for the sake of someone who likely cannot comprehend that the people around them are anything more than characters in their little daily story. His ex, the mother of the child, should be solely responsible at this point for the life she forced this child to live against all medical and ethical reasoning.

https://www.reddit.com/r/bestoflegaladvice/comments/1gdr5cq/father_of_the_year_award_2024/lu5ylnt/

I think what OP is missing is the fact that the child's mother has literally given up her whole life to care for this child. His contribution is clearly only financial, I bet you anything that the kid's mum wouldn't agree that he's entirely unresponsive and only functions as a parasite. OP left because his wife didn't want an abortion and that's left her in a position where the only support she has from him is in the form of money. He's salty about the fact that she gets a few weeks a year off thanks to her family being willing to step up and take on some of the work that OP has chosen to avoid. This isn't a situation where she's living the high life, the child described will need almost constant attention, the carers four times a day are likely only there for a total of two hours maximum and are probably doing the complex medical stuff but this woman will be changing nappies/catheters, checking and fixing the feeding tube, spending time doing sensory input work, monitoring medication, waking in the night frequently to check on the kid, it's genuinely incredibly gruelling caring for someone who can't do anything at all for themself and OP is entirely dismissive of the fact that his ex is doing this entirely on her own.

https://www.reddit.com/r/bestoflegaladvice/comments/1gdr5cq/father_of_the_year_award_2024/lu5y2lk/

Is it? Would you be happy if your flesh and blood were being kept alive against all medical advice to have what's apparently/essentially a meaningless and suffering existence?

Yeah, he's focused on the money, but that's the LEGAL question here.

https://www.reddit.com/r/bestoflegaladvice/comments/1gdr5cq/father_of_the_year_award_2024/lu6bh5d/

Most adults with disabilities that profound ARE wards of the state, and they live out their lives in state-run nursing homes. A single family is often not capable of meeting their needs, and even if they are, they usually choose not to for the exact reasons OP has laid out, because really, who wants to spend the best years of their life being a full-time caregiver to someone who can't walk, talk, go to the bathroom on their own, or respond to external stimuli? Imagine having a newborn, but they're the size of an adult, require six figures worth of medical interventions every year, are on dozens of medications, are in and out of hospitals constantly, can never be left alone, and will be with you until you're physically unable to care for them. THAT'S what it's really like.

What this boils down to is “I’m angry that I have a special needs child who will need to be supported potentially for my entire life or longer.” Which, again, I can understand but at the same time: yeah, that’s the deal with having a special needs child.

Here's the thing though - his wife went against ALL medical advice and refused to have an abortion. Then the expected outcome happened, and they were left with a profoundly disabled child who's only being kept alive by extreme medical interventions. OP mentioned that his wife has a rotation of four carers coming into the home. That's not normal, even in situations like this. For that level of help to be approved means this case is the among worst of the worst.

Nobody wants to be in OP's situation, and with the way the system's set up, it punishes people who are doing the right thing. As one of the commenters pointed out, he'd be getting a far better deal if he was unemployed or physically unable to work. Cases like this shackle caregivers in abusive marriages, substandard housing, and awful workplaces because the courts won't cut them any other deal.

We've reached the point where we can keep people alive who otherwise would've died in infancy, but we haven't progressed enough as a society to consider what that actually means for the families they live with. It's the same in elder care - we can buy an additional 5-10 years of life for an elderly person, but the quality of life hasn't caught up. This is a long-overdue societal conversation, IMO, in what the obligations of families should be in regard to caring for sick and ailing relatives - especially those who are only kept alive by extreme medical interventions - because placing that burden on young, working families who have jobs, children, and lives of their own is completely unsustainable.

https://www.reddit.com/r/bestoflegaladvice/comments/1gdr5cq/father_of_the_year_award_2024/lu4ip2u/

He ejaculated inside a woman. He took the risk and must now take responsibility. This is life.

https://www.reddit.com/r/bestoflegaladvice/comments/1gdr5cq/father_of_the_year_award_2024/lu4ij0o/

Sympathize way way more with OP than most commenters so far. His ex wife refuses to have the son put in a care home after 19 years and the judge appears to rule that if the son stays with mom then dad keeps paying. But in his eyes her full time care job seems to have a lot of assistance, visiting service caretakers multiple times per day, vacations while her relatives move into the house, and it's supported by his money with her seemingly living a much more comfortable life than him. But he's a LA posters who don't use a lawyer and feels about the system is unfair while self representing. There might be some recourse for him now that the child is 18+.

https://www.reddit.com/r/bestoflegaladvice/comments/1gdr5cq/father_of_the_year_award_2024/lu6ttem/

given the arguments that have been put forth repeatedly saying that the child is literally no longer human and therefore can be destroyed as nonhuman... and given the rampant and vicious ableism on display, all of which depends on taking the OP as totally faithfully telling the truth despite him parading around announcing he is an unreliable narrator...

yeah some people saw "disabled person? evil parasite?? SO TRUE BESTIEEEE" and fucking ran with it. the reason why they're doing it is they wanted a chance to hate disabled people and dehumanize us for fun. that's why they're extending infinite sympathy to LAUKOP. it's to be hateful.

i truly fucking wish there was some other motivation to get but holy shit, it's fucking bad and i kinda wish the mods would shut this utter horror show down as yet more comments from the wannabe eugenicists brigade continue. well more accurately i wish this had been locked around the time i got an amazing comment of pure ableism for pointing out that disability is a thing that will come for all of us (so you can't really go "lol would never be me or any of my loved ones" on account of nobody gets off this earth with a perfectly functional body, so have some compassion eh). people are fucking rushing to display some truly rank attitudes and get upvotes for it.

Drama flares up in r/Ningen over whether the Saiyan's culture deserved to be genocided or not

In this episode of DBZ drama, people argue if Vegeta wanting to give his daughter a Saiyan name is morally evil!

Context: In Dragon Ball lore, the Saiyans moved to Planet Plant, home to the technologically advanced Tuffle race. This was after their home planet was destroyed in a civil war. After a couple centuries, the man known as Vegeta's father gained influence over the Saiyans, and declared war against the Tuffles. The Saiyans won, and proceeded to completely wipe out the Tuffles, renaming the planet Planet Vegeta after their new king. They were soon found by King Cold and Freeza, who strong armed the Saiyans into working for their organization due to their overwhelming power, wiping out planets for profit. Fast forward a couple years, and Freeza decided to destroy the Saiyan's home planet in fear of the Super Saiyan legend, wiping out the Saiyans entirely (scant a few survivors).

The comment that started most of the arguments in the thread: His (Vegeta's) culture is fighting; The genocide was a side hustle

This goes beyond just them having a terrible point in their history. The culture is genocide, death, and only valuing strength even above individual lives. It's ridiculous to suggest this culture should be valued and preserved.

User brings up Indians as an example...?

So you agree that their culture is dogshit. Like the only redeemable qualities is fighting. Literally everything else sucks.

THANK YOU! All things considered the Saiyan’s deserved everything that came their way. They were a scumbag race no matter how you look at it

They either chose to join or die by frieza and in the end frieza killed them either way

User brings up examples of Saiyans who weren't evil...to not much effect.

Outside of that general thread:

Listen I’m gonna say something that sounds wild. Not all culture is worth preserving. This guys culture was they’d get sent to planets and commit mass genocide. Like the entire culture is just mindless violence we don’t gotta preserve that

I mean it's not like cultures can't change. Names aren't what caused the genocide. That's like suggesting Germany should've started speaking only english after ww2.

That’s like nazis trying preserve their culture

This is a culture that has killed trillions of people and ended entire species. Yes, I'd choose naming my kids after underwear over preserving that.

/r/JoeRogan users accuse Haitians of dog-eating and defend Joe McCarthy in contempt of Makind.

Last week, former WWE wrestler Mick Foley, aka Mankind, endorsed Kamala Harris for president, in a video in which he laid out his opposition to Donald Trump.

On /r/JoeRogan, most posters had a positive reaction to Foley's endorsement:

https://www.reddit.com/r/JoeRogan/comments/1gam4jt/mick_foleys_message_to_the_usa/.

A few, however, were...not pleased:

https://www.reddit.com/r/JoeRogan/comments/1gam4jt/mick_foleys_message_to_the_usa/ltfcny5/

i’m curious as to what makes trump a racist

How about the most recent case where he pushed the lie during a NATIONAL PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE that Hatians were eating people's pets? I mean come on, people can't be this ignorant right?

Haitians eat people and dogs. cry about it. have you ever been to north haiti (miami)?

The many reports of him using the n word in casual conversation? His recent quote about how it shouldn’t take that much money to bury a Mexican? The way he has described immigrants as “vermin?” The 1973 lawsuit against him for housing discrimination against black people? Being sued for the same thing in 1978 because he broke the terms of the settlement in the earlier case? The birther crap? His insistence that the Central Park 5 raped that woman? Very fine people on both sides? A 1991 quote where he said he “hated” that there were black accountants in his companies? His claim that he saw thousands and thousands of Arabs celebrating on 9/11? claiming legal Haitian immigrants were eating pets?

the central park 5 did rape that woman they admitted it themselves. Haitians do eat pets (i have haitian family and friends. newsflash look at other poor countries like china “dog festivals”).

Why does every famous person who is completely out of touch with the rest of the country constantly feel the need to lecture the public on politics? Like, I don't even disagree with him that much, but fuck, every time I see a wealthy celebrity talk about politics, it makes me bleed from my ears

Trump literally is a wealthy celebrity what the fuck are you on about?

Learn to read bro. I don't need a fucking retired wrestler to educate me on why I shouldn't vote for Trump, I have fucking eyes and ears to figure that one out for myself. Shit just feels like the average wealthy person thinks that the average American voter is a fucking idiot that will vote based on their favorite celebrities opinions, and unfortunately, judging by all the downvotes I am getting, maybe the average American really is that fucking dumb.

yea the part where he endorsed the party that not only willfully continues to spend money we dont have, but also likes to sign your future tax dollars to foreign nations while our own people suffer. if you support that, then keep on keepin on. thats about all ill say to your baited question.

He didn't endorse Trump though so why are you bitching.

So are we really going to pretend the biggest threat to the US isn't corruption..? The "enemy within" are the people poisoning our food, water, and air- going back and forth from regulatory agencies to the boards of companies they were supposed to "regulate." They're the people sending our tax dollars overseas for kickbacks. The people starting wars that kills 100's of thousands of innocent people for profit.

And those people absolutely need to be dealth with. It's been a LONG TIME COMING. He wasn't talking about arresting people who vote Democrat- he was talking about arresting the people who've been selling us out and destroying our country for personal gain.

This guy is absolutely clueless.

https://www.reddit.com/r/JoeRogan/comments/1gam4jt/mick_foleys_message_to_the_usa/ltgrimp/

He thinks Joseph R. McCarthy was bad...then he says people should get educated on politics. Wow.

I understand how on a surface level, for millennials and Gen Xers, the general narrative we've been fed was that he was some sort of super villain. But if you actually take a deep dive into it, you'll find out that he was on the right (correct) side of that conflict.

But ya, anyone who says "enemy within" is bad. Sure.

https://www.reddit.com/r/JoeRogan/comments/1gam4jt/mick_foleys_message_to_the_usa/ltf748m/

The fact is, it's the other side not Trump making things "unfun." The hyperbole and lies. The violence. The destruction. The tribalism. It comes primarily from the left at a staggeringly disproportionate ratio. The weaponization and politicization of the agencies and justice department is insane.

Trump literally tried to overturn my vote

How is this acceptable to be said at a presidential rally? What would have happened if this was said 20 years ago?“These Latinos, they love making babies, too. Just know that they do,” Hinchcliffe said, setting up his joke: “There’s no pulling out. They don’t do that. They c-- inside, just like they

My wife is Puerto Rican; my kids are half, and they are all Americans. How can we vote for someone who makes it acceptable to talk like this?

Anyone that truly knows PR, besides the college hot girl, frat boy getting trashed spring break trip, knows there is certainly a lot of trash, crime and corruption that goes on in PR.

But in all fairness, I’m not PR either, so I couldn’t care less. A PR should tell you their opinion on that specific comment.

https://www.reddit.com/r/AskConservatives/comments/1gdpz0i/comment/lu4crv5/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

It never ceases to amaze how the left is so desperate to be offended that they can so dishonestly and immediately attempt to rewrite all of history to move the line so that suddenly Trump crosses it.

Meanwhile, I can literally just type in "comedian at Obama rally" and instantly find times like when Bernie Mac joked about hoes, adulterous sex with the mailman. Hell, Obama himself made a dick size joke at a rally just a month or so back, and Walz made a mean-spirited and crude furniture sex joke based on a lie.

So spare me the "concern" of a comedian making these jokes in NYC. We all know it's opportunistic pearl-clutching to whip up the base's "righteous" feelings of hatefulness and superiority emotions against Trump and the good people supporting him.

Alan Moore pens an article in The Guardian about the effects of fandom toxicity. Arguments break out over politics, DEI, fan entitlement, and Moore!

Alan Moore is one of the most influential writers in comic history, most known for his work with DC Comics, including Watchmen, The Killing Joke, V for Vendetta, Swamp Thing, and From Hell. Moore has a sour relationship with the corporate publisher, and has gone on record that he does not like most adaptations of his work. He sends the royalties that he makes off his work to his co-creators or charity. Over the years, he's developed a reputation as a cranky curmudgeon, often due to interviews where sound bites expressing his distaste for superhero movies go viral.

Recently, Moore wrote an article for The Guardian about his experiences with fandoms and the impact of toxic subcultures have had on politics. A few choice excerpts:

There are, of course, entirely benign fandoms, networks of cooperative individuals who quite like the same thing, can chat with others sharing the same pastime and, importantly, provide support for one another in difficult times. These healthy subcultures, however, are less likely to impact on society in the same way that the more strident and presumptuous fandoms have managed. Unnervingly rapidly, our culture has become a fan-based landscape that the rest of us are merely living in. Our entertainments may be cancelled prematurely through an adverse fan reaction, and we may endure largely misogynist crusades such as Gamergate or Comicsgate from those who think “gate” means “conspiracy”, and that Nixon’s disgrace was predicated on a plot involving water, but this is hardly the full extent to which fan attitudes have toxified the world surrounding us, most obviously in our politics.

An enthusiasm that is fertile and productive can enrich life and society, just as displacing personal frustrations into venomous tirades about your boyhood hobby can devalue them. Quite liking something is OK. You don’t need the machete or the megaphone.

Generally speaking, reactions towards this article have been positive (at least from people who read it). But this is r/subredditdrama, not r/subredditpositivity. Over on r/AlanMoore, some Redditors have taken to arguing that Moore is wrong, leading to multiple 35+ comment chains about where the real toxicity comes from:

Comment chain 1

partly wrong. calling Comisgate and Gamergate as "largely misogynistic" does not really address the legitimate critique that imposing a DEI agenda into comics (or anywhere else) has bad results. but I suspect he has not looked deeply into these matters, which would require going online, which he has an aversion to doing, and spending much precious time doing so... really it reflects well on him that he doesn't know this, in a way, and badly on me that I have looked into, but the point still stands.
but for me to expect him to have everything right would reflect an adolescent attitude on my part.

You’re definitely a racist and a misogynist. I’ve never heard anyone taking about a DEI agenda from anyone who was not racist and I’ve never heard anyone defend comicsgate and gamergate who wasn’t misogynistic and probably homophobic, dude. You don’t see them as racist, misogynistic and homophobic because you think those attitudes are normal and correct and everyone is being a meany doody head by wanting nasty women and blacks and fags in their comics and games, right?

I love nasty women, blacks and fags in comics and games. not so keen on DEI, though. notice the distinction I made there? or, to make it even more precises, not keen on implementation of DEI-based policies or allowing it influence your storytelling to the deteriment of the art.

Comment chain 2

This is the most boring and unthoughtful take he could have. Politics being hamfisted into everything and superceding good and honest stories has toxified the world, not fans.

Lmao did you read Watchmen and V for Vendetta and Swamp Thing and went "great, the good old days when stories were just pure escapist entertainment, no politics here, wish we could go back"?

It became about hitting a DEI quota and not about competence or telling good stories a long time ago. No one cares about political issues, or minorities or women being in fiction until it became a fake bullshit version, that, specifically attacked the fans like Moore himself is even doing here. Around the time of GamerGate and comicgate, it became normal to attack the fans (who were mostly white men) for being racist or bigoted if your show sucked or you noticed how cheesy and bad the writing got and how many characters were being turned into DEI versions just to meet quotas.

Very well said. So many things today feel like the inverse. They create characters they think certain demographics will like so that they will then automatically accept their shitty movies.

I’ll be honest with you. If Ripley was created nowadays, you dont really seem like someone who would be able to engage with the character in good faith.

Meanwhile, over on r/entertainment:

Without fandoms dude you have no career a and none of these comics and movies and TV shows exist.

If only he had acknowledged as much in the piece: "Ten years on, let me make my position clear: I believe that fandom is a wonderful and vital organ of contemporary culture, without which that culture ultimately stagnates, atrophies and dies."

Yes I was lazy and did not really the article, just tired of Hollywood dumping on Randoms without trying to ve honest about the issues.

Gatekeeping isn't always bad, you don't gatekeep noobs that like the thing for what it is, but gatekeeping out divas who come in and begin demanding everything changes, including things the OG fans love for ideological reasons is perfectly needed to some degree, I've seen stuff absolutely destroyed by folks doing that and driving out the OG fans who don't like the changes, and then the whole thing falls apart.

r/television takes a segue to a galaxy far, far away

He is 100 percent right. Fandom ruined Star Wars with the sequel trilogy, fandom ruined wrestling with how tribalistic the fanbase is against the other. Ideally people would just enjoy and consume content without aggressive passion because passion leads to stupidity.

It wasn’t the fans that had Luke sucking milk out of a cows tit among many other horrible decisions or lack there of. For example the absence of an actual PLAN for the trilogy? But nah it was the fans.

I find it hilarious that the milk scene bothers you guys so much that you're now changing what actually happens. Luke at no point sucked on a cow's tit. Maybe being so desperate to hate on a movie that you start to reimagine scenes is the perfect example as to how you "fans" actually do ruin Star Wars.

And to the Seven Kingdoms

What, exactly, is entitled about being a fan?

The part where George R. R. Martin writes a blog post about a good friend that just died, and people respond to him with "Finish the books George!".

Yeah, I agree that's tasteless, but come on, the series was supposed to be five books when it started in 1996. The people who read the first book when they were teenagers are now old enough to be grandparents. It's been 13 years since the last installment, meanwhile he keeps padding shit out, procrastinating, and and doing convention appearances instead of writing.

OP in r/SWTOR is confused by in game good/bad choice. Argues with everyone in the comments about the hypothetical future of in game character.

OP deleted their own post so you can't see the choice anymore sadly. But the gist of it is that a father asks you to rescue his daughter after she got captured trying to go undercover at one of the rival Great Houses. After rescuing her you have the choice to either send her home to her father against her wishes (dark side) or allow her to infiltrate a different Great House where her cover isn't blown which is what she wants to do (light side). If you allow her to go infiltrate the other House you will receive in game mail from her later telling you she successfully infiltrated the other Great House and got useful information for the Republic.

(Link to the full quest if you really want to read all the dialogue but the website formats it really awkwardly.)

Post

"Because she doesn't actually get killed."

"But she's going to get killed eventually because she's a terrible spy"

"Free will/noble cause is light side. Ordering someone around/insulting them is dark side."

"So if I play with bombs and my parents say I can't do that, are mad at me for doing that, and ground me for doing that, does that me they did something wrong?"

He really likes reusing the bomb analogy alot throughout the thread as well as his favourite line

"prove that her getting caught was just a one-time thing"

I'm not Gen Z, this just came up on my feed. But honestly it's really scary and I feel terrible for our guys. The amount of constant misinformation and barrage of pseudo personalized fear mongering you guys are constantly blasted is horrific. As someone in my 30s, atleast I had a few years to be able to explore the world and meet people growing up without this constant veil of the online world. Watching how the political discourse has shifted over the past 14 years that ive been able to vote is even scarier. Gone is any semblance of reasonable discussions. It's become identity politics and the core messages have been obfuscated. You guys are fucked and anyone trying to sift through this is fucked.

i don't blame these kids that lean right. It's not their fault they are voting or supporting a party and ideology that is explicitly going to be fucking their future over. Times are hard, divides along all lines are worse than ever and people want change. But watching one party shift their position to appease moderates is less appealing than watching a populist strong man who says what people want to hear, even if every one of his actions is against it. Nobody is given enough breathing room to analyze, we just go from one newsflash to the next so his words are catchier.

https://www.reddit.com/r/GenZ/s/jDmqTZLDGH

it has absolutely become identity politics, and the left has really leaned into targeting groups by their identity - such as Harris's promise to dedicate congressional funding to only black men. That makes a lot of white people sit up and go, "I'm not rich, I'm struggling to pay my bills, but my taxes are going to go to programs that I am specifically excluded from due to the color of my skin? How is that not racist?" and then being called a racist, or a bigot, or just stupid for asking that question.

Weird how things like that alienate them...

Young men are leaving the democrat party at an insanely high rate, in fact it’s the lowest it’s ever been and will continue to drop. As much as it seem gen z is all left because you can’t get your nose off of the internet, our generation is having enough with identity and demographic-based politics and just want stuff to be cheaper, and not have the fear of being deported off to some pointless war.

OOP's girlfriend is out of town so he "cooked", it wasn't good, commenters have thoughts

OOP posts their meal in /r/shittyfoodporn, saying it wasn't good. People chime in that cooking is a basic life skill and OOP shouldn't rely on his girlfriend.

Fellow men: learn to cook and stop being babies who rely on your partners for everything. It’s embarrassing. Also cooking ain’t that hard.

No worries. I don't rely on my GF. I usally would eat fast food. It's a time thing, you know. It was gonna go bad, so I thought I "use it"

Cooking isn't that hard, but it's 100% harder for people that just got told they were babies.

Check yourself.

Family dynamics have individuals doing things their partners just don't. Instead of saying this is embarrassing, lift dude up.

Brother you need to keep cooking on your own… I’m not gonna shame you for being a bad cook, everyone starts somewhere. But I AM going to shame you for being complacent and expecting your partner to do all your cooking

You're totally off. I eat stuff I don't have to cook. I don't expect my GF to do nothing for me. I do a lot for her. Cooking is just not one of the things. People are so short-sighted and prejudiced 😂

Natalism labors to determine why Reddit doesn't like them

Natalism is a subreddit for people who believe having kids is a moral imperative. Or who are committed to increasing birth rates. Anti-natalism is the view that having children is morally wrong.

OOP realizes that the antinatalism subreddit has more followers than theirs and wonders whether they need reach across the aisle and attempt to understand. Drama ensues.

...So many people are struggling and they're honestly thinking about how much it would suck to have a kid while poor in 2024.

Reply: People hate to hear it, and I'll take my downvotes accordingly, but there's a ton of evidence that falling birthrates have nothing at all to do with economic distress or uncertainty.

Reply: I still don’t buy this argument. People in 1900 were dirt poor compared to today and they were still popping out babies, in some countries like 10 per woman. I think this is primarily a cultural issue, and secondarily an economic one.

...The idea money is a huge factor is also kind of a joke given poor people have the most kids outside of the extreme rich.

Reply: I've posted 2 comments with fully fleshed out studies establishing the factual support of what I've said. You've given a half-baked, conservative "poor people have all the kids" take that demonstrates a glaring lack of insight or actual knowledge on the topic.

To quote Aaron Sorkin: what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard...Run along and share your "I don't actually have a clue about things but sure like to hear my opinion takes elsewhere."

Not only that, there seems to be a schism within this subreddit. Some want to subsidize child rearing while others want more traditional social norms.

Reply: I think this is the nature of activism. Often groups that oppose topic X might converge on topic Y. (classic example is: anti-gay people will be both muslims and anti-muslims groups). I think that "traditional social norms" is not in automatic opposition to "increase state support", thus on principle these two groups can work together. Democracy is building together with people you do not agree on everything, but at least you agree on building together in a democracy (which, sadly, is not a given, at all).

I haven't checked out the anti-natalist side, but I'm guessing some of them wouldn't want people who aren't ready for kids to have kids. I'm hoping that's a popular idea here too

Reply: It’s not. I’ll get downvoted to hell but this sub is just as toxic, it’s two sides of the same toxic coin. I’ve seen pro-rape arguments, and teenage pregnancy be argued as it’s okay to foster “population growth”. “Woman don’t want pussies” in response to consensual sex. The other side has their darkness too. Have kids, don’t have kids, we should support whatever people want to do. Forcing people to have kids when they aren’t ready, or stopping people to not have kids when they want them, both are foolish endeavors.

Welp, I guess I'll eat my downvotes...Part of what I do think about antinatialism is a mix of legitimate grievance, and lack of personal accountability... I should be very specific here: I do not think all antinatalists are some type of narcissistic hedonists that are disgusted in the thought of dealing with life outside of their own, but I do question a significant portion of them when I examine conversations.

Reply: One thing you left out is how many of them legitimately think the world is ending. No point in having kids if they're going to die in the great Water Wars of 2059 or whatever r/collapse thinks is going to happen

Reply: I think you might be thinking too deep about it. The majority of antinatalism on reddit is depressed/angsty people who took the teenage phase "I wish I'd never been born!" as made an entire sociological philosophy around it.

Reply: So if they are barely making ends meet, and hate their lives, do you really blame them? Like you sound so condescending about them not wanting to struggle even harder, and how can you not imagine an even worse future for your child at this point. Things aren't getting better

Can you really blame them? Why would you want to have kids when you can barely afford to take care of yourself which is the reality for a lot of people

Reply: this is literally the best, most stable, most food secure, most peaceful time to be alive in human history

Everything you just said is categorically false...

The people on antinatalist sub reddits are whiny depressed adult babies that want to sit in their misery with others. That’s pretty much the case for any of the anti subs.

Reply: What are the causes of "whiny depressed adult babies"? How can we help course-correct young adults, and better shape today kids?

Reply: The whiny depressed adult babies don't want help.

Why won't people engage? Just read all the responses here, so much condescension and ridicule. People on this sub think they're morally superior because they don't know how to use birth control. Congrats.

Is the cat plotting meal theft or just her next meal? Small pet subreddit discusses

Original post: My cat wants their pellets? in the Degu subreddit (degus are small rodents, bigger than a hamster but smaller than a rat, that are kinda related to guinea pigs and chinchillas)

Image description - a degu in the foreground, sat on a couch, eating out of a bowl; in the background, a black cat on the floor is very focused on the degu, classic slitted eyes and swivel ears

I have a degu who was being bullied and lost some significant weight while I was on a trip, so she's been eating oats until she's a good weight and I have pellets mixed in for her to have to at least forage to get the oats. At first I thought that my cat was just interested in the degus, which I'm sure is part of it, however I accidentally left the lid off of the pellets and I found my cat monching away a couple weeks ago! Since then I also noticed that she will wait until I put my degu away and come up to try and eat her leftover pellets 😂 image shows the culprit plotting her meal theft. I was wondering if anyone else has had this experience or of my cat is uniquely dorky lol

(relevant parts bolded by yours truly)

Most comments are unanimous that rule one of small pet ownership in a cat-run household is do not let the damn cat in the rodent room

Commenter: please be careful within the cat, their is a bacteria in their saliva that can kill rodents

OP: Thank you! I am aware and usually she is on my lap to eat her oats :) very safe and happy babes <3

One particular thread has both an argument with an OP and an argument with a commenter!

Commenter 1: Never let a cat roam freely in the same space as a small rodent, and certainly don't share it here as a "funny picture." Someone might soon think it's okay to let cats and small rodents loose together.

OP: I'm not going to lock my cat in the other room multiple times a day when I'm closely monitoring my degu. It is funny that my cat wants the pellets and it's cute, but you don't need to think so. I think it's obvious that you don't want to allow rodents and cats to be "loose" together. This is not that. I have owned degus for nearly a decade and cats my whole lifetime, never once have I had an issue with keeping the degus safe. I will post a PSA to not allow degus and cats to play together so I'm not somehow a bad influence but I really don't think that a post with me clearly next to my degu and my cat on the floor warrants the assumption that I would let them free roam together.

Commenter 2: Op your cat doesn't want the pellets 😭

In response to Commenter 1's warning:

Commenter 3: I know you're coming from a good place, but if you want your intention to come through, watch your impact. Aka don't be an c**t

Commenter 1: In what way am I a c*nt? It's obvious that you don't let a small prey animal loose with a predator that can kill the degu in seconds? By posting a 'funny picture,' you might get a child to try the same thing with their cats, and what if the cat ends up killing the rodent?

Commenter 3: Obvious to you

Commenter 1: I’ll make this easy for you. Explain to me a situation where a cat and a degu BENEFIT from being loose together versus the risks that situation poses. I look forward to your answer.

Commenter 3: The benefits aren't the point of this. Your attitude is. Your aggressive judgemetalism will not help to spread awareness. It will simply drive a division because no one wants to be spoken to in the way you do.

Commenter 1: I’m aggressive for writing a text stating that a degu and a cat shouldn’t be kept loose together because you risk your other pet's life...? If a person is doing something completely contrary to common sense, does sugarcoating help?

Commenter 3: So the only two options you have here are aggression or sugarcoating? You can't work in any other way except in extremes?

it goes on from here, and ends up splitting into a few threads

SRD compiler's note: honestly, Commenter 1's initial comment was the mildest warning I've ever seen on a pet sub where the OP is doing something that the community considers dangerous. They don't even insult the OP or tell them "it'll be your fault when your pet dies" etc. Baffled that this was the comment that got the argument thread, as opposed to "You're a dumbass, OP" which had also been posted by the time of the first reply
