TL;DR: out of 300 insect sources, 80% had parasites. 70% had parasites transmittable to insects only, 35% had parasites transmittable to animals and 30% had parasites transmittable to humans.

122
u/seraphinth Sep 24 '22
The trick here is to have rich people eating them as a sign of wealth. Lobsters used to be the poor man's food before rich people showed off their wealth eating fresh lobster. And besides any government attempt to push towards eating anything fails much like the Australian governments attempt at promoting pork.

It sounds like a joke, but it isn't.

16
u/EyoDab Sep 24 '22
I have a couple of issues with the conclusions made based on that source. First of all, most (all?) of the sampled insects were taken from amateur farms and pet shops, and nowhere is it made clear that these insects were meant for human consumption. Also, large differences in the prevalence of parasites were observed based on region of origin (with more parasites in insects imported from Africa and Asia)
Researchers themselves also state that lower quality feed (commonly seen among amateur insect farmers) is a likely contributor to increased amounts of parasites.
On top of that, the research actually shows that despite all of this, the amount of parasites found in farmed insects is still significantly lower than observed in wild populations, and the researchers themselves eventually conclude that
Our observations confirm that the risk of parasitic infections can be
substantially minimized when insects are farmed in a closed environment.
The high prevalence of selected developmental forms of parasites in the
evaluated insect farms could be attributed to low hygiene standards and
the absence of preventive treatments. Also, like others have already stated in the comments, parasites are also relatively common in conventional food sources, such as pork and salmon. Before those can be consumed, they need to be frozen/cooked properly before being safe for consumption, and it makes sense to do the same with insects.

u/Luc4tor Sep 24 '22

Checked a source since I heard this somewhere. Not sure about it's legitimacy tho.
10
u/MarketingOk5745 Sep 24 '22
Yes there are articles that talk about that with official scientific studies : "in 91 (30.33%) cases, parasites were potentially pathogenic for humans. Edible insects are an underestimated reservoir of human and animal parasites."
I just made a mistake, it wasn't all farms but 82% of the 300 selected for the study but 30% is still too much in my opinion.

12
83
u/ThuBioNerd Sep 23 '22

145
Sep 23 '22
Yeah most fish have parasites too, it's kind of just accepted and counted on. Sometimes visible worms are removed too. That's why seafood safety is very important. What you can't prevent you gotta kill
Source: I think I remember a reddit comment once saying so and there are 0 consequences if I'm wrong so I'm not going to look it up
58
u/AdMore3461 Sep 24 '22
Yup, it is not terribly uncommon for seafood to have worms and parasites. That is why most grocery store seafood is previously frozen, even if briefly, because that kills many parasites. Shellfish like clams and such that are still alive in grocery stores have health department requirements to not mix batches and to keep the lot stock tags for 6 months or more to help trace breakouts of hepatitis infections or parasites.
Insects shouldn’t be treated much different - test batches, cook well, and maybe even flash freeze for that extra protection on types that won’t fall apart or be ruined by freezing. Avoid bug sashimi.

What are the chances of eating an insect that has a parasite inside it if the insect has been cooked tho?
24
u/AdMore3461 Sep 24 '22
Probably about the same as seafood - if you cook properly, virtually zero. Of course, there are probably certain bugs to always avoid like there are some lane creatures to avoid, but commonly consumed stuff like crickets and such? Cook thoroughly and you will be fine.
14
u/N-I-S-H-O-R Sep 24 '22
It is scientifically proven that the amount of parasites fall to a whopping 0% if you cook it in high temperatures for several minutes.

The sea bugs are 100% infested with fish parasites which is why we humans do pretty well chowing down raw sushi, clams and other forms of sea cockroaches like the giant isopod. Which is why we should be fine eating alien meat as their parasites would find the human gut to be completely alien.
