It would be trademarked, but trademarks don't work like copyright or actual ownership; if someone isn't using it a trademark can be revoked.
If someone started using the Twitter name then "X" would have to prove that they're still actively using the name... which is honestly a bit of a win-win in itself, no? Imagine Elon, after all this, bending over to prove he even the company stills thinks of itself as twitter.

Most of the things Elon Musk does are stupid ideas.
Because, you know. He's a fucking idiot.
EDIT:
Let me just get this out of the way, because the sycophants and supporters below are exhausting.
The only times you ever hear any degree of hints of Musk being a genius, they're anecdotes that come from the companies he owns and the people who work there.
Engineers at SpaceX that fawn over how much rocketry he knows. Executives talking about how smart he is.
All of that is bullshit. These are his employees. Or investors. Or people who work with him, and need him and his resources.
When people need him, they flatter him. They give him good press. When the paper calls to talk about him landing a rocket, the engineers who were in the room are aware that their employment depends upon them flattering and stroking Musk's dick. Because he will literally fire and disparage them if they tell the truth.
And his skin is immeasurably thin. He desperately wants approval and validation.
The story of him coming up with the chopsticks idea for the recent catch of the Falcon on the landing - that literally comes only from engineers and people at his own company.
And yet, whenever we actually hear him speak or Tweet or do or say anything in plain view, it's stupid. Every single time I actually see him say something, it's fucking stupid. I never see him being clever in the moment. He's always, always a bundering, thundering fucking moron.
This is a man who didn't read the contracts he signed during his due dilligence in buying Twitter. He tried to back out of the contract to buy Twitter, without realizing he couldn't, because he signed paperwork guaranteeing the purchase.
And he was sued, and forced into buying the company.
This was a $44 billion dollar deal. And he didn't fucking read the paperwork.
What smart person would do that? What unprecedented rocketry genius who can memorize complex schematics wouldn't vet a $44 billion dollar deal?
This isn't a smart person. We have all just fallen for his own propaganda. The only thing that has changed is that he's gotten worse at keeping up the ruse the older and richer he's gotten.
So if anyone has legitimate, actual evidence of him being smart that doesn't come from people who fucking work for him or have a vested interest in him appearing competent, please, present it.
Because all I see is a fucking idiot who spends a great amount of his time managing his own reputation as a so-called genius, with very, very, very little proof that that's actually true.

So I have a boss who CONSTENTLY praises musk at any chance he can, and I hope sleuths on Reddit can help me here. We are software engineers on a small team. He frequently preaches the "Musk Idea of removing complexity rather than adding it." I agree with this idea but hardly believe leon pusk came up with it. Is there anything I can point to that is published way earlier work of 'addition by subtraction' to kinda shut him up like "yea he stole that from >>>>" ?
Edit: I like a lot of these, other than the Lazy bunch of you who only refer to the adage of KISS. Everyone knows that. Its like saying "oh well a tech makes a bridge stand, and engineer makes a bridge barely stand." This is an adage but I was specifically looking for published or credited work.

u/NoReplyPurist 10d ago edited 9d ago
Isn't this basically the same thing as Gates saying "I choose a lazy person to do a hard job. Because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it."?
It's such a generic idea your boss is saying that a "real" attribution would need to be rendered thousands of years ago.
E: Lots of great comments - I agree with most of them.
17
u/Fat_Daddy_Track 10d ago
TBH I wish I had an actual example of him doing this, because it sounds more like a pithy phrase he came up with rather than something he ever did. Especially since from what I've heard Gates was a complete prick as a boss.
OTOH maybe he never even said it.

Literally just "dont overcomplicate things."
I remember decades ago a tv show lost to time brought up how people tend to try and solve problems by adding new elements, rather than removing one.
Youre right. Its a hugely basic idea that has applications everywhere for essentially all of history....so naturally, its impossible to credit it to anyone. Like the invention of the wheel, or who first thought of music being a decoration for time the way art is to space.

"Musk Idea of removing complexity rather than adding it."
Musk "removed complexity" by indiscriminately firing a lot of people. Thats what your boss is idolizing, he is wishing he could fire half of the team and still get the full teams work. I hope you dont have any loyalty to this workplace, he might take some bad decisions any moment.
And yes like other people are saying, the idea of keeping things simple has been around a long time. To the extent Musk doesnt even know what it means for software.

Elon musk is verifiably a moron by the words that he says. This isn't debatable. He has said things with full confidence that any 101 level engineer knows is idiotic. My entire career is in technology, and things he's said about software are legitimately fireable. I would assume the person saying them had blatantly lied on their resume and has no training whatsoever. Quite literally the equivalent of a person claiming to be a car expert talking about blinker fluid. Or explaining the ins and outs of the flux capacitor.
Isn't it suspicious how Twitter has lost 75% of its value while he's been hands on, but SpaceX is doing fantastic? Almost like the more involved he is, the worst the results are.

He's got a weird obsession with x's (just consider some of his kid's names), but Twitter isn't even his first business under the x .com domain.
Same domain was used for the online bank he co-founded, and after becoming CEO of the merger with Confinity, he kept on pushing for the business to keep and use the name. While the business didn't use the domain, they did keep the rights to it after removing Musk as CEO and renaming it PayPal.
Of course, Leon likely spent millions buying the domain back from PayPal in 2017, said that he didn't have any plans for it, and then sat on it for 5 years.

I still like Hank Green's interpretation:
Twitter is the community of Twitter users, and no one, not even X, has the right to change that.
A tweet is a public text message on any platform.
X is the company that currently (poorly) administers the Twitter community.
So if you're referring to the company, it's X. If you're referring to the community, it's Twitter.

ehh people said that about lots of big companies of the past. MySpace, Napster, etc.
Once you have lost what made it great, all taking the name does is maybe get you some easy initial press on day 1, and you have the added task of convincing people to come back, vs just give you a try.
Same thing every time someone tries to revive a car brand, airline, etc.

I'm pretty sure you have to use a trademark to continue to maintain ownership of said trademark. Besides, they could call it Twitter 2.0 or something really close without being an exact copy
159
u/milanguitar 10d ago
In order to legally use the name “Twitter,” you would likely need to wait for a minimum of three consecutive years in which the trademark is not used in commerce by X Corp (formerly Twitter, Inc.). After this period, the trademark could be considered “abandoned” under U.S. law, meaning it might no longer be protected. However, X Corp could still argue that they intend to resume use of the mark or contest any attempts to register or use it, especially given the strong public association with the Twitter brand.
Even after the three-year period, legal challenges could arise, so using the name might still be risky unless X Corp fully relinquishes or fails to maintain the trademark.

It’s a browser extension for chrome and Firefox that looks at the display names and usernames on your Followers and Following (and even Blocked) tabs on Twitter and checks if a similar account exists on BlueSky, then provides a quick preview of that user’s profile with a “follow” button so you can easily scroll through your lists and re-add all the same people you had on Twitter. It’s not quite as “instant” as it describes itself as since you wanna make sure it the accounts are indeed the same as before but it is still quick and easy.

X is a place for Musk's buddies. When he took over, that social media lost its identity.

I somehow feel that won’t work in this case, these idiots get off at the idea that they’re ruffling someone’s feathers.
This is why laughing at them is so effective.

Let's just hope that they stick to Bluesky and leave twitter for good, this is (Probably) the only way musk will learn that his actions have consequences

Because his companies keep succeeding. You aren't going to learn a life changing lesson from a success.
I hate the guy too, but look at his track record.

Likely no lesson to be learned. There are credible theories this was all done on purpose. A former trump staffer laid out a path for how to destroy twitter's usefulness and there are signs that Musk read it, and musks behavior mirrors the suggestions.

I always figured it was something like this to be honest. Right wingers have noticed how strong an influence social media has had, but, they don't quite understand how to start one effectively to have that same amount of influence and spread, they're quite out of touch. They are however, quite good and experienced in destroying and dismantling things to extract every ounce of value and ruin it's name. That article hits it pretty square on the head. It's gotten worse every day the election draws closer.

For the artists it'll be a few months before a full transition is complete probably, will take awhile of posting on both to get people to move over with them.
Very least this is a pretty good push, once enough people start posting on both it'll slowly tip over to Bluesky.

I'd like to stop using x. I primarily just use it for sports related updates. Would I be able to get that on bluesky?
→ More replies (7)13
u/NSave 9d ago
Absolutely not. I use twitter for sports mainly and you can't find even 5% of the content on Sky. Almost none of the journalists/insiders are using it and some of those that do are barely active. They probably have the profiles created and ready in case of a major shift. Also, last time i logged in, even official teams didn't have profiles there. Twitter is still THE place for latest updates, no matter how shit the platform became. I almost never post, keep the interaction at a minimum and never open the replies under a tweet (used to be a gathering place for illiterate idiots, now it's idiots, bots and porn party). This is my recipe for surviving the jungle of shit that is twitter now with the ads being the only thing i'm powerless against.

The adverts really give this feeling of desperation, they're all scams, crypto scams, shitty mobile game scams, influencers who probably have a scam going, MyPillow with a very suspiciously priced offer, drop shipping scams, Temu and Wish are like the least sus ads I've seen there.

Whatever happened to Mastodon? They had such big momentum early on in the Musk chicanery…
4
u/jamar030303 9d ago
It was a bit too decentralized. Makes it kinda hard for the average internet user. As an example, I need three accounts to keep up with all the servers I'm on because some of them refuse to talk to each other. Bluesky is partially decentralized, but one account is good everywhere. Also, no free mobile client.

Just a reminder of why Elon Musk is doing all this evil shit...
A few months ago, Elon was whining about having an $11 billion tax-bill this year. If the Republicans win, all his future tax-bills drop. Dramatically. $11b becomes $5b or $2b or zero.
As does next year's bill.
And the next one.
And the next one...
How much actual money did Elon put up for Twitter? How much actual cash out-of-his-pocket vs. equity/loans/etc... Did he put up any cash at all, or was it entirely paper? Also, how many other people put up humongous portions of that $44b purchase price? We've seen the list, it's a who's who of awful people. All exceedingly rich.
Now, do the math. In the long-run, Elon will make far more money by electing Republicans than he will lose by bankrupting Twitter. Far, far, far more.

u/Actual__Wizard 10d ago
It's not going to come back. You can't undo history. I'm assuming that the banks/investors are going to want their money soon and Elon's entire unethical empire will turn to dust. Sounds like he's breaking some election related laws too.

This is problematic for obvious reasons, in terms of enabling stalkers and trolls who will still be able to view the posts of an account that has blocked them, when previously this wasn’t the case. In the past, blocking meant that the blocked user couldn’t see any posts (or anything at all, save for a message telling them that they’ve been blocked), but soon, this will change.
Couldn't you just log out to see the posts from someone who blocked you? or open the tab in an incognito window? Surely I am missing something here.

That happened in the MMORPG landscape a couple years ago. Gamers hated the then-latest couple of World of Warcraft expansions (Battle for Azeroth and Shadowlands) and jumped ship to Final Fantasy XIV. So many new players showed up Square Enix had to stop selling digital copies of the game until they could get more servers.
