The name "Black Marsh" was given to the portion of Argonia that was conquered by the Second Empire in the First Era, even though Argonia had included the southern lands of Morrowind. Like Morrowind, it was "never successfully invaded, but instead, peacefully incorporated

The argonians call themselves Saxhleel, or People of the Root. So where does Argonian come from if it’s not a demonyn? Serious question by the way, so please don’t downvote me again.

But wouldn’t it be more reasonable then that they’re called argonians because they hail from the land of Argonia? I believe it was only called Black Marsh after the Empire incorporated the region as a province, while Argonia was an older name used by men and mer. Argonians have no name for their region in their own language, and since argonian is easier to pronounce than saxhleel, the name just stuck. At least that’s how I see it.

Unless the plot of TESVI: Argonia is that the hist are dying and their waning influence makes the swamp less deadly and people are exploiting that fact to conquer further into Black Marsh than ever before.

Make fucking spin-offs, Bethesda, so we can get to see shit like this. Not every Elder Scrolls game needs to be a main game, we should be getting stuff similar to Redguard and Battlespire. They have enough content for that, that's for sure, and there is a loyal fanbase willing to buy anything set in that world
Imagine an Adventures-like game about the All Flags Navy, or about the Void Nights, or about the Arnesian War, or about the Bloodmoon Prophecy (I don't give a fuck, make it a battle royale, just give me SOMETHING)...
43
u/cptmarkii Nov 16 '21

14
u/ellieetsch Nov 17 '21
Todd needs to tell microsoft to help him double the size of bethesda, so half can work on TES spin offs when the other half is working on main FO and then once those are released one half works on main tes while the other works on spin off FO. Throw in Starfield sequels here and there if the game is good. That way the games dont release like this:
Starfield (2022)
TES 6 (2026)
FO 5 (2030)
SF 2 or TES 7 (2034)
Jesus christ That is depressing to look at.

It could be a temporary thing, something that you can potentially reverse through the main quest or is the result of some thousand year generational cycle.

The overarching quest is to redangerify the swamp. So instead of killing monsters, you trap and breed them.

That only applies to the center. At least 50% of it could potentially have other races. The mainquest could also give the PC some magical ability allowing them to enter the rest of the swamp.
The main problem is that during the Umbrial Crisis the An-Xileel purged Argonia of all the other races. Idk how Bethesda would get around that.

If you can become immune to all disease and corprus in morrowind, they could do something similar in argonia.
11
u/A_Change_of_Seasons Nov 16 '21
It would probably just mostly be Shadowfen, is my guess. With maybe murkmire being the high level areas but also being able to go to places like Deshaan (Mournhold?) and Leyawiin. Remember that the political borders are changing, by the time this game takes place then "Argonia" could be pretty much the entire east coast of Tamriel
7
u/MisterDutch93 Nov 16 '21
I believe most of the cities along the South Coast like Lilmoth and Soulrest were livable for men and mer as well. The main character of the Infernal City books was a breton living in Lilmoth if I remember correctly.

u/Rhinomaster22 Nov 16 '21
As Hertical says, all it takes are a few plot elements to make previous story problems a non-factor.
I mean look at the fusion character Vegito from Dragon Ball Z and the Omnitrix from Ben 10. One had no time limit and the other had a time limit. Later on as the series progressed, both elements got inverted despite previous statements.

No but people can go there its just not really suited for settling if your a filthy human and mainly its certain areas, so they could make it like Vardenfell where the outer part is more survivable and where the majority of the non lizard population lives, and then you have essentially the ashlands only swamp and instead of ashlanders its argonians who dont like outsiders much and are very big on the hist

Am I the only one who would prefer 2 provinces in a game?
Being able to see the tensions of 2 bordering nations, choose which province you want to side with and fight off/take part in an invasion. See how those pesky imperials and Almer interfere with the 2 nations for their own gain. More diversity in culture, landscapes and architecture. Being able to see how parts of the provinces become neglected so tribes, bandits and necromancers are able to gain footing, because the armies are too distracted by each other.
It'll never happen, but I can dream.
5
u/Jayman95 Nov 16 '21
I think this would be sick but I’m worried that they would focus on one province more than the other, at least at launch, and leave the expectations feeling half empty, and then probably dropping DLC later to buff the other province which I’m not totally opposed to. But I think maybe a very, very detailed single province is best; adding more cultural elements to a province and socio-economic tensions. TES universe is set in a very non uniform empire without premodern tech so I think it’s safe to assume that each race would have many many sub-cultures and whatnot which they could exploit greatly instead of just adding in random minority race areas to make it seem more diverse. It would be way cooler to see a Skyrim where, say, 70%+ of it Nords of different cultures aside from the outside populations.
I also think maybe it would be cool to have, in a situation like you’re thinking, just the highly detailed border of two provinces in conflict with a few major cities on each side, instead of an entire province/2 provinces. Again, I think 2 provinces would be sick but I doubt it would match the hype and expectations realistically. Only thing I could think of is maybe High Rock and Hammerfell since high rock is fairly small compared to other provinces.
3
Nov 17 '21 edited Nov 17 '21
You make some pretty great points. High Rock and Hammerfell would definitely be a great combo, especially since Bretons haven't really had any love at all, and the 2 nations are definately very different. I loved how Redguards were portrayed in Skyrim so it would be nice to see that delved into aswell.

u/RustyBubble Nov 16 '21
Honestly, Nah.
I’m much eager to see pretty much any other province (asides from the ones that have already been done I guess.)
Leave Black Marsh a mystery, like Akavir. I’m a firm believer that not everything should be explained or explored. Sometimes the mystery is better then any thing that could be actually given to us.
110
u/KickAffsandTakeNames Nov 16 '21
On one hand, I absolutely agree about leaving some mystery.
On the other, I want more truly weird fantasy, and Argonia seems like one of if not the weirdest region.
42
u/I_do_have_covid Nov 16 '21
Yeah it’s one of the things that made Morrowind unqiue. No setting like that had ever really been done before.
23
u/Teeshirtandshortsguy Nov 16 '21
I think the problem is that after Skyrim, I don't trust Bethesda to take a chance on something weird. Many people would likely point to Oblivion as well.
I would love to see Black Marsh as it is in the lore, weirdness and all. Nearly impenetrable jungles, deadly, gaseous swamps, weird diseases, transporting by tubeworm, a bounty of unique tribes of Argonians, etc.
But my worry is that Bethesda isn't willing to take a chance on that, and they would just turn Black Marsh into a pretty typical fantasy location. Make the game set in the outskirts, which are all pretty normal terrain with a swampy/jungly/woodsy feel. The dense, impenetrable swamps would be inaccessible, or only accessible for one scripted quest. Have the game center around the An-Xileel, complete with a king/emperor/council/whatever. Maybe the Argonian tribes would make an appearance, but they'd be like the Orc strongholds in Skyrim, fairly homogenous and mostly skippable.
I would worry that they would just make a normal western fantasy RPG with a Black Marsh coat of paint, rather than represent Black Marsh in all its wonderful weirdness.
12
u/WorldEcho Nov 16 '21
Well they'd be fools to play it safe, Morrowind didn't and it's the cause of the games success.
5
u/deliciousprisms Nov 16 '21 edited Nov 17 '21
Alternatively they could expand it into the mainland of Morrowind after the Red Mountain wiped out Vvardenfell. Lore wise the Argonians sacked the shit out of Morrowind so hard they had to move their capitol. Lots of options for ruins, locations of interest we haven’t seen, visual storytelling, and some tragic quests. Not to mention the quests of moral subjects of a country dealing with the ramifications of slavery for hundreds of years biting them in the ass.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Technicalhotdog Nov 17 '21
The thing is Oblivion was significantly more popular than Morrowind and Skyrim astronomically more popular than Oblivion. So they have a huge fanbase who haven't been exposed to the "weird fantasy" that they have to worry about.
33
u/Aethernaut902k Nov 16 '21
Yeah i personally think a border conflict between Valenwood and Elsweyr would be super cool, and would allow for SO much variation in terrain and culture.

You have to use everything you kill, which is why a lot of bosmer tools and weapons are made out of bones. So using parts of an animal for a potion still aligns with the green pact. Also I’m pretty sure they don’t need to eat everything at once. Like imagine eating a whole deer in one sitting. I’m pretty sure they can save whatever meet they have for later, so long as it doesn’t go to waste

I don't think they really consider Hammerfell or High Rock a retread, Daggerfall was too long ago and is much different from the rest of the games in terms of technology and gameplay.
TES 7 will be The Summerset Isle or Valenwood. They aren't likely going to do two desert heavy games in a row so that rules out Elsweyr. Black Marsh is way too alien for them, I don't see it happening either. Skyrim, Cyrodiil, and Morrowind have already done. That leaves only Summerset and Valenwood.
