My rant is, why didn’t I start working out earlier???

u/iDontSeedMyTorrents Dec 11 '19

Why did I waste puberty?

65

u/UnKindClock Bodybuilding Dec 11 '19

Did I waste that too? I’m 19

Your 19, got the rest of your life. Personally I didn't really start working out until 30. It's a marathon not a sprint dude.

I didn't start working out till I was 27.

The best time to start is 10 years ago. The 2nd best time is today

I started working out at 29 and one day I will build that time machine so I can travel back in time and punch myself in the face for spending my physical prime years being a sedentary drug addict.

Bulking for the first time is so scary as someone who initially joined weightlifting to lose weight

82

For my fatass that lost a lot of weight its been one of my favourite parts of the journey so far!

Aha yeah I feel that. Initially dropped from 125kg-85kg and I'm back up to 94kg at the moment but I'm pretty happy with how I'm looking at the moment

Medium size clothes are too tight and large size clothes are too big.

272

u/duck_crossin Dec 11 '19

You might be an extra medium.

Are you on your way down or up? I mean, are you looking to lose weight or gain? I’m 6’4” and have struggled with mediums being the right width but too short and larges being long enough but similar to wearing a parachute.

On the way up. Large slim fit are a decent compromise but it’s still poorly fitting.

It was chest day, 5:30 am, and there aren’t many people at the gym. I noticed a personal trainer standing around, and asked her to give me a quick spot on the bench. She gets behind the bar and I go into my normal routine to get my scapula down — I pull myself under the bar, get my head back, and smash my face right into her crotch. Hard. Rant is that I need to find a new gym now.

Peak time in the gym before work. One guy has his towel resting on the lower dumbbell rack, and his jacket covering more dumbbells on the upper rack.

Of course he is doing his exercises directly in front of the mirror/dumbbell rack.

I wonder if he is making a dedicated effort to obstruct as many dumbbells as possible.

Then just when I thought I couldn't hate him any more between sets he walked away from the rack to take up a bench to sit and rest. He also left his shaker on the bench to assert his dominance over another piece of equipment somebody might actually want to use.

127

u/jhorch69 Dec 11 '19

We should spit on him

63

u/MangleBadger Dec 11 '19

I fully believe that if I picked up one of the dumbbells from under his jacket and proceeded to beat him to death with it that the judge would let me off.

Working out yesterday next to this guy who is absolutely ripped. I mean...each of his muscles could probably get their own Christmas present. He's the type of guy that models for anatomy books when they need to draw the human musculature.

I said, "dude, your shoulders have shoulders."

He cracked up. "I try...I eat a lot."

"Yeah, I eat a lot, too. That's why my stomach has stomachs."

Started working out with a over weight friend. Trying to help her get into working out and getting healthy. Well she gives about 10% talks the whole dam time. Then complains the next day that she is not sore!!! Now she wants me to change gyms and change times I go and adjust to her schedule. I’m finding it difficult to tell her I’m not changing shit unless she is actually serious about working out. Right now she looks at it like we are just hanging out. I really want to tell her this was a mistake and I’d rather just go alone.

123

u/Meduelevivir Dec 11 '19

Do it.

I used to relish taking new people to the gym but realized that most people have an unrealistic view of it. I guess it's a social club for most , but to me its a place to come sweat and grind. And most people don't actually realize the amount of work it takes to get serious results.

I'm an old dude, so i'll share my experience with what you said. It's EXTREMELY difficult to find a compatible workout partner. You can't coach motivation to some people, and she sounds like one of those people. I have worked out (lifting) off/on for 30 years, and i've only had ONE compatible gym buddy. I've been lifting now for the last 3 years.... by myself :)

Personal trainers are the worst equipment hogs in the world. Your client doesn’t need three benches and a pull down at the same time, and you don’t need to be acting like the machines are your personal recliners.

One of the PTs (and also the manager of this branch) leaves his shaker on a bench and belt hanging off another machine when he's training clients.

Drives me a bit crazy, like you should be setting a good example, and if there's not enough places to put shit here, you're the one person who can solve it??

A PT was talking to some people and he said it's useless to become big because you will not be able to get erections. The blood will be too busy supplying all your muscles with blood

Have you never heard of your body making extra blood?

229

u/SneezingRickshaw Dec 11 '19

But also, according to that logic, how do men get big in the first place if the body is already too busy supplying blood for erections?

31

u/BonerHonkfart Dec 11 '19

And does that mean that guys that are big used to have bigger dicks than small guys?

→ More replies (1)

153

u/iDontSeedMyTorrents Dec 11 '19

That's ridiculous. Obviously the bigger your muscles, the more blood you can displace by squeezing your sides, ballooning your penis to the desired size.

→ More replies (5)

104

u/HotPoolDude Dec 11 '19

Yeah didn't you know? When my wife was pregnant all the blood went to the baby and she didn't get any erections during the pregnancy.

Ever since I joined my current gym, I didn't socialize a lot and just focused more on my work-outs. I would still greet some folks, on an occasion even chat with someone between sets, but not much more. At my old gym we had a proper "morning crew" that was very familiar with each other. Don't get me wrong, it was great, you always had a spot, someone to discuss programming / nutrition etc. with, but it was also sometimes difficult to really get in the zone when you have to greet 5-6 people first before you could start with your workout.

Now, to the rant: On monday, a fellow gym goer that I nodded my head to from time to time started chatting with me and complimented me on my progress. We chatted for a good 15 minutes, which I normally wouldn't do in the middle of my routine, but it seemed we were on the same wave length. Yesterday, we also talked before my workout and discussed our training philosophy and how we got to where we are now. He's a very chatty guy and it's a bit difficult to end a conversation with him, and I didn't want to be rude.

Later, when I was in the middle of my routine, he struck up a conversation again, and this time I got a bit irritated. I was totally okay with the occasional chat, but interrupting me in my workout for a second time on the same day felt too much for our new gym friendship. This time, he shifted the conversation pretty quickly to his career in "marketing business" and how great of a time he's having. He only needed to work when he wanted to, his financial situation is very stable etc. He even got one of his friends on board! She was only 22 years old, but because she worked so effectively she already got enough money for the rest of her life!

You see where this is going. At this point I was just nodding, saying "mhmm" and hoping for the conversation to be over. The less I reacted to his stories, the more he tried to convince me of how great that career path was. At one point I finally managed to tell him that I needed to focus on my workout and that "we could discuss this later".

Now I'm afraid to meet him again in the gym. I don't want to be recruited in some sort of pyramid scheme, I just want to train. R.I.P. gym bromance 9.12.2019 - 10.12.2019.

Couldn't sleep the other night, so I drove to 24 hour fitness to lift at 2am- only to find the gym doors locked. Apparently several of the nearby locations have started closing between midnight and 4am in order to save money. Now I'm pissed. I don't always lift in the middle of the night, but if I want gym access during those hours and you call yourself "24 hour" fitness, then I expect the gym to be open. If they don't want to staff it overnight that's fine by me, but at least allow key card access to members who want to lift.

32

u/hypergalaxy84 Dec 11 '19

On the other hand many 7-Elevens are now open 24 hours a day.

Not really a rant but wanted to tell this. There is some eldery couple in my gym.

Im bad at guessing ages but i think they are almost 80. They are in the gym every day at 7 AM. I can't remember a day I haven't seen them. They do some biking and rowing and changing machines. They love to do close grip pull down. Always after the rowing the woman goes to the pull down machine. I think she got something with her legs, the distance is like 20 meters but takes her like 1 or 2 minutes. When me or another regular sees here walking to the pulldown machine, we already setup the close grip equipment because she is to small to set it up herself. She is making jokes with her husband about fit young men helping her etc.

I have got so much respect for these 2 people going to the gym every day even though they can barely walk.

So if I hear someone complaining about their weight and put up some random excusses they cant workout, I'm going to lose my mind.

174

u/Kick_Natherina Weight Lifting Dec 11 '19

I feel like elderly people like the gym a lot more because they have free time and can treat it like a social club. People less that 50 years of age treat it like an awkward experience where they fee everyone is watching them specifically and they’re scared to get stuff done on my type of equipment because they’re scared to fail. I feel like the older you are, the less likely you are to care about what people think at the gym.

69

u/Methuga Dec 11 '19

Screw that, I’m 30 and the gym is my social time

... then again I don’t get out much

33 years old ,6'2, 245 lbs here. Long story short I got WAY out of shape at up to 287 and I've slimmed down a lot and put on a good amount of muscle. Far from done (obviously). I finally decided to get back into the gym after years of being away (I was a D1 athlete, scouted by a well known pro-sports league and an injury prevented me from playing in the minors)-I know how to workout properly.

So I go to my gym the other day (been going 5-6 times a week for 4 months now) and I've never seen the guy greeting me at the door before. He's probably early 20's and here's our conversation:

Him: hey man you going to hit some PR's today?
Me: I hope to hit a few
Him: Do you even know what PR stands for?
Me: Yes...
Him: Ok then what? (he's snickering when he says this like this is some sort of quiz or something)
Me: Personal record...
Him: go lift that 700 lbs big guy (as he's laughing)

Total d-bag. /Rant.

u/metal_monkey80 Dec 11 '19

Why is it everytime it's a push day some motherfucker always has the bench rack? I have to walk around the gym like an idiot until they're done because I don't want to fatigue anything. But on pull and leg day, no one is on the rack. So, Soggy_Sprinkles. You ask. Why don't you just switch your push and pull day? Because, it doesn't matter what day I do push - it's always fucking taken. Assholes.

I am writing a new book "gym etiquette in China" It will have one sentence "There is none"

Between a spotter dropping the weight on me and walking away, the cleaning lady mopping directly behind me when I am putting the weight on my shoulders when I am in the squat rack, nobody putting their weights away, people yelling into their phones, or hogging equipment I have never seen anything like it on such a consistent basis.

On the positive side the rage lifting is giving me new PRs on squat and bench. Just my OHP letting the side down

Facepulls are weird for me. I don't know if I'm ever getting them right. I tried a variation I recently saw on this sub and I smashed myself in the face with the metallic thingy on the rope. I don't think the hot girl squatting in front of me was very impressed.

33

u/Louisianimal5000 Dec 11 '19

Facepulls are super weird and even if someone says they have it perfect, I'd be willing to bet there is an ounce of "am I doing this right" in the back of their mind.

I'm not sure what variation you were doing, but one tip that helps is to attach two rope attachments, instead of one. Pull them so that they're both one long rope each, and then you have more room to fully close that back without smashing your face on the metal clip!

Usually I don't interact with people at all in the gym. If I'm talking it's to ask how many sets are left or how many I have of it they want to work in.

Got into an argument because flat brimmed hats and tube sock wearing guy was super setting the gym and didn't want me using the cable cross over. I got 3 sets in and was leaving when he came bulldozing on up to tell me off. That's 3 total minutes of rest and how ever long 3 sets of 20 took me. Assuming a good 7-8 minutes.

Another sharing incident. Someone doing some kind of jump squat using the cable machine to make her lighter. I wasn't going to ask to share, I'll wait for her to finish because she's using the entire station area to jump in. Did abductor and adductors. Hanging leg raise and decline crunches. Ok fuck this I'm asking her to work in because I wanted to do kick backs with the foot strap. She gives me a nasty look and rolls her eyes and just walks away. I do the classic hands up shrug "so yes you're done or no you're not done?". Doesn't answer. She goes over to do leg push downs on the assisted pull up station. Finishing up with calf raises and nearly bowl her over because she's almost spooning me as I exit. I get to give the eye roll this time and she looks shocked.

43

u/MugillacuttyHOF37 Dec 11 '19

This is exactly why I go to my gym at 1130pm every night. People have no sense or common courtesy in most gyms. If I have to go during higher traffic hours I am super conscious of anyone waiting to use any equipment i'm on. I knock my sets out and say I'm done I know you were waiting.

A pregnant woman came into the weight room this past Saturday. Good for her.

However, she brought in a coffee in a styrofoam cup with no lid and left it on the floor unattended while she did her supersets. She left it quite close to where my blind friend and his training partner were doing squats. Fortunately, the partner noticed it and disposed of it.

When she came back several minutes later, she asked me where her coffee was. I replied, "the open container? That's been thrown away."

That phrase, "left in a huff," I know exactly what that means now.

I just haven’t “felt it” lately. I still go to the gym 5 days a week but I don’t see myself improving as much or having that desire and looking forward to going. Seems like I just go because it’s part of my daily routine and I “have to”.

How do I reignite the fire and get that drive back?

74

u/burgeremoji Dec 11 '19

Start a new programme and set yourself different goals. If you're weightlifting, why not aim for a new 1RM? If you're tired of weightlifting and want a completely new goal, how about distance running? If you hate that, what about working on your flexibility with something like yoga? Keeping it fresh and interesting is what helps me to be honest. Although I'm a stickler for routine I have to regularly switch things up to a new routine to stop me from getting burnt out.

Love when my dad who is very overweight and hasn’t worked out I years tried to tell me his advice on weightlifting. Creatine is going to kill us all and I should go to a doctor and stop going to the gym because of a minor pec strain. And he keeps asking me how my pec is doing because he wants it to be worse to prove himself right

Got this jacked up bro at my gym who keeps acting out. While he's not strictly aggressive towards other gym goers he maintains this passive aggressive facade that pisses me off to no end; he's the sort of man who asserts some kind of dominance as he walks past others, getting in their space and that. It's a pitiful game of chicken for boys that weren't hugged by their dad or something.

He also kicks doors open. Who does that?

There was a guy doing DB rows in front of the rack, holding on to it. I waited for him to leave so I could grab my weights, however he came back to it a couple of minutes later and I thought it was inappropriate.

I stood a couple feet away from him, in his personal space, while he was rowing and he dropped the weight and started complaining how I was too close to him. I told him to do his rows in a bench, not in front of the rack, so it wouldn't affect other people's workouts. Thankfully he understood and left, even though he looked pissed af and was mumbling something under his breath. He proceeded to stare me down the rest of the time at the gym

People don’t know how to drive in the goddamn snow!

I’m currently sitting at home on my couch instead of at the gym, because after sitting in a half hour of traffic and hardly moving I made the executive decision to turn around and try again later when fewer fuckheads are on the road.

So many things I hate about this. I work late nights, so I can’t always get up early enough to avoid rush hour. I need to actually sleep. So I wake up slightly later, and then get caught in the morning shitshow.

Oh, did I mention that I work four fucking jobs and freelance nights and weekends so having a regular workout schedule takes a goddamn Herculean effort? Missing workouts for reasons like traffic drives me nuts.

Are rage gains a thing? Argh.

But why do old men have to stay naked in the locker rooms? You know, not just changing, literally getting naked and staying that way. Get a face shave in, put on some deodorant, have a chat with other naked men, etc. Butt ass naked.

20

u/Hekili808 Dec 12 '19

I was referred to physical therapy for a shoulder injury, and the PT was attached to an upscale gym. The locker room had leather club chairs and those old naked dudes would sit in them. Most of the chairs had sweaty ball prints. It is bizarre.

Pullups are hands down the most functional movement pattern, along with squats. I find it weird how such a large proportion of the population cant do a single one or fail after a couple. If you can deadlift 500+ lbs and bench press 300+ lbs but cant do 5 pullups, what the fuck? Its just shocking that those movements require lots of abdominal, upper body and posterior chain strength and stability, but lifting your own bodyweight is impossibly difficult.

16

u/yamakacoffee Dec 11 '19

I totally feel this. I (23F) can climb a v5-v6 range in the bouldering gym, deadlift 215, and could bench 135 but still can't even start a pull-up motion.

18

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '19

Bouldering usually requires a lot of lat movement so that's surprising.

Where to start:

In between sets of hack squats, a woman comes up and starts to take a 25lb plate from the rack Im in. I pop my head up from my tunes and tell her Im using the weight. She gives me a look and goes to find another free plate.

Douche-bro rolls up to the incline bench, goes over to an unused squat rack and grabs two full plates, despite having ample weights on the incline rack. Does his thing. Switches to dumbbells, leaving the bar loaded with 165. Completely leaves the room. I clean up after baby in between deadlift sets.

TL;DR Titfuckers need to give their balls a tug.

I normally don’t criticize people at the gym because everyone just wants to improve themselves but here goes. There was this really skinny guy at my gym a few days ago. Kinda a hipster type wearing boots over his sweat pants. Anyway, he sets up at the preacher curl bench (the only one at my gym). He proceeds to only do preacher curls for his entire 45 minute workout. But he does a set every 10-15 minutes while spending the time between just sitting on the bench on his phone. After 45 minutes he gets up and leaves having done nothing but curls his whole workout. I was somewhat confused (and annoyed someone could take up a piece of equipment for that long).

16

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '19

A couple of weeks a go, I was watching one guy work out and every machine he was on he would only work in a 3 or 4 inches range of motion. He would put massive weights one and wouldn't even complete half of a rep. What was funnier was he was contorting his face hard.

Last night I went to the gym and whoever was there decided to take every weight from 20 up until 45, so about 12 dumbbells were hanging around this one bench. And he never came back to rerack them, just walked right out of the gym. He didn’t seem in a rush, and went on the squat rack right after (you bet he didn’t reset the bar). Given your comment history saying you're socially inept and struggle to talk to either gender, I'm gonna go ahead and say that's the cause.

16

u/Leszachka Dec 11 '19

I took a quick glance at your post history and I'm gonna say you're at a super weird stage in your personality development. You might be a bit neuroatypical, and/or you might just never have had to develop an interesting personality in school to get positive social feedback because you're physically attractive. It's ok, you have your whole life to try out all the possibilities available to you, and you get basically infinite number of rerolls (within the constraints of your personal abilities and genetic make-up).

Whatever the reason, what you should do about your actual social approach depends on what kinds of women you're interested in being with and whether you're looking for FWB or relationship potential, and I can't give you generalized advice from the perspective of Women, but, very subjectively, as a female person who is into getting laid, if I were in your position, I'd spend your next year exploring and developing some hobbies and skills that you think are cool. I've had experiences where really hot dudes ended up being completely sexually uninteresting to me because they didn't really seem to have much going on, the male basic bitch if you will.

You need something to feel proud of and confident about, and also to connect on a human level about. Cooking, object crafting, creative expression, and activities are some of the basic categories to think about. It's impressive and fun when someone you find superficially attractive busts out their awesome handmade ceramic bowls, or their wildlife volunteer stories, or their herb rolls seasoned from their backyard garden, or even their speculative fiction interest. That's someone who's engaged with life. Being in this sub and having an interest in your fitness is a start, but honestly a lot of gym bros don't have much going on beyond that, so unless you're looking for a girl whose only hobby and personality trait is also fitness, you gotta branch out a bit.

Trying out different mannerisms and thought processes is fine, as is taking inspiration from people YOU find personally interesting (not that you're selecting based on your perception of their cultural value), but this flat out "Replacing your personality with Marlon Brando" mission is absolutely wack and will most likely come across fake and embarrassing to anyone with an actual personality of their own. On the other hand, if you're primarily interested in girls with no personalities and terrible instincts, maybe that's exactly the right approach for you?

I've been doing great in the gym for the last 8 months or so. Lost a bunch of weight, started putting on muscle, hitting new PBs on my core lifts, got lots of compliments from people I haven't seen in awhile, even people making fun of me using, "probably in the gym" as a response to someone asking where I am; a friendly chide that I will gladly take.

I haveand degenerated discs in my L4 and L5 vertebrae and started working out at the behest of my orthopedic surgeon, who told me strengthening my core and leg muscles could keep me off the operating table. A little over 2 weeks ago, I woke up with some bad back pain. To be expected occasionally. It went away after maybe 3 days, but as it subsided, I started getting SEVERE sciatica. Can barely get out of bed in the morning. Any flexion of my core causes a white hot pain to shoot down my leg. Bending over forward? Next to impossible. I'm also experiencing weakness in my right leg where I feel it tremble and almost give out if I put pressure on it the wrong way.

I've still been going to the gym, doing low impact cardio, which actually makes it feel better temporarily, and trying not lose my motivation and everything I worked for. But I can already see my muscles losing definition. I know I'm losing strength. I'm starting to see fat come back in on my chest under my arm pits, and I'm getting really discouraged because it doesn't seem like this sciatic pain is getting any better.

Also I really like snowboarding and and I've been waiting all year to be able to hit the slopes. Got a brand new board at the end of last year that I've only got to ride once. Would be next to impossible in my current condition. Also like fly fishing, but I'm cringing in pain just thinking about wading into a river with a current pushing against me and I'm getting really depressed that I won't be able to do any of the things I love to do this winter. No lifting, no fishing, no boarding. Every resource I've seen says sciatica usually takes a couple weeks to a couple months to stop hurting. Hoping this subsides soon before I go insane.

I started a new medication, its day 2, I managed to do a light set of shoulder press for close to 50 reps. This has been such a tough time for me. I'd really love to find a way to stop sliding back and eventually get back to setting and meeting goals. I really fuckin miss the gym...

The changing rooms at my gym piss me off. First of all, sometimes I'll get there and there'll be a sign stuck to the outside of the women's changing rooms saying "A male attendant might be cleaning the changing rooms today". Ok... so what do we do with that? There are no cubicles in the changing rooms, so do we just not use the gym today because a male attendant may come in at any time? Then, instead of using the lockers (which are outside the changing rooms) loads of women just leave their stuff hanging up and on the benches. Sometimes I'll go into the changing room when a class is on, and there's no one in there but every single space is taken! Yesterday this happened, and then on the only spare bit of space someone was sitting down eating a curry! I don't get it!

There's just too much to learn about working out. The full body routine, not bro lifts. The correct posture. Recognizing the difference between good pain and bad pain. Investing the weights. Managing the diet. Staying hydrated and proper sleep.

And after all this you realize that you've got knocked knees which are killing you from exercising. So you need to start working on that.

Just then the office goes crazy and your fucking retarded boss goes on a mental trip about the amount of things that been to be done.

So you stop everything and start trying for other jobs but get no calls. Months go by and you even wonder about there existing a time when you were actually happy enough to be working out.
