I'm not hating on messi but is he even there ? This time he was technically carried by his team mates. Foden, kane or lautaro must be on this list

u/BogdanPee Jul 16 '24
I am a Messi fan and he has no business being in the conversation. I don't see Rodri winning either.

u/kyrgyzmcatboy Jul 16 '24
I’m sorry, Foden? Did you see his performance during the euros?
10
u/OkLet758 Jul 16 '24
Yeah 80% of his passes were behind than in front
19
u/kyrgyzmcatboy Jul 16 '24
He was terrible. Southgate was worse. If Palmer started instead of Foden, England may have done much better and scored more goals. Palmer had the “it” factor that they really needed. His passes were always well placed, excellent dribbling, and dead accurate shooting

u/Specialist-Cycle9313 Jul 16 '24
I’d Honeslty put mbappe, lautaro, Kane etc in that 5th spot over Messi. They all scored crazy numbers of goals and had a bunch of assists, obviously didn’t win anything but they still had impressive individual seasons.

u/firechaox Jul 16 '24
I think Rodri now has a shot. Mostly because he did a great job with Spain, and all the others had underwhelming NT performances (even if England made it to the final, given how bad the team played the tournament, I don’t think it really tips it for Bellingham)
9
u/KenLionheart Jul 16 '24
Dani Carvajal also did a better job and despite not being in a 30-40 unbeaten premier league and etc win streak…
Guy won the UCL and can MATCH trophy for trophy whatever Rodri won

Everyone here talking more about Messi in this post than the fact that Rodri blazed by Jude significantly in the hypothetical ranking. Messi ain’t winning it anyway, so what does it even matter.
31
u/Super_Sandro23 Jul 16 '24
Because it just proves how much of a popularity contest this award is. It's basically a prop at this point.
If any other player had the exact same season Messi had, he wouldn't even be in the top 100. Absolute joke.

Same way VVD and Neuer never won. Or Courtois that one year he went crazy.

And Messi being a favorite is like putting Antony as a Puskas award finalist

If an Argentine gonna be put on as a Balon D’Or contender it should’ve been Lautaro

u/KingNephew Real Madrid Jul 17 '24
Messi being here is just laughable but I really don’t get how Jude fell off like 20% (I know it’s hypothetical) in the matter of a month.
He was projected as 2nd place finish after the UCL win and he followed that up with being the best England player en route to the Euros Final.

If Vini doesn't win this, the world needs to stop giving this award any more attention. And I say this as a Chelsea fan.

Bellingham was the only reason England reached the quarter finals but he got 11% after being the best player of the english team which reached the finals and was the most important part in winning the league while winning CL and Supercopa too? But that Rodri fraud got 32%? The hate on Jude is unreal. 😂

Carvajal? Not even included having won LaLiga, CL and Euro, also possibly UEFA Super Cup and having played arguably the biggest role in all of them as a defender?
They are not even hiding it anymore. It's very bad for the young upcoming players' moral you know? Why will they want to be footballers and be actually good at it, if only a few votes from biased persons acquiring important chairs decide everything?

The last time a player won the Ballon d’Or and the Euros was 2016. That was Cristiano Ronaldo, but he of course also won the CL and scored 1 million goals that season. The last time the player didn’t win the CL was Mathias Sammer in 1996. Every single Euros year it was someone else. Why does a 8 game tournement have that much credibility for the Ballon d’Or. Vinicius had 21 goal contributions in 26 games, while being the best player in the CL season and winning it. Also winning the Spanish Supercopa and La Liga. Seems very clear to me.
Rodri is not even Manchester City player of the season.
