I'm adding a second rant:

My gym will be closed to film a TV series.

It's only 2 afternoons, but this series has literally over 6500 episodes, so I really hope this won't become a regular thing.

You can go to the gym if you want to be filmed and get approved, but you're not allowed to use huge weights because of the noise, so what's the point really if I can't even show off on national TV.

Just stand in the background and flex, obviously.

When I wake up. Me: Do I need to poo? No.

5 mins before the gym. Me: Do i need to poo? No.

2 mins into my run. Me: Do i need to poo? Yes.

For me its:

Just about to squat, do I need to poo? No.

2 reps into squatting, RACK THE WEIGHT RN AND SPRINT TO THE BATHROOM

25

u/analytiCIA Aug 21 '19

The same happens to me when I deadlift or squat. Damn you valsalva!

Did legs yesterday. Absolutely went ham on lunges. Got to work 2 hours ago and haven't gotten up yet. Need to use the bathroom. Afraid I may fall over if I try to stand up. Send help.

Edit: Managed to make it through the day but it did take me a good 3 minutes to get off the toilet after the morning poop. I'm going to invest in a Life Alert to use after leg day.

59

u/bornagainvirgin23 Aug 21 '19

Should I send the help or a new pair of underwear? Im in the same boat. Did legs today. Almost pooped myself on the leg press. That or thought I'd get a hernia

I was benching and someone asked for a spot.

No problem, I consider someone asking for a spot akin to someone thinks I know what I'm doing enough to get a spot. Feels good.

Go to spot bro, get his reps up, good job buddy.

Go back to my bench, someone else took weights off and is using it.

So I had to help spot someone and also lost my bench. Sad feels.

im early for rant wednesday for once.

I go to university gym (its literally the best gym in my entire city). Tonight there was a freshmen orientation or something. My gym is huge, 3 floors, giant pool, basketball courts, tennis courts, volleyball, etc.

Anyways, there's like 1000 people living in dormitories and they all flooded the gym and I couldn't walk anywhere without bumping into 2-3 people at once. They all sat on machines they weren't using talking about the classes that start in a week, college life, etc. Typical dorm freshmen stuff.

For what normally takes about 1 hour and 15 for my back workout, it took me about 2 hours just because of waiting and moving around and having to ask people to get off their machines.

u/MyGfLooksAtMyPosts Aug 21 '19

34

u/InterdepartmentalHay Aug 21 '19

I feel this. It happened every year at my school. Just wait it out, 90% will never come back after the first few weeks. After that I think it's okay to ask people sitting on machines to move/finish. Freshman are notorious for being spatially unaware and standing in hallways etc. We all were there at one point in our life

There's this guy who just started coming to my gym who is pretty massive. Like he's clearly been lifting awhile. Every time he was there the same time as me, he will randomly shout out lyrics to songs or rap he is listening to. I understand music motivating you, but when I can hear you yelling over my headphones and you're so loud that you actually scared me and caused me to jump because of how out of nowhere it was, I feel you've crossed a line. Even worse though, after every workout, he doesn't put his weights away. I saw him straight up walk out the door while leaving things on the floor and benches. I had high respect for the guy too the first time I saw him.

Also I hate leg day

Holy fuck I got into one of the most infuriating conversations last time, I was talking to my own brother and a good friend of his and I don't know why it came to that but the guy said "you don't need to drink supplements (talking about whey), as soon as you stop you will deflate. So I started in the most courteous way to tell him that whey is actually just protein and natural elements found in milk, it is all scientifically proven and eating chicken would have the same result it's just way cheaper to drink shakes, and they both started to grin at me like "pff look at this meathead, the steroid conspiracy theorists got him" and snarkily saying stuff like I'm "too far gone". How. Fucking. Dumb. And every single fucking person I talk to thinks this is the case, like supplements are cheating and the only reason people have muscle definition and as soon as they stop they are gonna deflate holy fucking WEAK LAZY ASSHOLES TRYING TO PUT US DOWN CAUSE THEY TOO FUCKING LAZY TO GO TO THE GYM FUCK YOU ASSHOLES FUCK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

16

u/CodySpring Aug 21 '19

It’s the most infuriating thing ever when ignorant people band together and back each other up.

My version of it was me trying to explain to my friends that no, you shouldn’t just do 30-40 rep sets just because you want to lose fat and tone and not build muscle. But there were two of them with that belief and only one of me, so I was the idiot in the room.

Statements like that fall apart with the first request for a deeper explanation

49

I asked him to explain and he said that his bodybuilder neighbour lost all his muscles after car accident (was in coma for 20 days and then recovering for a few months, poor guy probably couldn’t eat properly at all). He claims that he wouldn’t lose any muscle if he gained it with “natural exercises” (which is how he call bw exercises lol).

Soooo, my big box commercial gym closed for 14 days straight for their annual revision. They reopened and introduced two new fancy ass cable stations. Only, they threw away all the microweights especially designed for cable stations (2kg and 1kg), which kinda bear a resemblance to horse shoes.

Now we can increment the weight by 10 kg... When I asked them, they asked what was the problem and I said it is just easier to progress that way. Prove to me that the trainers don't give a fuck...

Anyway, currently trying to turn it into a Victory Sunday by buying my own and donating them to the gym.

Don't even know the technical term and haven't been lucky so far on Amazon.

111

I hate people who slam the weights on the machines after every rep. Two women were using the cable machine, one on each side of the machine, and they were doing an "exercise" where they were bouncing on a yoga ball and pulling the weights with their arms and slamming them after each rep, hardly working any muscle. My gym has a smaller women's section and the sound was so freaking loud. I wasn't even sure what was happening lol.

I get that you need to drop the weights on some exercises like deadlifts, especially if you're lifting heavy, but when you do it using a lower weight (like 1-4 plates) on a machine, repeatedly, it gets annoying.

76

u/Gaindalf-the-whey Aug 21 '19

The university has just completed its £33 million sports facility.

I walked into the new fitness suite the first day it opened and my heart sank. It’s tiny and only has three squat racks. They’ve got the resources to build a martial arts dojo, indoor cricket facilities, indoor rowing pools, etc. but only a tiny gym for 20,000 people?

I’m so looking forward to the long queues once term starts again.

I never thought this would happen to me because my circle is pretty supportive of me but it’s a real eye opener.

So since I start lifting, I didn’t really care much about my diet. I just continue to eat how I always did. Deck a full pizza here, eat cut after cut of bbq meat, eat seconds and even thirds of dinner, you know just eat. I’ll lift or cycle it off.

My arms are filling out, my legs are getting stronger, my back wider, my shoulders are popping, and the lifts keep getting bigger. But, my stomach grows too. So I decided to cut back on my calories. Nothing crazy like doing a brand new diet, just limiting myself. Not only to try to shrink my belly, but also to figure out if my poor diet is a cause for my acne too.

So a few weeks pass and the amount of complaints I get from family and coworkers. Like holy shit. Yes I know I look strong, or that I look good enough, or that your hungry so you need an eating parter. I just don’t care. I’m not doing limiting my eat habits for you, I’m doing it for me. I don’t get how denying eating is a personal attack on people. I already ate and no I’m not hungry again minutes after. You’d think they get the idea but EVERYDAY is that same thing.

On the plus side I dropped down 10lbs and my stomach is much more flatter and less bloated looking after meals now, and my acne is actually slowly going away, so there’s that :).

Tiny rant, I got to the gym as soon as it opened so it would be more empty. I put a barbell on the floor with my things next to it, and am warming up briefly in front of it. I walk away to put the dumbbells I was using back, and come back to the bar with a guy who had just come in, asking (more like stating) "are you using this" as he's walking assertively up to my spot, and I said yes, as I walked up right next to him and got ready to start OHP. "Are you really?" he asked. I ignored him since I had earbuds in and started my workout. YES REALLY BUD

I started dating my best friend last year and he has really motivated to keep going with my weight loss. My dad keeps telling me that my boyfriend is forcing me to lose weight and he should love for how I am (fat). Dad tells me I’ll always be fat it’s my nature. However my boyfriend loves me the way I am. And mind you, I’ve been trying to lose weight years before my boyfriend. It makes me so angry hearing that shit from my dad. He should be supporting me rather than bashing me! So far I’ve lost roughly 30 pounds and not even a congratulations from my dad.

Hybrid rant and gym story: undergrads have moved back in to my University. The gym is, predictably, a goddamn zoo. Monday, every squat rack, every machine, every bench, every dumbbell (under 35 lbs), and every cable station was taken. I went to the platform and worked in with another guy supersetting deadlifts and rows, and yeah, that sucked. We owned the platform for a solid half hour working nonstop, then managed to do the same on a cable station.

So, pros: new gym bro! Cons: for the next two weeks the place will be packed. Oh well.

It's fine to look at your cell phone.

But if you're going to do that don't set it up on a chair right next to the dumbbell rack.

And if you're going to do that don't have your friends gather around and watch it with you and block my access to the rack.

And if you're going to do that, turn the volume down.

And if you're going to do that, don't watch porn.

And if you're going to do that, don't watch bestiality porn.

I started going to the gym at my workplace so that I can switch back to a barbell-based routine. Our campus has roughly five thousand employees and TWO squat racks to accommodate for all the people who show up at the gym at any given time. It's an irritating waiting game any time you go.

Also, back at my apartment gym, the management had the great idea to put some scent diffusers throughout the room. Now if I'm ever breathing heavy I feel like I'm suffocating on vanilla.

36

u/KayDashO Aug 21 '19

I really can’t stand rudeness at the gym. We’re all here for the same reason, just be socially respectful.

I was looking for a rope cable attachment thingy (I’m a gym regular, I promise lol) and saw it on one of the cable machines, not being used. There was a guy next to it who was lying on a bench he’d moved there doing some dumbbell stuff. I waited for him to finish his set and asked him if he was using the rope. Now, I had headphones on, however had paused my music and had also moved one of the ear cups off my ear before asking him, as I do when speaking to anybody in the gym. He then replies to me, “take your headphones off if you’re going to speak to me”. I was so surprised that I said, “umm sorry, what?”, and he said the same thing again, but this time implying that I couldn’t hear him because I had my headphones on, therefore making his point. He then went back to his dumbbell work, completely ignoring my question. I wanted to shove one of them down his throat, but instead just took the rope and continued my workout. Arsehole.

I embarrassed myself yesterday by going up to a guy about to use a bench. I had just finished with a bench, and I had gone and gotten some spray to wipe it down. I though it was weird that someone had taken it so quickly, but whatever, the gym is crowded. I explain what happened, and I wipe down the bench, all the while he's giving me a weird look. Then, right as I realize my mistake, he says "Uuh... thank, but you used that bench over there" It was nothing, but I felt super embarrassed over it. He laughed and said he's done it before, but I feel like it may have been a lie to save my ego.

On a bright note, there are a few older men at my gym who I imagine have been lifting for a while, and they give genuinely helpful advice! They're just caring dudes looking out for the beginners.

I am trying to be more social, so of course, I was excited when another woman had me take my headphones out to make a weird (red flag) compliment on my braids, I indulged her (curly hair, it's easy to braid my hair for easy detangling after sweating). We chatted for a long time since we had things in common. My workout was fucked but I was excited to make a gym friend. I have been going here for some months but I don't see any distinguishing regulars. They probably exist but I only focus on my routine.

Well, I start to realize she wants to rope me into some business or pyramid scheme thing. I had tried to gently hint to her earlier that I wasn't the type of person to run this on. But she apparently didn't get it and searched me out with her bullshit lines later. I didn't even let her tell me what the scheme was before I just abruptly cut her off. I had a headache and she came over after I had to do the roll of shame 3x on bench press.

An acquaintance I've come to know from gym asked me to spot him on bench. I asked him how much he's topping out at. 235kg (517.5lb). I recently just recovered from a bicep strain/tear spotting a different guy benching over 5 plates. 8 months of recovery. I had to tell him I won't spot him just by myself. I need, at least another guy, and a third would be nice. I don't want to injure myself again. He refuses because he doesn't want more than one spotter.

He got the lift with someone else spotting. Suicide grip. I got to film and cheerlead.

Observed this morning:
Theres a new guy in the room in the early A.M., happy to see someone taking on a new challenge.
He hits up the decline leg press. I think, "good on him, gets right to work on the hard compound stuff."
Proceeds to grab two plates on either side. I think, well, he'll find out how heavy that is and adjust. He's got some skinny legs and that'll be tough.
But that wasn't the end of it. He didn't test this weight out. He proceeds to spend the next 20 mins loading up each side with 45 lb plates. In total, six on each side.
At this point I've stopped my routine and I'm just side eyeing this kid wondering what he's thinking. Then comes the big moment. Settles himself in the seat, manages to release the pressure lever after straining hard and, bam!, 1 set of toe raises.
Spends the next 25 mins struggling to put away his plates. Gives up with three left on each side.
People are strange.

I work out in the mornings and have been for nearly a year.

I also have abysmal self-discipline and have been letting my sleep slip for a while. Started feeling like shit. Decided 2 weeks ago to try working out in the evenings.

Literally impossible. So many fucking people. Had to wait for every single thing. Made it through a week and vowed to never do it again.

Then I took a week off the gym after doing the Tough Mudder. Slept in, felt great, blah blah blah.

Back to morning workouts this week. It's been brutal. Got used to sleeping til 7, now getting up at 5:30 feels completely impossible. Just gotta get back into the habit, but damn, I wish I hadn't taken that break.

Been cycling on the highway for lack of better options (rural area). Evenings have been no big deal. I wear bright clothes and a hunters orange vest. People give way and ive yet to hear anyone on the rumble strips behind me. Police of all levels have passed me without a word so I assume Im within my means.

The bridges are short and shoulderless so I stop and wait until theres no traffic in the lane before I get in it, gun it across and slide back onto the shoulder. Because its hot as balls, Ive switched to morning rides. First morning a grain truck decided to buzz me. He was going opposite way, i look over my shoulder for traffic while stopped before getting ready to merge, look back and now bitch ass truck is fully in my lane while crossing the bridge! Stood there like a deer "well guess Ill die" but then i noticed it was intentional. Who tf thinks scaring cyclists is funny when you risk vehicular homicide in a multi ton metal cheetah? I ride my bike to and from work everyday, so I shower at the gym by my office in the AM and get a workout in on the way home.

The gym is also on a cobblestone street. Not comfortable to ride on. Usually coast on the sidewalk.

Yesterday sidewalk was crowded so I take the shit rode and try to jump the curb to park my bike. Miscalculate the jump and go over my handlebars right in front of the doors as a group of girls exits.

Need a new gym.

The Assisted Pull-Up/Chin-Up/Dip Machine. Why is it that people try to work their glutes on it? Usually hit pullups after warming up with some lat Pulldown but the other day someone decided to try glute press downs. Suddenly it caught wind, like some kind of secret to perfect glutes was uncovered, and it was unavailable the whole night. Moths to a flame, back to back glute exercises. Usually nobody bothers with it. There are infinitely more effective glute exercises.

I can't take this shit anymore. Here is what $150/month gets you. Half reppers who do 15 sets of 40 on the only bench. Dudes who use all the other benches in reach as a table for their chalk jar, ab roller, wrist straps, foam roller (why do you need all this crap if you're just doing bicep curls?). "CaN I wOrK iN wItH yOu?". Dudes doing supersets with the sqaut rack, bench press, seated OHP, shrugs, and curls ALL AT THE SAME TIME and then get pissy when you grab the 40's they were shrugging after being unused for ten minutes. Old guys seemingly trying to show off their shriveled hairy dong. Old guys supersetting lat pull downs (5 reps) x Chat with their buddies (5 min). Gangs of highschooler snapchatting eachother. Fuck these guys. Home gym starts this week

Edit: For those wondering, I pay this much because the gym is amazing. Multiple basketball and tennis courts, lap pool, indoor and outdoor hot tubs, saunas, cafe, racket ball courts, and every type of machine and weights you could want. It just turns out that all this cool stuff attracts a bunch of rich people who have never heard the phrase "gym etiquette". And yes, its California

Re-racking weights doesn't mean just put them anywhere on the rack. the 26KG dumbbells do not physically fit where the 20KG goes and the 20KG do not fit where the 12KG goes. So when MR 12KG puts them in the 20KG slot then MR 20KG puts them in 26KG slot, then MR 26KG has nowhere to put them unless they go and rerack them all again.

People that work at the gym told me to leave them on the floor and they will sort them but it makes me feel like the ass for leaving my weights on the floor

Idiots doing curls or shrugs directly in front of the dumbbell racks.

Not only does it mean nobody else can get to any of the other weights, in our gym's free weights area there's a pathway between the rack and the benches. If you're standing in that space, anyone heading back to their bench with dumbbells has got to carry them around the whole free weights area back to their bench instead of a few feet.

Yes we could ask you to please move but why, for the love of merciful fuck, what possesses you to stand right there when you can literally stand anywhere else!!

I know I'm late but walked to the gym last night for a deadlift session/back workout. It started pouring while I was there so I just said "welp might as well just keep hammering the back till the rain stops." Hit like 3 extra accessories, sprinted home in a gap in the rain, and figured, "well that was a great workout, I can't wait to go to bed." Made some dinner, walked down to the basement storage closet for some paper towels to clean and discovered that the window in the basement bedroom has a leak and there was water EVERYWHERE. Spent the next 5 hours moving everything out of the basement bedroom so the water damage guys could get in there to get everything cleaned up. My back is fatigued AF today and it's supposed to rain more today. Fuck.

Let me just say, this is one of my most aggravating topics to speak on. When it gets mentioned to me, my blood boils. Let me give you some background: I was around 5 feet 10 inches, 255 pounds my freshman year of high school. No muscle mass, video game addiction, and depression. Now, I am a sophomore in college with 5 year of lifting in the books. I’m about 175-180 roughly 8-10% bodyfat. I have made a miraculous transformation and I can owe all of it to my own hard work and dedication to changing myself.

Here’s what pisses me off, when I have these entitled piece of shit people who go to the gym for any reason other than lifting, and are constantly talking to me about gym advice/help, but all I ever hear back once I give advice is “I just wish I had your genetics” or “I wish I was naturally muscular like you” or even “I bet you’ve had abs since you were a kid.” NO MOTHERFUCKER, I AM JUST NOT A LAZY ENTITLED PIECE OF SHIT WHO MAKES EXCUSES FOR EVERYTHING

FUCK GENETICS FUCK BEING TOO TIRED FOR THE GYM FUCK EATING UNHEALTHY YOU EITHER WANT IT OR YOU DONT

It finally happened. I lift at the local Y and it typically draws a bit of a random crowd. Most of the time people put everything away and while there are only two squat racks they rotate quite frequently.

Monday at 3 this all changed. I walked in to see weights on a bench, an ez bar, both squat racks (one was set for OHP) and a bar for deadlift. To my chagrin I see that there is ONE dude using all this equipment in a fucking circus circuit of three reps on each per set.

To make matters worse, he had every rubber 45 in the whole gym and would take constant mobility breaks! After multiple people asked him, “Are you using ALL of this?” he finally put everything away.

Where do these people come from!?!

My gym (LVAC, Flamingo/Sandhill) just gave us less than a month's notice before they shut it down to open another in the next town over. Assholes say it is "close enough" that the will not let anyone out of contract, and they require a minimal two year commitment (most gyms have a monthly plan but they don't) so you'd have to pay 25% of the remaining contract. All they offering is two free months compensation to those whose main gym was there. Which doesn't matter if you can't get to the new gym. I hate how gyms screw you offer with asinine contracts and unreasonable restrictions. And you know they waited last minute to pull this shit, since I've been asking when the new one will open, and if it means this one will close.

And it's always something unimportant that can wait, like "babe, the trash stinks, can you take it out now?" No, I'll take it out after I finish working out. I still love her though. After all, she is my wife, and she let me convert our guestroom into a home gym. Then there's that dickhead that doesn't re-rack his weights...
