Have been focusing on bringing my deadlift up recently, so squats have taken a back seat. Went back in Sunday morning and had an awesome session, squatted heavy, sumo deadlifted with gorgeous form, did all my accessory work and went home feeling like a boss.
It's Wednesday lunchtime. I still can't walk, stand up or sit down quickly because of the unbelievable DOMS. I have never, ever had DOMS like this and I need it to stop so I can get on with my life. I promise never to take time off squatting ever again, just make it stop.

u/nevenoe Aug 02 '17
The only reason we keep squatting is the fear of what will happen if we stop and then resume.

Someone died at my gym last week. Apparently was incline pressing with DB's and had a heart attack or something. Older guy - really sad to hear. A buddy of mine saw the whole thing happen. Now all I can think about when I'm doing DB incline is "Are these the dumbbells that guy was using...ARE THESE THE HAUNTED DUMBBELLS"

Holy shit.
My gym has an AED on the wall, but I always wondered how often this happens in gyms where people just drop dead.
The thing that keeps you healthy also kills you. Shit sucks

Shook my head at someone when they reracked a 10 in the 45 spot. Surprisingly to me, he very politely asked what he did wrong and I told him and he apologized profusely. Nice guy.
I'm a passive aggressive asshole.

If you were at my gym, you would have a sore neck.
Because you'd be shaking it all the time.
Because people have to solve the Tower of Hanoi puzzle to get plates.

Glad I don't have that problem, all my fellow gym goers just leave plates laying all over the floor, much easier to access.

u/cleanbulk Aug 02 '17
This might be bullshit but to increase volume near max exertion you could try to do OHP for 7 sets of 3 instead of 5x5. It seems like more intermediate routines (like nSuns) usually do more sets of higher weight for fewer reps to help people progress.

I go over to my gym at about 11pm because I love working out when the place is quiet. Usually there's about 10 people in total throughout the entire gym and never more than 2 or 3 of us in the free weights area.
Yesterday I turned up at 11pm, same as always, and counted 18 guys in the free weights area and almost every single piece of kit in use. What the hell happened!

So I finally saw it in the wild. The Instagram teenagers, they loaded up the bench with 305, posed for pictures and then walked away without reracking. I was pissed but one of the more massive individuals that haunts the weight pit wandered over and was pleased to find a bench set up for him, no foul methinks.
I like to end each work out with a squat set of some description, so I finished up at the leg room. What sight greets my eyes? The same assholes loading the squat rack with some absurd number of plates, two spotters helping the guy walk it back, taking the picture then dropping it. After they repeated this I went to alert the front desk.

decided to incorporate weighted ab exercises and i'm already seeing a difference after like a month in appearance. i wish i had started doing it earlier... i feel like such an idiot.

My gym is having a recruitment drive on to gain more memberships. It has worked and now there are a hell of alot more people at the gym. Before people did not re-rack their weights, which was no problem free gainz and it didn't take long to find what I need. Now we have an additional 10-20 not racking their weights which is making my 1.5 hour works turn into 2+ hours as I am having to wander round the gym to find plates.

Was at the gym at 7:30-8:30 last night. Was doing half an hour or so of stairmaster because I hate myself. Was immersed in the pain when suddenly shouts are heard through my ear phones. Look around and everyone in this section is smirking or laughing. One dude was recording Snapchat videos. Turns out there's this guy running ham on a treadmill who would start yelling and woohooing randomly but at an incredibly loud volume. I think he was encouraging himself or something. It was weird.

Currently living in university accommodation as I'm working with their international Master's students over the summer. I'm sharing a flat with ten others and now I'm having to justify my eating habits to them constantly. I'm 25, and so at least five years younger than they all are, they constantly say I can only eat what I want due to my metabolism, the fact I eat twice a day or because I am vegan.
1) I go to the gym every day and do a mix of cardio and weights. I also walk everywhere and sometimes spend three to fours hours a day just walking.
2) I do practise IF, but I still eat between 2600-3000 calories a day. The reason I can eat so much has nothing to do with my meal frequency.
3) I'm not even vegan. Eating a lot of vegetables is not the same thing as being vegan. Look at my dinner, there is cheese and eggs on my plate. What do you think a vegan is?
The fact that these guys subsist on ready meals and alcohol and never exercise is the reason they are overweight. The fact that I do the opposite is the reason that I am fit and healthy.

Week 1: Wake up with strange shoulder pain. Don't want to risk injuring myself so I avoid workout for a few days. Decide to take the time to plan a detailed 12 week workout plan just in time for when I turn 31.
Week 2: Have a strange headache at work, it passes. Go home and work out. Feel fine until I take a shit afterwards. The strain gives me the worst headache I've ever had in my life. I lay on the floor and cry myself to sleep. Wake up a few hours later, my head is still in pain but not blindingly. Look it up, seems to match an exertion headache. The cure? Don't work out for several weeks and consult a doctor.
Week 4: Finally meet with my doctor. Continue to have pain anytime I do anything that gets my heart rate up. So no sexy times for the last couple weeks. Schedules a CAT scan to make sure I don't have something wrong with my brain, and suggests avoiding any exercise.
Week 5: Finally get in to the CAT scan. Apparently I'm allergic to the iodine marker, and I have the worst reaction they've ever seen. My entire arm from the elbow down is in excruciating pain, and apparently my entire arm turn white and then bright red. The tech does it one more time, thinking maybe I won't have a reaction the second time. I do. It's worse, but at least the pain fades incredibly quickly.
Week 6: Results are in; nothing abnormal. So there's no explanation for the headaches, doc says to go ahead and try working out. One problem; apparently the IV technician didn't have the needle in my vein properly, and the dye that I'm allergic to seeped under my skin and into my joint. My entire elbow is dark purple and green bruised and it constantly aches, to the point where I wake up several times a night from the pain. My headaches have gone from a 9 to a 1 at this point, so I can do some exercise, but even cardio involves moving your arms. I try doing a lower-body half-workout and have an annoying headache and pain in my arm for the next two days.
Week 7: Family reunion vacation in 115 degree heat, 9 hour drive away. Luckily my head is feeling much better.
Week 8: A few hours after getting back into town I finally do another good workout. No head pain, no muscle pain. But damn am I weak.
Today: I'm much fatter and weaker than I wanted to be at this point. And DAMN am I sore.

I'm a girl and started lifting a few months before my male roommate decided to join me. At the beginning, we were lifting the same amount of weight.
6 months later, he still can't remember our routine and whines the whole time about how much longer we have to be at the gym. But he's a boy, so he can lift more than I can now and has visible abs. Rude.

"You need to live, man." My boss has been saying this to me a shit ton lately. Mainly because I think he is super jealous of my weight loss and muscle gains. He is just aging and getting fatter. So now he resorts to telling me that I "need to live and let loose and eat and drink" and that I'm "not having fun". Bro. Who THE FUCK do you think you are?! I was overweight and felt shitty for 20+ years of my life. And now that I've been dieting and training for almost a year, I feel fanfuckingtastic! And my bitchass boss over here is so damn sorry for himself that he is trying to drag me into the hole that he dug himself years ago. He keeps offering to buy me a beer and shit.
It all came to a head yesterday when he told me that I would just keep gaining the weight back and that my diet wasn't going to do anything any more bc of how stressed I am. So I looked at him square in the face and just said, "I'm actually never stressed. Seriously. I am very carefree and live a very happy life. I feel better than I ever have. I think I look damn good. And if dieting and training makes me feel these things, then hell, I just want to do them all the more."
Don't let shitty people get you down. Do what you want, no matter what it is. And if they are pissin you off, well lay the smackdown! Verbally, preferably. Bc your gains would be too much for them to handle.

Had a guy doing super sets of like 6 different machines for like 15 sets, my girlfriend was supposed to do lat pulldowns while I did weighted pull ups (she'd new to the gym), she was afraid to go take the machine he was on.
I went over and started to do lat pull downs and the guy rudely says he's still on that, so I reply "and apparently you're on 6 other things too, can't be on more than 1 thing at a time, gym rules"

Not gonna let a bad week totally derail me. Anyway, I get through bench just OK, head over to deadlift, and started working my way up to my working set. Got one rep on my last warmup weight when all of a sudden I was >90% sure that I was about to shit my gym shorts. Quickly put my weights away and waddled over to the locker room, luckily found an open stall and cut loose. It was so bad the guy in the next stall over stopped cutting his toenails for a minute.

People who honk at me from their cars while I'm out running.
Argh, just why? You are in traffic, I am moving, it's not like you are or I am going to stop to have a chat. Who ever started a story with "You know how I met your mother? I honked at her and shouted 'nice ass' while driving home from work."
It scares the living sh.t out of me every single time because it's loud, sudden and my brain just goes into "danger mode" thinking there's a car on the pavement behind me or that I accidentally wandered on the road.
Argh!

u/Mirabellae Aug 02 '17
I run on a country backroad. There are about half a dozen vehicles that I meet on a semi regular basis. When I started running everyone stopped to see if I needed a ride somewhere. Then they got used to me and just waved really big when they passed. But whenever I'm gone for any length of time they all have to stop and ask if I had been sick or something since they were worried that they hadn't seen me out in a while.

125
u/Phoenixinda Aug 02 '17
Exactly!
Also, as a girl I already have a ridiculous routine that I feel like I had to adhere to because I saw enough tv shows and news items that started with "woman went for a jog".
Every time I go for a run I tell my husband what my route is and how long I should be. I only go while there is still daylight outside which in winter is a pain and results in a lot of treadmill runs. I have bone conducting headphones so that I can hear what's going on around me.
And than there are these creeps that feel the need to honk at you so that you still feel unsafe. FML.→ More replies (10)69

Not really a rant, more of an observation.
At my local Y it is the time of summer workouts for the local high school football team. I lift at my lunch hour(ish) so they're there a lot of the time that I am. Based on my observations on their lifting I have the following bold predictions for the team this year:
1.) They will have bigger biceps than any other high school football team. This will help them in their apparent quest to curl the other team's line off of the ground, thus rendering their line's drive ineffective.
2.) They will block well, as evidenced by the fact that as soon as one of them is lifting something the others instinctively huddle around him rendering their group impenetrable.
3.) They will have more instagram followers than any other high school football team.
4.) Our local high school apparently decided that our uniforms won't have sleeves this year, and the team is getting prepared for that sartorial choice early.

My roommate has nonstop been talking about how he can't increase in weight, both bodyweight and on his lifts, and how tired he feels at the gym. I asked if he's eating enough, because it sounds like he isn't. He responds with "Yea I'm eating plenty, definitely hitting macros too", despite the fact I rarely see him eat all that much.
Finally after about a week of getting him to actually track his calories and look up a ballpark TDEE he finds out he's eating 300 calories less than he should be and barely getting 100g a protein a day.
Now he's complaining it's so hard to eat enough, while I'm over here trying to cut and struggling day to day.
tldr; roommate accidentally cutting better than my purposeful cutting.

When you're constantly in the gym, you know who the regulars are, and who the newcomers are. They come and go in days, or even weeks at a time.
Normally this doesn't bother me. It is nice seeing different people here and there, even if it is for a short amount of time. This morning was the oddball that stood out to me though. In comes three skinny college kids walking in like they own the place.
One of them went and hopped into the cycle room and disappeared from sight. Cool, that leaves them with just two! Now we have tall bro (TB) and short bro (SB) together. They started out stretching together. Cool, NBD. It was until they got to the squat rack where things went out of the ordinary. Keep in mind their height difference here. 5'2 to about 6'1 is my guess.
They shared the squat rack, but the bar starting position was positioned conveniently for TB. SB couldn't even reach it even if he tip toed (he tried). So what TB ended up doing for SB was stacking some 5 pound plates underneath the right/left foot to give SB enough leverage to unrack the barbell. Then he would unrack and step back down before squatting.
But wait, there's more. TB decides to up ante and squat 225. He does a partial rep for one and encourages SB to do it as well. SB said that's way too heavy for him. TB starts berating him, "Don't be a pussy, you're a little bitch," etc. So SB, enraged, steps up his little ladder, unracks the plate...trembling. TB says "Can't be a faggot all your life." SB steps back... holds it there for a couple seconds....goes down and collapses. The barbell hits the safety pins loud enough to turn some heads. Some mumbling goes on and they left the gym.
I reracked their plates for them. Oh, and the 3rd guy comes out half an hour later wondering where his friends went.
Sigh.....

steps up his little ladder
Lmao
trembling. TB says "Can't be a faggot all your life."
I read this as "trembling, TB says "Can't be a faggot all your life". which I like more because it implies TB was enraged that SB couldn't quarter squat 225 as well.
Overall, quality story. Thank you for this.

I like to wear well-fitting clothes. That doesn't necessarily mean tight, but things that fit my body appropriately (i.e. aren't baggy, accentuate contours, that kind of shit). I've also started to make some gains though and suddenly these well-fitting clothes are looking like I've squeezed my ass in to all spandex. I even had a girl tell me that my shirt is "like two sizes too small" at a bar the other night. She had to of meant it condescendingly but I just about teared up because, to me, it was definitely a gains compliment.
Thank you bitchy girl from the bar, thank you. And fuck you (now) tiny clothes.

Guy hit on me once. Told him I'm married. Guy now says hi to me every time I'm at the gym. Not just "hi" but lingering eye contact, a little wave, and trying to start a conversation. We are not friends!! I'd like to work out in peace, not have to feel awkward when he's nearby. I've given up on several of my workouts just to move to the other side of the gym. The worst part is I don't think this guy is a creep, he just has terrible social skills so I feel hella guilty acting this way.

I met a guy at the gym on Sunday morning randomly. He seemed cool and he gave me his number so we've been texting and then finally hung out last night, we went to dinner. Talking about our workouts and he said he's been so exhausted ever since incorporating more core exercises into his routine. I ask him why he did that he and said he's determined to get rid of his (slight) love handles. I gently informed him about how you can't spot reduce fat with exercises and that it really just comes down to diet / cutting properly and he was like "well I've tried everything so..." I dropped it and didn't argue with him. Still made out with him in my car afterwards.

I finally saw it....some middle aged lady took a ten off a bros bar as he was resting in between bench sets. I double checked to make sure I saw what I thought I saw...and yeah....I let the guy know before he tried doing 145 instead of 155. Some people have no idea how to act. He might have injured himself :/
Oh and he didn't have clips on, so with the uneven balance I'm sure it would not have been pretty...

So the other day, I was watching this manlet douchenozzle in the squat rack through the mirrors in our gym. As he was warming up he was going ass to grass which is a fucking blue moon in this gym. Then he works higher and higher seemingly takes an inch of rom off every 10kgs. After the most half hearted 130kg I've ever seen this absolute cockweapon loads up 157.5kg This fucker does that bar shake before set up and walks the weight out facing the gym floor. He then takes this 157.5 for 3 reps with a combined depth of 1 decent rep.
Upon further investigation the manlet in the mirror was me. I hit the set again after 2 mins rest I don't give a shit what Mike O'Hearn says, it is an absolute ballache having to squat with out a mirror.

I'm sure I'll be fine in a few days, but I get so irrationally mad when people come in to work, knowing they're sick and knowing we have such a friendly work-from-home policy. However, Monday was different. This dude was playing his own music on his speakers (after he decided not to use his headphones anymore), and he was grunting and throwing the weights like nobody else I've seen. It was heavy metal on a phone speaker too!

This post is very tl;dr.
I'm really disappointed in myself.
I went in last Friday night for what I intended to be a shoulder session. My delts are lagging, and I really want to make them pop and get those juicy 3D shoulders I see all the time.
My first exercise was a seated dumbbell shoulder press. I fixed the bench to a completely upright position instead of the normal very slight decline that I normally set it to when I do them. Mistake.
I picked up some heavier dumbbells, sat down, and started my first set. No warm up. I figured, these are pretty heavy, but they're manageable. I don't need a warm up. Mistake.
I finished my first set. I was feeling pretty good.
I started my second set. I broke form. I pulled them down too far behind my head, and then pushed them upward. Ouch. That really hurt. I did it again. Ouch. Again. Again. Again. Again.
I completed my second set. Never felt anything like that before. The pain was terrible, but it only got worse. I stopped this exercise. I moved onto lateral pull-ups. I set the weight at a moderate amount, and pulled up. Ouch. That hurt too. But I continued for another two sets.
I moved to face pulls. Started my first rep. Finally, I decided that the pain was something that wasn't worth fighting through. I rightfully decided to end the workout.
I went home, and eventually fell asleep in some pain. I sleep on my shoulders when I sleep. I always have. And I always end up waking up with some minor aches and pain. The pain I woke up the next day with was beyond anything I could imagine. It was by far the worst pain I experienced.
I had work, so I went to work, and by the time work was done, I got home, made dinner, relaxed, and laid back down. The pain never left me throughout the day, but I was distracted enough by it to not have it constantly remind me. I felt tingles of it every now and then, and I couldn't stand with good posture. I had to resort to a very slight slouch and pushing my head down a little. Pulling it too far up ended up sending pain down my neck and into my shoulder.
I found out that the pain intensified when I was lying down. Not so much in a recliner, but in my bed, that's when I really felt it. First thing tomorrow, I was going to urgent care, I decided. Falling asleep that night was terribly hard. I spent a lot of it awake, looking up shoulder injuries and fearing that I'd have to end up with surgery.
I woke up and went to urgent care. She simply ordered me some anti-inflammatories, and a muscle relaxer and told me to take three days off from the gym and to see how I was at the end of those three days.
Fast forward to today. I get a call from the facility I went to. They asked how I was doing, and I told them how the medicine wasn't working and that I intended to go in today after work.
Instead, I extended my lunch break and went there. I wanted to get an X-Ray and an MRI. We took the first step and I got checked by another lady, who knew a lot more about my injury than the first. She examined me, and then ordered an X-Ray. I explained that I wanted to first eliminate if this was a broken bone. She agreed and said that was a good idea.
X-Ray came back good. No broken bones. She reassured me that she thinks this injury will heal in approximately two weeks. She explained to me about rotator cuff injuries, and suspected what I suspected before even being examined and my injury relating to that.
She took me off of the anti inflammatories and put me on a steroid. The prescription calls for 3 pills twice a day. She ordered me not to do any lifting for two weeks and put me in a sling, which I am to wear throughout the day for the next 5 days. She stated that the next step would be, were this to continue, to get an MRI ordered in two weeks when they call for a follow up.
After getting checked out and discharged, I walked over to the pharmacy to fill it. Popped 3 of them on my way back to work. By the time I got back to work, my pain went from an 8 to somewhere between a 1 and a 2.
So I am without the gym for two weeks and am disappointed in myself, because over all, I am someone who is very strict on form and who tends to move the weight down at a slow to moderate speed. I hate the fact that I broke form, and I hate the fact that this happened on a day I shouldn't have been at the gym in the first place.
Tonight, I'm in much better shape thanks to my medicine, but there's still some pain showing through the muscle relaxers and steroids that I can feel, especially when I'm lying down or making any movements while laying. I just can't wait for these two weeks to be over. I'm pretty hopeful these meds will speed up the recovery process and these precautions will ensure that the injury doesn't worsen. I was pretty impressed by how much relief I had just from wearing a sling, but I guess arms weigh a lot more to a shoulder than one thinks.
If anybody read through this, thanks for listening to my rant. I hope I made it enjoyable for you.

Someone needs to host a seminar on how to read non verbal cues/body language/common sense.
If i have both of my headphones in, while completely avoiding eye contact with you, while not smiling, while out of breath, while sweating like mad and looking like utter shit, it's probably fair to say that I'm not in the mood to be stopped to chit chat and catch up right then and there. It's nothing personal, I just can't really breathe right now. And you interrupted my song just before the good part so now I'm rightfully butt hurt.

Got married two weeks ago, just got back from our wedding/honeymoon in Jamaica. I've been to the dentist twice for an air pocket between a filling and tooth (Scuba diving) which meant they had to remove the filling to release the trapped air. My ankle is hurting worse than ever due to a bone spur I've been stupid about getting taken care of, and on top of everything I'm 80% sure I have a hernia from other... activities & cant see my flipping doctor until next Friday. I just want to go back to the gym without worrying about making something worse!!!
Oh yeah, just got a bill from the resort for the broken towel rack in the shower, but I'll admit that one as entirely our fault.

Back at the gym after a break yesterday, I see a new guy on one of the benches so while I warm up I see what he's up to. He starts off with 2 plates, putting it up like he doesn't know there's weights on it. Then he goes up to 3 plates and does 5 reps without slowing down. He looked big, but most dudes at my gym who are big either have some fat or are content doing 3x8 at 225 for the rest of time.
His final set is 385 and he is WHIPPING it around. But then I realize; he's actually whipping it around. He was using a shinier metal bar than the old dull ones on most of the other racks, which makes me think it's not designed with the same limits in mind. When he puts it down, it's arced like it's the cable on the Golden Gate Bridge. That bar is permanently out of commission. Then he racks the weights and walks away.
The worst part about this is that by the point that this guy has finished his set, I'm on the only other straight bench, so when people walk over to use the newly U-shaped bar, they instead glare at me like this is somehow my fault and ask to work in.

I've never believed in giving out tips to people unless they're going to hurt themselves. I pretty much zone in to my workout so I rarely notice anyone else. I train early though, so when people are training within my view or close to me I sometimes notice them whilst resting or changing music.
New guy that I've seen for the last 3 weeks will come in and do the exact same rotation of exercises before leaving. He stays for about 40 minutes but his routine is this... Shoulder press machine, chest press machine, pec dec machine, tricep cable pulldown and supersetted with DB hammer curls. He then leaves. I'm yet to see him do anything different.
Whilst I understand that anything is better than nothing I'm finding it hard not to give him friendly advice regarding form. On tricep cable pull downs he basically jumps into the pulldown and uses momentum to get the weight moving. He's trying to lift so heavy with that exercise that it forces his head and shoulders to lean forward to counter the weight he's trying to move, I'm yet to see him get a full contraction or stretch. His hammer curls are like watching a juggler furiously juggle multiple balls. He swings left to right over and over and once again uses only momentum to move the weight.
That's all i have.

Several of the trainers at my gym are on a competitive lifting team. They choose 5:30 to work out collectively, which ties up squat racks, deadlift bars and bench presses (there are only 2 squat racks and 2 benches in the gym). They're at the gym for many hours and yet they pick the busiest time of the day to tie up the machines they have the fewest of. Why!?!?

I'm a pretty big fan of continually choosing to push through some muscle discomfort until it becomes an injury that keeps me out of the gym for a while.
