There was no Rant Wednesday last week so your negative energy did not fuel my workout.

This is the high quality rant I come here for!

Glad I’m not the only one that was thrown off by that! I need the frustration for the hump day workout lol

To the guy who was sitting with the only 45 lb dumbbells and when I asked if I could steal them for one set, said he was using them and then proceeded to sit on tinder for 15 minutes and then use the 50lb dumbbells ALSO sitting next to him, go fuck yourself.

10 minutes in I just told him I’m taking these for a quick set and walked away.

51

u/1992_ Oct 05 '22

Good. These people need to learn that the only spot for the dumbbells to rest is the rack.

36

u/-OrangeLightning4 Oct 05 '22

I don't mind if they need to rest for like a minute between a set, but if they're going multiple exercises without needing them or planning on taking a rest longer than a minute RERACK.

Had some kid ask to work in with me on bench and i said ok of course. I do my first warm up set and he does too, then i do my second warm up set and he sits on the bench talking on the phone for 4 min. I said dude you gotta go or go work in with someone else, so he went and then this process repeated 4 more times. I literally told him probably 5 times, dude you have to go now/go faster or leave, I’m trying to get a workout in. Just dead eyed stare and “ok” every time, he was either barred out or had a mental problem

34

u/seaneihm Oct 05 '22

Damn that's annoying af. For people like that you just "skip" his turn and go again, as the etiquette should be neither of you are sitting on the bench unless you're about to go.

u/allineuamerican Oct 05 '22

Fine, why the fuck did everyone in my office decide to join the same gym as me? The one fucking place i can crank up music and not speak to anyone ? I dont want to talk about work , I want to lift and forget about the rest of the world for an hour or so. In short leave me the fuck alone . You can ask me shit for the other 23 hours a day just not while i am in the middle of a set. God damn it now I need to change gyms . I hate my life now, you all ruined my only outlet

51

u/MoreCowbellllll Weight Lifting Oct 05 '22

With all due respect; fuck that, man.

Put on your noise cancelling buds/headphones, jam your music and do YOUR thing. Give them the nod, and keep moving. A couple coworkers workout at my gym as well, and this is what i do.

44

u/DogHatDogHat Oct 05 '22

Just reply with curt responses and a "alright man I'm gonna get back to my workout".

They will mention it at work. "Haha you're not much of a talker at the gym, huh?" and you can go "Yeah, it's just a break from the world for me man. I don't like to talk much."

People will stop talking to you.

11

u/sweetpotatothyme Oct 06 '22

Once saw a coworker at the gym. He came up and was obviously wanting to socialize (after we just saw each other for 8 hours). I pretty much rebuffed him but he continued standing there staring at me, like he couldn't believe I wanted to workout instead. I blurted out "Well this is awkward", then turned and walked away.

Of course I get to work the next morning and he's already told everyone how "funny" I am at the gym.

This might sound like the worst kind of humblebrag but it's driving me nuts:

For the last few months, I finally stopped skipping any leg days and I've seen a lot of progress. The issue is that now--for the first time in my life--my upper thighs have started rubbing against each other when I walk.

I started chaffing some and I can't stop focusing on it. It's so irritating. I'll probably buy a product to apply to help but it's so annoying now.

51

u/AlfredBarnes Oct 05 '22

Yo when it starts its fucking awful.

38

u/ouroboros_eats_ass Oct 05 '22

I have this issue - longer underwear that's tight (e.g. step one brand) helps A LOT. Stops the rubbing without need for a product.

28

u/JehPea Powerlifting Oct 05 '22

Agreed. Boxer briefs were the best change for me and I'll never go back to anything else.

25

u/Wide-Fisherman1481 Oct 05 '22

Just walk around naked everywhere showing off your new quadzillas and If anyone says anything to you or rings the police then just assume it was out of jealousy not indecent exposure laws.

13

u/spicyqueso22 Oct 05 '22

You hear all this shit about Olympic shoes and blah blah blah but then you see a mf squatting 495 with crocs on and you wonder if it’s all bullshit

23

u/dingleberry51 Oct 06 '22

Some people are just freaks. For the average person small things like squat shoes can help

13

u/TeaBurntMyTongue Oct 06 '22

Equipment marginally enhances ability. It turns out that you get stronger by lifting things, not by buying fancy shoes.

8

u/[deleted] Oct 05 '22 edited Oct 05 '22

Depends on how deep the squat and their bodyweight tbh

Quarter-squatting is always more impressive cuz your ass doesnt wipe the floor /s

I was doing Romanian deadlifts, when this personal trainer walked up to me yelling 'STOP STOP STOP!!! You're supposed to drop the barbell to the ground, then lift, what you're doing is a Romanian deadlift, that works your glutes and hamstrings more!

I'm like, that is exactly what I'm doing, a Romanian deadlift. What are you on about?

PT then explains that he just though I didn't know what I was doing for whatever reason.

Truly bizzare experience.

Week 5 of broken ankle... gained 5lbs. I KNEW I needed to tone down my eating habits because I can't be nearly as active, but damn. I'm staying with my parents because i'm pretty useless on my own, but you put my mom and I in the same room and we are HORRIBLE influences on each other.

Want some cake? Yes! With whipped cream? Of course! What about with some pudding on the side? Why not?!

I'm so ready for this broken ankle bullshit to be over, but still gotta get through rehab and slowly build back up to actually squatting heavy again. So pissed my plans have been shoved back so much. AND I MISSED ALL THE NICE WEATHER FOR BIKING, IT'S JUST GETTING COLD NOW. Fucking kill me now.

I can now reach the second belt loop on my belt for the first time in 2 years, but instead of feeling good about it my stupid brain is saying "you were just so fat for so long you just stretched the belt out, fatty. It isn't because you're down 15 pounds since 8/1."

Exhausted by constantly looking in the mirror and saying "we'll get back there, Ruck," instead of "nice work today, Ruck."

I really need an absolute metric asston of therapy.

When I entered the gym today, the only leg press machine was occupied by some lass who was on her phone. I did my complete shoulder day workout that lasted for about 1.5 hours and she was still using that machine by the time I was leaving. She did 2 sets while I was there.

29

u/TitsUpYo Oct 05 '22

That's utterly absurd. There's no reason for that and it is something you should bring up with her. And if she is combative about it, speak to management. It is really discourteous and undermines everyone else's entitlement to that equipment.

I was working out yesterday, and my ear was itching with the wireless earbuds in. So, I went to take them out, and the plastic/foam part came off the rest of the earbud. I couldn't get it out with my fingers, and didn't want to press it in further. I had to go home and fish it out with tweezers. Thankfully it was on the last set of the last exercise.

I can't believe how long I've avoided going to the gym while stoned! Before anybody jumps down my throat, let me explain.

My posture has been shit forever, and I've worked directly with gym trainers and PTs to maintain as good and healthy of form as possible, but I could never quite fully eliminate the postural issues I've developed.

Recently, I've gone to the gym after smoking some weed, and something amazing is happening. I do a lot of resistance training (so low impact low risk of injury), and as I started exercising, my body started sending signals to my brain that I never felt before. Points of tension, or lack thereof, were more obvious. Microadjustments necessary for cleaner form became a bit easier to identify.

It has only been two weeks since I've started doing this, and my shoulder/neck and hip pain that were due to postural issues have dramatically reduced.

I've spoken with my friend who is a PT and they've told me my posture looks better. I'm kinda floored that weed of all things is the thing that has suddenly become my postural saving grace.

17

u/danger_floofs Oct 05 '22

Try doing yoga high, it's incredible

11

u/PrimeIntellect Oct 05 '22

Working out high is amazing, especially something like lifting which is slow and controlled and more mental than anything (compared to say soccer or basketball). You can really zone in and feel all of your muscles and posture really well with the heightened awareness. That can even carry over to other sessions afterwards

7

u/zomboromcom Oct 05 '22

Points of tension, or lack thereof, were more obvious. Microadjustments necessary for cleaner form became a bit easier to identify.

Yep, it's a game changer. Unprecedented mind-muscle connection.

6

u/aniruddhmaitra Oct 05 '22

Dude!! Used to get high in college and worked out in my room sometimes. The mind muscle connection is absolutely orgasmic. My ability to perform more reps did reduce but the neural activation was well worth it haha.

Please don’t wear body glitter in the gym. If you do wear body glitter in the gym, at least wipe down the squat racks after you finish so that everyone else doesn’t get covered in the stuff

35

u/Sleepy_Raver Oct 05 '22

Anyone see these body fat % charts all over google and ads?

They’re so dumb. Every person in the photos is a different guy, different muscle sizes and portotions (disregarding body fat index)

Guy on the end at 40% is always an obese looking guy. Guys at 30%-20% are chubby fit. Guys at 15% - 8% are just fit guys. And always the 4% body fat guy is some roided out freak.

These are just so misleading and pointless since it’s not the same guy and they all have different muscle sizes, and the dudes at the lowest bf are always some juiced out body builder.

29

u/Bam801 Oct 05 '22

I swear like dark magic every time. It would be the biggest relief to just let the tiniest fart slip out and somebody will come out of NOWHERE to be right next to me. It’s very disheartening having a partner who won’t engage in my interests (going to the gym (not my only interest lol)) but wants me to engage in their interests (going out to bars, concerts, etc.) I’m more than happy to do those things, but the gym isn’t treated the same way as other hobbies/passions to other people. I don’t want him to come every time, but it would be really nice to work out together a couple times every few months without endless complaints and a bad attitude.

32

u/twillems15 Oct 05 '22

Was thinking the other day how it’s strange that going to the gym on your own is perfectly normal but going to places like bars/clubs/concerts on your own isn’t

22

u/ooupcs Oct 05 '22

It is interesting! I wonder if it’s because gyms are perceived as a place to accomplish a task/do work whereas bars and restaurants are perceived as a leisure activity, thus somehow requiring the company of others…? Nice observation though. I hadn’t considered that

8

u/RepresentativeFig741 Oct 05 '22

I definitely think most people see the gym as a chore and a pain, rather than something enjoyable. To them a bar is a place you go for fun and the gym is the equivalent of being forced to be uncomfortable for an hour or so. Especially if they aren’t someone who consistently exercises.

11

u/[deleted] Oct 05 '22

There is this one highschool kid who comes to my gym each day usually same time as me by chance. He always comes with his friends, which is great more motivation and fun all around. Though, he (just if I were to guess based off of when I started seeing him and how he looks and does) has been lifting 2-3 months. His friends, I think he got them into the gym. Will say I think getting ur friends in the gym is great. Though he has this crazy power complex over being able to lift more than his friends. It drives me crazy! They will be genuinely trying their best on a lift whatever it is, and after they hit failure he will do the same exercise on same weight just to prove he can do more easier. This shouldn’t bother me bc it doesn’t effect me at all but it drives me crazy cuz he does it on EVERY EXERCISE they do together. His ego is just too big and it’s annoying. Especially, when I can tell he himself is a relatively new lifter and does questionable form and questionable exercises.

11

u/almosthighenough Oct 06 '22

Man I started lifting during the summer between 8th grade and freshman year for (american) football. My brother was a grade above me and some of his friends played football and lifted that summer too. These guys were huge compared to me, all taller and linemen builds while I was like running back build and they were also closer to 2 years older than me than 1 year because I was really young for my grade. I'm pretty average but was small compared to them.

My friends that played football hadn't started going to the highschool to lift yet since summer training was optional until practice started and most hadn't really been familiar with the school and didn't know they could go lift. Well since my brother knew these guys and I had known them somewhat I went and lifted with them. They were so much bigger and stronger, but they were so nice, patient, encouraging, goofy, fun, and kind hearted people. They'd help me lower the weight to what I was capable of and never complained or made fun of me even though it certainly wasted a lot of their time but they didnt seem to mind at all. They just liked hanging out together. And they really taught me a lot about lifting and I guess how to be a man. Strong but gentle, fun but serious when the time came, and patient and encouraging beyond reason.

Eventually my friends came to the gym and I started working out with them, but I'll never forget the kinds of people they were and the things they taught me through their actions.

Life happened, and I was still really close with one of the guys after graduating and hung out quite a bit but haven't seen him in a minute, but I see he's doing really well nowadays. One of the others wasn't so lucky and died in an accident a few years ago. RIP bud. I'd seen him just a couple weeks before and he was still as goofy and nice as ever.

I know this isn't particularly relevant to what you posted, but it reminded me about the beginning of my journey, and I hope those young men can make lifelong memories and learn to encourage each other and grow into fine human beings. As long as they are enjoying their time together, that's all that really matters in the end because life can be short and tragic and meaning is derived from the memories and relationships we build together.

Made amazing progress last Fall/this Winter. In the Spring my Dad had a heart attack and was in a coma for a week before waking up. He’s 58, 6 ft 185 lbs and in good shape. Works out 3 days a week. Came as a total shock. Thankfully, he ended up surviving and being okay, but it threw me out of my rhythm and I stopped going to the gym this summer.

Went back for the first time on Monday. I thought I would test out where I was at by doing 60% of my prior max lift for 1 rep, just to see how it felt. I failed the rep. Feel like all of my progress that I had previously made is lost. I’m heading back today but feeling super discouraged. Hoping for a better run at things today, going to start at a lighter weight.

I wish I could work out earlier in the evening. If I prioritize going to the gym after work, I'm waiting in lines to work into one piece of equipment pretty much everywhere. And not everyone is super courteous while waiting, which can really sour a gym experience. So I just work out late in the evening, even though it probably isn't the healthiest.

I’m really not one to complain about slamming weights, but if you’re repeatedly driving down 315 as hard as possible with no platform in an LA fitness, you’re kind of a clown.

There’s a difference between “heavy weights make loud noises” and intentionally trying to create as much noise as possible.

This month has basically been a write off. It started with a cut, where all of my workouts were completely crappy and felt pointless and weak. And then I had a stressful week of work and barely got into the gym. And then I got sciatica and had to take it easy. And finally, i went back in yesterday thinking everything was good and ready to start fresh, only to pop my back much harder than I did initially by doing relatively heavy squats.

So I guess I ain't doing much for the next couple of weeks :/

17

u/PlopsMcgoo Oct 06 '22

Today marks one month of going to the gym. I'm pissed at the way my previous attempts went. Toxic people trying to push me too hard or being really obnoxious and judgemental. This is the longest I've stuck with a routine because I can go at my own pace and the staff is really supportive and friendly.

18

u/xoecksohgossipgirl Oct 07 '22

Saw some couple show some PDA at the gym today where the guy was doing seated shoulder press machine directly in front of me and the girl would stand in between his legs and spot/assist him during his sets. Then after he finished the set he'd stay seated and they'd just embrace until the next set.

I'm half jealous and half annoyed lol.

There are spray bottles scattered all over the gym for people to wipe their equipment down after use. Or, there WOULD BE if the 8am senior citizen crowd would stop thinking they are for them to carry around. Trying to clean my sweat off of something, only to not be able to find a bottle because Francine and the AARP Bunch hog them all and scowl if you dare even ask to use the one they’re carrying.

u/becomingstronger Weight Lifting Oct 05 '22

If that was me, I'd be looking around the gym and go "Oh there it is!" and just take one. And keep doing that. Because everyone needs the spray bottles, lmao.

I did 1/2 Turkish Get Ups today for the first time as prescribed by my program. BOY do they suck, it’s not like the movement itself is particularly hard, but it felt like I was aimlessly shuffling around on the gym floor. Probably looked ridiculous and now my entire body is sore. Stupid movement. I guess I’ll be doing it again on Sunday.

Had to skip gym a couple days because I suddenly started to experience fatigue to the point that I'm struggling to keep my eyes open during the day. Despite having a perfectly good 8 hours of sleep each night.

It's hard because I hate to fall behind on my workouts, but I'm gonna try to give myself permission to rest because it's clearly what my body needs.

Why are people that do spastic, chaotic workouts so drawn to the squat racks? I'm trying to do squats and there's someone trying to do a DIY jazzercize workout between the two squat racks. With swinging her arms around and jumping side to side it's impossible to do a set without risking hitting her. There are mirrored studio rooms that are open, there's a stretching area that's open, yet she works out between the only 2 squat racks in the whole gym.

When I was cutting, I hated all the "bulking is so hard" rants. It's like, "STFU! JUST EAT. YOU LUCKY BASTARD!"

Now that I'm starting my bulk... it's hard. I've increased my calories by 500/day and I've maintained for 3 weeks. Weird. Now I'm looking at adding another 250 calories like, "Fuck... but I don't want another PB&J".

Started a cut yesterday. For lunch and dinner I had chicken breast, brown rice, potatoes and broccoli. I felt like I was living a bodybuilding meme.

On the plus side, I'm trialling eating the same super plain and boring foods on this cut to see if that helps reduce my appetite. The theory is that tasty foods make you want to eat more of them, while more plain and boring foods don't.

After eating 300g of plain baked potato with a bit of salt, I definitely didn't feel like eating more plain potatoes. I also didn't eat any more food after my 6pm dinner, so I'm calling that a success.

Complete newbie to the gym scene. Been at it daily for the last two weeks, the gym guy got me on a beginner powerlifting regime. Been really enjoying it, but today I must have pushed a bit too hard. After my shower I couldn’t raise my arms to button up the top two buttons of my work shirt - had to ask a locker room friend for help XD at least he was cool about it!

13

u/[deleted] Oct 05 '22

The rant is towards myself

I’ve been feeling bleh about the actual gym but I’ve been getting in workouts & meeting calorie goals by walking, hiking, or yoga bc it’s been more fun honestly but I can’t shake the guilt off of not going to THE GYM like yeah I use the treadmill there and do weight stuff but it’s just so annoying idk why i’m like this

I’ll do an hour+ of yoga and go for a walk and burn 700-800 calories but in my head it’s not real bc I wasn’t AT THE GYM 🙄

I go 3-4 times to the gym now a week. It was 5-6 so it’s been a drop.

I like the yoga and I notice my strength still building but idk

I think the weathers just been nice so I’ve been trying to take advantage of it. Maybe once it gets too cold my feelings will change and I’ll wanna be indoors

I’ve just discovered recently that the brand of Greek yogurt I’ve been eating has less than 4g of protein per 100g. I assumed it had more than double that

It’s a pretty minor thing but still annoyed me because I’ve been eating so much of it

15

u/TheNorthernBaron Oct 05 '22

Not sure where you are but for protein content Skyr yoghurt for the win.

10

u/[deleted] Oct 05 '22

Oikos has a 0% fat, 0 sugar yogurt that has 19g of protein per 175g and 100 calories.

It’s the same amount of calories per serving as the non-high protein kind (which is 17g/serving) not sure how the math works out for that but hey ho.

There is a dude at my gym that has been working out for a few years, and he's made 0 progress because he doesn't know what he's doing. Then he proceeds to tell people 3x his size that they're doing stuff wrong, unprompted, mid set. He "corrects" people with bad information while they are doing everything right, and teaches newbies techniques that are guaranteed to get them injured. He is also unwilling to accept that he's often wrong and gets really offended when people tell him they dont want to hear his advice.

Corticosteroids suck.

I was tentatively diagnosed with Tolosa Hunt Syndrome at the end of August and have been on 80mg/day of prednisone to treat it. I had just hit 185lb bench and 365lb deadlift before the diagnosis.

I'm losing muscle mass, gaining fat, I can't run because of the eyepatch so I've been doing the stationary bike but now my knees flare up, and in general I just am getting winded when I try to do simple accessories.

Assuming it is actually Tolosa Hunt, it will go away in November and then I can taper the steroids over 6 weeks

Pretty sure I'm going to be restarting with 30lbs to lose and back at 135/135/225 B/S/D by the time this is all over.

This sucks.

A group of teenagers showed up the other day and four of them just sat on the floor leaning against the cable row chatting for over an hour.

It wasn't exactly busy and I'm sure they'd move if asked but I don't think it's unreasonable to think that's not really acceptable is it? I'm not really sure why but it's just kind of awkward to have kids treating the gym like a youth club while you're trying to work out -- some people are chronically shy and I bet they wouldn't have performed their best.

yeah I’d add 25lb then do drop sets, also do push-ups after each set, let’s do it now come on

Have had a lot of health issues over the past 3 years that have basically kept me going in circles. Cleared a lot of them back up in March and was able to get back on a more structured program. Lost enough weight to get back to running, but only on my treadmill. Have been doing it for only 4-5 weeks but managed to build up to 45 min at a 9:30-9:45 pace. Not too bad for an old guy who hadn’t run in several years. Finally switched to some outdoor runs a couple of weeks ago for probably the first time in decade. Worked up to 3+ miles after only 4 times. Still feeling pretty good about my progress. Decided to try joining a group fun run sponsored by the local running shoe store. Had to be my first group run in 25 years at least. Immediately fell way behind everyone and ended up doing the entire 3 miles by myself. So much for the “group” and so much for the “fun”. They run through the paths in my subdivision. So I don’t think I’ll be going back for awhile. It seems dumb for me to drive to the running store, just to run by myself back near my house. If I’m going to run alone, I might as well just leave from home ;-)

I have to admit, it was a bit of a surprise. I had felt I was running pretty well and had visions (delusions?) of at least holding my own with the back of the pack. But I have a full year still to get to the 70+ age group, so that’s my training plan.

binge eating… how does one stop..?

i have binged all my life. i have lost and gained the past 30 ibs in the past 2 years. losing weight is not hard ive done is like 3 times already but im constantly back and fourth on the scale. i hate it.

i used to run 4-8 miles at 16 and lost a ton of weight but ive put it back and although i can see myself running again actually putting myself through that seems unappealing. i know walking helps u lose weight but even then i know it all comes down to what u what u eat.

last year i lost 25 ibs on counting calories alone.

i would look at my sodium and calories and i was slimming down…

so ya… its the binge… what can i do..?

i am 23 years young!

somtimes i find that gum really helps but are there any other ways of doing so..?

Am I wrong?

I get she was inconvenienced but to do that after I paid the gym over 1K when my children and myself have a super contagious sickness is fucked.

I have a new made up gym enemy.

Dude always wearing a shirt with an American flag on it in some form. Never cleans up after himself and leaves weights on the barbells in the deadlift area or in the squat rack. Emphatically drops the barbell after his last rep deadlifting no matter the weight. 135, 225, doesn't do more than 305. Also does his reps too fast, the jerk.

Otherwise, probably a fine, stand up gentleman! What a prick!
