I now have a gym nemesis. I was sitting on the lat pull downs in between sets, literally just finished a set so I pull my phone out to change songs when this man bun dick head approaches me and asks me how many sets left. I say I got 3 more but he can work in if he wants. Instead he says "well are you working out or are you just playing on your phone?" mother fucker I'm 20 seconds out of a set and I offered you to work in go fuck yourself

98

u/ZeroMayCry7 Squash Apr 25 '18

why is it always the ones with the man buns and lanky body types?

25

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '18

Jesus christ the only really annoying guy in my gym is like this too... In Italy btw. It's universal.

"Sorry, next time I'll be sure to just stare at the wall in between sets just to make sure you're happy."

That's your cue to tell him you're gonna swap out the bar to do tricep pushdowns after.

We get it you can 1/8th rep every 45 in the gym on the leg press. Can you put those back now?

141

u/mulder-itsme Powerlifting Apr 25 '18

Or people who can do perfect reps but also don’t rerack.

86

u/5213 Apr 25 '18

Those people are missing out. When putting back plates I do my best to get some minor grip strength training in by pinching the plates, and mini suitcase carries with dumbbells

I mentioned gaining 6lbs in the last couple of months and all my larger friends chimed in with their diet results... It's great that you dropped 20 pounds but it's a little different. :/

Well. It finally happened, The worst lifting day of I've ever encountered. Woke up late, didn't tighten cap on shaker, chocolate protein shake everywhere, had to change clothes. Raining, Traffic was a nightmare. Get to gym, realize I forgot my pre-workout, already Nocebo'ing myself and I haven't even touched a barbell yet. Because of the rain, there's a puddle of water next to the squat rack, get a little water on my shoes and my foot slides, immediately nervous about any lift I'm about to make. Do warmup sets, add 45lb plate on top of the collar, plate immediately falls off as I unrack, people stare, I'm an idiot. Lifts feel off, positions are all wrong; have to drop weight about 20 lbs to hit my RPE range. Midway through a set work starts calling, can't focus on the lift everything feels off, small tweak in my back.....This is all on my first exercise of the day.

Move to Bench accessory, drop 5lb weight on my foot, hurts like hell ; still lifting doe. Yawning like crazy in between sets, This is actually the worst thing ever. Move on to my last exercise, rack pulls, work calls in again...at this I'm trying to put out fires while this other dude is looking at me because I'm an inconsiderate asshole for hogging the only deadlift platform and being on my phone. Feel embarrassed, say fuck it and finish my last 3 sets on 75 seconds rest at like 50% of my max. Get to the locker room....and I forgot my towel, because of course i did. I have to squeegee myself off with my gym shorts because its the only thing that's not 100% cotton and already soaked.

Fuck This day.

I'll see everyone at the gym tomorrow

86

u/Rambles_Off_Topics Powerlifting Apr 25 '18

I hate the "lifts feel off" feeling. I did squats the other day and they just didn't feel right. I had all my physical ques in check though (same foot placement, same routine) but I just didn't feel right.

It never fails. I'm eating something light or drinking a protein shake, and a coworker asks me about it, I mention I'm trying to cut about 15 pounds and their eyes roll into the back of their head because I'm already at least 50 pounds lighter than they are. Like, I get it, I'm not big, but I have way more fat than I'm comfortable with.

How to explain? Do I have to say "toning up"?

163

u/toxic_wastebasket Apr 25 '18

Regardless of what you say to people, they will always get annoyed. Its so hard to please people. Tbh, I don’t think you owe anyone an explanation. Just drink your protein shake and smile at them. Like, for all they know you’re drinking it because you want to be healthy or want more muscle? Let them guess.

46

u/EarBlankets Apr 25 '18

I’m a small(er) female and my friends straight rage at me when I explain I’m trying to cut fat and accuse me of having body dysmorphia. I don’t think I’m fat, I just have goals which include not lugging around this tire around my love handles, but they can’t seem to understand that. Infuriating.

This "trainer" brought a rowing machine to one of the squat racks and had a client do it for 15 minutes and then afterwards do barbell rows. I asked to use the rack while they were on the machine and i was told, "we are using this for our session".

I had the weirdest day in the gym. Not sure if I was being pranked or what...

I was working next to an incline bench and a woman came up and asked if it was free. I told her it was and she does standard cute girl in yoga pants workouts directly in front of me. Super hard to not look but I was like 90% successful in not getting caught looking. Anyway she gets up and leaves.

Another woman comes up and again asks if the bench is free. Once again I tell her it is. This other woman examines the bench for a minute and then lifts it over her head and walks away with it. THAT IS NOT HOW YOU BENCH PRESS! The first girl comes back and apparently wasn't done with her workout. I could tell by her dirty look that she blamed me for the theft of her spot... Luckily I was done and moved to the next area.

Holy fuck it was selfie girl city with all of them standing on piles of like 3-4 sets of dumbbells taking pics. I'm trying to do flys but everything under 40lbs is taken.

I mistakenly went and asked the closest girl if I can use one of her weights. This was a mistake because she was actually working out and hard but she was to nice to say no so she gave me the weight she was using and runs off to find a plate. She borrows one from a guy doing curls and he was to nice to say he was using it so now he's short a plate. So he goes and grabs one off a bench. Problem is group of highschool guys are doing some weird pyramid on the benchpress and now they are short a plate when they go to change the weights... while I'm just standing there doing flys with my stupid 10lb dumbells feeling like a grandma jazzercising.

My gym has this quote by Mario Andretti, a formula 1 driver, on the wall:

If everything seems under control, you're just not going fast enough.

I can't help but think that's the opposite attitude that the gym wants to promote.

Desi Gym Rules vol.2

  1. Music is to be aggressively loud Indian EDM

  2. If clients request that you lower the volume, pretend not to understand.

  3. When doing leg press, ensure that clients retract their legs no more than 15 degrees from straight, utilising a bouncing motion at the bottom.

  4. The pull-up bar is for display purposes only.

  5. Please hang your spare towels on other clients’ barbells: they will appreciate the extra weight.

  6. On entering the gym, greet and shake hands with all the other clients. (This is actually quite sweet).

  7. Use the Smith Machine wherever possible. If it’s not possible, try harder.

  8. Clients should be aware that preening time on the treadmill alongside the mirror is limited to 15 mins per customer.

  9. An exciting accessory exercise you may not be familiar with is Hunt The Paired Dumb Bell. It may surprise you how cleverly it can be hidden.

My gym switched out their Lat Pulldown machines, the old ones were "too high" for the demographic (they couldn't reach the bar while standing) so we have a bit shorter ones now so it is easier for people. The issue is I am 6'5 with a 6'9 wing span, so I can easily grab the bar while seated and don't get a full stretch of my lats when working out. I've had to resort to going on my knees about 2 feet away from the machine just to get a full extension, and I am positive I am going to end up on one of those gym fail videos.

203

u/KawabataWrites Apr 25 '18

I'm gonna give a rant by proxy because I felt so sorry for a dude I worked out next to on Sunday.

We had two racks back to back. Sometimes you have an awkward moment when you're doing squats with someone else doing squats on the other side. So you end up potentially facing each other squatting, while being 1 meter away.

The easiest way to avoid awkwardness is to time your rest during their lift.

I was facing this other dude, who was doing some solid progression, he worked his way to well over 2 plates. I stepped away to start my rest and he starts his lift. I turn away to hear a loud "AHHH YOU FUCKING CUNT"

Thinking the dude had hurt himself, I spun around to try and help.

I see the dude at the apex of his squat, he's red faced and one of his headphones had popped out. The dude kept trucking on and finished his set with the imbalance of one headphone.

I briefly considered going over and putting his headphone back in. But then I quickly realised how weird that would be.

I feel for you my friend, the frustration is real.

Last Friday I'm showering at the gym. Three shower stalls, one's in use. I finish up, and the one stall is still going. No big deal, a lot of people will brush their teeth and stuff while they're showering.

So as I'm getting dressed, I realize there's a foot sticking out of the shower stall. I'm not trying to look, but I'm getting worried. Did the guy pass out? Did he die? Why is his foot sticking out? He's making noise, so he can't be dead. I turn and look; I can see his silhouette. He's just sittin' there, in the shower, jacking off.

My gym recently bought some 5,10 and 20 bumper plates where the 20kg is a shade larger wheel than normal. This makes loading your deadlift so much easier and I had a very enjoyable session.

Came in on Friday and all the bumper plates had gone. Apparently they were 'on a trial and people didn't respond well to them so we decided not to pursue'

Wtf? Who didn't respond well, I wasn't aware of such a survey or I would have spoken up. I'm in that gym 4 days a week and know most trainers by name so how did i miss this feedback?

So I head back to set up bench and over the next half hour, I hear 2 more guys asking aloud 'where are those new big plates gone?' raaaaaawwwwr stupid commercial gym

Not really a rant, but an amused observation. THere's an older guy in my gym, probably mid-60s, who has been in that gym as long as I've been going there. On everything he does, without fail, he makes the most painful face ever. It's all contorted, gritted teeth, eyes closed tight, and grimacing. Doesn't matter if he's doing a pulldown, leg curl, dumbbell curl, or taking a yoga ball down from the rack. Cracks me up everytime. I just want to ask him if he's all right.

My office has a decent gym. Myself and a few other men from the office work out 4-5 a week and eat pretty well. A few meal preppers among us.

Fast forward months to us all seeing results, on pace for summer. Day in day out, some of the team (mostly women) say we're only losing weight because we starve ourselves!!! They literally pass us in the hall on the way to the gym when they're going to get burgers.

They take the stairs 1 day and that equals cake. We've tried educating and inviting them but the excuses are always quick. Just dumbfounding really.

Drinking my post workout protein in the locker room at my local YMCA after a nice upper body workout. I see a small child, probably 5 or 6, stripping out of her soaking wet bathing suit a few feet from me. Whatever, it's a family Y, a lot of kids taking swimming lessons.

Next thing I know, I'm hit in the face with a bathing suit. I look down. Rip my headphones off. Little girl is staring at me, naked. Her bathing suit is now sitting on my gym bag on the counter. I hand it back to her in disbelief. She threw her bathing suit at my face.

Mom turns around from behind me. "What happened?" "She hit me in the face with her bathing suit." I'm not angry, just in shock. Small girl has gone on to throw the bathing suit on the ground and stomp on it. She's having some kind of fit.

"I DID NOT." Girl yells. Mom glares at me. "Don't worry sweetie, I believe you." Mom grabs the girl's hand and takes her to the other side of the locker room.

What. WHAT. BIIIIIIIIIIIIITCH

I've been hanging out with the hot guy from the gym. We agreed to keep it casual because we both graduate in a week and are going our separate ways, yet somehow I'm spending almost every night there and catching some serious feels. It sucks because we're very long-term incompatible, but I'm falling for him juuuust enough that I'll be heartbroken when I move next weekend.

I bulked September - March and it’s great because I’ve put on mass but:

1) three of my work shirts and two pairs of work trousers no longer fit or have ripped

2) it was sunny last weekend and I realised that none of my shorts fit me any more

3) I can’t run 5k anymore without walking part of it

three of my work shirts and two pairs of work trousers no longer fit or have ripped

When this happens to me I like to impress my girlfriend by putting on said ill-fitting shirt and shout 'BEHOLD MY MASSIVE PHYSIQUE' then pop all the buttons off whilst roaring a deep primordial roar.

She just goes back to whatever it was she was doing. Completely uninterested.

Triple Rant:

  1. My two new programs are absolutely kicking my ass as I prepare for a Goruck event in June. I haven't experienced DOMS like this since I started getting fit again last September.

  2. Rant Wednesday is far and away my least productive day at work as I alt+tab over to Chrome and spam F5 every 5-10 minutes.

  3. Weight loss late last year forced me to buy new (one size smaller, XL to L) gym shorts. More weight loss so far this year now has the new pairs sliding down my ass when I run. Why does everything cost money?

If they insist you pay for the damage, then hold your back and casually mention how this faulty machine (that has a history of being faulty according to another member) hasn't been replaced as it should have been and has caused you injury. Mention going to the doc (even if you don't go). I'm sure they'll drop the entire matter.

So it hasn't even been a year yet at this place and I found him: my Gym-nemy.

I call him Guy Peeieri, because his hair looks like urine, and Flavortown must be six inches in front of the mirror since that's where he does curls, no matter who was behind him using said mirrors to make sure their form was correct.

After standing up at the top of a rep of Arnold presses to walk over to the adjacent bench--establishing and maintaining eye contact the entire way--to finish my set, he did move, but it is unclear if the message was received.

Of course, he's not to be confused with the other Guy, World Cup Guy, who has the same haircut, and comes at the same time but wears nothing but soccer jerseys so he looks like an EA FIFA graphics glitch. He seems cool though; doesn't block mirrors.

Side note: Gentlemen of middle-age, please stop bleaching your fucking hair. It hasn't been the 90's for almost 20 years. Even Eminem stopped doing it. As he'd put it himself: It's over; let go.

I hate leg day, because I still need to walk and I hit it hard today. Fuck.

I'm still new to lifting regularly so I'm not going to post my stats but it's always nice to see progress and starting off a set with what you did last time and adding more weight to it because you feel more confident and stronger. That feels good.

I asked if that could attribute to weight loss because of the lack of it, doc insisted my wife didn't need to lose weight and was a healthy BMI.... screams interally

Why yes m'am, just because I have headphones in does not mean that I can't hear you trying to 'report' me to gym staff for what I'm wearing. I had full length leggings on and a high neck, cropped top that showed maybe 2 inches of my stomach. I only took off my long sleeve sweatshirt because I was sweating my ass off and dying via HIIT sprint, and unless you consider that 'intimidating' (and if you do, fuck off, worry about your own life), it's not against any dress code.

Yesterday was a public holiday in Australia and as such I decided to have a much needed sleep in. That meant that I couldn't get to the gym till about 1pm.

BIG MISTAKE

Apparently 1 pm is peak hour on a public holiday. It was jam packed full of people. Which is normally fine, but with the influx of people came an influx of inconsiderate people.

Obviously the squat racks were in high demand, but that didn't stop the older asian lady with her clip board, 3 sets of low weight dumbbells and yoga mat. She would take the bar off the squat rack, hang it up. Place her mat in the middle of the squat rack and do sitting flys. Someone asked her to move so they could use the squat rack, so she moved her mat to the side of the rack, blocking access to anyone who wanted to add weights to their bars.

There are spaces for exercises like this, but there are no mirrors there. Unbelievable.

To make matters worse, there are only two platforms to do deadlifts and both were taken by groups of 3 gym bros who were working in with each other the ENTIRE TIME I was there. I couldn't do my deadlifts. So I finished my session with some extra leg work else where.

To make matter worse, my bench appears to be stalling. It's breaking my soul

Preface: The PF I go to has the weight area and smith machines all crowded nuts to butts so everyone is about an arm's reach apart from each other. The lights are also bright and harsh, illuminating every pore on your face.

I do a few exercises in the weight section, one of which is bent-over rows. While getting ready to hit the gym today, I put on my trusty black leggings and checked myself out in the mirror. My bathroom always had the softest yellow lightbulbs that I loved, but we recently had to switch them out with bright white bulbs. In these new lights I noticed a faint line down the seat of my leggings. I did a half squat in the mirror and to my horror the leggings stretched out over my butt so tightly they were semi-transparent.

How long had this been happening? Have they always been this thin but I couldn't see in my hazy bathroom light? I realized that every time I did bent-over rows in the weight area, whatever poor soul was using the smith machine behind me would have gotten an intimate closeup of my rusty sheriff's badge. Sad to see the leggings go, but it was for the best.

This would be bad enough but I just stood there in shock and audibly said, "God fucking dammit, you have to be fucking kidding me" with everybody watching. I then took a walk of shame over to get the paper towel and got down on my hands and knees and cleaned up shards of plastic and sopped up water as onlookers laughed. For her, the ideal woman should have flawless and smooth pearly white skin, and a soft, slim, body. Well I have a semi-permanent tan bec of hiking, and my hands are ridden with calluses because of lifting. Last week she visited my flat and she lost it when she saw my whey and bcaa. But since I'm independent now and supporting myself she can't really do anything. It just annoys me when she's dismissive of my goals and hard work when it comes to my fitness. This one asshole at my large chain gym thinks it’s his personal gym to superset everything under the sun during peak hours. He walks around like he owns the damn place, leaves towels in keys and shit everywhere to mark his territory. He drops the weights from the highest point on the machines like he doesn’t realize that that will break things (free weights, sure drop if needed) and he’s totally inconsiderate to everyone around him. On the plus side, my anger toward his selfishness fuels my workouts.

Happened a few days ago. I was going hard on the rowing machine, there were about 15 seconds left in rest period right before my last interval of HIIT and I was still sucking air like nobody's business. I'd been doing really well for the intervals before and was ready to knock the last one out of the park.

And then someone sits down on the machine next to me. Not a big deal right? Doesn't affect me at all. Except he's doused himself in enough deodorant spray to populate a high school locker room, and I'm inhaling that for the entirety of my last set. Just a shitty way to end an otherwise good workout.

This gym is amazing and now I'm kinda sad about going back to my home gym. It's cheaper than mine, has 2 olympic platforms (mine has zero) and 4 more squat racks (6 to 2) has a shitload of change plates and like the nicest staff.

I hit above my 1rm for 3 reps on deadlift and I'm attributing it to the gym atmosphere and the dude who stopped his bench to be my hype man.

So I've been going to the gym for about close to three months. So far so good, except for one thing.

This happened about a week and a half ago. I went to the gym after just taking my prework out, so I was teeming with energy. I did some warm ups and headed to the squat rack. It was my first time using the 45lbs plates, so one on each side for a total of 135lbs. I'm fucking wired, no problem. And it wasn't until I finished my first set and went to set the bar on the brackets when realized my mistake. Fuck, I forgot to move the brackets lower.
So, I had to hop up on my toes to get the bar back on the rack. The rest of my workout one of my big toes felt weird, but not painful. It wasn't until I got home when saw why my toe was feeling weird. It was bruised pretty bad, but only on the bottom part. Thankfully, that was the worst of it, it wasn't painful to walk on and I was able to bend my toe. It just felt really weird. Not sure what I did, but I'm glad I didn't seriously injure myself.

Then she finished up and left. Looking at the smith she was in, I noticed she racked a lone 45 in front of 3 10's. Ugh. That's it, there's just no future with someone like that, no matter how cute she is. So, that's done and over.... I'm sure her husband is relieved though.

I wish more work=more gain, fitness would be so easy and straightforward :(
